Maddix is great! It was easy to make an appointment. The shop is clean and organized with great barbering artifacts adorning the walls. Excellent product selection and most importantly the haircut was perfect! Ps. Yelp blows. read more

This guy can give a haircut like NO one!! Before I started going to Maddix, the only person I would let cut my hair was, well, me. I decided I wanted a cleaner look, and gave him a try - and I never looked back. Amazing cut, great price, and he's always right on time. If I had the option for more than 5 stars, I'd give more. read more

Maddix Bruyn Traditional Barber - Revival - Barbers Near Me - Berkeley, California

Maddix is probably one of the best reasons you could have for living in the East Bay. Getting my haircut by him has been perhaps my best life choice. I refer to him as my "God-Barber", because what he does is not of this Earth. To say he has 'the touch' would be the understatement of the century. I spent months on months getting butchered at different barber shops and salons, wholly dissatisfied with the lackluster results I was paying for. Enter: God-Barber Maddix. I think his hair cutting technique must involve some kind of voodoo or black magic, because there are normally no circumstances under which I should be this good looking. All for thirty-five bucks? Why are you still reading this? Go book an appointment. read more

If you want a barber who knows his shit but isn't pretentious about it, then Maddix is your dude. I was SUPER nervous about finding a new barber after my old one moved out of state, and am glad I didn't have to look too far to find a new one. He always makes me feel comfortable, always gets me in for an appointment, and gets me on my way after a cut relatively quickly. Also, if you're pierced, tattooed, queer, or alternative in any way- he won't make you feel like a weirdo. Which is a complete blessing walking into a traditional barber shop. read more

I was pretty nervous about a new cut because I had a wedding later in the day. I spent a few months growing my hair to leave the long tenured Asian Fo hawk and was unsure what to do. I was immediately welcomed by the staff and they even offered me a beer as I was listening to Old school jazz music in a relaxed setting. (which was perfect for my hangover that Saturday morning) Everyone here complaining about the price should have asked before making an appointment. This was my first time going to a real Barber at least in my adult life and I was pretty Damn impressed. I asked for a cut that was modern yet profession since I wear a suit everyday. Maddix definitely listened unlike countless other "salons" that would provide a jarhead cut that was Wayyy too high and tight. Don't get me wrong I love those captions but just not when it comes to my hair. I will definitely go back and the $40 I spent with tip was well worth it. read more

I first went to see Maddix when I had a typical lesbian faux hawk. I wanted to move away from that look and was open to any of his suggestions. Over the next year we tried a few different styles and have finally graduated with THE hairdo. Now I religiously see Maddix every 2-ish months. I always look forward to sitting in his chair and listen to the barbers bantering. Can't get any more Oakland than that. I've brought several of my buddies to get their hair (head and beards) cut with Maddix and they've each been very happy with the results. There was a brief moment where I nearly immigrated to New Zealand a few months ago and seriously pleaded with Maddix to move with me. I know, totally selfish of me, but he does GREAT hair and do you know how hard it is to find a good barber these days?! I've tried the other local barbers and they all failed me. Sometimes I wish I could grow a nice full beard just so Maddix can work his magic on it. Even bigger kudos that he's got a really sweet pup. But not while at work. (ps) I would suggest making an appointment rather than walking-in, especially if you have a wedding to go to the next day. read more

Maddix listens to what you actually want. I feel relieved that I have found such a skilled Barber. Speaking of his skillz, this guy gives one hell of a straight razor shave! read more

Amazing. I'm writing a separate review for the barber shop as a whole, because they definitely deserve it. To keep it simple, Maddix is: -$35 for a haircut (not Supercuts prices, but then again, not too bad at all; plus, you get what you pay for) -Cash only -Books a week in advance (through text if you so desire) -Friendly, laid back, and conversational -Fast -Extremely competent and knowledgeable. In other words, tell him what you are going for/want and he will help make it happen, exactly how you want. He is not just a simple old-school barber, he can actually conceptualize hair and can hook up edgier looks. -Last but not least, gives you a traditional shave on your neck with professional precision Highly, highly recommended. read more

HE is a Monster! I never saw something like that before! and in way he does it!! is impressive! as I Notice he blands the hair using (from the bottom to the top) almost all the size plastic guards! what it does is help the hair grows even keeping the hair organized when grows! Thanks Teacher!!!!!!!!!! read more

Maddix is meticulous. He takes pride in his work and it shows. I never got a bad haircut from him in the three years he's been cutting my hair. And he gives a great shave too. Highly recommend. read more

Protip: The phone number listed here is Maddix's cell phone. Text him to make an appointment. As he noted, he's usually booked out a week in advance. I started off by texting Maddix. He was very helpful and courteous. He could not accommodate my very much last minute and certainly unreasonable request to get into a Saturday morning appointment (I was texting him on Friday night). However, he did refer me to Frank and assured me that the cut would be comparable. I texted Frank and setup an appointment for 11am on Saturday. I arrived for said appointment roughly 30 minutes early and enjoyed the general ambiance of the place while I perused some books that they had. Another person was already waiting for Frank when I got there. A beer was offered, but I didn't feel like drinking a PBR or Guinness so I politely declined. 30 minutes roll by and Frank is now quite late for the other gentleman's appointment. That person ends up getting a haircut from another available barber (I don't blame him). Another 20 minutes roll by and I'm still without a barber... I approached Maddix as he was seeing a customer out and he contacted Frank to see where he was. After another several minutes, Maddix saved the day and offered to give me a cut while he waits for his next appointment. I had been growing out my hair for a few weeks and wanted something different. I originally had a faux hawk, but wanted to look a bit more grown up. Maddix lined me up with a versatile style that is still going strong a couple weeks later. I may have been hesitant about paying $35 for a barber cut before, but I completely understand the qualitative difference now through Maddix's work. read more

Escape Temescal Alley. I had grown tired of the two+hour waits; the structuring of my entire day off around a haircut. The inevitable money I would drop (or want to drop) at Standard & Strange. But, I was afraid to go just anywhere, after all, this was my hair. While The Alley did a good enough job, I never felt there was a conceptual grasp (or concern about that) as to what I was looking for. Sure, they would go high and tight fine with the razor, but the top was never really doing it for me. SO, I looked on Yelp. And I looked, and looked. And, eventually, I stumbled onto to Maddix's page, and realized that not only was he well reviewed, but he took appointments and he was 5 blocks from my home. Done deal. Got my first haircut today, and I was very happy with the experience. Maddix is a cool guy who knows what he is doing. He's definitely a cut above the typical barber experience in the East Bay, and I will be going back for sure... read more

Why didn't I discover Maddix sooner? I moved to the East Bay nearly 6 years ago and have struggled to find a reliable barber until I stumbled upon Maddix earlier this year. I've tried a number of places but was usually disappointed. When I did find a place I liked, it ended up being too busy, too expensive, too uncomfortable, or too difficult to get to and make appointments. I need something more reliable and less stressful than that when I'm dying for a haircut! Maddix, on the other hand, has been a lifesaver: 1. He's always been readily available to fit me in with an appointment (w/in 24 hours most times) 2. His location is convenient with plenty of free parking. 3. His prices are totally worth it (Yes, in comparison to other barbers out there it may feel pricey but break it down. If you see a him just once a month it's about $1 a day to look like a hundred bucks. In other words, treat yo' self!) 4. He's personable and professional. Regardless if you're a guy or girl he'll make you feel comfortable. 5. He's just a damn good barber. I try to come in once a month and I leave loving my hair every single time. I have a lot of hair that's super thick and pretty straight/stubborn but Maddix knows exactly what to do to make it look good even as it grows out. Thanks Maddix for some of the cleanest haircuts my head has ever seen. Keep up the great work! read more

I highly recommend Maddix. Making an appointment was easy via text. He got back to me very quickly. I showed up with my shoulder length hair, and he cut it down to a traditional pompadour in a jiff. Great attention to detail!!! And I left his barber chair feeling like a million bucks. The barber shop is legit. Excellent and upstanding characters all around. read more

I have honestly never been to a true barber before and I definitely wanted to check out Maddix's skills since his hair is spot on every time. I asked for the "executive" style and he did exactly what I wanted. I will never get a haircut from a random place again. His razor cut was nice I felt damn sexy after. I highly recommend his skills! read more

In technical terms, Maddix is a master craftsman, his fades parts pomps and so forth are top notch and consistently so. He's given me a couple of my life's best haircuts, and I suspect it is not simply craftsmanship at work but an aptitude for harmonious shape-making. Maddix has the eye of a visionary and will cut your hair in such a way as to transform you into the cinema alter ego you imagine in the film of your own life. You will look good when he's done with you, this is indisputable but more so, you will feel the most attractive you've felt in longer than you might like to acknowledge. read more

I agree with all of the previous reviews. Maddix gives a great cut and makes you feel comfortable. I brought my 16-year old son, who was really skeptical about visiting a barber. He left thrilled by the experience. read more

Excellent barber! Listens and executes to perfection (and I'm picky af). Clean shop, friendly staff. Truly worth your business.

I've been going to Maddix for years now. There is one simple reason for this. He is a true artist of his craft. I get compliments almost every day on my hair. Even weeks after a cut I've had some one stop me on the street to compliment the fade. I love sitting back and knowing that I will walk out of the shop looking fantastic. There are not many things you can pamper yourselves with these days that don't cost a fortune. I know that for $35, once or twice a month, I can go see Maddix for a phenomenal haircut, great conversation and a one of a kind atmosphere. read more

Maddix is a master barber, truly gifted and meticulous at his craft. His precision with a straight edge razor is impeccable. I have been a satisfied regular customer of his for over six years. Yes, I've been to the others: Temescal Alley, Slick and Dapper, to name a few, and I must say Maddix is by far the best. A great barber is really hard to find and to hold onto, Maddix is gold! I highly recommend him, you'll need to plan ahead, and he gets booked up fast. His online booking system is really easy to use, and his new shop he owns with his wife and hairstylist Dani is gorgeous, and in a great location. Check out: www.revival510.com read more

I won't let anyone else touch my handsome husband's hair! Maddix does the best job and makes every client look like a million bucks for considerably less than that. Cannot recommend him highly enough. read more

I'm pretty picky about who cuts my hair and lets put it this way: I'm thinking of putting Maddix in my will. I've gotten random compliments about my hair from both sexes. Seriously. And if you like a close shave, he's the deadliest man west of the Mississippi with a straight edge razor. On top of that he has a great demeanor: professional and warm. Stop being such a cheapskate and call this guy. read more

Maddix does a great job on my hair. He's always friendly and welcoming and just genuinely a nice guy. More than that though he really cares about doing a good job for the queer community. As a trans man, I always wanted to find a barber that would do a good job but also not make me feel like a total outsider. Ta da! Why was that so hard? read more

Maddix does the best cuts in town! Been going to him for a few years now. I get a vintage cut and it grows out nice and even so I don't have to worry about it looking funky in between cuts. It looks great for interviews and important occasions too. 5 stars! read more

Maddix is my barber. He is THE barber. Everything I want and I will never leave him. My husband and I found him and will never let him go. And of course, he is slick and dapper himself! read more

This place, and Maddix specifically, is completely queer/LGBT (ESP L and T) friendly! I felt 100% comfortable, and as someone who is usually read as a dyke I am normally intimidated by barbershops. But Maddix and his colleagues rock. read more

Best barber I've had. Has a great manner, and I'm always stoked about how I look. His line work and clean details really leave a good cut looking sharp. Oh, so a buzz cut is thirty $32.50. I got 30% percent off. So yeah, $25 bucks total. Awesome, what a deal. And no prices posted nor was one agreed upon. Not even going to get into the racist joke the female stylist made when I was there. read more

Hadn't had a haircut in months and decided it was time. Found Maddix from his 5 star reviews on yelp and took a chance. Best grooming decision I have ever made. Loved the shop as soon as I walked in the door. It's a great place to chill and hang out while waiting. Has a great atmosphere and from the moment I walked in I knew it was going to be great. Maddix is super chill and definitely knows the tools of the trade. I wish I had found out about him sooner. Once you've visited him for a cut you'll never be able to go to a salon again. I will definitely be back for my future cuts! Check him out! read more

Maddix does cool women's undercuts for a very reasonable price. I didn't see a lot of women posting here so I was a bit nervous, but the razor works the same! ;) Seriously, I was really taken aback by how friendly he was, how reasonable the price was, and how comfortable he made me feel. It's kind of nerve-wracking to get part of your head shaved if you're a girl. He actually did it in 2 stages, to make sure I was happy with the result. Thanks so much for the great experience!! read more

Maddix can do no wrong. He's been cutting my hair like a boss for years. We kinda grew up together first sharing boohoo stories about our crummy exgirls, then hit the jackpot and got married to some awesome super-hot women, then had kids. It's been a long and exciting road. The whole way my hair has looked super fresh and tight as sheit. The fades are out of control, the razor edges will cut you finger off, and the pomps are pompin.' Don't let some dufus jack your hair homie. Call Maddix today. read more

Maddix is the Steph Curry of barbers. Real talk. You've never seen your hair blend like this.

Visited this shop for the first time. Lucky trimmed my beard, and lined me up, which is what I requested. But he also cleaned up my neckline and around my ears without me even asking. The man is very skilled, thorough and quick, and took great care of me throughout the entire cut. Definitely has a regular customer now, made me look great! Always trust a dude with a great beard himself. read more

Completely over rated... By himself of all peeps. Very full of himself and the cut was only so-so. But the real kicker was he charged $30 pre-tip for an easy fade. Sticker shock to say the least! Worst part is.. Like I said the cut was so-so. It wasn't completely botched as in very uneven but it was definitely a very low grade fade. I wouldn't go back if it cost $10, but $30???!! Please dude, you're a barber in training not a rock star. Oh, all he did was bad mouth other barbers in town and praise himself. Which actually helped me, as I went to a shop he bashed and they're awesome! Guess being a barber for a whole year gives him a title... Right. Miss me. read more
