It's voted to be one of the toughest 9 hole courses in America. Well, after a pint of Guinness watching Scheffler win the 2025 BMW, talking to the proprietor Tom and peeking out of the cute bar, to the finishing holes, we decided to tackle this reputed course. The afternoon 9 hole round cost $40 walking. Walking up to the first green we saw a coyote rambling through the fairways. Good or bad omen, we would find out. At least it was not freezing or blowing too bad. T boxes were uneven, hard to see, and a bit rough. Lots of trees to consider and huge patches of carryover sand. Bunkers were not manicured. It's easy to top your ball in some of the patched fringe or tree-lined fairways. Overall it had nice views of McLaren Park, the Cow Palace and Visitacion Valley below. But a bit more maintenance on the fringes wouldn't do it harm. read more

Don't waste your money here! The course is in terrible shape--poorly maintained and incredibly dusty. Basic amenities like shoe and club cleaning are nonexistent, which is disappointing for a golf course at this price point. The staff (possibly the owner) was shockingly rude. I got absolutely wrecked on the course. Probably the worst round I played in a while. But the starter was great to chat with before my 8am round. The bar is neat too! You get some nice views of the bay. Just remember that if you can't read the greens, the balls will roll towards the Cow Palace! read more

This is a **gorgeous** golf course with a great "Every person" vibe. No golf polos or fancy golf club flexing here - just a perfect way to spend a casual, Sunday morning in beautiful SF Bay Area. Yeah, so the fairway is dusty in areas and not pristine, and there are no golf ball washing stands- but honestly, does it REALLY make a difference?!? The greens are well maintained and everyone is super civil and super nice. No pretensions, no aggressive players nipping at our heels. For a beginner or casual player this is a lovely course - a place to be outdoors, offline with family during quarantine. Booking online is super convenient, check-in is efficient by the affable and helpful Scott. This is a rugged, hilly, and difficult 9 hole course in McLaren park. My boys and I play it a ton (you can always get a tee time here the day before, even on weekends). We joke that their motto is "welcome to gleneagles, f_ck you". You'll see what I mean when you hit or hole 3*, a downhill par 4 that slopes steeply from right to left into visitation valley public housing. *I think. Or when you hit hole 6, a par 5 that seems to go on for miles. When you get around the dogleg bend you're treated to an uphill slope that makes this hole feel like 700 yards. Or when you finally hit the finish at hole 9-- you get a mean double tiered green that likes to spit your ball out to the fairway below as one last mean joke. They pretty much don't rent carts here, and one time the course was on fire because someone decided to play with M80s on the Visitation Valley side. But honestly it's really really pretty, a great price and a ton of fun. Scott, the guy that runs the clubhouse is super chill and occasionally gives you a deal on your second round of beers. I have been back numerous times since my first visit and have completely embraced this scruffy yet full bodied golf course as my home base. I read up on its history recently and all that Tom Hsieh has endured and want to thank you for not giving up on this little slice of peace. Ive watched this last year as it really began to flourish and now it fights with this water shortage I am humbled by your efforts. Tom has been quick to fix any problems and I owe him the most heart felt apology for my over zealous reviews. Now that I have gotten to know this place I understand that this is a labor of love for him and those who work hard to keep it going. Only two things about this course bring me back. The good greens and great combo 9/18 course with perfect tee options. Lil Oly. For that I'm 5 stars. I should be rating this course two stars maybe three, but you have to know this place to live it, and love it, and keep making turns. Not that many good scores shot here, unless you have some course knowledge like I do. Even then I'm on my toes at all times. My eyes are wide open out here... The place is a bit nippy and sometimes not as friendly as it should be. I mean, it's located in a generally bad area coming up actually, and the public relations at this course should be phenomenal, however it's just ok. Can't be too friendly, you know, they may want it for themselves. I would. Rough or no rough I'm still in... Played here in 90's first time, place has not changed a bit. Little rough here and there, does not drain with a sprinkle, and since it's still in SF they don't spray pesticides so weeds are what you play on. It's not grass. This place has every weed dating back to the stone ages, half the time thru the green playing the ball down is a bad option. Play the ball up and have a blast. Surely you will have just that. Pay attention to weather. This course plays easier when soft. Pins bite. Fast and firm you best have a clue out here. Pins rarely bite, and the ball rolls south most times and northward shots can be hit firmer. Usually. Some holes require deft touch. If you sit at the bar. The view is great. I have found the bartenders to be a bit slow though, they must be in shock when someone actually is there on a weekday. If the evolution ever takes place out there they could actually be something. Until then it looks like it's barely hanging on, and deserves more than that. 5 star greens, 5 star 9/18 hole course, 1-2 star fairways and around greens. read more

I find this golf course to be charming, challenging and beautiful. This is NOT a course if you've just started playing golf. This is a difficult course and if you hit the balls all over the place, the course will make you pay....in my opinion, that is a good thing. If you want an easy course, Mariners Point is probably the place for you. The greens are great. The fairway could use some love, but in these Covid days, I understand that all courses are under pressure. The staff is friendly and there are always tee times available. The course is a nice balance of family-friendly and challenging for the weekend-warrior dad. My daughter and I played nine eventful holes. Both my teenager and I enjoyed for different reasons. I loved that it was challenging and a beautiful course. She loved the chill vibe of the course (which was nice because we may have set a record for lost balls). Before we even tee'd off, the manager kindly explained how to approach some of the tougher holes. The course itself was very pretty, and had some terrific views. I love the elevation changes and the tiny greens. Without getting muni funds, Gleneagles has kept up a fun and challenging 9 hole course. I've played here 5 times or so during the pandemic rain or shine, here's what's resonating for me: - Interesting slopes throughout the course, adding a little challenge with few flat lies. Bombing downhill on hole 3 and climbing back up on hole 9 are particularly memorable. - Narrow fairways - lined with beautiful trees, some dry patches. - I repeat. Don't miss the fairway even if it builds character. - Nice greens. The owner and community sank quite a bit of $$$,$$$ and time to keep these nice. - Enjoy the views. Kind of like a beautiful park, don't expect a country club. - Really empty on weekdays, fills up on weekends. - Friendly locals - After you play 9, it's a nice discounted rate to do the full 18 - Food and drink are light, but enjoy a hot dog and a beer or Gatorade after your workout. Bashing through the rough, on a mud-dy, sul-len day... O'er the fields we go, Crying all the way! Okay, it wasn't THAT bad, but I was told I was not allowed to demonstrate any drama on the course, so it's comin' out here! This course plays like the "Western--the Good, the Bad and The Ugly". It is a strange juxtaposition of epic with horrendous. The Good. It's cheap. C'mon--green fees of $25 for 9 holes ($28 for another go-around for a total of 18 butt-spankin' holes), even less with a resident card/senior discount?!! The guests who come here are more laid back and not persnickety about course rules--Phhfftsheah! The course manager, Brandon, is cool--he told us as we walked off to "do our part and water the trees frequently!" The bar is REALLY cool with inexpensive drinks. The manager has allocated resources to maintaining the highest priority areas of the course--greens, parts of fairways you are supposed to reach with each stroke (think green islands) and Tee Offs. The Bad. The course is really is a booger at places! The fairways are narrow and break steeply so that your ball will roll to one side. The rough is ball ingesting and nigh impossible to search through. There are parts that are muddy that will soil your buggy, shoes, and club (and pants if you send a shot into the rough). The Tee-offs are inconsistently marked and sometimes located in counter-intuitive places. We tee'd off one hole, walked 20 yards and discovered the real tee off for it... Weird. The Ugly. The aeration holes and patching mesh on the green kicks and skews the putt like a pinball machine flapper. The brown patches of fairway (which I visited often in my noobness) are brutal because there is.no.green.grass for your next shot. My kind uncle kept reminding me I could move the ball in a one foot radius 'for improvement'... Let's review my options: how about that glob of mud, or sundried weed, maybe that rock perch...? And, just when you thought you made it home on the 9th, the green there is a wicked ski-slope--positioned strategically as entertainment for those who have gone before to heckle you as the ball is putted haplessly from one end of the green to the other. All said, it is a low-key place for me to bash the ball around without too much recourse :) For that, I am a fan--4 stars! read more

This place is a joke. I feel it's a poor man's golf course, or maybe an old rundown golf course that you'd expect to stumble on and no one is there or maintains it. I feel it's a disgrace to the gentleman's game of golf. The staff is questionable. Nothing was ready when we got there. We wanted to rent clubs and they only had ONE bag of clubs for the two of us, so we had to split it. And it was an incomplete set of clubs (we were missing a 5 iron). The clubs were a little dirty and scratched up. They also had no carts for us that were ready to go or charged. Really horrible service. We made the most of the situation but really, take your money elsewhere. Not a classy establishment. read more

It's a tough course yes, which I'm fine with, but after the heavy 2023 rains, the course and pathways are damaged and are exceptionally more difficult to get around as you climb through the course. The real reason for low rating is the poor management of the course. The seams of their operation shows with their use an offshore booking company for handling reservations when you call for a tee time. I called and booked a 12:50 reservation yesterday and made sure that that was the exact time. When I arrived with my elderly father, one of the gruff older staff member immediately yelled at us saying that we were 20 min late for our 12:30 reservation. His tone was unnecessarily confrontational and when we repeatedly told him the time that we booked he continued to scream, "Well, the computer says 12:30!" This atmosphere is unfortunate. They should examine every touchpoint with how they engage with their customers, and ultimately, evolve the business into an experience that maps to other modern courses. read more

Wow! I am a beginner golfer who started playing with my 15 year old son in April, 2020 as we were desperate for any outdoor activity during this pandemic. We have mostly visited Golden Gate golf course but I kept hearing about Gleneagles (usually along the lines of "you'll either love it or hate it" and "crazy difficult"). I had a tee time for Oct. 7th @ 10 a.m., Gleneagles G.C., McLaren Park. I had to prepay for the reservation $140. I had to cancel due to foursome problems and I called in to cancel Oct. 6th @9:15'ish. "No refunds or rainchecks for any reason inside of 24 hours before your scheduled tee time. Thank you." Is the rule per Tom Hseigh, owner/operator. I received a confirmation of my cancellation dated 10/6 @ 9:21 a.m pursuant to the 24 hour cancellation rule. I was told my $140 will be returned within 3-5 business days. Today is the 8th business day from Oct. 6, the date of the cancellation. I called Gleneagles G.C. re my refund to my credit card and was told to contact Tom Hseigh, owner/operator and Gleneagle personnel onsite could not take care of refunds. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS and poor business practice by Gleneagles. I wouldn't recommend booking tee times at Gleneagles for various reasons including poor business practice for refunds and course conditions. I was advised by a neighborof Gleneagle Golf Course, who recently played there, the course is a "goat pasture" and not taken care of and the rave reviews of the past of fast greens and difficult course, are just that, "past raves" no longer applicable The shoddy conditions reflect the equally shoddy business practices of Gleneagles; don't do business with them, you'll regret every minute of it. Lee Trevino once called this the best 9-hole test in golf. My son and friend wanted to play here. I told him I'd played here once but the kids from the projects on the other side of the chain link fence heckled us the whole time and someone had had a fire on the 8th/17th green. So I don't think he was expecting much when we got there. You literally have to drive through the projects to get there. There was a couch in the middle of the road that we had to avoid! The pub is still there but I don't think it is as good as the one that used to be there. If you fancy yourself a true golfer who isnt phased by small undulating greens and the lack of country club amenities, then check it out! Not for the faint of heart! read more

I play a lot of nice courses, so I can understand where some of the bad reviews are coming from, but cmon... for the price, Gleneagles is a steal. You want super well manicured tee boxes and premium amenities? Then this place ain't for you. But if you're looking for some rough and rugged target golf with fairly solid bentgrass greens all at a decent price, then I think Gleneagles won't disappoint. Yes, there are brown patches of dirt and dead grass in some areas, but you'll only end up in those areas if you suck. Lol. Hit the ball well and you should end up on the green stuff. I showed up a little early for my 8:40am tee time. There's no driving range and other than the small putting green, there's no practice area to really "warm up, " so I did the next best thing and grabbed an Irish coffee from the bar. The bartender (who I'm guessing might also be the owner?) was friendly and got me checked in. The weather was nice and the golf wasn't half bad, so I'd say my outing at Gleneagles was a success. read more

Why is this place so cheap? Because you need the extra money to finance your balls. Bring extra balls, and perhaps paint those balls bright pink! A few of our best drives, right down the middle and a decent amount of distance, resulted in lost balls, either because they blended in with the white flowers or got lost in the thick grass. There are all sorts of hidden ditches, dirt piles, and holes right in the middle of the fairways for balls to hide. The fairways aren't mowed down low enough (maybe because it's been too wet, but it was definitely dry today - no mud at all), and on some holes, all rough right beyond the tee box (yeah, I had some bad shots, admittedly).The fairways definitely needs to be kept up better, because hitting a decent drive but losing the ball in plain sight is way too frustrating. Also, it was really strange that we were required to wear real golf shoes for the sake of the course's condition, when it was pretty bad before we got there, from no fault of some shoes. However, the greens were in pretty good condition, and the people working here were really nice, so I've got to give some credit for that. The comments from other Yelpers about the ghetto aspect to this place is really undeserved and disheartening. It's not dangerous or ugly there (well, the sign needs some work...http://tinyurl.com/4ya6vhd), and the comments about only a fence separating the course from the projects makes the residents of the neighborhood sound like zoo animals, not people. Fences typically delineate property lines, and I've seen plenty of them at golf courses, so I wouldn't be concerned. read more

Celebrated a break in the oppressive smoky air with my first nine holes at Gleneagles. The tee sheet was essentially empty; I showed up half an hour early and was grouped with a regular and another first-timer. As other reviews have mentioned, the course isn't in optimal shape--I found a recent interview with the management company owner who said that he had to lay off all but one of his employees at the beginning of shelter-in-place. Greens had just been aerated two days prior, and were playing rather slow with the morning dew and an annoying layer of sand. I was rather glad to be paired with a regular, because the course is severely lacking in signage. Even after cutting major slack for the state of the grounds--which I'm sure will only get better now that the course is producing revenue again--the place feels a little rough-and-tumble. Our regular said one cause of the poor fairways was a city prohibition on using recycled water. If this is true, it's a shame, because I had the least fun in my round trying to free my ball from the hard, rutted clay that sat where the rough should be. On the flip side, it's convenient when a shot straight into the bunker bounces three feet in the air and lands on the fringe. read more

I ended up booking a tee time here on a Saturday, but on Friday I tried to cancel due to rain the following day (buddy I'm golfing with just had a hip replacement) and they refused to offer a refund or credit for my tee time, but instead only offered to reschedule even though I explained to them that I'm from out of town cannot make my rescheduled tee time. I don't know why this place still exists. The course is horrible, like you are playing on sand / beaches. Google it yourself the condition probably barely improved (there are few youtube videos for this location with 'June 2014' title). Price they charge I would consider too high consider other courses in the area are in much much better condition, some even charge more than 1/2 the price yet you get a lot better condition. I have not seen any golf course in such poor condition. I will stay away from GlenEagles Golf Course San Francisco and go elsewhere. I don't get this place at all. It's $5 cheaper than Harding, but the condition of the course is terrible. No sign at each tee, fareway is half dirt and half grass. On top of that, it shares a disc / frisbee golf course. So there are people constantly walk on the same course. The course is difficult, rough and woody areas all around. So if you miss the fare way, say bye bye to your ball. So if you want to get out to play, then have low expectations, bring plenty of balls, and be patient on the course with your own self and other people. But if you want a golf course that is in decent shape, and not 4-5 people constantly walking and talking around you, then go to another city course. By the way, they do sell alcohol. I saw plenty of empty beer cans along the way, folks smoking in the woods. And the party before us had a boom box playing music. None of it bothered me. But it definitely has a different vibe. read more

This course is in a very bad neighborhood, is hard to find and is in extremely poor condition, and the atmosphere in and around the "clubhouse" is very strange. Add some ridiculous rules such as anybody who goes on the course whether they are playing golf or not must pay the green fee AND rent clubs if he/she doesn't have them. What? This is such a fantastic course. If you shoot below 90 for 18 holes, it's a great challenge. It takes many rounds to learn the bounces on some of the approach shots (especially on #1, 7, 8, & 9). The staff is great--very fun people. The Killer B's (Brad, Brian, and Brandon) totally rock and pour awesome drinks! They keep the clubhouse fun and lively. The one drawback is the owner, Tom. Whenever he's on the premises, everyone is on edge--not just the staff, but also, the regulars, like myself. And, even if he's not actually there, they are constantly worried about what he might think over things that are really nothing at most all golf courses I've gone to. I really wish Tom would just put some faith in his hardworking staff and let them just do their jobs. read more

Course is outstanding and has a mom and pop charm. I was able to take my time and enjoy the beautiful scenery-- multiple bay views. Host was very friendly, helpful, and unintimidating. Play here occasionally on the weekends, course has been more difficult in this year of COVID (same situation at some other places and I'll explain). I mean, I come out here and it's like taking almost 3 hours to finish a round. Basically, I think there are a lot of neophytes just trying to find some way to have fun and though I certainly can't blame them, the flow of play has become disrupted for the rest of us. In addition, you see some "golfers" who haven't put in the time to learn the rules of golf and proper etiquette and that's not to mention some "players" who obviously don't give a rat's butt about how they behave and just want to be able to tell their friends they went "golfing". On the plus side, the course is definitely in better shape than I've seen it in years, especially the bunkers. Last but not least, kudos to the staff... they're personable and service is great. read more
