My husband goes here and loves it; there was only 1 iffy haircut in the past 3 years. He's not loyal to any barber, but does say he prefers the male ones. We recently took our 2.5 year old for his first cut and Ronnie was the best. He worked with our squirmy toddler with quick precision. He was patient and so sweet. My son had beautiful long curly locks and we said we want it out of his face, trimmed and shaped but still have those curls and that's exactly what we got. This place is popular since they do a great job and it's approximately $25-$30 for adults and $15-20 for kids. I'd call and confirm pricing if that's an issue. Scheduling can be tough, but my husband says he can usually get an appointment within a few days of calling, but you do have to be flexible with times. The place was getting new floors when I was there, so a little under construction, but they were bumping beats and each station had a mini flatscreen playing ESPN. I had a few images as examples, and the first two barbers I spoke to there cringed at them ha ha! Sutra, the head barber in the shop, was not only up for the challenge but exceeded my expectations. He's pretty busy, so he doesn't do walk-ins. If you're like me, you don't mind waiting to get what you want. I took my 20 month old here not really knowing much about barbers (hello female) but I got a nice vibe and once I booked, it was for the next day and even with them being packed they still make room for you and take there time. My son really gave the guy an ear full of crying but that didn't stop him from taking his time. Full disclosure: I'm pretty picky about how I want my hair cut. But when I find a barber I like then I keep coming back. Had the same barber back home for almost a decade! Saw the reviews and it was pretty close by so I scheduled an appointment. The barber that cut my hair didn't seem like a full-time barber, perhaps she was just a fill in or part-timer to help out when they don't have enough barbers. She was friendly, but the haircut just wasn't what I asked for. Plus I noticed there were a few spots not blended cleanly at all when I got home. I try to be as specific as possible with what I want (shadow medium-high fade, tapered, etc.), and I even show pictures. Now I don't show them pictures of other dude's haircuts because I know not every guy's head and facial structures are the same, so I always show pictures of ME with the exact fade and cut I want. It's like giving the answers to the test. They just gotta copy it! Seriously just make me look like me in the pictures. I was disappointed overall, but they avoid a 1-star rating because the atmosphere is chill and the barber was friendly. Plus maybe I didn't get a regular barber so maybe their normal rotation is better. It's not the worse haircut I've ever had, but I think I also do a much better job being specific with what I want and giving barbers the "answers to the test" than I used to back then. read more

These guys are chill, friendly, funny, and overall welcoming. I talked to the owner for a bit and he was open and curious how my first impression was. I talked to Naz, Filipino dude if I remember correctly, and he was a chill cat. He hooked it up and gave me a real clean cut effortlessly. I really really hate writing a negative review but I don't feel like I have a choice. This place went to my go to barbor shop to a place I only go to in emergencies. My schedule only allows my to get cut on Sundays and this is one of the few places I found that is open on sundays. Ronnie used to work sundays and he was great but there's been a different guy for some time now. This guy is slow, will randomly leave with no notice and he straight up told me "I hate doing that" when I asked him to trim the inside of my beard. He's cut my hair several times and a few times he's butchered my hair line. Right now I'm sitting on the bench in the shop and he decided it was a good idea to just start cleaning while there 3 people waiting. I've been here for over an hour with no communication as to when I'll be up. Looks like hes leaving now, someone just got pissed and left, I think I'll follow suit. DO NOT GO ON SUNDAYS. read more

Today I've been given an appointment to come around 4:30 and when I called in to confirm my appointment I've been advised that he can no longer take me today. Apparently there are some skilled barbers at this salon. Definitely not mine. My haircut was done by an amateur who was unprepared and probably high, judging by the glazed look and inability to find the words to complete sentences. Despite that it was 2pm in the middle of the day when I was the only customer, he was totally unprepared and bizarrely slow ... it took him like 7 minutes to find the right clippers. And then he butchered my hair. I asked for a modest, well-rounded haircut and showed him a picture of what I wanted. Here's what he did: He used the #3 clippers all the way up the sides and back of my head - all the way - with no fading whatsoever, and left the top pretty long. That's an odd way to cut someone's hair who didn't ask for that. He had zero skill with scissors and didn't know how to texturize. I was relieved when my hair grew out a bit over the course of am month to get it fixed by an experienced stylist who listened to what I wanted and basically confirmed that his cut was just really inexpert, uneven, and she claimed there was no way he used number 3 clippers because the length of my hair on the sides and back was barely approaching a level 3 length one month afterwards. If you choose to go to this shop, I hope yo want a buzz cut, or you get the barber who is capable of using scissors. I like a laid-back place with laid-back people, but I don't like totally unprepared amateurs with poor communication and bad skills. Sean read more

I brought my 12 yo bi-racial (blk/whi) son here to get a more stylized, fade hair cut. A school mate of his, also bi-racial had just gotten his 1st hair cut from the dudes at Gold & Gifted and it looked so fly & fresh we thought we'd give them a try too! Thing is his school mate couldn't remember the name of his barber, so we weren't exactly sure who to ask for when we got there. No matter though bc we were beyond thrilled at the results for both Mother & son!! Yep ladies you can roll in here too for your natural hair cut. When we walked in CJ, immediately greeted us and said he could take us as soon as he finished with his current client. We didn't wait long at all. This is a typical men's barber shop with a multi-racial make up. They had the basketball game rolling and hip-hop banging and there's a vapor counter and other retail. Vapors/smoking is not my thing and not something I especially want my kid around, but I have him schooled on that and realize it comes with the territory, especially if you need your hair done right, which we do! Back to the service: When it was my kid's turn, he walked up to CJ discussed with him what he wanted, showed him a pic, negotiated the cost and CJ went to work. CJ took great care with the cutting down process even knowing 1st how to correctly pick out my son's hair gently. It's a rare thing to know how to cut curly half-Black hair. Everything was even and laid. CJ gave him a great line up and even lined out my son's little widow's peak, which I thought was funny that my son was so adamant @ removing. I was so impressed with the cut that I half jokingly said that I should let CJ cut my hair. I go to a great salon where I get my hair bleached and cut in the regular. But I was feeling a little adventurous in the cut thin after seeing the boys' hair cuts. I didn't have the time right then, but was thinking I'd come back later. And so I did! The next day on Thursday afternoon, I stopped by the shop. I didn't see CJ, but I did see Riyad. Riyad quickly asked me what I'd like, I told him I wanted my sides and back tapered, Riyad was game and said he'd take me after his client. A few minutes later, I was in Riyad's chair and he went to work. I'm a singer and songwriter with a show coming up, but I felt total comfortable that I would get a great feminine cut for my natural hair. And I did! So my son and I now have new barbers for our Mother & son hair do's. I will still go to my regular stylist for my color and my girl hang time @ the salon but now have options for an on the spot hair cut in btw. Awesome experience! Thanks CJ and Riyad!! read more

I have been going here to see Ronnie every Friday for the past 4 months. I am never dissappointed when I go in there. I started seeing Ronnie after I made an appointment with another shop in Oakland in which the barber flaked on me. I decided to go to Gold & Gifted, because they were less than ten minutes from my house and they always do quality work. I made the mistake of getting my first haircut in Reno, from a dude who had smoked out at 8 am. He had my hair growing into this semi fro hawk that I was not feeling at all. Ronnie hooks me up and I let him do whatever he wants. I even have my brother going over there now, and he had been going to his barber for almost five years. read more

After graduating from college I decided that it was time to switch up my hair finally and move from the asian styles I had always gotten (because I had been going to the same lady for the past 8 years) to something more classic, western, and professional. I had already begun trying to change the style at my previous stylist but didn't have any experience with this type of style so I looked up barbers to go to hoping to get some input and advice along with a more western cut. My first experience with Gold and Gifted was with Ronnie. I walked in at opening time on a Saturday and he was free so he immediately sat me down and we began discussing how I wanted to try to start growing out a long disconnected undercut. He seemed to understand what I wanted and was accomodating to what I was looking for, often stopping during the process to show me what had been done to make sure he got everything right. Since then, I have visited a few more times getting cuts from Ronnie and Naz, both of which have given me good advice and some nice chats. However, the reason for a loss of a star is that they are really chill people...sometimes too chill...in the sense that I've had to wait more than 30 minutes past my appointment time for a cut and one of those times I was actually the first appointment (which basically means the shop was late 30 minutes to open up for the day). Additionally, I am from Fremont but went to school here so I come back to visit friends and get cuts, so it is a bit of a drive for me to get here. And I was unfortunately unable to figure out the perfect style for my own face shape and head shape here (which is at no fault to the barbers here, as I made specific requests that were thoroughly met). So I am not considering that in my review but thought it would be good to share anyway. I think I would recommend to anyone in a similar situation who is Asian and has never had experience with a barber shop to pick a standard cut (basically anything with a specific name ie. combover, side part, undercut, etc.) and a picture and then work from there to figure out the best thing for your faceshape. You probably won't get it right the first time especially if you come from a background of asian styles, but it's what worked for me. Overall, I would recommend them for those in the Berkeley area. $20 plus tip for a cut is a pretty standard price, but definitely set aside some time in the day as they do tend to get busy and are not the most punctual. read more

I stayed in Berkeley for the weekend and was looking for a haircut. I yelped for barbershops in that area and Gold & Gifted came up on top. Reviews were great so I gave it a try. Called in for an appointment for Ronnie since he had great reviews about his cuts. I arrived about 1/2 hour later or so, Ronnie was busy, so Wowie took me in. I wanted to try a new look (comb over with taper) and Wowie gave me some nice inputs. Dude is chill and respectful. Had a good time chatting it up with him while he was cutting my hair. My haircut turned out great. And the hair styling product (suavecito pomade) that he put on my hair is dope. Love it!! Smells and works great. I had to get some after this hair cut. Overall, the whole shop and the barbers were chill and respectful. Wowie is my dude to go but everyone else is great. Wished the place was closer to my home (Sacramento) but I'll be stopping by every once in a while. read more

Clothing and cuts? This is definitely a fresh concept that I've yet to see in my area of SoCal and I'm glad I had the opportunity to scope out this joint while making a random pit stop in Berkeley. THE DIGS and SERVICE: The concept of putting together two things that people look for for which is good clothing and quality cuts in one store definitely makes it a one-stop shop for people on the fly. The store splits itself in two with the barbershop portion in the back half of the shop and the clothing up front. The fellas taking care of the cashier and front were funny, helpful and chill when it came to helping me out and honest! I almost left without my card and one of them stopped me midway in my dash out the joint. It's definitely appreciated, homie. THE THREADS and GOODS: Whether you're looking for a fresh comb-over, dope clothing or you're if about that vape life (Uh naw. Not me.), then this is the store for you. My business with them was for clothing and they had a decent amount of options for both men and women. I ended up snagging a black crop top for my little sis and she was thoroughly pleased. I needed a cut and every where else was super busy so I stopped by and was able to been seen with I'm 10mins I went to the barber in the first chair I think his name was Reyad. I asked for a tapper and needed him to fix somthing that another barber had messed up and he did it. The blend on my taper was superb and my hairline was clean and crisp.
