I asked for Goldplaited, but ended up with Great Clips quality work. My experience started off well with the concierge/host who took my jacket for me and showed me to my seat. The salon is really beautiful and clean, and it's obvious that the staff makes a concerted effort to ensure the comfort of their clients. I really wanted to love this place, but my stylist didn't listen to what I wanted. She definitely seemed to know what she was doing -- at the end of the appointment, I did ultimately get my hair done well -- but the problem is it wasn't what I asked for. To be clear, I went in for a wash and blow-out with heat styling afterwards, and that's what I got. But when my stylist asked me what kind of heat styling I wanted, I told her clearly I wanted beach waves. What I got instead were tight barrel curls. She sprayed my hair twice very lightly with hairspray and gave it a quick once over with some Moroccan oil and sent me on my way without asking if I was satisfied. By the time I was about to tell her I wasn't, she was already handing me my coat and ushering me to the host stand to pay for my service. All in all, not a bad experience -- but just be sure you're super clear with what you want from your stylist. I thought I was, but apparently not. She also seemed like she was in a bit of a rush, even though the salon was empty except for me and one other customer who was already being helped. I purchased the bridal package at Goldplaited, and cannot say enough amazing things about the staff. I've never had my make up professionally done, and I've also never had a dry blow out, so this whole thing was a new experience for me. The package includes a trial, and my stylists were so attentive and really listened to the style and look that I wanted. My hair and make up lasted all night at the trial. Then, on my wedding day, with some stress and anxiety about making sure things get done, again everything went so well. I walked out of there feeling great, looking great, ready to go. Fast forward one hour and my hair had completely fallen. Instead of bouncy blown out curls, I had kind of wavy hair. It looked good, but I kept thinking "If this is what it looks like after an hour, what is it going to look like at my actual wedding 3 hours from now?" I called, and they responded immediately and said I could come back and they would fix it. Well... i planned on it, but since it was my wedding day and all, I got caught up in pictures with my now husband and photographer, both of whom assured me repeatedly that my hair looked fine. So I called back and told them thanks, but I'm not going to be able to make it back to the salon. They said "Give us 15 minutes" and met me out, and re-did my hair in the bathroom of the brewery where we were taking photos. I have never in my life experienced customer service of that level. I had reached a point where I had just convinced myself that there are more important things in life than my hair (e.g. my new husband) so to have the Goldplaited staff turn it around and make me a priority to them was almost unbelievable. If I could give zero stars, I would. Long story short DO NOT go to this establishment if you are getting your hair/make-up done for any special event or want to look decent. If you have to go here, make sure you have a "trial" run done before the actual event day, because you will need to coach the individuals through how to do their job/give you anything close to what you asked for. I had seen this place recommended multiple times on neighborhood Facebook groups (only to realize later it was the employees recommending it) and saw the decent reviews, but I was a fool to believe them. I went here to get my hair and make-up done for a small wedding ceremony. Due to COVID and many individuals having smaller wedding ceremonies that were not planned way in advance, they were offering a package where you did not go in to have "trial" runs of the hair and make-up done. You would send picture samples of what you were wanting to their salon email (which it was one of the owners, Coco, that I was corresponding with) and she sent them to their "beauty team" and then you would go the day of the event to have your hair/make-up done. This alone was $300... and that is a HUGE waste of money to essentially look like a clown at the wedding (I could have done something better at home). I had merely asked for more loose/beachy waves and neutral toned, natural looking make-up. I had gone through many many pictures online to find examples of what I was looking for (with examples of a similar hair color too so we could be realistic if that look would fit my strawberry blonde hair color and similar eye colors to keep the tones of the makeup looking appropriate). Seems easy enough, right? Well apparently not... When I got to my appointment, there were two individuals who started working on me (one for hair and one for make-up). They did not introduce themselves at all, did not go over to talk to me about what I wanted (I am not even sure they saw the picture examples I had sent with what my outcome was) and they TURNED ME AWAY FROM THE MIRROR AND NEVER ASKED ME HOW I FELT ABOUT MY HAIR/MAKE-UP UNTIL THEY WERE DONE. My appointment was supposed to be scheduled for 2 - 2.5 hours that morning, it barely took them a little over an hour to "finish" and when they turned me around to the mirror I was speechless... I had specifically asked in my email correspondences and picture examples for loose/beachy waves. I HAD A TEASED DOME ON TOP OF MY HEAD AND RINGLET CURLS. For my make-up I had asked for neutral, natural tones, WELL I HAD PURPLE EYESHADOW AND SO MUCH BLUSH I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO THE CIRCUS... They then hurried me to pay and leave, all the while the owner was sitting watching this mess happen at the desk just sipping her Starbucks. Needless to say, even though they were done about an hour or so early, that was not enough time to even go home to wash my hair/face and fix that disaster before the wedding... This ruined all of the pictures and my confidence for the entire ceremony. NOT ONLY did this clown hair/make-up partially ruin the day for me, for about TWO MONTHS afterwards, every time I washed my hair it would smell strongly of burnt hair. Luckily the smell finally went away (so didn't seem to be burn damage but it took so long for the cheap hair products' chemicals to wash out of my hair). This added to the negative experience as it wasn't just one day I was reminded of how bad it looked, but every time I washed my hair I was reminded of the experience and was worried my hair had burn damage... I hope that whoever is wanting to come to this salon in order to look special for an event takes my advice and stays away. Unless you have endless time and money to throw away at this salon, it's better to either do your hair/make-up yourself at home or find somewhere else... read more

I rarely wear makeup, so when it came time for my big day, I knew I needed to hire a professional because I was out of my league. Initially, I went through Thumbtack and booked a makeup artist who came to my home for a trial. While nice, her vision of natural makeup was not my vision of natural makeup; I felt like the look was too heavy even after having her tone it down. I didn't feel like the best version of myself; I didn't even feel like I looked like me and actually felt self-conscious. I guess that's the whole idea of a trial run, right? My hairdresser told me she sends people to goldplaited for makeup or hair when she's unavailable, so I booked another trial there. I really wish I recalled the name of my makeup artist, she actually did my trial and my day of makeup. I told my makeup artist about the trial experience I had and what I didn't like about. I also told her I was torn between going for a more natural lip color or bright red to match my dress; where the other artist told me either would be fine, she actually gave me advise on when to go bold and when not to. I ended up opting for a natural lip this time around. What I loved about the trial was that she would stop along the way and check my comfort level with the makeup to ensure we were still on the same page (I only got a final reveal during my other trial, I didn't even think to ask her to check the progress). The whole thing took close to an hour and she made notes at the end of my trial, which was extremely helpful. The day of, I arrived at goldplaited after having my hair done. Since I had done a trial, they were able to pull up the notes and get right to work. I was also able to pick up a tube of the lip color she used to reapply throughout the day. My makeup took about 30 minutes, which was perfect as I was stressed about running behind schedule the whole day. Wow. I am so impressed with this place!!! I scheduled a makeup application for a gala and was paired with Becky. She was so personable. The entire staff was actually very professional and very friendly. I had gone to another salon nearby to get my hair done and wasn't pleased with my end results. I asked if they could have someone at Goldplaited touch up my hair and redo my curls. They were able to have someone do my hair while Becky was doing my makeup - I was so grateful! They made me feel like a celebrity. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. They also have some of their makeup available for purchase. Purely based on my service, 3 stars. I decided to be cheap and do the training makeup session for $20 (cost is pretty good because it gives the new hires an opportunity to horn their skills) last weekend. Great price overall for make-up. The girl I had was really nice and professional but I noticed that my brows were slightly off at the end. She did fix it so no complaints for $20 - 4 stars. The reason why I took off another star was because I am Asian and the makeup job is geared towards non-Asians. It looked good but the color pallets were the dark glam look that does not necessarily look good with mono lids or my skin type. My (non-Asian) friend got her wedding hair and makeup done and it looked amazing (hair and make-up with airbrush) - 5 stars. Her sister (non-Asian) got the same deal as me with the same girl and her makeup looked awesome for $20 - 5 stars. My other (Asian / double lid) friend got her hair and makeup and to be honest, her curls came undone after like 2 hours (she has nice thick Asian black hair) and again, the makeup (done by a different person) was nicely applied but not flattering to her skin tone. I felt really bad for her cause she paid over $100 for the blow out and makeup - 2 stars for effort. Ambiance: Very very nice, hip, posh look. Staff is super nice and welcoming. Came here during lunchtime to get an updo for a wedding and was pleased! I love the online booking system and hope all salons will follow suit. The online system is very user-friendly and allows you to book, reschedule, and cancel. I didn't get to select a hair stylist but was assigned to Sarah. The location is great because it's extremely close to the Brown line stop. It's a few minutes walking distance. If it takes you more than five minutes to get to the salon from the Brown line stop, then I don't know what to think. The salon itself is pretty vibrant and well-lit. It has a pretty simple look and staggered wall mirrors so that you can't see your reflection across the salon when sitting in your chair. Perhaps on purpose so that you're surprised at the end? I really liked the service. Sarah was very personable and did an amazing job on my hair. She finished within the hour even though I was about 10 minutes late due to the train! Updo is $65, which seems fair compared to other salons. I recommend this place! read more

I really like the idea of this place and have been here a few times for conditioning treatments. The olaplex seemed to work well, but the actual blowouts were hit or miss. This last visit sealed the disappointment for me. Two of my friends and I scheduled an appointment to get blowouts. They explained that only one girl would be able to get a wash. My hair was pretty curly still so I asked if they'd be able to work with it with the dry style that they were suggesting. I was told yes, and we agreed to those terms. Once there they started working on my friends' hair without explaining to me that someone would be over soon. So after about 10 min I had to ask. It was only a few minutes after that my stylist came over, but it's nice to know that in the beginning. Then when I discussed with my stylist what I'd like, I was told that I wasn't scheduled for a wash. So when I asked while scheduling if they could still style curly hair, they really couldn't. So I went with a braid and just had them touch up the curls. It was still a little cute, but not what I was going for. So then we go to pay. $50...$40 for the "blow out" and $10 for the braid (they were upfront about the braid cost.) I was honestly surprised I got charged for a full blowout. I reminded her it was just dry styling, but it was the same cost. For half the work. For a non-fresh style. Again surprised. Curly girls I wouldn't do it. I wish I would've sat out. My other friends (that don't have curly hair) had cute styles, but they were touching up the curls within a couple hours. My love affair with this place began when I saw a woman crossing the street with the most fabulous blowout I had ever seen. I had to find out where she got it and lo and behold, she had just come out of Goldplaited! I have their Prep Pass because if my hair isn't done my students say I look "interesting," and ain't nobody got time fo' that! I go to Goldplaited twice a week and always feel like a million bucks when I leave. The decor makes me happy, they offer you something to drink when you arrive, and the owners will chit chat with you while you wait. My hair isn't easy to work with (takes hours to dry and is very thick) and they take that into account when they pair me with a stylist, but trust me, I'm always looking around and they've got some solid people working there. Beautiful blowouts, curls, updos, and makeup all around! Marisol is my go to because on top of giving me amazing hair we get along really well and I get to tell her all of my life gossip. I've been wanting to check Goldplaited out for a long time and a good friend's wedding this past weekend finally gave me a good excuse. The online booking system is super easy and efficient and I'd recommend using it to make an appointment. I booked a blowout and when I arrived for my appointment I was greeted by very friendly staffers who took my coat and offered me a beverage. I was a bit disappointed I didn't get any champagne as others have mentioned in their reviews but hey that's what the wedding is for, right? As for the styling experience it was extremely relaxing and they do an amazing job. They start out with a short scalp massage and then take you to get your hair washed. I'm a big fan of an aggressive hair wash and mine was not amazing. What was amazing though was my the blow out! Goldplaited has photos on their web site of their different styles and and I opted for the wavy look. I have a LOT of very curly hair and I won't lie I was pretty skeptical of whether the stylist was going to be able to manage my hair and whether it would actually work. Let me tell you I was proven WRONG. The stylist did an amazing job (see pictures) and the style held extremely well throughout a ton of dancing! I also received a ton of compliments. Their customer service is one of a kind (owners Mal and Co are just great), they have a talented team of technicians plus their salon space is gorgeous! I cannot begin to describe how disappointed I was with my hair and customer experience. First, let's start off with the hair - the stylist asked me to show her a photo of what I wanted my BLOWOUT to look like based on their Instagram hashtag. Let me tell you, every photo shown was nothing but the same exact type of curls. I'm sorry - I thought I was coming in for a blowout, not an extreme curly look. Whatever, I showed her a photo of a blowout with loose waves toward the end. At the end of my appointment, my hair was hair-sprayed and parted to the side with TIGHT done curls as if I was attending an event of some sort. All I wanted was a blowout. Fine, I didn't make it a big deal because I could just sleep on it and hopefully I'd wake up with it looking more natural. It didn't end there though - my friend and I went to check out and it seemed as though there was a discrepancy with our Gilt voucher. We purchased 1 voucher that included 3 blowouts. The owner, I assume, told us that the voucher is per person. Ok, fair, but as new clients we hoped that they would look past this and just exclude 2 blowouts from the voucher. The owner would not accommodate and wanted us to pay the difference instead even though her salon would be paid the same amount by Gilt regardless. Even after stressing the importance of customer experience/satisfaction, she didn't care. All she cared about was the extra $40 for the blowout, which was extremely distasteful in my opinion. Safe to say we will NOT be returning nor sending out referrals. There are much better blow-dry bars in Chicago that will offer both a great service and experience. read more

I just had Goldplaited do my blowout and makeup for my engagement pics which seemed to be the trend yesterday (poor fiance's missing football Sunday, that's love). I got in 30 minutues before my appt but was taken right away. I will say, I wasn't thrilled with my blowout since my stylist who normally cuts my hair typically does the 6+ round brush method, which I love. The tech that did mine at goldplaited just did a normal blow out like I do at home, so that was a bit disappointing since it fell rather quickly after it was done. The makeup on the other hand was perfect! I felt so glam after and will update with pics as soon as I get them from my photog. I came in armed with pinterest pic ideas and the makeup artist did a great job of recreating. I think I will definitley consider the makeup again for my wedding but would probably go elsewhere for the blow out. read more

I created a yelp account just to give this place a review. I signed up for a hairstyle and makeup application for New Year's Eve. I booked relatively last minute, so the only option left was a "Kim k" - dry hairstyle and makeup. I was leery of a dry blowout as I've never heard of that before, but apparently it is their specialty. I loved my entire experience! I was transformed in an hours time. My hair stylist and makeup artist worked on me at the same time and didn't miss a beat. I could tell they were used to working together and the quality of each service did not suffer at all. My hair and makeup looked flawless from 2 pm until 2 am without a touch up! Also impressive was the friendliness and vibe of the salon. They were jam packed for NYE but everyone from the front desk to the artists, to the girls getting coats and drinks were so sweet and friendly! All the styles walking out the door looked beautiful. This is a bridal horror story: I booked bridal makeup services with Goldplaited almost 9 months before my wedding. I booked them for a few reasons: 1. They are rated really well on yelp 2 I have vitiligo; not all make up artists know how to work well with clients who have vitiligo (I was turned down by a few who didn't have enough expertise--which I so respect them upfront about...we'll come back to this point later) and Goldplaited said they had enough in house expertise to do my make up well. 3. I really liked my interactions with the owner Coco. She was super responsive, really kind, professional and easy to work with and it left me with an initial good impression of the business. Gold-plaited recommends doing your make up trail relatively close to your wedding date; based on my experience I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT FOLLOWING THEIR ADVICE ON THIS. They charged me $150 since I was not using fake eyelases or airbrush makeup. I went in three weeks before my wedding for my trial, and was placed with Natalia (because she's supposedly good with 'natural makeup'). The requests I had were simple: I wanted my eyes to be opened up a bit and I wanted to look ethereal and glowy; like the best version of myself. When I arrived, I was greeted really warmly by Coco and she passed me off to Natalia who asked me what products I liked to use and I let her know that I really like Dior's Glow Maximizer, Lancome's Definicils mascara, and Benefit's Browzings . In retrospect, I am not sure why she asked me what products I wanted to use because Goldplaited has their own in house brand that is nothing like Lancome, Benefit, or Dior. No shade, but Goldplaited's in-house brand is more in line with drugstore makeup like Covergirl or Maybelline. Anyway, things went down hill from here. Here's what happened next: 1. Natalia asked me what type of moisturize I like to use: I told her I don't put any oil on my face but instead have been using a natural Aloe moisturizer from Whole Foods for years that my esthetician has signed off on. She said "okay" and painted a strong smelling moisturizer on. 2. She then went to work 'opening up my eyes" by painting a THICK line of eyeliner on my eyelids with the fattest part of the line toward my inner eye. I have almond shaped eyes and at this point I started feeling like I was working with an amateur. I am not a professional, but even I know that when you're opening up an almond shaped eye, this is a NO NO. I asked her to take it off, which she did and I decided to pass on eyeliner with her all together. 3. Natalia then went to work on my eyebrows. She made me look crazy: First too harsh, then too big, then completely uneven. At this point I said "don't worry about it, I will do my own eyebrows the morning of" ( Sidebar: At this point in the make up application, I was super concerned. Since it was now 3 weeks before my wedding date, Goldplaited felt like my only option and I was super panicked about how to salvage the situation and since I needed make up done for my wedding day, I really wanted to make it work with them even though I felt like Natalia was complete dud ). 4. Natalia then "strobed" my face by smearing some shimmery power on my cheeks (FYI, this was after I mentioned that I prefer cream highlighters) and put blush on my cheeks. The strobe job was ridiculous and left me feeling like Natalia doesn't know what strobing is. 5. To cap things off with my look, Natalia then pulled out some mascara to do my lashes. I almost gasped when I saw that she pulled out a basic LOREAL MASCARA...I haven't had Loreal or any other drugstore makeup/mascara on my face since I was 12. What type of make up artist uses LOREAL? especially when you're charging someone $75 for a trial? To make everything oh so much worse, after 5 minutes, my face started tingling and burning. Coco came over and gave me a wipe and I ended up having to wash my face in the back sink. When I looked in the mirror MY ENTIRE FACE WAS COVERED IN RED HIVES. It took two days for my skin to look and feel normal again. Before leaving the salon, I asked to see the moisturizer that had been used on me and later read that it was loaded with oil and not oil-free. I explicitly said that I do not use oil on my face so I am beyond disturbed that Natalia lacquered it on. Under the circumstances, Goldplaited gave me a full refund even though their bridal services are non-refundable (good on them). I still would not recommend them for bridal make up; they should have simply said they couldn't do my make up...it would have saved me a lot of drama and heartache in prepping for my wedding. While I cannot say anything really negative about the the salon (minus the quality of their make up...which is shitty). I thought Natalia was the absolute worst. read more

Attention all brides!!! This is the place to get your hair and make up done for your big day. The bridal package is very reasonable priced for everything that it includes (trial hair and make up run, airbrush, lashes, and tip for both stylists)! The trial run is crucial and a huge perk with this package! I went into my trial thinking I knew exactly what I wanted. Both stylists listened and gave me the looks that I asked for. After going home, I decided I wanted to switch up a few things with my hair and make up. I immediately emailed the bridal team with my edits and included pictures of what I wanted changed. They were very receptive and reassuring that they could achieve what I desired. On the day of my wedding, they allowed me to come 30 minutes prior to my scheduled appointment to review my changes in person and to make sure I would still get out on time. I must admit, i was doing some big changes to my hair and a few changes with my make up so I was really nervous if everything would turn out ok. IT DID!! Andrea did my make up and she did an amazing job! She is very detail orientated and makes you look absolutely stunning. Krista was my hair stylist and she achieved precisely what I wanted. I changed how I wanted my hair styled pretty drastically from my trial run and she nailed it! I have never felt more beautiful! When my husband saw me for the first time that day, he was takin aback (in a good way =) ). My hair and make up lasted all day and night. Also, this salon is taking the proper COVID precautions and I never felt nervous or unsafe. You are socially distanced from the other clients and stylists. Everyone is wearing a mask and you wear a mask the entire time (even during hair and eye makeup application) until they need to start with your face makeup. I highly recommend this place!! I had such a great experience with Goldplaited! I got my hair and makeup done for my bridal shower. They allowed me to come in 30 min before they opened because I was in a time crunch. I showed the artists pictures of what I had in mind and they asked me several questions to make sure we were all on the same page. The two artists worked on my hair and makeup at the same time and had me looking beautiful in about an hour! I wish I remembered the hair and makeup artists names because they deserve a huge shoutout. I got so many compliments on my hair and makeup all day!
