David is a really nice guy but not a great barber…read more The "studio" is basically a living room converted, it doesn't feel very clean, and there was no ventilation so felt stuffy and unhygienic. I have really short hair (like crew cut short), and was looking to clean my fade and trim the top. His tools are old and got hot really fast against my scalp. When he was done, i noticed he only cleaned my sideburns on one side and my bangs were slightly lopsided and the fade wasn't very clean. I didn't say anything because he seemed anxious to get to the next customer who was waiting for 15 min and I figured I could fix it easily myself. But after I got home, my partner saw the backside of head and noticed a big tuft of hair sticking out the top. He basically didn't finish the fade in the back so there was this abrupt transition from short to long hair. Also, I should have been charged men's cut which is $21 versus women's $26 because my hair is SHORT. But after he finished, he asks me "you're a women right...?" To which I said yes, so he charged me $26. This traditional and outdated gender imbalance in the hair cutting world is so disappointing.

My son's hair is super straight, but he had been wanting braids all summer, so he committed to growing it out just for this. And if you've ever had your hair twisted or braided, you know it can hurt! Anthony had such a gentle touch, was patient with him, and just kept it pushing until he finished about three hours later. My son was in FULL joy when he saw the final result! Yonas, the owner, was there too and had a really cool, welcoming vibe. Scheduling can be tough, but my husband says he can usually get an appointment within a few days of calling, but you do have to be flexible with times. The place was getting new floors when I was there, so a little under construction, but they were bumping beats and each station had a mini flatscreen playing ESPN. I have been a resident of Oakland since May 2001 and the Bay Area since August 1976. I needed a trim recently and decided to patronize the new to me barbershop and salon located at the same spot on College Ave as a walk-in. I entered the salon and sat down in the one seat facing the street as the 4 stylists, visible, worked on their clients. I waited for someone to finish to see if I could get a haircut. After about a 20 minute wait and no one approaching me until the stylist nearest me and the street window finished with his client. He advised if I want a haircut that I would need to make an appointment next door. I asked him if he would be free and he said he didn't have any appointment. As I was waiting no one came to me to let me know about their appointment process. There was a young teenager sweeping the floor. It was as if I was invisible . I walk next door and there was no one at the reception desk. I then notice a young woman in the closet and asked her who do I speak with about making an appointment. She got up and approached me and asked me if there was anyone of the stylists I wanted and responded No. I just want a trim. She walks into the salon next door to ask and returns to tell me there was no one available. What upset me most was that the stylist I spoke with said he was available and than she returns to say they have no appointments open for the day. Recommendation to Salon Manager/Owner: Close the door to salon and post a sign stating appointments required, please go next door. Or Instruct all stylists for any walk-Ins, please stop what you are doing and direct them next door to make an appointment. Or Advise the stylist assistant sweeping the floor to approach any walk-Ins and ask if they have an appointment. If they don't direct them to the appointment desk next door. I Also overheard while waiting one of the male stylists complaining about something and he knew I was there but didn't approach me. I will not go back and patronize a business that clearly lacks customer service or even offer to make an appointment for another day. I told the young woman that my experience wasn't good for business.
