Went to get the prime rib at the Sierra Cafe. It was the worst prime rib my girlfriend and I ever had. We ordered medium rare - it came out medium. It was very dry and tough. I think it had been sitting around for far too long. The green beans that came with it were also marginal quality. It was cheap however, $10.99 for the prime rib - and it was large. What ever happened to the well ran casino they used to have? Since there is a new marketing manager everything is array. Friday night, customer appreciation night there was a free dinner for card holders. No announcement, no ticket to get a free dinner. If it wasn't for other customers we would have missed out on the dinner. However the meal was good. Also we could have had 2 guests. What a joke. Not the same place to have fun as it was when they had a marketing manager like the ones in the past. Gold Ranch needs to reevaluate their operations and customer relations with their marketing department. I just stopped to use the restroom and get some fries actually. The restrooms are VERY small and cramped. There were 5 women in there w/2 stalls trying to juggle around ea other to wash hands and open doors to get in and out it was madness, VERY POOR setup!! I was up in Reno mid December 2007. I was heading back with a few friends and we were running late to get back to So. San Francisco. After getting lost in the turn abouts at Boom Town for 20min driving in circles, we find out that the Boom Town cafe was closed. So we headed on our trip back to the city with no breakfast in our belly. Low and behold a sign comes up which says "Last Chance!" For food, gas, casino, bathrooms etc. We decide not head to the Sierra Cafe instead of the Jack in the box. And I was not disappointed one bit by this choice. We where sat down quickly and service came quickly as well. The menu is more like a Denny's / Lyon kind of a deal. We had the fried zucchini for appetizer. These things where huge and looked very fresh. Not mushy at all crisp veggie, and crunchy coating. Perfect with the non-watered down ranch dressing. I had the chicken fried steak / country gravy with some runny eggs, hash browns and sour dough toast. This late breakfast was off the hook. Eggs perfectly runny, chicken fried steak was not oily or greasy. Perfect amount of country gravy on top. My friend had chicken wings with ranch dressing which I had a few of and let me tell you its not like Denny's / Lyons which only gives you 6 skinny wings. These where plump juicy wings and an even dozen at best. Service was friendly and very attentive. So attentive that at one point I was snuck up upon by one of the waiters, and asked if I wanted another refill. Well I was not expecting this and she scared the crap out of me. We laughed about it, she apologized and we had a great lunch. They are open from 6am-10pm. So if you find yourself hungry and your way back to the Bay Area, make sure you stop by here. read more

Hadn't eaten here in years, so thought we'd give it a try. Bad idea. First, you need a players card for the breakfast, and your server will not be so kind as to assist with it, just throws out the info hoping you will just order something else on the menu. I got out of the booth, went to the cage and got the requisite card. Ordered the special with sausage, got the special with bacon. Cafeteria quality breakfast. Hubby ordered the prime rib sandwich. It was made with roast beef lunchmeat, came on a smashed bun and had a huge amount of partially cooked onions on it. Not good and it was around 8 bucks! Coffee tastes good if you can get it. Gave up on refills after having to flag down busboy, which was a good thing since he carried the pots by the pouring spouts, not the handles. Many dirty tables. Dusty. Flies present. Our server never checked back except to bring the bill. Think about it, if this is the level of care in the front of the house, imagine how sloppy-or worse- the kitchen is. Best to keep driving. In either direction, you will find much better food and service at a number of decent restaurants off 80 within about a half hour's drive. read more

My wife and I often stay at the Gold Ranch RV Resort adjacent to the Gold Ranch Casino. The Sierra Cafe is located inside the casino. We find the food to be good. We were amazed at the $2.22 breakfast special expecting "low grade" food or service but got good, tasty food and good service too. They also have a half off special from 2 - 5pm, M-F if you are 55 and older. Tuesday is half off until 9pm if you have a players card. It's not just food at a bargain but tastes good too. read more

The restaurant proves the addage that you get what you pay for I guess. I saw the ad for the all-you-can-eat spaghetti deal listed in the Reno Best Bets Newspaper and decided to try it. I was betting that the recipe would be the same or similar to the very good bottomless pasta dish that is served at the Sand's Regency in Reno, which owns Gold Ranch (same parent company). I was very wrong. This plate made a can of cold Spaghettios look gourmet by comparison. Yeah, it was that bad and mostly inedible. Pasta was watery and the meatballs were not thoroughly cooked and were cold on the inside. The waitresses were trying their best, so can't blame them. Older, grandmotherly cashier lady only charged me like 2 bucks for the meal after the player's club discount. Can't say I'd ever try it again. Better to go to the Jack-n-the Box a couple of steps away or just buy potato chips in the mini-mart. read more

Don't know what to say about this place (which appears to be in Nevada, but isn't.) I guess the state line runs through the Gold Ranch RV park and Casino. We come here for all our 'lottery needs'. Stopped in late night for a potty break. A much needed break. There are zero rest stops once you get into the mountains. Pulled into GR and was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness of the casino and bathroom. As with any casino now a days, the smoking section is large. Really really good restaurant inside the Casino. They have delicious specials daily and in addition to the $2.22 pancake breakfast special, they also had a chicken and rib special. I was impressed! So happy I tried this! Stopped with the kids on our way back to Truckee. Quick, good food. Everything we expected. Clean & well-maintained. Nice asphalt pads with plenty of space for an RV and an extra vehicle. Green grassy area next to each site. Pretty views of nearby mountains & even a little walking/hiking trail. We got an awesome "staycation" deal...$99 for 3 nights, plus $20 good credit at their Sierra Cafe, $20 propane credit and $20 free play in the casino. Nothing fancy, but perfect for our long weekend stay. About a 15 minute drive outside of Reno, it was very convenient to get to the casinos in town, etc. We will definitely stay here again. We had dinner and a couple breakfasts at the Sierra Cafe on site. Inexpensive and pretty good food. The wait staff was helpful and friendly. The menu is typical, kind of like a Denny's or Coco's, but not too greasy. I debated between giving this 2 or 3 stars. I would have given 2 1/2 stars since I thought it was somewhere between a-ok and meh I have had better. I went ahead and gave it 3 stars because it's one of those places were we would not make the comment "I feel like breakfast lets drive to Gold Ranch to eat" But we would stop and eat if we were out that way and hungry. I just ate at gold ranch. I got the French dip, and my husband got a hamburger pattie with eggs. My sandwich tasted like it turned. I told the waitress and she asked if I wanted something else. I used to live near this place in Verdi. I would stop to get gas always because of the price and convenience. The Cafe Has unparalleled food for a gas stop looking diner. Don't let the looks fool you. Try their Clam Chowder on Friday some of the best I've had- and Let me tell you I've had it all the up and down the California coast. Thick chunky and homemade. The chicken wings are a deep fried treat I never would have expected. They often have specials like rack of lamb and other various high-end restaurant deals. The pizza is also great quality and well priced. If you're headed over the pass and have time skip the Jack-in-the Box try the Cafe. You won't regret it. I think they also have a special where law enforcement get a discount. I often see California Highway Patrol there. :) They can't resist a good meal. The Casino is okay. Aside from winning and loosing I think the air filtration system needs a bit of improving. When I walk through the back to the front just to pick up Cafe food I walk out I smell like tobacco smoke. 5 minutes and my hair is smelling like smoke. That can't be healthy. If this doesn't phase you try the smoke shop down the street. From what I hear great prices on all things tobacco especially compared to CA. Overall- Terribles formerly (Gold Ranch Casino) is a great place to stop fuel up and get supplies. Don't forget to grab some extras for snowy days over the pass and windshield wiper fluid for those wet/sandy windshield days. There are RV parks and there are RV resorts and I'd say Gold Ranch is closer to a resort. There is lots of grass in an around each site. There is a hiking trail which starts in the back. There is a pool, restaurant and machines only casino. The bar has ice cold draft beer which is so wonderful on a hot day. We used the laundry room and there are ample washers and dryers. We stayed 2 nights but plan to return for a week. read more

I give the restaurant 5 stars. The food is wonderful and they offer half price discount after 2 if you are a senior. We love the creamed soups in the bread bowls and the fish and chips and the French dip are wonderful. We eat here often. Since new ownership the gambling is no fun anymore. You NEVER win. It used to be our favorite place to play slots, not anymore. I decided to give up on that. So to be fair, the restaurant gets 5 stars, the staff is great the food is great and the prices are superb. The casino gets 1 star at best. They seem to be spending all the money on scooters and similar items which will benefit a few people instead of putting the money into letting the players win. Not smart in my book. I want to go in to have some fun and if I lose every time it is not fun. Now we just go in to eat. Went out to GR for breakfast this morning. There is a marked difference from the last time we were there for a meal. First off, good for them, there was a waiting list. OK, not a problem. We went to the bar for a Bloody Mary while we waited...mistake. We sat at the bar and watched the bartender chat with folks opposite us. Then he bussed dishes off the bar, then more chat, then more bussing. Then he came over to our side of the bar and began a conversation with a woman at the end of the bar. After sitting there 15 minutes he came over and asked what we wanted. Told him we were out of the mood since we'd been sitting there 15 minutes. He said he had to talk to his lady friend 'about her husband, sorry'. Went into the restaurant and waited longer this time than ever before for service. The coffee shop at Gold Ranch is a "must stop" for breakfast. It all starts with the most friendly wait staff of Robin, Nicole and Evie who has worked there for longer than I can remember. Breakfast is outstanding and second to none as far as I'm concerned. Also have had dinner there but it's nothing to rave about. Lunch is also very good but nothing compares with breakfast. Have breakfast there once a week from August to February (football season) and on other occasions when traveling from Reno to home. read more
