I received a quote today to replace a whole home humidifier (an AprilAire 600M) which can be purchased online from reputable retailers from $219 - $275) Their quote was $900. Godwin replaced our 50-gallon hot water heater in January, 2025 for $2,585.75. They replaced the same heater in 2013 for $1,206.75. The price, all in, more than doubled since 2013. We questioned the large increase in price but were told that prices had gone up. The heater was the same size and manufacturer. We agreed to the price because they were already here on a service call and could replace it immediately. We should have shopped around. We were ripped off. I have used both the plumbing and heating services with Godwin for over 23 years now. They have been our exclusive vendor for use on our home in Heritage Hill MI - a more specific historic community. The service teams have always been stellar for us. They know our old and newer boiler system well along with our plumbing needs. They helped us first when we gutted our house and started over with everything new - they laid the ground work for all of those projects. We retained them ever since. Matt and Steve in heating are 5 stars all the way! Carl, Mike, Ty and others are great in plumbing as well. I see some notes from customers here complaining about prices. Yes, things go up every single year on all products and often labor costs too. That's the price of running a business. Always consider doing 2-3 bids on bigger projects to make sure you are paying fair market prices - I have found Godwin always to be in line with no issues. Remember that you are also hiring professionals to install your products vs. you doing it for free yourself. Be aware that Godwin is running a business not a charity - their costs are market appropriate even if you feel they are high. They not been in business all these years because they gouge product prices or wages for employees and make you foot unreasonable work bills. I continue to use Godwin to this day as they have been fair and professional at all times with us and we appreciate that. I'm not a fan of being lied to. I have heard nothing but good things about Godwin. I've shopped there and had a great experience. Not long ago my very old bathroom faucet was leaking. I called Godwin and they came out. They said it was going to be $500+ dollars to replace my whole sink because they don't make the parts for it anymore. I called another plumber, they took the faucet handles off and brought it to Godwin and Godwin replaced the guts of the faucet. The second plumber brought it back and it worked fine. $100. That's like a used car salesman tactic. read more

The pipe going thru our water meter was dripping quite a lot. I called Godwin and talked to Ty in the service Dept. He told me that he would call the city to arrainge a time for them to come out and turn the water off at the street, and he'd coordinate with the repairman so the pipe could be fixed quickly. But first, he told me a home repair trick that worked! So, no service call, no need for city help! It was like having a realitive walk you thru the repair!! read more

Great job replacing our water heater and a leaking shutoff valve for the unit. The tech worked quickly and made sure to go over the estimate before starting and made sure we had no questions when finished. Both our A/C and furnace were on their last legs, so we decided to call around and get a few quotes. Not only did Godwin offer the most competitive price, they were also able to get us in soonest (surprising, considering how many HVAC services are in high-demand around the start of summer)! Both the gentleman that came out to give us the quote, as well as the guys who actually performed the service were prompt, professional, and friendly! I never felt like we were being upsold, and I was impressed that the guy giving our quote was honest about what would fit our situation the best. He gave us a full breakdown of the all services they could provide, but was upfront when he told us "You *could* have this huge furnace installed, but for your house, I don't think you'd get much out of it, I think this other one would be a better fit". The guys who did the actual installing showed up when they said they would, and got straight to work! They replaced both our furnace and AC, hauled the old ones away, and were in and out in about 7 hours! There was zero mess left behind, and I felt great about the work they had done! I needed my sprinkler system inspected per the City of Grand Rapids code. Unfortunately for me I missed the first two notices a s I was in and out of the hospital. I called Godwin and explained my situation to Ty who not only scheduled my inspection he also texted Mike at the City of GR to explain everything was now scheduled. Today Mike stopped by to inspect my system and explained how things worked and everything was up to code. He also showed me possible issues that may happen after 10 years such as the spring or seals may go bad causing a leak. He said not to worry as the system Fliers installed was great. Great job! Godwin did the work quickly, and the cost was very reasonable. I called around to get pricing to replace a cracked spigot, and Godwin was the only place that could explain the solution and quote it over the phone without calling a tech. I knew it was a simple repair, and even after explaining it I was told by several other plumbers that it would be around $300 for parts and labor. Godwin had it done in 45 minutes (they said less than an hour over the phone) and for nearly half that. A+ job guys. Now I know why so many neighbors recommended them. read more

We had Godwin come vent our range hood out for us a couple days ago. I was gone at work but my Wife was home. She told me how professional they were. Steve was the individual who came. He was very polite and knowledgable. He first laid down pads on our wood floor and carpet and put on booties. He cleaned up after him self and everything works perfectly!! Called to come out on a Saturday morning because had no hot water. Tech came in lit piolot and said to go. Never checked anything on heater. It cost 140.00 to push a button. Later in day had to put dial to hottest setting still could not get water above 115. Hope they come out and fix on Monday and not charge for a service call that where the guy only pushed a button and nothing else. read more

They were able to come out the following day and specifically said it was $55 for the service call and $80 per hour. Perfect, at least we know the price is standard! Old guy who could care less about safety for furnace parts. Old guy with gash on his head(godwin employee) just told me they do not retail any furnace parts. Witch I could see glow plugs, thermocouples and flame sensors, as well as filters. Old guy just telling me to go to a Granger when I had said already checked with them and than he tries to sell me vinal water supply line witch does not have a safe heat rating for a furnace pressure vent tube 375 degree. I felt like I knew about furnaces and safety for this stuff after 20 minutes of youtube than this old guy who just gave them impression he couldn't be bothered to help a long time very loyal customer. Godwin was recommended to us by a friend, and we'd always heard good things about them, so when we had a leaky toilet and tub faucet they were the first company we called. The technician was on time, very knowledgeable and friendly, and he did a great job. However, when we called to schedule the work, we were told they would waive the "trip fee" of $55. After the work was done and we'd paid the bill, we noticed this charge on the invoice. My husband called to question it, and whoever answered the phone told him, "We'll waive that fee but don't call us again." Thanks. I think I'll take that advice. EDITED TO ADD: We just found out that this incredibly rude person my husband spoke to was most likely an owner of the company (his name was Tim). I guess this is the kind of thing you can expect from the entire staff, then, since it seems to start at the top. read more

I took a overhead (ceiling) pipe with a built in flange into Godwin that was too long --17". It needed to be cut and rethreaded to 8". The pipe was made of brass but had a nice hex nut on the existing flange that could be padded with a cloth and used to hold on to it while the pipe was cut and rethreaded with 1/2 NPT-14. The person behind the counter wanted nothing to do with it. He wouldn't even check with anyone to see if they felt they could do this simple task. I will never go back to Godwin's as there is no customer service. read more

Don't use this plumbing company. They had no problems coming to my house to remodel two bathrooms. However when I had water dripping through one bathroom ceiling, they were unable to come out to fix it because it was too far away. That tells me it's all about money for them. If you are stuck looking for a plumber, I highly recommend Godwin Plumbing. I called them because a hole appeared in my ceiling and water was dripping out. Godwin sent a plumber and found a poorly-installed wax seal in the apartment upstairs was allowing water to leak. However, the problem continued, and another Godwin plumber arrived and discovered a previously-repaired fix in the ceiling was the culprit. The cost for the two visits was very reasonable, and the plumbers arrived on time, were polite and good-natured, and very knowledgeable in solving a fairly frightening problem for a property owner. I will use Godwin Plumbing again as my go-to plumbing service. If you are a landlord in GR, give Godwin a try ... easy on the wallet and very professional! read more

First of all, my husband wants everything hardware ish purchased at Godwin, because they are the "little guy" in the business world like him. Well give me the big box any day. I needed to buy a part to my Moen faucet, purchased at Godwin, The man who waited on me in the plumbing department J-- was rude.Old guy. He did not want to be bothered. He really didn't want to wait on me, he didn't want to look up the part, since they didn't carry it, well I didn't buy anything. Then I went to the rope department, a Latino kid waited on me, I needed x amount of rope, I had a sample, also purchased at Godwin, we found something close, new coil or used coil, we went with the used coil and it was more expensive, same rope, same everything, just not the same price. Next time I will buy it elsewhere. Maybe they should read their feedback. read more

We have used Godwin Plumbing for over 30 years! Let me and my husband share the reasons why with you today. Of course our water heater had outlived it's long useful life (also installed by Godwin Plumbing) over a weekend - ugh - and now we were tasked with having to replace it ASAP. We made the decision to to begin calling to gather info over the weekend regarding options and pricing, so that when it became time to get the job scheduled on Monday morning, we were ready. Godwin Plumbing made all the extra effort, by any chance if they could, to get our job onto their already filled up for the day schedule. We were pleasantly surprised when they called us back to offer to complete our service later the same day, due in part to a crew getting done earlier than anticipated on another job. The crew arrived as promised, immediately got set up and determined the full scope of the job. They took the time to explain to us very thoroughly what was necessary to complete this replacement process, including product options and what steps in their order would be taking place. Randy Allers, Godwin's representative for the project, guided us through a spectrum of systems tailored to our needs and to various budget levels. Based on his knowledge and our requirements a terrific solution emerged. We were gone during installation and when we returned we had a 21st century HVAC system, working perfectly, in a 1849 house. Winter or summer we lived quite comfortably - and efficiently and affordably. Now we're in a mid-century modern house and once again, needed a complete HVAC system update, we turned to Godwin. Once again Randy gave us a detailed analysis of a range of systems and features, and based upon our notions of what we needed, another fine solution was designed for the house. Now we have a state-of-the-art system, installed seemingly effortless and running perfectly. Randy also coordinated the installation of a new gas range and replaced the existing hot water heater. I'm an architect and I cannot recommend Godwin enough: they listen (a crucial virtue), they respond, and they perform. Godwin plumbing in Grand Rapids Mi should be ashamed of themselves! They are thieves. They were at my home last weekend and charged me $50 over the quote they gave me after walking through the door. That wasn't the worst part. They shut off my water to do a faucet install and when they were finished and left my toilets would not stop running. The plumber needed to do something differently in order to protect the mechanism inside the toilets (turn them off before turning back on the water or something). Anyways I called them back to fix the issue they caused and they claim is lime build up in my pipes and they can't be held responsible. Seriously!!! I know it's not lime in my pipes bc I had my roommate install new parts inside my toilet and it works now. Godwin broke my things and refused to make it right without charging me, shame on them, this is terrible business ethics and no way to treat a customer who has spent thousands of dollars having them fix my hot water heaters and the very same toilets they broke upon return to my home. The plumber knew what he did wrong and didn't seem to think it was a big deal of have me pay him to fix his mistake, Im sick to my stomach. read more

We called Godwin initially to come take a look at our air conditioning unit as it seemed to not have any power to the unit. The unit was brand new as of May 2014 and we had just moved in to the home a week prior. Two guys came out (Al and an apprentice). My wife had a feeling of distrust shortly after meeting the gentleman but figured getting the estimate for the repairs was still worth a shot. When he informed her it would be upwards of $350.00 she said she needed to check with me as I worked out of town because that price seemed high. He then proceeded to give her an invoice for $120.00 just for taking a look at the unit and said that would be knocked off the charge upon completion of the work. She mentioned she just needed an estimate and he said it didn't matter. She reluctantly felt pressured to get the work done as it was still a heavy price tag with nothing done. They completed what they claimed was wrong with the unit which was leaking freon charges us 364.90. My wife hardly uses the air and I work out of town. A few weeks later when I went to use the air again it would again not receive any power. I went out and inspected the unit by taking a look at the breaker, it seemed okay. We called Godwin with the same fella coming out for a "follow up". He took a look at the unit and gave my wife an invoice for $58.50 which was due today and $600.00 to fix the brand new unit saying the compressor was locked and needed to be replaced. Why I was paying another $58.50 for him to follow up I had no idea. He claimed because it was something different which made no sense to us. I came home shortly after Al left and couldn't believe the estimate with this being a new unit. I went out again to inspect the unit and seen that the breaker was turned upside down and reinserted so the power would not work. I know it was not like this as I had just looked at it the night before. He was sabotaging my unit trying to take advantage of my wife and I when it was just a simple switch in the basement that he flipped on from the breaker inside that somehow got flipped. I am positive he knew what he was doing when he inserted the breaker wrong. Now we are questioning whether any of the work needed to be done at all on the unit and we spent $364.90 with this company. We will never use this company again and would like to prevent other residents of Grand Rapids from having this same issue with Godwin. I did call Godwin and spoke with a manager only for him to explain and explain things to me about what was wrong according to Al. I informed him that I felt sabotaged and that I would not pay the $58.50 or ever use their company again. Never use this company Alger Heating and Cooling has been our go to. read more
