Szechuan King is your stereotypical cheap Chinese place Upstate. Prices are disturbingly cheap. Owner will not take your name if you call for takeout. Place is clean but looks a little beat up. Food is good for what it is, especially given what you're paying. Best things I've found are the fried rice and sesame chicken. Lo mein is also solid. Avoid the more complex things on the menu and you'll do fine. Some people are cultish when it comes to this place and I don't get it. I do prefer the the Chinese place in town, however it gets much worse than this folks. During Covid, they've shut down the dining room and have a table blocking the entrance to take out. Everyone is in the kitchen cooking, they're busting their humps trying to keep up (lots of people still not going out to eat), and they only occasionally come to the window to give food/take orders. They badly need to hire someone to man the window, as every time I come here now the food is late and there's a crowd of people standing around waiting for their food. Easily the best Chinese food in 50 miles, including all of the Capitol District. We live within a quarter mile, so we always order takeout. The portions are extremely generous and flavors are terrific. We've lived here 35 years, and order from Szechuan King at least monthly, which makes up about 3/4 of our annual dining "out". We've dined in occasionally, and the service and dining room are excellent. An idiosyncracy is that they nearly always promise fifteen minutes for takeout. I think that's because they don't want you to show up late. If they say twenty or thirty minutes, you know they're busy, deservedly so. I specifically recommend the spicier dishes, like General Tso's chicken. It's a terrific combination - great Chinese food, fast, and very convenient. read more

There is good good Chinese food (think authentic, less oily, flavorful), and good bad Chinese food (think most Americanized Chinese food, orange chicken, egg rolls, etc). I generally enjoy both, and hoped Szechuan King fell into the second category because I had a real craving. However, for me, it firmly falls into mediocre bad Chinese food. The fried dumplings are oil bombs, and soft and saggy. Anyone would do better to just buy frozen dumplings from a store. The pork and garlic fared a little better, but you could taste both the MSG and oil dripping off of the dish. I asked for spicy, and couldn't taste any spice involved. 2.5 stars, had to round down because frozen supermarket food from Price Chopper may be better. read more

Wouldn't recommend. Tried for the first time after moving to the area and not impressed at all. Got a few different things to have a variety and almost all of it was bad. Got Beef Lo mein which the noodles were chewy and all stuck together. The beef itself was tasteless and chewy as well. Fried dumplings were okay with the sauce. Nothing to write home about. Sweet and sour chicken and pork was by for the best. 4/5 for those however the sweet and sour sauce was not good. The fried rice that came with is was good as well. Great place for chinese take out. The owner is really down to earth and just a nice fun guy in general. We started coming here about 8 months now, and so far everything we ordered is really good. A favorite of ours is the cashew chicken, general tso chicken, and the beef chow fun is really good too. They been here for like 33 years, so apparently they are doing something right. Wow, I'm so happy I found this place. In my (lengthy) experience with american Chinese food, I've found there are different tiers. There is sit down restaurant fancy Chinese food, there's cheap take out Chinese, there's very cheap takeout Chinese, and then there's the best of all, the rarest of bird sightings, the top tier cheap Chinese takeout place that's a little more expensive and so much better. That's this place. It's really the best of all worlds. They were only open for takeout, so I haven't eaten in. But it looks real nice. I'm eating the food now and it's so good. Everything is just a little bit better than your average cheap Chinese place. The lomein are the right texture, Delicious. Dumplings, spot on. I'm eating the sesame chicken and you can actually taste the chicken. Tastes like there's ginger in the sauce. Again, just a little extra care put in everything. You know a good sign for a Chinese takeout place is how good the sauce they give you for the dumplings is. A lot of the time they all give you the same type of thing and it's like a solid C, but every once in a while a restaurant like this takes it up a knotch. If they're putting that much effort into the dumpling soy sauce, you know they're really thinking about everything, and trying to make the best food they can for the price point. Hell yeah. Look man, I just worked all day and im eating sesame chicken and lomein, so I mean if you're looking for some cute healthy Chinese than maybe you'll be disappointed? This is the worst Chinese food I have ever had, and there aren't that many good places out there. I never expect anything good, but this time takes the prize. This was our first time in Saugerties and since we had eaten a late lunch, we just wanted to take back something to eat in the hotel room. When we got back to the hotel, we opened the bag to discover the food, 2 packets of duck sauce, 2 packets of soy sauce, 2 packets of the other stuff, and 2 fortune cookies. What is missing you ask? Fucken chopsticks or a fork or any kind of utensil that I can use to eat this terrible food. Ok, this could be fixed. We're in a hotel...with a diner next door, they probably have everything. I call the desk and he has nothing. Nothing at all. (That will be another review) We purchased 2 vegetable egg rolls and a vegetable lo mein which apparently does NOT include eating equipment. We start with the egg rolls and it's pure grease with no flavor. That's fine, just what I was expecting and at least that is hand friendly. When I went to look at the lo mein, I was mortified. I had never seen lo mein noodles all clump together so you can take a bite like a cake. They were glued together! There was no flavor at all and a lot of grease. I never use soy sauce, but we needed salt so we used that. Still no flavor change. Overall, I would say this was terrible. The man who took the order and made the food was not friendly at all, but Chinese restaurants rarely are. They make sure to make as little communication with the customer as possible. They highlight their awful food with faded, oversized photos glowing above so you can choose based on the tantalized photos. My favorite is when people thinks it looks delicious. read more

I was excited to try this place for the first time. After ordering 2 things, they said it would take an hour until it is ready. After returning an hour later, they said it would take a little longer. It ended up taking a half hour longer and on top of that, we walked away with only half of our order since they ran out of dumplings. Chicken and Broccoli! Ok, this is a bit odd for me to review, as I havent eaten here in like, 15+ yrs. But I compare all Chicken and Broccoli to that of the Szechuan King. As a child I hated eating new foods. Then one day a friend practically forced me to split her order of Chicken and Broccoli with her. I loved it! I ended up eating here often and I dont think I ever ordered anything else. I have moved all over the country since then, and widened my palate alittle since then (though i'm still not exactly an adventurous eater). Had the spring roll, vegetarian steamed dumplings and chicken noodle soup. The spring roll was so greasy I couldn't eat it and threw it away. The dumplings had a really weird chemical taste and were filled with only onions and a scant amount of something green. I threw those away too. The soup was very bland, also greasy, not very good but I kept that because I'm starving. Another nice note: no heat in here even though there are 4 tables. Here I sit writing this review at 4 in the morning.....why you ask am I mentioning this? Because the meal that we consumed 8 hours ago is churning in my stomach.......preventing me from going back to sleep and only reminding me how Non-committal that meal was. From the shrimp egg rolls with the mushy insides to the Hot and Sour Soup that was neither Hot (Spicy) nor Sour to the Spicy Eggplant with garlic sauce that was NOT spicy or garlicky AT ALL. If something is listed as spicy or garlicky or whatever......IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST THAT. The wonton soup came in what tasted like very slightly salty water.......By no means would I call it a broth. I would be willing to bet the person responsible for the food that comes out of this place has not actually tasted the food in many years. When food comes out tasting Nothing like it's description... ....then the train has surely left the track. Oh, and let's not forget all the churning going on while it's being digested........to say the very least.....That's NOT supposed to be happening. When the best part of your chinese take out is the pre-packaged chocolate fortune cookies.......then it's time to cross that take out joint off your list for ever. P.S When we placed this order from the car on the way home we were asked how long before we would arrived...we said... 'about' ....ten minutes.......when we arrived 14 minutes later (4 minutes late) we were confronted about being late. Really? We just returned from lunch at Szechuan King in Saugerties. We ate in the restaurant side of the business (the other side is take-out, with a few small tables.) Everything - from the décor and service to the food - was excellent. Our server (Michael) was welcoming, friendly and efficient. He greeted us with a pot of hot tea, and fried noodles with sweet and sour sauce. Egg rolls were crispy, delicate and piping hot. The steamed pork dumplings were out of this world. You could taste the ginger and garlic in the succulent pork filling. They were accompanied by a perfect salty and tangy dipping sauce. Chicken teriyaki was skewered chicken with a flavor reminiscent of tandoor - just superb. Mongolian beef was prepared with scallions, onions and a dark, rich, spicy sauce. The restaurant is spotlessly clean, with a lovely traditional décor. We're looking forward to returning for dinner very soon. read more
