The food was as good as any other location but the service slipped after I got my food.
Normally, I'm accustomed to Gold Star and Skyline practically bending over backward for customers. That goes with the high price of the chili. Maybe, since the burrito bowl I ordered wasn't quite as profitable as a bowl of chili, I didn't get great service.
I was looking around Middletown and saw a few options for lunch and I decided to stop for another burrito bowl. I have to be careful about this, don't I? At least, they're better for you than eating the chili by itself.
Things seemed tidy, as I entered the store and I sat down at the counter. It wasn't as tidy, as I'd thought, but it wasn't bad, either. Surprisingly, there were no menus at the counter and only one rack to hold them that I recall. One of the waitresses asked me what I wanted to drink and asked if I needed to see a menu.
She was filling my drink and asking me if I knew what I wanted. I really didn't feel like yelling across the room, as I never seem to be loud enough, unless I'm too loud, so I didn't think that would work well. When she returned, I ordered a Tex-Mex Burrito Bowl and the Firehouse spices and black olives. I was surprised that she asked about the extras, in contrast to the store on Oxford State Road.
It didn't take long for the food to be prepared. Now, you know how the waitress shows up when you have food in your mouth to ask you how everything is? It didn't happen until I was practically finished with both the burrito bowl and the drink. She seemed to be on an errand for 15 minutes and she didn't interrupt herself with work to handle it. No one handed me the bill and no one asked me if I wanted a refill of my drink. I took away 50 cents from the tip when she didn't return.
The man who was preparing food said that the ticket was over at the register and someone else took my money. Am I expecting too much? I think not. We called it team work where I've worked. You help the customer, even if they weren't assigned to you directly. You never leave them wondering or angry. The food was good, so I wasn't angry but how many times are people left wondering "where is that waitress? i need to go." Too many times, I think. read more
