I knew nothing about this place before arriving so I had absolutely no expectations. Five minutes into our tour, I realized that this place is gold. We were led through aisles and aisles and aisles of gently used donated materials. Here is a "short" list of some of the things that MFTA has for you. -Paper, zippers, beads, books, playbills, programs, posters, wood, full mannequin bodies and mannequin body parts, travel sized containers, glass containers, spools of thread, fabric, leather scraps, computers, printers, binders, tables, plastic containers, metal parts, labels....the list goes on for days. What's the catch?!? Not much actually. You do need a membership to reap the benefits, but if you are a teacher at a public school or work for a non-profit, everything is FREE! And don't you dare think that after a few teachers fill up cartloads of materials that you missed your chance. This place is enormous and donations are consistently flowing through their doors. Once you've filled up your cart (or your 5 carts), your only form of payment is a thank you. MFTA asks that you send a thank you to each company that you've "purchased" from. Just a few donors that Omar (our enthusiastic & informative tour guide) mentioned were Google, Macy's and Disney. Wait artists, there is more! If you create any form of art using MFTA's materials, they have a studio for you to work in right next to their warehouse of materials. Once your piece is complete, they will even showcase your work in their gallery. I don't know about you, but I'm amazed. Set up a school trip, rent a uhaul to stock up on supplies or just grab your toothbrush and move in. MFTA is an A+ in my book.

The shift was about 3 hours, the staff was super friendly, and the music made it really fun. You also get to take home up to 5 pounds of fabric after, which is such a cool perk if you're into anything crafty. A volunteer opportunity for everyone, no special skills required. Very well organized and run…read morefacility. They repurpose/upcyle fabric. You sort items into various categories according to their easy to follow charted system. I went with a friend and we worked alongside a few other volunteers. We used scissors to remove labels, zippers, buttons etc. It was interesting to see all the fabrics,sample clothing, trimmings etc. The staff is very welcoming and provide all the instructions. They are available throughout the shift to address any questions you have. At the end of the 3 hour shift you get yo take home 5 pounds of fabric of your choosing (free) . They have a shopping room that you can buy additional materials and trimmings too at 30% discount . The prices are way below traditional fabric shops. If you're a sew/craft lover you will be happy in the shopping room. If you're looking for a place to volunteer that offers a different experience then try a shift here. The shifts offered are 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm. It's located in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. It's a warehouse type atmosphere but downstairs you can find food and coffee etc so don't think it's a desolate area. I look forward to doing some more shifts here.

This is my honest review after attending COUPLES Night at Mugi Pottery…read more First, the studio was tall, well lit, ventilated, and we were greeted kindly by the 2 instructors. They checked our COVID vaccination card; process was smooth and seamless. For couples night, we each were given a large slab of clay, 2 rolling pins, and tools for only 1 person. There is NO wheel spinning and the clay comes out of the wash so you stay relatively clean (minus hands). I suggest you come with tight fitting clothing, hair up for long haired students, and sleeveless top so you can really get into the clay freely. I especially enjoyed that way the class was taught: it was done with several small demonstrations; after each demo we were released to do what was demonstrated, and came back together for the next demo. All the while the instructors were visiting each couple to help answer questions a give advice. I love this way so those who pick up the demo quick (me) can just go at it, while the slower people can get the extra help without bogging down the whole class. The entire class went for a little over 2hrs so there is certainly a time constraint. Overall, the experience was AMAZING! A wonderful way the spend the evening with a loved one. Since we typically like working with our hands and have done similar experiences before- we knew how work together and help each other out. So it's important to understand your partner's strengths and weaknesses so you'll have a happy time guiding and giving affirmation with the creations. I noticed several couple getting annoyed with each other and giving a "do whatever the f' you want" response- lol. PRO TIP: come in with something already conceptualized so you can go right to it. The slab was first roll to make a cylinder, and the creativity goes from there. Size, shape, and what you want to do will help save time towards your finished product (I came home afterwards only coming up with more I could have done to my creation!). Some made stemless mugs, jewelry box with a lid, luminary candle holders, jugs- so much you can do from the starting cylinder shape. Go on YouTube to get the technique in your head, check out Pinterest or print photos/ designs ahead of time- all of which would have helped me on my final project. Only thing I would have loved to see: since it was couples night- maybe some cut roses, maybe some wine, more tools, but overall- I HIGHLY recommend.

She gave us hand outs with everything we needed to know, took us through all supplies for basic sewing, taught us the parts of the sewing machine and how to thread a sewing machine. I didn't even know there was a whole process even before beginning to use one?! Lol. She went at our pace, helped us each time we made a mistake, all while having a regular conversation. None of us ever felt left behind or stressed. I was beyond excited when the class was finished. I bought some supplies from her store and even Diana's sewing book (which I highly recommend if you're dedicated). I can't wait to practice on this new hobby and make it my own! She goes over threading step by step and gives you some great techniques and advice to take home with you so that you can practice. The classes are very small, so if you have questions, she's available. The two hours flew by. I left the class feeling very confident in what I learned (a little too confident, telling people I can take on those mofos on Project Runway!) I can't wait to take another class.
