Do I think I can one up my man Will's review? Hells no! But I think we can both tell you that this is some of the best Americanized Chinese food you will ever have. I've been to places both in LA and in NY, and you will STILL be hard pressed to find a place better than Golden Wok. The 1 to 10 scale on spice always holds true (I've had up to a eight, and wouldn't mind venturing up a notch), so they are definitely willing to accommodate the taste for heat. The service rates from vaguely rude (but only if can't handle someone being curt toward you), to quirky, to very friendly. Unless otherwise stated, never have I once had to wait longer than 10 minutes for my food and the order is ALWAYS correct. What more could you want from a Chinese food place in the hook? read more

I've had the best meal of Chinese food in my entire life (order included Sesame Tofu, Garlic String Beans, Steamed Vegetable Dumplings) at Golden Wok. I highly recommend ordering Sesame Tofu (it's not on the menu, but vegetarians rejoice-- it's lightly breaded tofu, fried and cooked in the delicious sauce of Sesame Chicken). The family who owns Golden Wok is nice, if frequently rushed, and will take the care to make your order the way you want it. It's a great neighborhood Chinese food restaurant, but just note that when they are busy, quality of food declines a little bit. Your best bet is to go a little early (5pm) or for lunch. Food is inconsistent at best. Quart containers are NEVER FULL. I am trying to figure out how to post a photo of tonight's disappointment... among the rest of the food, what was suppose to be a quart was 3/4 full. This is not the first time. At about 3:15 yesterday we entered Golden Wok to place an order that we would pick up after running other errands. The place was packed! Many college students were seated at the tables eating. The ordering and pick-up processes were seamless. The cashier read our order back to us as we ordered, which I definitely appreciated. The food was delicious. The mei-fun (spelling?), pork fried rice, dumplings, and vegetables in garlic sauce were all delicious. The vegetables were still crispy and had a lot of color. The food clearly contained a lot of salt (like all Chinese food), but it did not taste salty. My only semi-complaints are that the beef in the beef and broccoli was a little tough and they do not have tea in tea bags. I will definitely get Golden Wok again next time I am in Red Hook! read more

HOORY!!! Ten years they have been in service and they are making it big with new dishes! The Peking Duck Spring Roll...i'm drooling already just thinking about it. Pretty much a piece of duck skin and meat with hoisin sauce and cream cheese...yes, that's right, CREAM CHEESE!!! Good neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Food is well prepared and ready for quick takeout. They also have a few tables for dining at the restaurant. While the menu doesn't break any new culinary ground, the food is an excellent representation of American Chinese cooking with all the expected favorites such as General Tsos chicken, moo shoo pork, egg foo young, fried rice, etc. The owners are also happy to cook special request items tailored to your preferences. I'm visiting Bard College from New York City and this review is based on my one and only visit. I had a vastly different experience than the 5 star reviews here. I was craving what I call "egg roll" chinese food (americanized/non-authentic chinese food) and this place looked like it fit the bill. The place looks like it's owned and run by a family. In fact, a teenager took my order and there was an even younger son running around helping with taking orders from the chef to the front between homework equations. I ordered crispy orange beef with brown rice. It took a little over 20 minutes from order to mouth! In fact, 2 people who came in 5 minutes after me were served first and "the family" that ran the place, sat down to eat dinner all before my order came up! I asked if it would be up soon and the woman behind the counter says "yes, crispy takes longer." Well, when I got the order, it was crispy all right. Almost like crisp pieces of flavorless - "something?!?!" I couldn't figure out what cut of beef they used. After taking one apart, it looked like they opened a can of beef stew, took out the beef chunks, battered it, and fried it up. That's the most accurate description I can give. The "orange sauce" was not even orange flavored except for the raw bitter zest or more like RINDS that were thrown in with everything. It wasn't sweet nor tart. Just lightly bitter and bland. I was starving so I ate about a third of it but couldn't continue. Now, I wasn't going for "authentic." I would have been perfectly happy with a well fried piece of flank or skirt steak in a simple lightly sweet orange sauce. But - I didn't get that. I felt bad because "the family" really seemed nice. All the kids were around helping with the family biz (it looked like the uncle was in the back cooking). I want to support small businesses, but this place was just not good! I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt- I came in at a busy time and my food took over 30 minutes to come out. (Pretty slow for a take-out Chinese place) My girlfriend's Lo Mein and Eggroll were both excellent. I was surprised at the quality of the Shrimp egg-roll especially. However, the sesame duck I ordered was way too rich. The sesame sauce was almost honey-thick, and the heaviness of the breading made it even harder to eat. I'm the type of guy who'll eat anything and I was only able to get halfway through it before throwing the towel in. I'd go back again, but I'd stick to the "safer" menu options unless you're familiar with how they make the dish. They also have a $10 Card minimum so be prepared. read more

As a college student, I enjoy cheap and delicious food. Golden Wok is your best bet to encompass both of those elements. However, the best part about this place is the entertainment value. Go here during their busy period, and eat in. The anxiety the main lady experiences (along with her sassy and hilariously rude son) is amusing to no end to watch. Dinner and a show??? Soggy vegetables in unpalatable sauces served with low quality meats and a healthy helping of rude. The food is always ready because it's anything but fresh. Choose from the authentic dishes posted on the back wall. Soooooo yummy. Spicy...tasty...large portions. It's a takeout...so no bathroom...but people sit and eat. Unlimited hot tea. Walk to the gas station for a restroom. People are very friendly. And awesome jade plants. read more

String beans with hot bean sauce, clams with sha cha sauce, ma po tofu, firm tofu with pork, fen dan mian, and singapore noodles are my favorites. Generous portions, as well. This is a great little Chinese restaurant with a very nice family running it. We've been going here the past couple of years all the way from New Paltz because there aren't many good Chinese food restaurants in this area. This one beats food we've had in big cities. Mango chicken is very good. So is pork with bean sprouts. Crab rangoons and cold sesame noodles are very good appetizers. The family is always helpful and friendly, and it's very clean. We look with doubt on some of the reviews on this page which claim "food poisoning", or bad tasting "greasy" food, or bad service. These reviews look more to me like a bunch of snotty, spoiled college kids who dorm at the schools around here and don't know how to behave. Many of them are obnoxious and we've seen them behaving so at this restaurant. read more

The food's edible, and will scratch the chinese-take-out itch, but it's not very good. They have the worst service of anywhere I've ever been. They tend to get very busy, but that's not really an excuse. My friend and I went in, ordered to eat there, and sat at the table, and waited. Nothing happened for about 45 minutes, finally when we went up to ask they gave us a take-out bag. We told them we had intended to eat at the restaurant, and he said that was fine, but didn't give us any plates or chop sticks. When we asked if we could have some plates, and he completely ignored us. When we asked the kid (about middle school age) who's part of the family that runs it for a plates, he threw paper plates at us. Since then, we're not going back. if you really want to scratch your chinese itch go to Jade Palace in Rhinebeck or one of the places in Kingston. I work in Rhinebeck and if you look, there's not a lot of options plus the Chinese spots upstate can certainly be a hit and miss. I stumbled upon the Golden Wok in Redhook and I was BEYOND PLEASED! I definitely recommend this restaurant if you're in the area, you won't be disappointed. The food taste clean and its prepared like they put love into it . If you like indifferent cooking and less than pedestrian food this is your place. Subgum had large slices of undercooked vegetables including celery no less . Wontons were all noodle and scant meat and flavorless-soup. Just finished moving in. Wanted some classic Chinese -- 3 colors of plastic sauce packets (possibly a 4th red one), crunchy noodles, cardboard in the bottom of the paper bag, possible availability of fried chicken wings with french fries or fried rice in Styrofoam. What I got was: General Tso's -- no heat at all and no flavor other than sweet, minimal amount of sauce made from orange-whip and corn starch with no extraneous flavors. Pork Fried Rice -- thought it was plain brown rice when I opened the container. Seriously. Not much of anything at all going on here. Flavor-free. Hot and Sour soup -- OK Beef Chow Fun -- Total Fail. Threw it out. Pork Lo Mein -- OK but minimal sauce, minimal flavor. Was it a bad night? I read other reviews. Maybe I'll try one thing on another night. =================== OK, tried it another time: It was way better and it seems like my first visit was on a bad night. Chow fun was better -- still light on flavor and sauce but there was some flavor this time. The noodles were cooked closer to right this time and didn't form a fused noodle mass. We ate it and felt like we did indeed have chow fun and finished it but we didn't celebrate. Hot and sour soup was among the best we've had in the Valley. Lots of mushrooms, veggies and just the exact right amount of heat. Nicely done. The family that owns this place are really nice (my first time here I was in a hurry and didn't get to talk) I feel like I could ask them to go heavy on the flavor and they would. Most creative Asian menu in Hudson Valley and if an item is not on the menu the owners will do their best to make it for you. Everything made in house from Peking ducks to homemade noodles etc. The ambiance can be tough to get used to but once you know the place and how busy they are you will really like it here. Salmon teriyaki with Chinese greens is outstanding as are all of the dishes and they also run lots of daily specials. Living up here after being a NYC girl, I know good Chinese food! We don't have many choices here, so we keep going back. I think for lomein, egg rolls, soups......you are safe. However, getting into chicken dishes, or seafood, the meat is really mysterious sometimes. Last time it was rubbery and just plain scary. I think we're done going back. read more
