I started coming to IronGloves to train for an upcoming charity boxing match. In just two short weeks, I have learned a ton about proper technique while also losing a few pounds and inches off of my waist. In less than a month, I can already wear dress shirts that I had taken out of my rotation because I had gotten too heavy. I can also see my endurance improving rapidly. During my first personal training workout, I felt like I was going to pass out because I was so out of shape. Now, I'm powering through my workouts while still retaining proper form and technique. Lastly, I can't say enough about how amazing owners Joe and Renene are. Joe is a great trainer who really motivates you to reach your personal fitness goals. Renene is so incredibly approachable and always answers your calls and texts so quickly. She really works with you to ensure that you develop a routine that is rigorous, yet convenient. I will be a client at IronGloves for a long time to come!

Joe & Renenne are owners and easy to work with for memberships, classes, etc. They have all your need for sale on location and for good value: gloves, wraps, t-shirts and gym towels (which are mandatory but available for a mere $1, what else only costs 100 cents these days??) I've been a regular here for 3.5 years and am 49 years old. I participate in Tommy's sparring clases on Saturdays at 1:00. Come & get some.

Since AZ Combat Sports offers new students a free first class, I joined Ms. Official Badass Grace O. in an evening hour-long Muay Thai session of punching, pivoting and sweating. After filling out the necessary paperwork (A form basically saying don't sue them If you get hurt practicing, etc.), I was given a tour, and introduced to many cool and experienced students in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-jitsu), MMA, and Muay Thai. The class started with some cardio (Jump rope), then moved on to stretching and some muscle strength exercises. Since everyone else was not a newbie, the assistant instructor then gave me an individualized intro class where I learned the basics of punching while the others practiced kicks and punches with a partner. Since I used to take kenpo, a lot of the muscle memory I've retained doesn't fit into the style of Muay Thai fighting, at least where striking and hand movements are concerned. The instructor was patient though as he guided me through the different moves. I have to say I was a little disappointed I didn't get to kick anything today but I understand that you gotta start with the basics if you want to build a solid foundation of skills. Compared to a krav maga class I took a few years ago, I liked the atmosphere here better, and I appreciated the personal instruction. While the krav maga class has you jump right into action, practicing attack scenarios, the Muay Thai class focused more on form so that the punches and kicks you deliver have the most bang for your buck. I'm still debating whether to get back into a more traditional martial arts or more of a combat sport like Muay Thai, but if I do decide to go into Muay Thai this is the place to be!

Walking into any gym can be intimidating, but from the moment I stepped in to get information, I felt genuinely welcomed. Unlike many gyms that immediately push you to sign up, the front desk staff took the time to explain their drop-in classes so you could try it out first. That alone spoke volumes. Each coach has their own unique coaching style and knows exactly when to push you and when to encourage you. That energy carries through the entire gym and creates a real sense of community. Even on your worst day, the members become your biggest cheerleaders. It's been two years now, and Pro Edge is more than just a gym--it's home.

From day one, the coaches made me feel welcome and pushed me at the same time. Every class has great energy, and the mix of boxing, BJJ, and MMA keeps things interesting. What really stands out is the community. Nobody's trying to show off everyone helps each other, whether you're hitting mitts for the first time or preparing for your first fight. The coaches genuinely care about your progress and make you feel like part of the team. If you're looking for a place in Phoenix to train, get fit, and actually enjoy it, this is it. Joining Pro Edge has easily been one of the best decisions I've made for myself.

Don't get me wrong; he was incredibly intimidating at first (he has a reputation to maintain hahahah). However, Chavez Boxing Gym has become my unconventional second home. The gym's culture of support is pervasive, from cheering me on when I get my butt kicked sparring to surprising me with cupcakes on my birthday. Coach's attitude of respect and grit is infectious. Even the 50-year-old clients abide by the harsh "yes Coach, no Coach" vernacular. Apart from the culture, I can attest that my fitness and boxing technique has exponentially improved as well. Two years ago, I walked in not knowing the difference between a jab and a hook, but I now comfortably spar and throw combos on mitts. I can guarantee that lessons at Chavez Boxing Gym will not be easy. They challenge you, making you a more confident boxer and more disciplined human.

I've never boxed before but the thought of punching a bag has always appealed to me. Especially when work gets stressful. I've wanted to learn how to box but just timing never worked out, but yesterday I gave it a try here. This isn't going to be like formal boxing at all, more like a exercise version of boxing. It was still fun but different than I imagined. I thought I would be learning to box and kick the entire time but you only do that for about half the class. This studio is located right on Tempe Town Lake where there is a plaza for living, etc. It's in a busy part of Tempe and parking is tight here. You do have to park in the garage above the studio but your parking is validated every time you come for class, so that works out nicely. While the first class is free, if you don't bring your own wrap, the studio offers it for $25, seems a bit steep but then again this business has to stay open. They loan you boxing gloves free for your first class and provide towels. There are lockers here but for the life of me I can't figure out these self locking lockers, so I don't even bother to lock up my stuff. The ladies working here are very helpful and said they would watch my stuff. Two bathrooms available but will say the lobby is small and no place to sit while you wait for your class to start. They need a little bigger lobby. This class felt like the same ambiance is a cycling studio I used to go to, it's like being inside a club. I found the instructors mic set was way too loud and the music sound level will blow out your eardrums. I did see ear plugs available and next time will use them. Instruction was ok for me as I am new to boxing and could have used a few pointers but it's not like rocket science to figure out how to punch a bag, just keep punching and learn the specific moves later!! About 30 minutes of the class, you're working with weights, squats, burgers, lunges, core work out, etc. While I don't do this regularly, I definitely appreciated it as I want to do a bit more cross training. I also worked up a nice sweat and my HR was probably in 160s, I was working but not at my max. You begin class boxing and then come back to finish more boxing. I loved the boxing!! I like how boxing gloves feel when you punch the bag and there is a bounce/spring to it. What I really wanted to do too was to kick the heck out of the bag too. I want to learn how to kick on top of box. I enjoyed thie cardio boxing class and I did sign up for some more classes. They offer a 2 in 1 class deal and then after that you can either buy 4 classes a month for $89 or 5 drop in classes for $129. I'm ready to box some more! Great, fun workout and a nice variation to everything else I am already doing!

I got here early and was assigned a spot at the bag and bench and got some gloves to try for the class. Note that while you can use their gloves (Not sure if there is a rental fee after the initial class) you will have to buy your own wraps. I had my own wraps... well, I thought I had all of my wraps until I started to look around in my bag and realized I only brought one wrap while the other wrap was at home. What's a gal to do? Luckily the front desk person took pity on me and I was able to use a quick-wrap of theirs for this class on one hand while I used my own wrap for my other hand. I mention all this because I think for newbies, the quick wrap is probably the best type of wrap to use if you don't know good boxing form. I noticed after class that the quick-wrapped hand felt fine while my traditionally wrapped hand had some wrist soreness. Perhaps I needed to wrap my wrist with more fabric. If I take another class I'll be sure to modify my wrapping technique. The class itself had high energy and high VOLUME! The old fogey in me will have to wear ear plugs if I take a future class because my ears felt like how they do after being in a really loud club or at a rock concert. It took a few hours for my hearing to come back to normal. Pre-class, the instructor will go over the 6 moves for your bag. The numbers might be a bit hard to remember at first so there's a screen that reminds you what combo you should be doing and the instructor will come over too to correct anything you might need help with. We started on the bags. It was fun to do some punching and jabbing but the bags are so close to each other that if you are punching so hard that your bag moves, it might interfere with your neighbor's ability to move around. When we moved over to the benches we did exercises such as squats, burpees, and planks. My knees started to hurt a little after these few rounds (yep, old fogey here) but it wasn't too bad. There is also a screen here to remind you what the exercises look like. The last few rounds are back on the bag, doing more combos and freestyle moves. Overall it was fun and it was definitely a good cardio workout. I did get a little overheated during the bench part of the workout so I'll have to stay super hydrated if I were to take another class at Rumble.
