Everything in this store seems a bit overpriced but the location near Washington Square Park cannot be beat. If everything were a bit less pricey, Coit would earn four stars from me! Coit Liquor sells wine, beer, and, of course, liquor. They'll brown bag your tall glass beer for you too so that you can enjoy it in the park on a nice day! So many reasons I love this place. Even better now that they put in a wine bar for tastings AND that they deliver. If you work close to the area, give them a call on a friday and wind down a rough week at the office. As someone mentioned they are not pushy. They are friendly, kind, and know their stuff. If you tell them your menu they will offer an excellent pairing. They even have bread and cheese if you're just picking up a cold beverage to drink in the park. Bonus, they allow dogs in the store which is perfect for when i'm walking the mutt and picking up a bottle for dinner. EDIT: We worked with Tim to order wine for our wedding rehersal dinner and ceremony. First we chatted with him about what we wanted and in a few days we scheduled a tasting. At the tasting we were thrilled to see many options in our price range and he was very patient as we tried and tried and in helping us decide how much to buy. Once we selected, they drew up an estimate that was clear and easy to work off of. They gave us a case discount and worked with me to get it all paid for. Great wines, good deals, and friendly staff. I cannot ask for a better liquor store in my neighborhood that have tons of wines, beers and other alcoholic beverages to choose from. The reason why I love Coit Liquor is because it's the only place in the city where I can find the best Lambrusco (a naturally carbonated semi-sweet red wine) ever -- the Lo Duca Reggiano Lambrusco! The roommate and I can easily drink one bottle each anytime. For her birthday a few weeks ago, we bought a case (12 bottles) which was just under $100. Everyone at the party who drank it enjoyed it. We now have a few of our friends hooked on it :-)! The staff are very helpful and the one working that specific day even offered to carry my case order home for me since I only live a few blocks away. A well-maintained and stocked liquor store, and am sure they need to make a go of things after moving from their old location post-fire. That said, overpriced on just about every front and compared to most anywhere you'd buy liquor, save the local bodegas. As example, a bottle of Glemorangie Original scotch that goes for $28.99 at Safeway is $52 at Coit. That's quite the premium to pay for the luxury of using a local establishment. read more

Coit Liquor is a welcome alternative to the trashy, poorly stocked liquor stores around Broadway or further up Columbus. I'm sure most of the people who hang out around Broadway and Columbus don't care about high point beers and are more than happy to waste money on whatever crappy beer is cheapest. But those places are last resorts to me. Coit has a small, but very well-selected variety of craft, belgian, and other cool beers. Most importantly (at least right now), they have Pliny. I was buying this at Whole Foods for a while but then they stopped carrying it. Pliny the elder always makes for a good time. If you're into wine, this place has a huge selection. What a great find next to Washington Square Park. Decided to stop by here after dinner and enjoyed their collection. This is not your typical "run down" corner liquor store. The store is very clean and organized. They have a great collection of wine and whisky. Their beer selection isn't as extensive, but you'll still find some great microbrews (such as Russian River). The name Coit Liquor does not even begin to describe everything that this place is. And while I'm going to try to do it justice in this review, I can't promise I'll be able to - just promise me you'll go in and check it out. So, I walked in Sunday afternoon and literally stumbled out Sunday night - how, you might ask, did I spend over three hours in a liquor store?!! Here's how, as broken down by UF&C: Useful facts: ----------------- Their wine tasting - yes, it's a liquor store but it has a great little area for hanging out and tasting wine - works like so: you pick any bottle from their huge selection, and you get two generous glasses for half the price of the bottle. If you think about it, you're getting wine at retail prices, but wine bar (or better) atmospheres. Plus, everyone on their staff KNOWS wine. Tell them what you like, and they'll have a great recommendation. I went there on Sunday and they had me hard core craving a glass of wine last night. Good thing it's on my bus route home! A great wine is like a great woman, always intoxicating, ever surprising, and only getting better with age. This is the only place if you want to buy fine wine. They have decent prices, great service, and excellent selections of wines. They are well knowledgeable in the products they carry. Delivery? YES, saves me from driving to Napa Valley and buying wine even though I love going to Napa. I do not understand why they call this place Coit Liquor. They should really call it Coit We Have Such a Kick Ass Selection of Wines That You Don't Need Liquor. But, that would just be an incredibly long name then, wouldn't it? Anyhow, when I lived a mere two blocks from Cost Plus (another great place to pick up some well priced better known "basics") I never minded walking the extra few blocks to Coit for something unique. They carry wines from several countries and regions, and plenty of them. Now that I no longer live in the neighborhood I feel a bit empty inside, and not nearly as slick as I used to feel with my wine collection. Now for the most important reason for my love of this place. Here it goes....I do not know crap about Italian wines. So, I rely on someone else in this category to impress people with the great Italian wines "I" have picked out. Coit has always been this store for me. They will not hesitate to tell me when I have chosen something that is not worth the money, or when something is the deal of the century. I have never been disappointed with their recommendations. If you like wine, or if you just need people to think you know what the hell you are doing when picking out a bottle, check this place out. It is well worth the trip. read more

The "Under New Management" Coit Liquor appears to be in very good hands, I'm happy to report. I stopped by today because I had a hankering for a Manhattan today. The new owner, Shadi, was tending to the inventory while training up a new hire. We got to talking about all aspects of the new business from the remodel to last weekend's mysterious run on French wine. He's a very knowledgeable man who is eager to listen to his customers. Coit Liquor carries more fine liquors than its previous incarnation, which focused largely on wine. I'm glad to see a solid selection of single malt scotches and some fine gins for your cabinet at home. They still have plenty of wine for that dinner party around the corner and twelve-packs of beer for the blanket party going on in Washington Park across the street. They're still fine-tuning the selection and eager to get customer feedback. It will be great watching this new neighborhood addition grow. read more

After dinner with my stunning co-worker Emi, she was demanding wine! We didn't even bother to look on Yelp. Instead we wandered into the nearest place with LIQUOR hung over the door, and serendipity was on our side. After roaming about the clean, well-stocked store, my co-worker was about to give up on her quest. Until, assistance arrived. After engaging in some amusing banter, we left the store with two fine, reasonably priced reds, and as we were jumping into the cab, our wine helper came running out! Apparently, she had purchased the wrong model of wine stopper, and he came to give us one that would be the right fit. I was down right amazed at such caliber of service, and given that there were plenty of bottles of wine under $20, apparently such charming curbside service does not come at a extra cost. CHEERS! This liquor store has pocket size liquor. I wanted some vodka. There were 4 sizes to choose from. I got just enough to pour into my cranberry juice and get a little buzz! The hubs and I decided to be a bit "street" and drink and walk around North Beach. The store has a wide range of liquor- whiskey, wine, vodka. You name it they probably got it. You can also get typical liquor store items such as snacks, non alcoholic drinks and cigars just to name a few. The worker that helped us was a nice fellow. Once upon a time there were four young twenty-somethings who wanted to have a girls' night out. So they ordered a pizza and decided to buy a fifth of cheap liquor to pre-party. So the four happy girls ventured to Coit Liquor, a nice-looking liquor store with a respectable wine selection. As they collectively paid for the gin and tonic waters, they chatted with the gregarious, hilarious shop manager, Tim. He offered them a deal they found difficult to refuse: he gives them wine to drink while they stand in the window and "snag customers." Tim is the man! So after a really shitty...and I mean shiiiiitaaaay day and now early evening in North Beach that included us getting forced out of Sotto Mare by a real piece of work, my friend Audrey suggested we come here for some vino lovin. At this point I honestly wasn't expecting much and my mood was about as foul as they come, but because I am a wine ho, well, I'm not one to turn down a glass and so I agreed. When we walked in, it looked like any liquor store. There was tons of wine, some hard liquors and then there was a little standing room only area and Tim appeared with two glasses. Ahh yes, a man who gets me :) He asked how our day was and we both let out pretty battered and beaten sighs to which he responded, "That bad huh? Well, let's take care of that." He poured our first glass and we sipped it and looked out the window and silently judged people. Hey, what else do you do while sipping wine? Talk? Sheesh. After finishing that wine, we walked back over to the register and were quickly shooed away and told we were bad. Oooh, you know it. He then sauntered back over and poured us another glass and as he was taking my glass, I went into my normal, "I want a full bodied, kick in the pants wine..." schpeal to which he shushed me and said, "Now, now, now, you can't rush into that, this is foreplay." I love this man. We then finished our glass and the restaurant called us for our reservation and we had to head out, which is a shame, because I could have easily spent a few more tastes worth here. As we were paying, he offered us up a glass of something special. Apparently, it's a house made blend in the Pinot Noir family and it was so tasty. I don't normally like Pinot Noirs, but this was a nice exception and something I would definitely purchase a bottle of. i will definitely be back again and hopefully I will be in a muuuuuch better mood. I had heard so much about Coit from my colleagues at work but only got around to going there this Friday. If you're up in North Beach, I'd recommend stopping in here, well of course to buy some wine, but even better to enjoy a wine tasting. The staff is pretty chill, ready to offer up suggestions to fit your price range, and the wine selection itself is pretty well thought out (there is also some booze and beer as well). The cool thing is that any bottle you want to try, they'll open up and you can taste (you pay a $5 tasting fee but they work it so it's still a deal). The "tasting room" overlooks Washington Square Park, which offers up some nice views of people coming and going, while you sip. My advice, taste a wine or two as your happy hour, then buy a bottle and bring it to dinner (here again, the staff is very adept at picking wines to go with your meal, be it Italian or something else). read more

I love you dad, but I am not buying you that tiny bottle of Louis the XIII. A tiny 50 ML bottle of Remy Martin caught my eye. My first thought, "Oh cool! this would make a great stocking stuffer for my dad!" I figured that it was only a shot and might set me back $50 or 'Gasp' $75! But it would be a special drink and give my dad a chance to sample a little of the good life. I asked the nice man behind the counter how much that super tiny bottle was.... "$450" What? "You should have come in a few months ago, it was only $300 then" Ok, so a airline bottle size of Remy Martin Cognac Louis XIII will set you back $450 and the full bottle (750 ML) can be had for $1800. Yes, $1700 sounds like a lot, but do the math. That baby size is a rip off. Needless to say I passed on the Louis the XIII, but there is no shortage of other fine spirits and wine to choose from.. This shop has an amazing selection and even some hard to find items. On this night I found two bottles that caught my eye. How about a 2005 Bell Petite Verdot ($35) that I have not seen anywhere else other than the winery? Yes, that's right. I picked up a bottle of that for myself. And for my dad? A nice domestic brandy Anno Domini that's produced and bottled by Germain Robin in Ukiah. And it's a full sized bottle and costs a few dollars less than that tiny Louis XIII. The "guys behind the counter" are awesome. They know their stuff and are more than eager to step from behind the counter and walk around the shop and help you find some real gems. The pricing here is not the best around, but still competitive. If you are one of those people who habitually like to bring a bottle of wine for corkage, this is a great spot to pick up an interesting bottle to enjoy over dinner at one of the many Italian restaurants in the area. And if you are looking for a sip of Cognac for just under $500, this is your place. read more

For my first several years in San Francisco, Coit Liquors was just the place to load up a backpack full of beer for one of the various festivals in Washington Square. That changed in, I believe 2006, when Jeff Branco took the place over. Jeff used to be the winemaker at Justin wines down in Paso, and produced several vintages of the Justin Isosceles, which is one of my favorite all time Bordeaux-style blends. So if you're looking for a wine shop where they KNOW wine, yet don't mind if you don't, this is the spot. Whenever I'm in the area I stop in for a taste or two of whatever they've got at the tasting bar. A few months back they also sourced and branded their own Pinot Noir which I picked up a couple of bottles of. I hope that this fits in with their model and they have some more offerings. Arguably the best wine shop in San Francisco....but also a suitable choice for that pint of Jaeger or pack of Marlboros. read more

Don't let the name fool ya... Coit Liquor is anything but a liquor store. They'll hook you up with Barolo, Brunello, Grgich Hills, Cotes de Beaune, St. Emilion, Rioja, Z.D., Cakebread, whatever.... You want a nice bottle of wine (or 5) this is the place to get it. It's pricier than Costco, for sure, but then again you'll find some wines here that Costco ain't never heard of. This is definitely one of the better liquor stores in the Russian Hill neighborhood. They stock a huge variety of hand picked wines at fairly reasonable prices and the staff is very knowledgeable about their inventory. Maybe wine isn't your thing, this place also has some of the best craft brews available on the market, and it's one of the few places that has a regular supply of Russian River beers. What I like most about this spot is their huge wall of liquor, they carry all the basics, but also stock some of the harder to find distilled alcohols like Rogue spirits and central America's Flora De Cana. All in all, this is an excellent store, plenty of drinks to wet your whistle and plenty of cigars to mellow you out :) read more

What a beautiful store! It just blows the typical liquor store out of the water with it's beautiful fixtures, displays and their level of service! I've always passed by on my way to Rogue and never thought about giving this place another look but after the remodel, how could you not take want to look inside? I came in looking specifically for pomegrante tequila hoping to surprise a friend but got distracted by the gorgeous wine displays. Not only was it organized well, but the selection caught my eye. There were some labels I almost had given up hope on and if it weren't for the fact that I was parked 2 neighborhoods away, I might have left with an armful of pinots and petite syrahs. But the one thing I came for, they did not have unfortunately. But someone who worked there was happy to show off the other exotic flavors but alas, it wasn't what I was looking for specifically. Turns out they ran out just before I got in so it must be a hot spot for what I want. I love the fact that they knew I was talking about and the price point was really competitive to what I've seen online. I'll definitely be making the trip back up to Coit next week to get my hands on that bottle of liquor because the quality of service and selection is worth it. read more
