I usually like to list and review each dish individually, but this visit to Golden Palace was a little different. I attended a lunch party here, and someone else handled all the ordering for the group, so I didn't catch the names of many of the dishes. I was told that most of the staff are Cantonese-speaking and speak limited English, which probably explains why I wasn't able to identify everything that came to the table. That said, I did recognize a few Cantonese restaurant staples, including Yang Chow fried rice, Peking-style pork chops, stir-fried assorted vegetables, and salt-and-pepper squid. Everything we tried was tasty, and the portions were generous. The prices were reasonable as well, making it a good option for group dining. The dish that really stood out to me, though, was something I had never tried before. It arrived as an appetizer and looked like a simple deep-fried item, but when I bit into it, the inside was soft, creamy, and slightly sweet. I couldn't figure out what it was until I asked a teammate, who told me it was fried milk! Honestly, I would have considered it more of a dessert than an appetizer. It was absolutely delicious and surprisingly addictive. I kept reaching for another piece and couldn't stop thinking about it afterward. Overall, I enjoyed everything we ordered, but that fried milk completely stole the show for me. This place has a weird vibe to it, it's very dated and stinks a bit. Clearly they don't care to make the place more inviting or cleaner. We came here because a friend said it's easy to park (it is) and it's less crowded than most Chinese restaurants in the center of Flushing. The food was okay, and the prices are low. This is a nice restaurant not too far from the US Open - Billy Jean King/Arthur Ashe stadium. We went on a Friday night, after 8 and the place looking deserted. There were a couple of tables in the back of the place and a few of the private rooms. We sat in the corner. They have a paper menu you can order from. It has lunch specials and dinner items. Currently they have specials going on. You see it flashed across their big screen in the front. It you cannot read Chinese, ask for a translation. If you purchase 2 items at full price you can get 2 dishes as a special price. Lobster being one of them! Some waiters are more friendly than others. The seafood was delicious and fresh!! We went for a Saturday lunch for CNY. It's a little off the main area of Flushing (about a 15 min walk from main street) or there's parking but can get crowded. We went early and there was no one else in the restaurant. Food came quick after we ordered so definitely a plus for quick service. It's decent food, nothing too special. We recently had family dinner there on A Friday nite. They accepted reservation and provide private lot which are mainly the reasons we chose this location. As it turned out, food and service are very good as well. Some of the seafood dishes are on promotional discounts. The geoduck is as cheap as the ones we had in Hong Kong recently ( 29.99/pound). There is also a parking lot, which is a huge plus when you are driving to Flushing. The food was OK. We ordered a multi course dinner. We ordered peking duck, crispy chicken, fresh live fish, crispy fried tofu with snap peas and conch, seafood soup, abalone with bok choy, pea shots with mushrooms, fried rice, E-mein noodles, and braised short rib. Needed to go to my storage and this place was next to my storage. This Chinese restaurant didn't have dim sum the two times I went with my parents. We went there around 12pm to 2pm and they were not serving any dim sum. So we just ordered dishes of noodles and the service was fast. Before the noodles arrived, they served free egg drop soup and it was not warm at all. It was just room temperature and a free appetizer. Once the noodles arrived, I noticed that it wasn't as much on the plate as I expected. They offered very little noodles and it's not as generous as much to the brim although it tasted really good. The stringy noodles came with some mushrooms and greens and it was very chewy and tender. Seasoning was just right, not too salty or drenched in sauce. We also ordered a fried fish and tofu bowl and it was pretty salty due to the fish. Lots of sauce and not really my thing. This dish was mostly for my parents. This restaurant serves the typical Chinese cuisine. Inside was much smaller than I expected but it's great that there is a parking lot right beside it since parking in Flushing can be hard to get. I didn't like how people smoked super close to the entrance which kind of traveled inside. Luckily, my family booked a private room since we had a banquet style meal for a celebration. As for the food, it was prepared pretty well. I found everything to be delicious, not overly salty and presented nicely. Since I had a banquet style dinner, it covered a variety of dishes. There were soups, chicken, appetizer platters, dungeoness crab, lobster with potato and cheese, lamb chops, fish, and fried rice. After the meal, they also gave us red bean soup and fruits, classic to typical Chinese restaurant dinners. This is not in my part of the town. My friend invited me to hang out on a Saturday, and they chose this restaurant for dinner before we headed to Karaoke. I was surprised that we would have to wait for our table even after we made a dinner reservation and the fact that the restaurant only has a 2.5 stars overall rating on Yelp. The first challenge we encountered was that it was not easy to find a parking spot that night. After waiting for more than 30 minutes, we finally got seated at a table by the kitchen doors. We ordered from a preset menu which came with multiple courses. The tables are a little bit cramped, so this is a place for gatherings and celebrations, but not an intimate dinner, as it may feel a little bit unpleasant at time with people getting close to you when they are walking behind you or next to where you sit. There was a big family celebrating a baby's 100 days old birthday at the back of the dining hall that night, they seemed to be having a great time. The servers were very efficient, after we mentioned to them that we're in a rush, they tried to bring out the dishes as quickly as possible. We did not have issues with the service as some of the other Yelpers. Our preset menu came with a cold platter with a variety of meats and jelly fish, a seafood broth, steamed fish with ginger and scallions, coated scallops over a bed of vegetables, steamed chicken with soy sauce, crab with glutinous rice, fried rice, stir fried noodles, stir fried vegetables with mushrooms, red bean soup and assorted fruits. I am probably missing some dishes. The crab with glutinous rice was surprisingly good. It was flavorful and it came with a whole crab with shell. I did not like the way how they prepared the scallops dish, I felt like it was a waste of the scallops, all I could bite into was some batter of some sort. The steamed chicken with soy sauce was good, the meat had a smooth texture and it's falling off the bones. Overall, I think the Cantonese food here is okay. It reminds me of the places in Hong Kong where these traditional dishes are served. 1.5 stars. I placed a catering order at 4 pm and went to pick it up at 7 pm. At 8 pm the order was still not ready! I waited over one hour at the restaurant to pick up 8 dishes, that I specifically requested to pick up at a certain time- 7pm. Not only did they forget my order, the restaurant forgot to cook one of the dishes that was supposed to come out with the rest of the catering order which resulted in waiting even longer. The other Yelpers are right. This restaurant uses way too much oil in their dishes especially with the fish, duck, and sea conch. The cucumber salad was not fresh because it was sour and wasn't cold when I got my order. The lobster sticky rice dish was an additional $15 to replace noodles but I did not receive sticky rice, it was regular rice mixed with wild rice so I was ripped off. The chicken was good but it is not crispy as the dish is called 'crispy skin chicken' and did not come with a dipping sauce or any soy sauce. I had a catering order, but the cashier did not ask if I needed any utensils or sauces. The dishes come as a set but no rice was accompanied with the food. There are so many better restaurants with superior menus and pricing in Flushing. Based on other Yelp reviews, I was thinking to myself, am I in the same place? So I came here with lowered expectations given the lackluster reviews and photos. To my surprise, they may have changed things up a bit, especially in the management and kitchen dept. My family was hosting a banquet style meal for some relatives and we reserved a Private room for 17 people. Upon walking through the place on Sat. night at 6PM, I saw that the wait staff was gearing up for the soon to be packed house dinner crowds. Note: There is a private parking lot just out front. About 6 or so private rooms that I counted. Could be more, wasn't sure given it got really crowded by 7pm and I couldn't see past the people. Each room does have it's own theme (decor and colors) and most are outfitted with a TV, Karaoke machine and speakers. The best part, they are outfitted with electronic lazy Susan servers...with a remote control, you can control when the server table should spin or not spin at all. You can even control the speed - that proved helpful when I was trying to take photos or to serve my guests. Super cool idea. The food was a banquet style menu so many of the dishes we sampled were not your usual dinner fare, this menu was on the more pricier side of the spectrum. Between the Dungeoness Crab weighing in close to ten pounds and it's priced per pound...you can figure the math. The other dishes of seafood were also not cheap given we had to make them XL in portion to ensure we fed all. The best plate was the raw platter - talking about oysters with cocktail sauce, salmon sashimi and geoduck by the pound as well. Again, that platter was very pricey - but it's by weight so you really can't argue. The best dish we had besides the jumbo tiger prawns was the crab of course, was the lobster with sticky rice. The rice was a combination of crispy rice noodles, sticky rice, wild rice, and had your standard fried rice ingredients like egg and scallions. Super delicious and great texture. Other notable dishes: The half baked chicken - tender meat and moist. Served room temperature to cold. The seabass - twin fishes...too much oil for me but the flavor was on point. Soy, scallions and ginger. Simple and not "fishy". The soup - made with Morel mushrooms and chicken stock. Refreshing and also very homemade tasting. I enjoyed it a lot. The sauteed pea shoots - fresh and cooked with lots of garlic. The steak cubes and mushrooms - great sharing portion and the steak was marinated nicely - fork tender and palatable. Because we had a banquet style meal, we were given a bunch of "free" appetizers to start. Think smoked fish, duck, pickled radish, seaweed salad, peanuts, etc. And our dinner followed with three kinds of dessert - fried dough (man tau with condensed milk - yum), a large fruit platter, and the house dessert, tong sui (red bean paste soup with green beans and tapioca). Everything was good ... not too sweet either so I enjoyed it more. Our room had one dedicated server and she as fantastic. Always communicated with us what was to be served and how to serve it. She even asked us to verify our dishes to ensure we still wanted all - she noticed we slowed down in eating so wanted to ensure we were ok with everything. Excellent service when serving the fried rice (ensure each person got lobster), the soup (a few ingredients per bowl), and did a one time pass per person with the seafood platter to ensure every person would get at least one serving. We had a little trouble operating the Karaoke machine so she hooked us up and got us going. Great evening overall. She was well rewarded as well - don't forget to tip when you get great service. First impression before entering was that this place has so much potential. It's situated in Flushing at an area that can barely be called the outskirts. It's three or four blocks from the bustling Skyview Shopping Mall and provides free parking. For Flushing, this a big deal, as there is barely any parking anywhere on busier days, not to mention that they are mostly paid parking spots. If you get anything from this review, it's that you need to request less oil in your dishes. Can't stress this point enough. It isn't every day where I go to a Chinese restaurant and meet a steamed fish that tastes unhealthy from how much oil is in the dish. The seafood wasn't fresh. The Steamed Flounder(清蒸龙利) was rubbery and didn't taste like anything besides soy sauce, really. The Razor Clams with Black Bean sauce(鼓汁刀蚬) was accompanied by bean sprouts and veg that were cooked well, but the razor clams lacked the pleasant natural seafood flavour that you usually taste when they are fresh. Lotus Root Pork Belly with Fermented Red Bean Curd(南乳藕片五花肉) had nicely crunchy lotus root, but the rest of the dish just seemed like fat. A lot of the pork belly was straight fat- no lean meat to be seen. Beef with Fresh Mushrooms(铁板鲜菌牛肉) was drenched in butter. I thought I was eating French cuisine. Butter gives it a distinct flavour and does make things taste better, but it was a bit shocking how much was added. The mushrooms and beef were actually really fresh and well cooked. The earthiness of the fungus was incredibly fragrant. Easily the best dish that I ordered. The biggest problem for all of the dishes was that as the meal progressed, the oils and butter congeal and the food starts to seem increasingly greasy. We've been enjoying their food since the days they were on Roosevelt ave. Their House special poached chicken is still the best in Flushing and serves as the centerpiece for a good Chinese meal. The Cantonese style entrees are all excellent Then there's the live seafood which they are known for. The large restaurant is spacious, immaculate and has friendly staff. While they are not all proficient in English, Joey, their manager is a great go to for those in need of assistance. I bring family and friends of all ages as well as some who have had a lifetime of dining in NYC's Chinatown. So I took the initiative and went to the front to grab the menu for us. Note that it wasn't all that crowded. She said we were next up, pointing to a nearby table who were wrapping up their dinner. A group of middle aged luxury brand overseas asians roll in and start to talk to the waiters and hostess. For those all concerned with the quality of service, you have to get used around them and know them personally. One of my great-aunts took me here for dinner and it was comparable to our usual Cantonese place in Forest Hills. Besides the complimentary peanuts, we also got complimentary chicken feet and pickled vegetables. Even though the fish maw and seafood soup are sometimes inconsistent with quality, it was still good both times. Both the chives and seafood dish and the Chinese broccoli and bacon dish were tasty. The steak kew with asparagus was also tasty, with tender steak. But the garlic steamed chicken is a must have, juicy meat and stringy skin served with some ginger and garlic sauce. The tofu is good when putting it in fish paste. milk balls mayo shrimp was also good, as its portion and price were good. The salt and pepper pork chops and fried squid are great, crispy morsels of meat/seafood to enjoy. Plus, the ginger and scallion lobster, along with the fried flounder were cooked perfectly. To end our meal, the house special fried rice was good, as well as the beef chow mein (crispy noodles) were good, despite the latter having the noodles undercooked. This was such a good restaurant. I enjoyed being here with quality service and food was prepared fast. The fried rice there was actually fried and gave a wonderful crispness to it which me and my family enjoyed. The best authentic Chinese Cantonese food anywhere in New York. I've been to dozens of similar restaurants around. None can compare to this restaurant. The waiter that works on Sunday morning and nightly has awesome personalities and will provide you the service that you can rarely get from Chinese restaurants. A place with parking We saw this restaurant while at Home Depot and decided to give it a shot. With no reservation but come early in the evening, six of us were seated in the main room. There were several parties going on in the private rooms. We ordered their signature chicken and some other typical Cantonese dishes. The results are mixed on the quality of food, the services is barely passable. Other than the free parking, there may not be enough to bring us back. read more
