I really liked the ambience in this place, it is way nicer than most Mexican restaurants. That said, the food was average and the service was below average. I ordered the Mexican flag enchiladas. Really was not all that impressed even though it looks nice. The service here leaves a lot to be desired, very slow and screwed up the receipts. I also thought the price was way higher than what it should have been for the amount of food they give you. My girlfriend ordered cauliflower tacos, and the cauliflower wasn't even cooked the whole way through, plus it had very little flavor. I would probably give this place another chance, but I really don't know what I would order because they're really wasn't anything on the menu that looked all that enticing. read more

I finally got to try this gem of a restaurant over the weekend and let me tell you I'll be back! All of the food was made with quality ingredients and packed a flavorful punch. This Colombian - Mexican fusion will leave you craving more! Being that we went on the weekend I was glad that they took reservations and we were sat immediately upon arrival. We ventured out for some Mexican food today and decided on Gonza. They were not that crowded yet the service was lacking. I ordered street corn and coconut shrimp and my husband ordered 3 taco plate and a side of coconut rice. The taco plate was $19 for 3 street tacos which tasted good but seemed over for what you actually get. The coconut shrimp was very tasty but the shrimp are small, not jumbo. The chips and salsa were yummy and I liked that it wasn't packed but would have appreciated more service. It's way too dark in the whole place too for the middle of the day. read more

This is a different experience than you'll get at most Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants. By now, we are all familiar with the hundreds of "Los Genericos" places that have the same decor, the same menu, and the same tame fare. We are starting to see some places emphasizing quality over quantity. This is definitely in that vein. The menu will probably dissapoint some people. It is paired down but does offer some interesting new options. Overall, it is good and I would say better than a lot of standrad fare. Everything is punched up but you sacrifice the massive portion size. I suppose it just depends on you. If you want to gorge yourself on mediocre food and guzzle watered-down margaritas for less than $50 a person, then this isn't the spot. If you want a nice dinner, a nice cocktail, and don't mind paying a little more for better-but-less, then this is the spot. read more

Gonza Tacos Y Tequila is unique for the area it's in. It's a fun restaurant that you can go to for a special event or just a meal out. We've been coming here since it first opened. During that time, there were even less unique options for eating out, so I'm glad it's around. That said, this past visit admittedly, it was the experience that got me excited and not so much the food. It has been a few years since we came here and it just didn't live up to what I remember. I love the theming and the music, the patio option. I found my dish to be bland and for how quickly it came out, kinda lukewarm. I ordered the chicken tinga tacos. The flavor was just ok. I know we are an over salted people but it was so bland. I do recall that from prior visits. I got the chicken tortilla soup as my side and it just wasn't for me. It was a blended type soup, very corn forward and slightly sweet. I prefer a brothy chicken tortilla soup. My husband got a breakfast taco option as brunch was still happening and he said about the same. Just ok. The chips were very greasy. The salsa was good! Cold, fresh, good consistency. I can't say I won't come again because as mentioned, it's a fun atmosphere and I think our area needs places like this. The service was a little awkward too. Nice guy but he seemed anxious. I wonder if they are still figuring their way back out of the pandemic. I do see there are some good recent reviews so I could've just gone on an off day. I worked at Gonza for several years. The coworkers were fine, the issue was the environment, expectations, managers and Gonza himself. I was made to work and unable to call in sick with pink eye, the flu and more. Gonza himself is an absolute creep. Several of my coworkers left before I did due to Gonza speaking and engaging with them inappropriately. The whole restaurant dreaded when he came in every Sunday. Tried this place for the first time today. I didn't realize it closed at 8:30 so we were just sitting down when the hostess let us know that the kitchen would close in 10 minutes. It's been a while since last visit to the Wake Forest outlet of this local chain. For COVID, diners are spaced at every other table, inside and out. Servers are masked. Printed menus are out, now you scan the QR code at the table. A minor nit is that the on-line menu isn't exactly optimized for the small screen - it took a lot of scrolling. It was moderately busy on this Thursday night. Our server, Nicole did a great job keeping an eye on the table. Quick, friendly, unobtrusive service. Thank you! Chips and salsa are complimentary. Crisp, warm, not-greasy chips are served in a little colander. Salsa is house-made with crushed sweet tomatoes, onion and just enough jalapeno to add some kick without making your eyes water. Guacamole is always recommended, and it's excellent. Chunky, fresh avocado with onions, jalapeno and cilantro, also just enough kick to stimulate the taste buds. One of my favorites here is El Platano. This is a full plantain, split down the middle and stuffed with steak, a stripe of chile de arbol salsa and garnished with cheese melted over the top and sprinkled with cilantro. It's plated with paisa (pinto) beans. The texture and contrast of the sweet plantain, steak and spice of the salsa is perfect. It could use a little more steak in my opinion, but is very tasty. The chicken fajitas are the traditional prep - sizzling plate of peppers, onions and mushrooms plus strips of seasoned chicken, with guac, lettuce, cheese and the tortillas on the side. Good, though not special. I've always enjoyed the cool decor and the upscale not-your-typical-Mexican-fare at Gonzo. Ambiance was cool, that's it. The dish I got was 99% tortilla strips, the other bits were spaghetti sauce and chicken. The salsa and chips were horrible, seemed to be canned salsa and cheap store bought cold chips. The coconut rice had raisins, bland carne tacos, and the bacon mac and cheese was pretty spicy. We arrived around 5:15pm and we were promptly seated. Our server was kind and I ordered El Platano, which was delicious. It was a whole plantain stuffed with steak, surrounded by beans. Sooo good. My daughter got a cheese quesadilla from the kids menu. The atmosphere is very cool and very "Dia de los muertos"; so just give your little ones a heads up. The skeleton at the door scared my daughter so bad, I couldn't get a picture. Their chips and salsa was good. Warm chips and the salsa had a fresh pico feel. My husband I first tried a Gonza taco at a Duke game and fell in love. They are street taco sized but packed full of flavor. We decided that the next time we were in the area we would try the actual restaurant, which we did. I love the décor and atmosphere! It's so relaxed and fun. Waitress showed up right away and was very quick with the service. My husband ended up ordering the chilaquiles, which was good, but definitely did not have the same amount of flavor as the tacos. I ordered the braised beef tacos and they did not disappoint. So delicious! The only problem is that you have to order three of the same tacos and can't order three different types together. The menu is also a little on the higher priced side, so definitely not a spot we can visit on a regular basis. Overall, I am impressed. read more

This isn't our first time here and I'm sure we'll be back but tonight our service was somewhat lacking. True of a lot of restaurants lately with the shortage of staff. So I gave 4 stars to be generous. Everyone at our table of 4 had a good meal, including Chile Relleno, Steak Tacos, Tinga tacos. My only gripe would be the $1 up charge for plantains or $1 up charge for mac and cheese when ordering tacos. They are regular sides for the tacos so I don't understand it. Went on a Sunday night a few weeks back. Love that they take reservations. That's a good thing for those of us who have to drive from Raleigh. This night we ended up not needing them, but you never know. When we drove up we were greeted by parking signs that warned us not to park longer than (if I remember correctly) 40 minutes. Uh, okay, hope the restaurant knows that. I realize that they must do this because of The Factory, but still, it is a bit unwelcoming. We were seated at a table in the middle of the dining room, right behind a large family table. I ordered the Carnitas Chile Relleno. Husband (of course) did the Steak Burrito. He liked his okay, but I was very underwhelmed with mine. It felt not finished. There were cheese chunks on top that needed broiling or something. There was a large amount of okay carnitas on top of a poblano,but none of it came together as a perfect unity. I would definitely order differently next time we go back and also hope for a booth. Am happy to report that we made it out to our car within the allotted time limit. read more

Things here are priced higher than I would like, but at this time I am still giving them a 5-star rating for the quality food and drinks, as well as atmosphere and outdoor dining. They all freshly make all their own mixers for the various margaritas they sell versus premade, bottled with preservatives like some lower-end places that sell margaritas. Employees are also always friendly. Try their tequila flight--very nice, three samples, you pick-em. read more
