What happened to the local hardware stores? Luckily there are still a few around. But Modern Hardware isn't your grandparents' neighborhood hardware store. For a small store (compared to the big box stores) they seem to magically pack in a large range of products. You can find many of your basic home project supplies here, but what they're really known for is their bathroom fixtures and hardware, with an impressive selection of sinks, faucets, towel racks, drawer handles and knobs. read more

A broken window at my rental house is what led me to Modern Hardware recently. Before meeting the glass team at Modern Hardware, I had been told that I would probably need a new frame and/or glass-block the window space in (costing $150+). Modern Hardware was able to repair the frame and put a new glass pane in for about $25. With speedy service to boot! The turnaround time was about a weekend. And from the glass and window crew to the front desk staff members, everyone was friendly and helpful during my visits. It was such a great experience that I can't wait to have another broken window on my rental! Just kidding. That's not true; I don't want that. I needed the screen replaced on a Slider door. I initially called and spoke with Adrian and inquired about cost, turnaround time, etc. His responses were very professional and matter of fact. I dropped the screen off on a Thursday afternoon. The person that took the screen was Adrian. He let me know of the $10 deposit and that it may take 2-3 days due to their volume of repairs. Most likely, it would be ready on Monday. Around 11AM the following day, I received a call from Adrian to let me know he was able to get the screen replaced and I could pick it up any time! When I picked it up, I was impressed with the quality workmanship. The screen was tightly fit and perfectly aligned to the frame. When I find great service, it keeps me coming back. When it's great service and high quality, I have no reason to go anywhere else. As far as the price goes, I don't think I could find a better one. Thanks Adrian and Modern Hardware. I had ordered some cabinet pulls and hinges from Modern Hardware because I couldn't find any other companies that would let me order just 6 of this particular type (we are adding on to existing cabinets). When we got the call that they came in my wife and I drove from Holland to GR to pick them up. The pulls were correct but the hinges were white, not black (the code was WI for wrought iron and W for white, so it was their mistake). They handled it so professionally and didn't blame anyone but instead fell on the sword and said it was their mistake and that they would ship them directly to Holland so that we would not have to drive up again. In today's world it's hard to find a company that takes responsibility and goes out of their way, at their expense, to make it right. They were very apologetic and great to work with. I will stop in there every time I am nearby to see what other business I can give them! Kudos. read more

I have shopped at Modern hardware for over two decades for hardware for my old house and now my new house. They have a great selection. Their sales staff in all but the decorative hardware sections has always been friendly and helpful--very customer oriented. The last few years, their sales staff in their decorative hardware section for the most part has been disinterested and often quite dismissive--in other words rude. They are too busy caught up in their personal conversations. Today they took it to a new level, now they are disinterest, dismissive and sarcastic. Lovely attributes for sales people. I called the manager and asked for a return call to discuss the attitude of his employees, and did not receive a return call. I surmise that he suffers from the same disinterest as his employees. I support local businesses and do my best to shop in stores rather online. What differentiates a brick and mortar store from the Internet is personal face-to-face customer service. When that is gone--you might as well close your doors. read more
