Horrible customer service. This is NOT a store and felt more like the owner's personal knitting club for her and her friends. Doors were locked despite being open. Quaint, step-down store. Selection of yarns are a bit pricey but you can get some rare materials that are hard to find. I don't personally knit, but I came in here looking for a gift for a friend. I have to let the word out that the kind shop owner who is a self-professed "former fashion desginer" has these BEAUTIFUL knitting bags with matching needle holders. She specially commissions someone in Boston who uses french tapestries to create these masterpieces. They are lovely and I would go back just to get one of these unique bags as a purse. read more

Rude elderly lady whom I assume was the owner. I went in to buy some knitting needles for a new project I was going to start. Because of her rude attitude towards me, I ended up leaving and not purchasing anything-even though I live close by. I don't know why she had this attitude. She had her makeup applied badly and was dressed shabby. Don't like to say rude things about people but I went in there, was friendly, nice, told her I was looking for bamboo needles and the size I wanted and her rudeness and tone she used really shocked me. I thought what is her problem? As I left I told her she got some bad reviews on YELP about her attitude and she would be getting one by me too. I ended up going to a place on the west side and 78th. Wandered in to check out the yarns as I heard there were some unusual ones to be found here. There is an amazing selection in this tiny slip of a shop. Beautiful yarns floor to ceiling, well organized, varied in weight, colors, mostly imported from Italy. A wall of pattern books and some some really cute baby sweater samples. Owner was welcoming and very helpful without hovering. She even sketched out a shawl and told me how much to cast on and decrease. When I saw a yarn I loved she offered to order it for me. I would give this shop no stars if that was possible. I was looking for a set of double pointed needles, and called ahead to see if they had them in stock. The woman (I'm guessing the owner) told me she had them. I told her I'd be in the next day, which was a Saturday. At about 4:15 in the afternoon, I walked into the store. The woman I had spoken to was standing at the register, and there was another woman talking to her. As I walked into the open store, the owner told me she was closed (note - the door was unlocked and the lights were on, and the sign on the door said that the shop was open until 5 pm on Saturday.) I started to tell her that I was the person who had called about the double pointed needles, but she cut me off and again told me that she was closed. She then told me to come back on Tuesday. I told her that I don't live in the city and just needed to purchase the double pointed needles, but she again said she was closed. Clearly, she has no sense of customer service. It would have taken less than five minutes to complete my transaction, but since she wouldn't sell me the needles, I will never go there again. My daughter lives right across the street, so I probably would have gone in to browse when I visit my daughter, but now I'll find other, more accommodating shops. I'm sure there are many who would love to have my business. read more

I love checking out yarn stores in different cities, and this one was just a delight! The owner Valeria was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I was interested in making a summer top and she gave me the pros and cons of different yarns. Then she drew a pattern for me and told me just how to make it. She also gave me her email address, and said if I went home and worked a gauge swatch, she'd be happy to write up more specific directions for my fit. This store is really annoying to try to shop in. There is always a group squeezed into the table which is squeezed into the store, so at first glance it seems like a friendly environment. Then you try to shop, but you're not really allowed to just shop on your own...the employees (owner?) ask every three seconds if they can help you. Stay away! I bought $100.00 worth of yarn in early August. As a beginner I asked the owner if she'd help me out with my baby blanket if I had a problem. She told me to come in any time and she'd be glad to help out. Well, I am almost done and had a question about what to do with the "tails". I went in (called first to alert her) and she did not want to know me. She was impatient, told me she wouldn't show me how to sew in tails unless I took a lesson, and responded to all my questions with caustic sarcasm. She lost a potential customer. I understood her not being able to show me how to sew in tails without a lesson, but couldn't put up with her sarcasm when I asked how to block organic yarn and received such an unpleasant answer. Lovely little knitting shop on the UES. Valeria was recommended to me by a friend so I decided to check out her shop. Wonderful place - I don't know what I would have done without her. I took a class with her and she was patient, encouraging and very interested in seeing me develop as a knitter. She is always eager to suggest new patterns and colors for different projects and can custom design, as well. The shop is not all that large so she is limited in the yarns that she can keep in stock. Not only does have magic hands and a heart of gold, she has a talent to attract interesting, talented women. I am so glad I stumbled upon Knitting 321 two years ago. Valeria, the owner, is wonderful. She is extremely knowledgable and is a fantastic teacher and designer. She gives private lessons in the mornings and is extremely patient with her students. I have become a much stronger knitter with her help and just finished an amazing cable knit sweater that she designed for me based upon a design we found online. In addition, she has a fantastic selection of premium yarns (no cheapo yarn here) and works with you to design your project. She is open 5 days a week (hours posted online and on the door) and has late hours on Tuesdays - which works out very well for me as I tend to work past 6pm most nights. Saturdays tend to be pretty busy and so, you might have to wait your turn to get Valeria's help (I went in recently with several questions on the sweater mentioned above and the store was very busy, she was more than happy to help and I understood I had to wait until the folks ahead of me were helped before she could turn her attention over to me). read more
