She was also fun to chat with and I never felt pressured to spend more money with her - for example I asked her if I could decide later on if I wanted to tone the bleach. She was also very patient in answering my questions. I thoroughly appreciate it! Also to add on to my last review about Andrew that I forgot to mention - he was able to translate my request into a haircut I was happy with (I told him I was preparing for a job interview and wanted a haircut that fit the image). Also throughout the week, I actually got a lot of compliments. My advice about calling right when the store opens remains - I called right at opening this past Sunday at 11AM and I was already 6th in line. Also would recommend calling ahead even though they accept walk ins - I was seeing people walking in getting told they were overbooked. They do have a small parking lot that is metered, but parking is free on Sundays. I love how so far in my experience with The Shop, I have never felt pressured by anyone to spend more money on products they sell. La Petite Hair Salon

I'd been in Berkeley for three weeks straight, about two weeks past my last haircut, and the…read moresituation was becoming untenable. I was not scheduled to return to LA for several more weeks. We were having an 87-degree day in West Berkeley, which -- for those unfamiliar -- is hot for West Berkeley, a neighborhood where the default setting is breezy and cloudy and lovely and sixty-three degrees, the kind of microclimate that lets you own one jacket and never think about it. Eighty-seven degrees in West Berkeley is an event. Eighty-seven degrees with hair that's two weeks past due is a crisis. I have Asian hair. I've written about this before. It is coarse and thick and grows outward like a porcupine asserting its personal space, and my coping mechanism in Los Angeles was to throw $85 at a hipster barbershop every three weeks to make it stop. This worked in the way that all expensive coping mechanisms work -- reliably, but at a cost that quietly compounds until one day you do the annual math and feel ill. 2026 being what it is, and a dollar these days being asked to do about a dollar forty's worth of work, I needed a new tack. I asked an AI assistant for a good cheap haircut in Berkeley and got several suggestions, which I then searched on Yelp -- yes, the very Yelp you are looking at, imagine that -- for reviews. One thing I noticed about La Petite was that people mentioned Asian women cutting hair there, and the photos confirmed it. I had a thought, the kind of thought that sounds reductive when you say it out loud but is grounded in lived experience: Asian women probably know how to deal with hair like mine. This is not a stereotype. This is pattern recognition developed over decades of watching non-Asian barbers stare at my head with the quiet bewilderment of someone asked to solve a math problem in a language they don't speak. No shade intended, just facts. So I gave La Petite a go. You watch closely when someone new is cutting your hair. You can't help it. You're tracking every snip in the mirror, reading their hands the way you'd read a stranger's driving in the first five minutes of a road trip -- are we safe here, does this person know what they're doing, should I have said something three turns ago. About halfway through, I watched her take volume out of my hair in a way that hadn't been done in years -- not just trimming the length but actually understanding the architecture of thick Asian hair, where the bulk lives, how it falls, how it will eventually grow out, where it needs to be thinned so it lies flat instead of projecting horizontally from your skull like it's staging a protest. She knew. I knew she knew. I had my new stylist. Twenty-eight dollars. Twenty-eight dollars, and I walked out with the best haircut I've had in longer than I'd like to admit. That's $57 left over from what I was paying in LA -- enough to buy groceries, or three martinis at happy hour, or a pizza at June's, or whatever you buy when you realize you've been dramatically overpaying for a basic human service because you confused a cool neighborhood and exposed brick with competence. La Petite has neither exposed brick nor a cocktail menu. What it has is someone who looked at my difficult hair and knew exactly what to do with it, which is the only thing that has ever mattered and the only thing I'm paying for from now on.

I went to get a haircut Friday afternoon for a special occasion and showed them exactly what I…read morewanted: a classic Ben Affleck Bruce Wayne-style haircut with regular-sized sideburns, just like the character. They asked me if I was graduating, and I said no, I was meeting my fiancée's mom the next day. Five minutes before the haircut was finished, the stylist took a big chunk off my right sideburn. She cut it too high, which ruined the whole haircut, especially since my face shape doesn't suit short sideburns. I told her I didn't like it. I didn't overreact or yell, I was just uncomfortable. The hairdresser said, "Too bad!" and tried to dismiss the issue. I told her again that she should have asked me about the length. She then took it personally and told her boss that I was making things up so I wouldn't pay, saying, "They do this so they don't pay." What do you mean by "they"? Not only did I feel dismissed and treated unprofessionally, but also disrespected. I was upset after the whole situation, but even then I was willing to pay and didn't want to leave without paying because I didn't want to prove her point. Plus, it's not that expensive. At the end, the stylist said she had 40 years of experience. Well, after this, it feels like you wasted 40 years and somehow skipped the basics of customer service. Not coming back, even after being offered a free haircut. I would rather pay three times what I paid today for a standard service where you're treated with basic courtesy.

HOMOPHOBIC. unwelcoming business full of antiquated fade outs who parade around back slapping' and fronting as if they are the next gen, when in fact they are everything throw back to the olden days of barbering, including, the male chauvinism, sexism, ageism, Trans, and HOMOPHOBIA right out of the 1950s. As if that isn't bad enough, the business owner, who used to cut hair is no longer present, he walks in occasionally, back slaps the others he calls mentees and promotes to senior barbers and titles like barber, senior barber, and trainee, mentee, and others and what you really get are hacks, TWICE. not just once but twice. i have ended up with hair cuts that have parts where short spikes of hair jut out in the middle of a part while other longer hairs lay flat on the sides it's ridiculous. this happens bc they don't know how to confidently cut hair that lays flat. if you want your hair to be puffed on top and skinned on the sides thats all they know how to do. if you like your hair to be even or fade with no skin showing they can't do it, and worse if you want a part in your hair they mess it up. big time bc they only know one thing flat top buffants. so if you want to look like a TRUMP military jerk, go here, you'll fit right in. i used to teach multicultural education, and i love to support MBEs, but don't let the owner's minority status fool you he's a wolf in sheep's clothing this one. watch out, take your business elsewhere. the business owner just to be very very clear when i said the barber, messed up my hair and showed him a photo, he acknowledge the bad cut and then said i would need to come in again and i would NOT charge me a second time, ie TWICE, gee you think, and then when i said, are you kidding, that's the very least, and he actually tried to put me with a barber who was the very worst most homophobic man in the room, the last time i was there, you have got to be kidding me. i mean one after the other, three out of five that's not a good track record and based on all the hooting and back slapping and literally fist pumping when they are there, it's like a sausage factory on str8 guy steroids, it's the MOST unwelcoming environment and they pass it off as men's empowerment, yeah men's empowerment alright, right out of the pages of right pages not cool guys, not cool. BEWARE, HOMOPHOBIC business owner. who seriously doesnt know business and can't train a hair cutter to save his life. read more

Men's Grooming: This goes without saying, I want to feel great when my appointment is over and definately look better going out than I did going in. We can ask for the "quick, i'm in a hurry" or the "take your time- I need to relax and get grounded in the proper things of life" So, after a visit to MJ Solofa Grooming it was easy to see and feel the style of a true craftsman. This establishment takes you back to an era when men were men and regularly got a razor shave and a haircut. Their personal Barber would taylor fit your service and treat you as the important individual you were regardless of your background or Status. This Barber, Mark, has got a very classy style all his own and his Grooming Salon is a worthy extension of this persona. I could get a sense that he is very well trained at his craft. I was able to ask," What do you think I should do...?" and Mark Jason had several options for me to choose. I think this shop is Mark's newest location, however it already has a great sense of history and relevence. The atmosphere is comfortable and relaxing which allowed me to unwind and take a breather while the master did all the work. Mark was attentive and very detail oriented, something I place a high value on. He is able to cut your hair any style you'd like and give you that fresh vintage look or even that edgy style you have been thinking about doing but didn't know how to make it happen. The prices are very reasonable for the level of service and expertise you will receive. I actually felt great paying the man for a job well done. And this is why I am so confident in writing this review. I budget and choose wisely where I spend my time and money. I will drive to Berkeley for Mark Jason Solofa Grooming services, because it is worth it to me to get that " Classic men's grooming feel. And, I like supporting great local businesses that have heart. I made an appointment- it was simple to do. You will avoid the crowds at Solofa Grooming and you won't have to share your time with other dudes trying to say, "what's up?" to your Barber while he's supposed to be cutting your hair, you get Mr. Solofa's undivided attention. I hope this review helps you. I think I will let my 5 o'clock shaddow grow a bit just so I can get a razor shave from Mark on my next visit. Definately an item to check off on my bucket list. A men's shave and a haircut. read more

If you're looking for an old school barber shop vibe with exceptional service, look no further than MJS in Berkeley! From the moment you walk in the door, you'll be greeted with a warm smile and made to feel like they've know you for years. The barbers here are true professionals, with years of experience and a passion for their craft. Whether you're looking for a classic haircut or something a bit more modern, they'll know exactly what to do without having to explain it. But it's not just their technical skills that make this barber shop stand out. It's their commitment to customer service that really sets them apart. Being in a service industry, my entire life this is something I truly appreciate when it's genuine and not forced. They take the time to listen to your needs and preferences, and they always go the extra mile to ensure that you're completely satisfied with the final result. And it's not just your barber who is friendly and helpful. The entire staff takes the time to be welcoming and attentive, making you feel like more than a customer every time you visit. Overall, I can't recommend MJS highly enough. If you're looking for a barber shop that truly cares about its customers and provides exceptional service, this is the place to go. Five stars all the way! read more

I have been going to MJ Solofa Mens Grooming more than five times and the haircut and Bourbon are fantastic. You need to make an appointment several weeks in advance but sometimes clients cancel and you get an opportunity. MJ Solofa is a very friendly traditional barber shop taking his time to do a great job. If he likes you, he will offer you a shot of Bourbon. Great atmosphere and retro decorations. You see the bottle of Bourbon on the shelf right in front of your nose during the 30 min haircut and it is just at the end that you get the shot of whiskey... Lot of suspense! Definitely a different experience with great suggestions in terms of haircut and beard trim. Very worthwhile if you like old school grooming, a very friendly welcome, and a lot of talk. read more

I checked this place out on a whim while out visiting family in Oakland. This is a GREAT old school barber shop. The staff pay meticulous attn to detail and understand that there's a place for combining an old-school barber shop vibe without turning into an uber-macho sports bar hang out. The barbers are gentlemen and in some cases travel out of their way to contribute to be a part of this special spot. I got a really nice cut and shave at my weekday appointment. Good conversation.
