ArtBox - Prices are in Korean Won!

ArtBox

Woodside, Astoria

ArtBox, a supposedly well known stationery store in Korea. They open one up inside H Mart,…read moreoccupying the space that used to be customer service and claw machines. At first I was hopeful that H Mart would use this space for more restaurant stalls after it created a 4 stall food hall last May, followed by another 5 stall section in the summer. But no more restaurant stalls. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Browsing through the store did bring back a lot of my sweet childhood memories in Asia. Stationery stores in Asia were students' favorite stops. I remember in classes and during recess, we would show off fancy pencils, fragrant erasers, sick stickers, and transformer-level pencil cases. Well, that's what ArtBox offers, and more - what every student would love to own and show off in class. One thing that is totally unique here, well in addition to merchandise offered, is the price tags. The prices are printed in Korean Won (currency) during packaging, presumably in Korea. And the store would have a placard of "price list" at every section, tabling the amounts equivalent in US Dollars! Another observation is there was no staff in the store proper! No cash registers either. I suppose one pays at the supermarket check-out?! I suspect ARTBOX isn't just for students and kids. I think grown up women might find many desirable items here too, such as plushes. I can see this as a fun date stop after some fun dishes at the adjacent food hall. Everything is cute. Not so much for men though I'm afraid - unless they are being held hostage and under duress by their kids (or date) lol.

I am so glad to have this store in our neighborhood! I buy art supplies here whenever I need them,…read moreI also use them for printing. I gave up on my home printer years ago and now rely on them. I find the people who work there/owners to be helpful and neighborly.

I arrived Wednesday evening to pick the prints and was told scornfully "I told you Thursday or Friday" . The man was not only wrong but very combative in his tone and language. I can understand if the prints were not made by the set pickup date but I can not understand the need to act defensively and the attempt to shift blame onto me, the paying client. The man told me I could come back Thursday and I asked if he was positive and he confirmed. He said he would text me when they were done and I left. I walked in Thursday afternoon and the man said "you're here to pick up the prints aren't you, I told you Thursday or Friday and that I would text you". He wasn't apologetic he was annoyed. I countered he confirmed they would be ready Thursday and he became even more argumentative and dismissive. Regardless of the pick up times that were argued, this is extremely poor customer service. I paid in advance for a service which was not rendered in the agreed upon timeframe and instead of being accommodating or at the least kind about it I was met with contempt and made to feel like I was an annoyance. This is inexcusable. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this place.

I felt like the inside parts of my brain--full of brightly-colored muppets and vintage earrings, handmade ornaments, and more--were in the store. The owner was so friendly, and had a personal story connected to every item and vendor she worked with. The store was bright, and fun, whimsical and truly a place to find a gift for your kids at heart, children or all ages, the whimsical sort! Please check them out! The prices are affordable and everything is special.

It is very hard to resist, and hold yourself off from buying anything once you walk through the door. It is a small space, maybe a size of a bedroom, packed literally to the ceiling. You can find anything from socks, pins, books, plushies, earrings, hats, candles, more socks, hats, keychains, baby clothes, puzzles, cards and so, so, so much more! Some things are handmade and/or locally designed. The store is mostly Sunnyside/ Queens/ NYC themed. The lady working there is friendly and helpful. Prices are no different then in other gift shops. Generally a good spot to pick up a gift, or just some retail therapy.
