I had a subpar experience at subpar where we held a little boys birthday party. It all started out OK. We arrived and the young people running the place hosted our group the best they could. Most eye incredibly kind and the mini golf course looked really cool with all of the San Francisco landmarks built in. We had reserved a small narrow room with a lovely view of the bay. The room has one long table with chairs and nothing else in it. There was no place for gifts or for the cake, which was odd to me. We met with the host (who we later learned was the manager) and reviewed the schedule for our group. We had originally reserved the space from 2-4pm but paid for an additional half hour to extend the pay until 4:30pm. We planned to play mini golf first, then eat, then play in the arcade for the last half hour. We went over this schedule with our host when we first arrived and they confirmed our plan. The boys enjoyed the competition of mini golf and the food (chicken tenders, fries, veggie egg rolls, wings and mozzarella sticks) was perfect for that age group. Where everything went horribly wrong is when the boys tried to use their unlimited arcade play cards. We actually went to the arcade ahead of schedule just after 3:45 and their cards already didn't work. They read "low balance" and wouldn't operate games. We started collecting them and asking the staff for help to get them fixed. None of the staff understood what was wrong or how to fix it. After about 10 minutes of confusion someone got the manager, a young woman named Diana. She took the stack of non- working cards and said that she would fix it . She disappeared into a back room for about 15 minutes. We waited with the gaggle of impatient little boys surrounding us, wanting to get back to play. When she came back we were excited and hopeful that she had fixed the problem so we could get the last 10 minutes (at this point) of arcade play, but instead she came out with a print out of the email thread from a week prior showing where it said, in fine print, that game play would end at 4pm even though we had paid extra for the additional half hour. I was livid that this manager would rather waste more of our time -- that should have been a celebration -- waiting for her to print out and highlight the single line we should've remembered that our arcade play time would end at 4pm. Yes, we didn't read the fine print, but what really makes me angry about this situation is that we went over the schedule together at the start of the party and told her that we wouldn't even head towards the arcade until 4pm. That would've been the best time to remind someone that the arcade play ended at 4pm! Not when there is an rambunctious pack of 11 year old bouncing around the arcade and waiting for their arcade play cards. It blows my mind that she chose to print out the multi page email thread rather than just giving us another 15-20 minutes of game play. We all knew we had to leave at 4:30pm. It was a really awful way to end what should have been a fun party and left a really bitter taste in our mouths. I mentioned to the manager that she should consider updating the training so that all hosts understood they should review the schedule AND give reminders if there are any hard stops, and she rolled her eyes at me. That really showed me how much she did not care about customer service. Maybe she was having a hard day and we were the last straw, but it was a really awful experience and an awful way to end a day that should have been fun. read more

The location is great and easy to get to, and the price is fairly reasonable for a mini golf activity in San Francisco. One fun aspect of the course is the props--many of the holes feature miniature versions of well-known San Francisco landmarks, which adds a bit of local character and makes the course visually interesting at first. However, the space itself feels extremely small and cramped. Everything is packed into a tight indoor area, and it quickly becomes crowded. Even though we made a reservation for a specific time slot, multiple parties were apparently scheduled to start at the same time. This caused long wait times at nearly every hole because groups were constantly backed up. It made the reservation feel pointless since choosing a time slot didn't actually help manage the crowd. Because groups were stacked up behind us, we also felt rushed the entire time. Instead of enjoying the game, it felt like we had to hurry just to keep the line moving. Overall, despite the fun San Francisco landmark theme and decent pricing, the cramped space and poorly managed reservation system made the experience frustrating. Due to the long wait times, rushed atmosphere, and repetitive course design, I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

A super cute date night spot that should be talked about more. It's a small course but the architecture is all based on San Francisco icons. It can definitely be a little hard to focus on playing the game because everything is so aesthetically pleasing that you want a picture or video of everything. Not only is there mini golf but there is also a boba shop that isn't half bad. Staff is also super friendly when explaining the rules and pricing. An extra bonus is that it's in the middle of ghiradelli square so there's plenty of things to do before or after your round of mini golf. read more

We had a team building event at Subpar Miniature Golf in Ghirardelli Square and we all had a blast. Everything about this place seemed to go perfectly. We had a room set up for our event, but everyone was playing mini golf, laughing and screaming at the great fun. There was a mini bar area set up, which had a pretty good draft beer selection. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and sharable plates that everyone seemed to enjoy. The view from the private room was incredible, welcome to SF and our postcard views. Service was attentive and everyone was really nice and accommodating. And last but certainly not the least impressive thing was the SF city landmarks and buildings as each hole design - It's so cool. Really fun and cute mini golf spot in Ghirardelli Square! The location is great and each station is designed to represent landmarks around San Francisco which is such a great unique touch. It's a relatively simple game, approachable for first-timers but there can be a wait for each hole depending on how busy the place gets. We came to Subpar after a layover in San Francisco and wanted to check out Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf; we didn't have enough time to explore everything but we were able to see everything from the windows of Subpar located in Ghirardelli square which has great restaurants, breweries, and Ghirardelli store. You can book online. We had chicken nuggets and a beer and it was great! Service was great very busy though they favor customers that book slot online, then walk ins are allowed but only if the holes are moving. read more

If you're in San Francisco and planning to visit Ghirardelli Square, set aside an extra 45 minutes to check out this mini golf spot--it's such a fun experience! Although the holes weren't the most innovative or extravagantly designed, the $14 price tag was extremely reasonable for the 1.5 hour fun my party had. A reservation was required and my time slot unfortunately didn't qualify for the glow in the dark option. There were complementary lockers near the entrance. Upon checking in, we were able to purchase boba, beer and fried appetizers. Strangely we didn't receive a receipt so we awkwardly stood near the boba stand until we saw something that resembled our order. Each hole had a cup holder and stand for the beverages and food. Each hole included a recreation of a famous SF attraction. Some paths were creative but I wished more of the routes weren't so straight forward and similar to each other. We were still playing when they shifted to the glow in the dark format. While the neon lights and music created a fun ambiance, it was difficult to play with the standard golf set up. Players with darker golf balls had difficulty tracking their ball as a result. I hope Subpar will revamp their courses and introduce more glow in the dark elements in the future. Besides the occasionally colorful light, it would be cooler to outline the attraction with glow in the dark paint. Definitely worth checking out at least once. 18-hole miniature golf place highlighting iconic landmarks in SF. And for only $14! Reservations recommended, but we got lucky and were able to snag a reservation. They also serve food, beer, wine, and some non-alcoholic refreshments, including boba! I think my only safety concern was that there should be some protective barrier at the end of the Sutro Tower course. One other group and ours ended up with the ball flying off course and into the walkway area. Such a cute and fun mini golf course! I loved seeing the little landmarks that represent San Francisco - what a cute idea. This place is reservation only I believe, which helps limit larger crowds and allows for a fun, non-rushed pace. Upon arrival, you'll see inside they have a drink/snack area which is great if you want to grab a little drink and bite while playing. Service is what you'd expect, nothing crazy haha. I'd recommend coming here with family, friends, on a date, literally anyone. So cool that during some of the holes you can look outside and see the view of the water. You're getting such a great experience here, and afterwards you can get ice cream from Ghirardelli (because, duh) or walk around. It's a short distance from Pier 39, so this is literally a great day trip activity! Won't spoil with pictures but just know you'll have so much fun as many of these holes are tricky and will have you laughing with company! read more

This place is very cool with great holes and is clean, HOWEVER, they allow to many large groups and people and you are waiting ten minutes between holes. The party in front of of my kids was literally just hanging out and eating food , I complained, they said something to them and they didn't follow up and they kept doing it. I told my kids to skip ahead, but they ended up leaving three holes before the end because there was so many large groups and it was taking forever and that's not fun. Came in a little after 6. Really great prices for a round of mini golf! We were greet warmly by the girl at the register. Even the girl that served the beer at the little bar was bubbly also. I really liked the themes that they had at this location compared to other mini golf places. It's may be a bit small but there are a lot of sights to see! I like how they have lockers in the front of you don't want to carry your purse. They even have cupholders for your drinks while you play! I'll be coming back for more rounds. My partner wanted to do an activity over the weekend, and I came across this venue while researching. It's tucked away in Ghirardelli Square, and the space isn't the biggest. However, they do a good job optimizing the space to place 18 holes. For what it is and how much you pay, my partner and I enjoyed ourselves. Most of the holes had those "high-risk, high-reward" opportunities, which were fun to attempt. The remaining holes were pretty straightforward. The only downside is that, depending on the time of day, it can take a while to play the full 18 holes. My partner and I skipped around to avoid the waiting queue for as many holes as we could. The place is clean and offers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Subpar also has amazing views of Alcatraz. We had a great time and afterwards we went for dinner and dessert. There are plenty of choices in the immediate area. This is a fun activity for family, dates, or even solo. My only advice is that it's popular so make reservations online. Excellent for kids. When you walk in, you see lots of families and younger couples all just having a good time. I've been here a few times to take large groups of teenagers, and they always love it. This course has cute ways to integrate SF landmarks and neighborhoods. There's a snack bar so you can also snack on fried things and drink some boba while putting. We came on a Friday morning, right when they opened around 11:15am and it was nice and empty! Our 5 year old is into golf right now so how fun was it for him to do it in real life. It wasn't too expensive but still adds up for a family LOL. This would be fun for adults since you can eat and drink while you play. The courses were all super fun and it was fun trying to tell our son that these were SF locations! We went through it all fairly quickly. Maybe 30-40 mins. Sadly he wanted to do it all AGAIN. but sorry little man, we weren't going to pay again haha. Fun, clean and great location to eat and walk around afterwards. Visited Subpar Miniature Golf on a Monday night around 7:30pm with a group of three. Although reservations are recommended, we were able to walk in without any delays. I'm addition to mini golfing, you can also purchase beer, boba, and bites that you can bring into the course with you. The course itself consisted of 18 holes, that took about 30-40 min to go through. While it was an enjoyable experience with friends, I do think the courses could be a bit more creative. Compared to a couple other mini golf spots in SF where the designs are built into the course itself and provide a challenged the designs here were more for show on the course and less part of the course itself. On that note, Subpar is cheaper than some other locations in SF. It's also in a cool location at Ghirardelli Square, with a lot of options for shopping and food nearby. This is my favorite mini golf spot in San Francisco! First off, it's located in Ghiradelli Square in Fisherman's Wharf and has an amazing view of the bay. Visited for the first time this weekend and honestly this was the most fun I've had mini-golfing! Located in Ghiradelli Square, Subpar Miniature Golf has a ton of San Francisco-inspired courses. I believe there's about 18 holes made to last you about an hour there. My boyfriend and I visited and for two, it was $24 ($12 each). In order to visit though, you have to have a reservation in advance that you can book on their website. Reservations are spaced out every 5 minutes, which is really nice since it helps the area not get too crowded. My favorite course was the Golden Gate Bridge! The loop-de-loops were really fun. All of the courses were so beautifully made and creative. They also sell snacks and boba drinks here too. Overall, it was a pretty solid place for it's price and we enjoyed every bit of it! It does get a bit slow especially when you're waiting on larger groups, but I appreciated how you're able to skip courses here and there so you don't have to wait for your turn. read more

Overall experience at Subpar was great! We booked a tee time for 4 and had a smooth check-in process. Their website was very easy to use and made it simple to book in advance. We booked the earlier in the morning for the same day (Sunday) and had no issues. Very reasonable prices at $14/adult ($56 for a group of 4)! The course consisted of 18 holes and we loved the creativity and SF theme throughout the course! Each hole was well-designed and was very artsy. It really made the game very, very fun to play. I went with family, but this would be great for any age range! Since this is indoor, the whole space is smaller than an outdoor mini golf place, and is naturally much easier. The holes were mostly par 2 to par 4, meaning that on average, you should make the ball in 2 to 4 attempts. My group of 4 spun through the course in about an hour although we had a limit of 90 min (more than ample time). Since the course was pretty easy, I'd only probably do it a few times. We especially loved the useful stands at each hole which were perfect for putting water bottles, clubs, balls, and the scorecard. And an additional stand to place jackets and small purses. This was a really considerate touch to the place! This is a really fun course and I highly recommend it! Would be a great spot for a birthday group, group of friends, or a date. Subpar Mini Golf in SF is pretty cool. I used to go the Alameda location years ago, and this one is definitely more spacious with larger structures for the various holes, and the theme is focused on SF landmarks and places of interest, from Alcatraz to the Castro District (yes, not just the theatre, but the neighborhood/shops too). The quality is definitely better than the Alameda location, but it doesn't compare to the more intricate and complex holes at other places that include more moving parts and/or more detailed designs. Some of the props, I feel like I could have painted myself, that's how simple it is. And there aren't a lot of obstacles, so unless you're a child or novice, most of the holes may not be challenging enough to keep you entertained, mostly level surface, and again without moving parts. That being said, I love the representation of SF's pride and history, and I especially liked the Lombard Street hole (designed after the famous crooked street attraction). And the ball park hole (labeled AT&T Park) is a pretty unique hole I've never seen before. Also the condition of the the turf is near flawless, and there are cup holders at every station. Other perks... this place wasn't crazy busy on a Saturday evening, and didn't feel overcrowded or have unreasonable wait times. Plus they take reservations online (like every 5 minutes). They also have lockers and a small drink/snack bar, as well as a wonderful location inside Ghirardelli Square, with lots of great options for food/chocolate/dessert before or after your mini-golf session. The service was minimal but satisfactory. We just walked in, told the worker we had a reservation, he checked us in, and we got our balls and golf clubs and proceeded to Hole #1. Nothing else was needed, we were free to putt on our own time and pace, but of course be courteous of others. read more

It was full but it wasn't too crowded. Never felt like anyone was waiting on me, and I was barely waiting on the people ahead of us. Safe even though it was cramped. They have barriers up to help prevent you from smacking someone else with the ball. Should definitely at least check it out once if you're in the area. Nice colored balls with a handy clipboard and pen (with it's own pen holder). Good location at Ghirardelli Square with a bunch of other places to visit and things to do around the area. The course consists of 18 holes and is reasonably priced at $28 for 2 players.
