I heard about Gold and Gifted from one of my coworkers, and ended up taking my boyfriend here after he's been trying to find his go-to place for haircuts in the Berkeley area. CJ (who sadly does not work here anymore) took us in without an appointment. He knew exactly what we were looking for and gave the look his own spin. He was very kind and treated us as if we were old friends. We have been coming here ever since (though sadly we do not get cuts from CJ anymore), everyone here is super nice and are willing to accommodate our needs even on short notices. We waited two hours to get a cut, all the while music blaring in our ears and smoke being blown in our faces, then ended up leaving because we apparently weren't the right type of person to be worthy of their shitty services. Every single guy who came AFTER us was taken BEFORE us. I was greeted by Ronnie who asked me how I wanted my hair cut and he didn't finish cutting until I was completely satisfied with the final cut. This is my go-to spot for a cut now. I used to frequent Massive in Old Oakland when I lived in Oakland Chinatown. When I moved to South Berkeley, I was in desperate need of a new joint. This place is incredible. You gotta make a reservation in advance though, as I have never been able to sit down for a cut as a walk-in. The price is the cheapest I've experienced in the Bay too. So impressed! I scheduled an appointment with Ronnie, very fast response, he fit me in with his tight schedule no problem. I brought my 4 year old son in to be cut, he has only been cut about 4 times, he is still sensitive to the blades. Ronnie was so fast and gentle it was amazing seeing him work. I stopped by my friends shop Gold and Gifted recently and was really impressed to see all of the hard work and dedication he put into his dream. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating and one of his sales associates helped me pick out a top for this niners party I was attending the next day. The whole concept of having a barbershop that you can shop at is brilliant and unique. This shop has about 4-5 barbers working. I always book my appointment with Sutra because he's cool with my family. Super talented, always consistent and never disapoints. Everyone seems to be busy all the time so make sure to book your appointment at least a week in advance. They rarely take walk-ins only because they're always booked. read more

Never going back here again! Went to try a new place since all the other reviews on yelp seemed promising. Made an appointment for 6:30pm with Chris on Wednesday 8/27/14. Got there at 6:15 after waiting for about 20mins another barber named Naz took me since I guess Chris was busy with another client. (Then why was i told 6:30 with Chris was ok?) I was looking forward to getting a cut from Chris since he seemed to know what he was doing according to the yelp reviews. Anyways i went ahead with Naz and getting a cut from this guy was the worst cut i have ever gotten in my life! I told him i was going to a wedding and needed to look fresh and he said yeah no problem. This guy pretty much kept slamming the machine in my head and scratching my scalp with the comb. After me giving him a few dirty looks he askes "is there a problem" and i said "why are you in such a hurry, whats the rush?" He says "I'm a fast cutter and have been doing this for years." Have you been really hitting people in the head for years and no one has said anything? The other two barbers seemed to be taking their sweet time and the results showed on their clients. Anyways, a few minutes into the cut he leaves the shop for 10 minutes without even saying he will be right back or anything and when he came back he didnt have the decency to even apologize or say anything and continued the cut as if nothing even happened! Wft!? After getting my head butcherd by him and scratching my scalp with the machine and comb i ended up with pretty much a bald head on the sides when i asked for a normal fade. Maybe if he paid less attention to the tv and talking to his friends and answering his phone and taking his time with his clients he might earn a better reputation. All in all im never coming back! If you are a classy guy and are a sucker for service look else where this isnt the place to be. I wonder how this place has 5 stars i was expecting a lot more out of this place than what was delivered. Eff this place. When I approached 5 minutes early for my appt., the reaction of the "barber" who asked if he could help me was unsettling as I told him I had an appt. He looked as though to think, "oh...whoops.." as he literally sat someone in his chair to begin. I figured I'd hang out and see how long it'd be until the next chair was available. I waited 20 minutes....with a couple of others waiting who had walked in before me. When they chose to sit the person before me, who was a walk in, I got up and left. This is my go-to barber shop when it comes to my son's haircut needs. Both my boyfriend and my son has been going to Sutra for years, even before they opened Gold & Gifted, and we will continue to be loyal customers. No matter what we decide to change it up to, whether its a gentlemen's cut/comb over, low fade, high fade, etc, Sutra always has my son walking out of there fresh and sharp. The barbers here are professional and they know what they're doing. They're also very accommodating. When I let important dates slip my mind, such as picture day and other special events, they're still able to take my son for a last minute appointment. If Sutra is not available my next go-to person is Wowie, but all the barbers do a great job here. I would highly recommend them. Yes sometimes there is a wait but that's because they give each and every person the same superb service and man the attention to detail is crazy precise. Give them a shot if you haven't already. 5 gold stars for this place. I walked in on a Saturday for a nape cut. My one year old was with me ,we just finished playing at the rec room. Everyone was very hospitable and polite. The entire shop was well ventilated and clean. I didn't wait long as a walk in. My husband held our daughter while Ronnie took care of my hair. Ronnie was able to transform the back of my head to clean cut and give me a quick and painless design aaaannd make my daughter smile. By far one of the worst Barber shops I've been to. I've been there a few times to get cut and each time these people find a way to annoy me. One of the guys that cut my hair literally cut my forehead open and made me scar for two weeks and wasn't apologetic about it; he did not even offer a discount for disfiguring me. Used to be a big fan of this place; it has a nice, chill vibe. One of the few places in the area that sells Sauvecito products which I love. However, my recent experience with them had been very dissatisfying. Was made to wait more than 30 minutes for an appointment that I had booked over the phone. The guy at the counter was just standing there vaping away and made no effort to inform me how much longer I'd have to wait for my turn. No acknowledgement, whatsoever. When my turn was up, the barber butchered my beard! He rushed through the appointment and by the time he was done, I had a completely asymmetrical beard and a mustache that made me look like a clown. I walked into this place, and was greeted immediately. The staff is very friendly. The barber shop was very nice, spacious, and welcoming creating a wonderful ambiance. Ronnie the barber cut my hair, and he did a great job. He took his time, and asked me questions about my hair along the way. I have no complaints about my haircut. Judging by the conversation we had he's definitely a humble person, and employee. The entire staff seem very humble, and down to earth. Those are signs of a great business. I keep going to him because my haircuts always turn out great. Have to say he's been one of the best and most consistent barbers I've ever had. Gold and Gifted is definitely not a place I would have chosen to go to for a haircut for my 5year old son. However a friend recommended I check it out. Just a little background my 5year old son hates getting his haircut and I avoid taking him for as long as I can. A parent can only allow a fro to grow for sooo long. Anyways we showed up, right off the bat-great customer service/greeting. Ronnie was our barber and he was very courteous. Right away as my son sat down and saw the clippers he started to freak out, but Ronnie was good in easing him and calming him down. He let him feel the vibration of the clippers so he wouldn't be scared and he even ran it up his arm to show him there was no pain. He was very gentle and took his time even though there were other customers waiting. The customer service representative even changed the t.v. channel to Disney channel to accommodate my son's request to make him more comfortable. This place is definitely a man's cave for father's and their sons. However Mommies like me can also take our son's and still feel welcomed. My son left the place with a smile and it was the first time we were able to get a hair cut for him without him screaming bloody murder. He even said he wanted to go back there again for another haircut. So I gave them 5stars because other places we've gone to that were very kid friendly with toys and dvds and kids style interior designing- it was not enough for my son to want to go back.
