Quality wines (Bubbles!) at an exceptional price point. Visiting Roederer is a must if you have never been and you are a bubble fanatic! If it is definitely a trek if you are expecting to visit while in Sonoma County/Napa County, as it is a few hours drive from both located in the Anderson Valley AVA. Once you arrive, you may not be blown away from the aesthetics of the facility, but it has been around for quite some time. Do not let that get you down though as the grounds bring out some amazing views of the valley as it is perched atop a hill. As for the staff, I found them very kind and proud of the products they were pouring. A few of them were very knowledgeable, which was great as I do not know too much about the bubble production lifecycle. As for the tasting, walk ins accepted and a sub $20 dollar tasting fee makes it very attracable to the budget friend wine taster. Keep in mind also this is not what I call a 3 or 4 and done tasting, they let you walk through their entire fleet with generous pours, so be prepared. As for the wine, I loved them all, but if I had to really pick out a few winners, I'd say the Brut MV and Rose Brut were the winners for me. $30 dollars later, I was out the door with a tasty treat for a later time as well (Rose Brut)! I came with friends in the past and enjoyed flights. In June, we were able to do different flights. This time, I wanted to do a more reserve flight but was notified that the entire table must do the same flight because "it gets too confusing". Unsure if that is for the tasters or for the staff. I work in wine sales and hospitality and recognize folks can run their business how they see fit. Just saying, if executed right, this shouldn't be a big deal and would have netted them potentially more in tastings and even sales. The food add-ons are nice and varied. I have had the smoked salmon twice and it's very good. It's also a bit odd to be presented with a placemat with glass positions for five wines and to be poured one at a time. Sometimes it's fun to compare and contrast. However, not being a fan of polishing a ton of glassware, I get it. Most other sparkling houses do it that way though. It seems some Covid protocols are still in place which can make certain aspects of their hospitality a bit awkward. To me, Roederer makes the best bubbles of the few options in Mendo, so for me, the experience could use some thought. Just my $.02. read more

We had a wonderful sparkling tasting and learned a lot about the process at the same time. I'd love to come back when COVID is over and do a tour. It was especially interesting to taste the difference in the Magnum vs the regular-size bottle, I liked the Magnum better but I don't think I could open it myself! This is a place where you simply must take a tour! Especially if you love sparkling wine, you will learn so much about the science and the art of winemaking at Roederer, and enjoy great wines in the process. The location is unforgettable and the sparkling wines are superb. The outdoor patio is picnic perfect as well. Indulge yourself with a bottle of L'Ermitage for your wine cellar and ask to try the Brut Rosé as well! I recommend signing up for an 11am tour, which lasts around 90 minutes. It allows you to see the inner workings of the sparkling wine process, which is more involved than still wines, and at Roederer, they use ultra high tech machines to assist the winemaker and his team in creating 100,000 cases annually, 75% of which is sold nationally as Brut estate (around $25), but if you visit here you can purchase smaller lots of wines that tend to sell out quickly. Bring a picnic lunch for after the tour, as the patio here overlooks the vineyards and has great valley views (if it's not foggy). The weather on our late September visit was in the mid-80s and the skies were cloudless blue. It was calm, relaxing, and rejuvenating at the same time. Especially if you've been sampling lots of local Pinot Noir or been wine tasting in areas known for big, barrel-aged reds, the light but rich sparkling wines served here make great palate refreshers and adds something festive to your visit that can't otherwise be matched. read more

There's not much to complain about when you're sipping bubbles with your friends, surrounded by vineyards on a clear sunny day. Roederer got the job done, with a tasting flight of bubbles for just $6 in their classy hillside tasting room. I was impressed by the fancy bottles they were letting us taste: magnums of their grand cru, vintages you can't find at Safeway, stuff like that. You can get some good bottle deals here, so if you're a bubble lover you should consider stocking up. The prices and selection are quite special. Both the gentlemen working in the tasting room were professional, but not very warm. They must be sick of city slickers coming in just to get buzzed off their bubbles. Besides tasting, you can order wines by the glass and enjoy their outdoor patio overlooking the valley, too! Hence, the ability to get a little saucy. But hey, we're on vacation! Roederer specializes in "French-style" sparkling wines and had an extensive tasting list for $6. I was a bit surprised since I thought Mendocino might offer free tastings like Sonoma. As we were just starting our day, we were told we could sample a few gratis if we'd like (yes, we like!). They also offer a unique selection of lemongrass and lavender sodas for designated drivers. We were given a bottle as my gf loves lavender and it was subtle and refreshing. (score!) Overall, great winery, great laidback service, and great views! We have been stopping in to Roederer winery since 2015. We usually try to go there before or after I teach my summer class in Mendocino. We stopped by yesterday to enjoy a bottle of champagne and the hostess in the entrance was very short and very demeaning to us. I am not sure if she was judging us by our dress because we were in T shirts and shorts but she created a feeling that we were not welcome! She informed us that we would have to go outside and if we were not tasting we could not be seated in the nice tables on the back deck area , but had to sit in the tables along the parking area? We made it clear that because there was only one table with two people seated we wanted to sit outside on the deck area. The vibe of our experience was unpleasant! I don't understand why it has become so snooty but I can say that the experience has changed our feelings about the winery! We will probably never go back and we won't be buying their champagne in the future! So sad that the first question we were asked was "do you have a reservation?" It was 12:30 pm on a Tuesday! We are saddened that we used to look forward to stopping by and we always looked forward to our visit! The way we were treated was unacceptable and we didn't appreciate it! read more

Shuyla provided a wonderfully informative and intimate tour of the facility for our group of four people. It is adviseable to write ahead of time and arrange for a tour as that will get you inside the workings of the cellars. We bought L'Ermitage Brut, the L'Ermitage magnum, an Brut MV and a Pinot Noir. We drank an Extra Dry out on the patio where we were supplied glasses and crackers. It was a 70 degree day 2 April, 2011 and the view of the grapes and the valley was just that much better while sipping Champagne. These are the people who make Cristal in France. For someone (me) who drinks Dom Perignon and Le Grand Dame for champagne, this is a great value for the taste and quality. I think I can switch and not lose much, but be able to afford 2X drinking. This is a must stop in the valley. Ignore the reviews who must think Cook's and Cold Duck are the zenith of bubbly. I don't know where some of these people went who wrote reviews, but they must have drank too much to know where they were or what they were doing. There was no charge for tasting. If you don't have a taste for champagne, try the L'Ermitage and experience the good stuff. 3/2014 update - there is a tasting fee, now and Shuyla has gone off to raise a family. The staff is still very good and the bubbly is better than ever. Do yourself a favor and buy the magnum of L'Ermitage. Wow is the only way to describe this product. read more

On the weekend afternoon that we arrived at this pretty estate up on a slight hill, there was an inviting long table of free food. The spread was nice, and it was always refilled for guests, for it was May, the Pinot Noir weekend & Open House tastings for Anderson Valley! The tasting that we had was also free, which was nice. In total there were about 4-5 different kinds tried. But we are not big fans of the French, dry style of bubblies. We tried a whole range of them, and the trying was not easy, as our pourer was on the verge of distracted/disinterested/rude. The most minimal of eye contact. I know it's a respected label out there. But even the highest end one lacked, for us, a great flavor that we could part with some money for a bottle. There is a nice large table outside, but the sitting outside in general is not plentiful. A bench here and there. The building is actually pretty large. My group and I had a great tasting here. The man pouring our wines was super knowledgeable and gave us so much history on Champagne, France. He also talked a lot about the history of the winery and all the awards they have won in competitions. We felt he was very into Roederer. The property is so beautiful with great views below. Beautiful grounds and beautiful champagne (yes, I and everyone else can still call it that even though it is not from the region). $6 tasting for the area is expensive, but it is well worth the experience. Stopped on a Friday on our way to the coast. The sparking wines were pretty good. We also had salmon app that was very good. We purchased one bottle of reserve for $35.00. When we got our bill, it was $105.00! There was a $20 tasting fee per person ($40 for two). Nowhere was that posted nor mentioned before we started. I paid it but voiced my discontent. Gorgeous grounds and tasting room - more than any other winery, I feel like I could come in here in dirty jeans and muddy hiking boots or a tiara with a long black velvet dress and still feel comfortable and be confident that the staff would still treat me like a princess either way. The staff are always friendly and no matter how many people show up (seems to come in waves sometimes) - they keep communicating and are clear and professional. We have had the good fortune to have made several trips to the northern CA coast in the last 25 years and stoping for a tasting at Roederer is always on our list of must do's. Each experience has been wonderful; the grounds are lovely, the staff are knowledgeable and very welcoming, and of course the wine is delicious! During this year's visit Mimi was our hostess and she was absolutely delightful. Her effervescent personality was contagious which made our visit even more enjoyable. She made sure each member of our group of 5 had no unmet needs, even going out of her way to get us some snacks. She was knowledgeable about the wine and history of the winery. Our experience this time, because of Mimi, was so great that we decided to come back to do a tour with her while we are here. Anderson Valley usually has more intimate, smaller tasting rooms, but the one at Roederer Estate was very expansive, and had a large variety of interesting antique-y furniture. It was almost too stuffy and a tad ostentatious; kind of like if your grampa was a world-renowned explorer and you were sitting in his formal dining room twiddling your thumbs amongst his worldly souvenirs. We visited the day after Labor Day, so there were no crowds. Perhaps that's why the person in the tasting room was so disinterested about her job; we got a few half-hearted smiles thrown our way, and she was by no means unpleasant, but I'd never seen anybody less excited about pouring wine. She answered our questions, but didn't really volunteer information or make recommendations, which kind of dampened our excitement and made me feel whatevers about the estate anyway. While the sparkling wine was very good, Roederer's pinot noir had an herbal, almost medicinal feel. So we ended up with a bottle of sparkling (great, since that's what they're known for). I'm glad I came here because I notice their name on a lot of wine menus every time I eat out now. read more

What makes a $6 tasting fee worthwhile? 1. Having the opportunity to taste the same wine from a 750ml bottle and a Magnum (1.5L) 2. Tasting the '99 L'Ermitage 3. Tasting the '97 L'Ermitage from the magnum Seriously... the Magnum thing. It totally sounds like wine Bullsh*t. It's the same wine, just in a different bottle. Which is why it is such an incredible experience to get to do this for yourself. And then actually taste the difference. Crazy. So much better. The problem then is finding enough friends to come over and help you drink all your Magnums of bubbly. I also happen to really like the house style of Roederer. I find it to be a good bit richer then some of its counterparts. Plus the tasting room has gotten a good bit less stuffy over the years. Cough up the $6 and give it a try. Unless you have found some other place that does this for free. And don't say Korbel. Their wine is nasty. read more

Of all the vineyards we went to, Roederer let me down the most -- admittedly probably in part because we had such high expectations. The estate is certainly beautiful, though I feel like some of the bushes around the patio could have been shorter to let in more of the scenery. The guy leading the tastings was obviously overworked, as there were three groups of tastings, someone for a delivery, and someone purchasing a few cases, and there was ultimately a lot of time in between each of our pours. I will say, he did a good job keeping track of where everyone was during their tastings for the most part, though he barely spoke to us about any of the wines, which was disappointing. Can't say I loved any of the wines, either, and I tend to be a fan of sparkling wines. I found most of them too dry personally. Lastly, there was loud music playing in this large hall, which made the experience feel a bit more contrived. I'm glad we went but would not list it among my favorites. read more

The best part of tasting at Roederer is comparing the same [sparkling] wine served out of a 750mL bottle and our of a 1.5L bottle (magnum). It was amazing how different the 2 (same) wines tasted. I personally preferred the magnum smooth/creaminess but unfortunately don't have a need for a magnum of sparkling brut. Especially for $50. The sparklings here are very "French" tasting. Crisp and clean and not sweet. The story is that, in the 70's-80's, the Roederer family ran out of room to expand their winery in the Champagne region of France. They searched the world wide and finally found Philo, CA which had an almost identical climate. So here is where they settled to expand their sparkling wines. There was a bottle of Cristal on display along the tasting bar - but certainly no poppin' that cork! Can you imagine the cost of tasting Cristal? Tasting [6-8] wines cost $6 but if you buy a bottle, you get $3 off your bottle. The tasting room was nice and large. There are couches to rest on if you're the DD for the afternoon and the winery reminds guests that they have crayons and books for your kids. The room itself is bright and clean and roomy. The views are great since Roederer sits up on a small hill just off Hwy 128. The staff was very nice and offered to take a picture of Mom and me - even trekked out to the front of the winery to show us her popular photo-op spot. It was very quiet and relaxed here. It felt more refined. Perhaps that "expensive" $6 tasting fee keeps the moochers away? Please... $6? This is a beautiful tasting room in Anderson Valley. This is the California extension of the French wine company Champagne Louis Roederer. They offered a range of sparkling wines for tasting, including Brut, Brut Rose, and their L'Ermitage special Tête de Cuvée. All of the wines are enoyable, and I found it very interesting to taste the difference between their Brut in a standard bottle size vs. the same Brut in a Magnum. The only downside is that we visited as part of a Yelp event, and I don't think their staff was quite ready to handle the number of people that came to the tasting room. I look forward to coming back on a quieter day to enjoy the patio and a glass of bubbly. read more

This place was good for sparkling wine. They had a pretty normal tasting fee, but it was the only tasting in the area that I paid for. I'm more of a red wine drinker, but I also appreciated the L'Ermitage. It looks like I'm the only one that thought it tasted better from the smaller bottle...but I was also impressed that the bottle size made such a difference. I like that the tasting room kind of feels like a nice wine bar. The service was great, and you can't beat the view from the entrance. Also, they had the healthiest orchid I've ever seen. The tasting room is beautiful, and the server here friendly and professional, without a doubt the best tasting room experience in the valley here. Be prepared, the tasting equates to about two glasses, so we decided to split one. Of all the as many have noted, the difference in the magnum of Brut and the 750 is striking - I prefer the 750 quite a bit more. I ended up taking home a bottle of the Brut Rose of Pinot. Yeah, yeah, I bought a bottle of pink bubbly, and the label is actually pink as well.
