Originally I was thrilled after meeting with Joel, owner of Gleeson Construction. His website is wonderful and he is a down-to earth-charming guy. Discussing my bathroom remodel project was actually fun, especially since the previous contractors had been either wildly overpriced or had unacceptable scheduling issues.
So it was a pleasure receiving his final quote and agreeing on a timeline to create my perfect new bathroom. He had made several good suggestions, his price was reasonable, and I was excited to move forward keeping business local and with his experience, I trusted him to advise me correctly so began ordering the recommended amount of tiles according to his estimate. Once fixtures were received and tiles were picked up, Joel began the project on time.
I was happy that the initial demo was very efficient which lead quickly to new drainage/plumbing, sub floor, insulation and water/mildew resistant wallboard installations. I could already envision the walk-in shower of my dreams.
However, once the wall tile placement began multiple problems occurred. To complicate matters, a previous client had contacted Joel and he asked me if he could 'split' time between the two projects. I held firm and asked that he honor our agreement but grew increasingly nervous as he began rushing my job in order to leave as early as possible to get to his new, much larger project in Petaluma.
While beginning the wall tile installation, he discovered the border trim pieces ordered wouldn't work with the increased depth of his wall board and that the supplier 'should know better'. He did NOT offer to help by speaking with the tile supplier on my behalf so I was then forced to reorder new 1/4 rounds of a different color and negotiate the required restock fee myself..
Then Joel continued to install the subway style wall tiles with such speed that I could intercede only after I noticed that they were not consistently the same color and I was effectively looking at a subtle checker board on my wall! When asked, Joel said "it is what it is" and that we were now short of tiles so finding color replacements would be next to impossible. That suggests his original estimate was off base -- even with extra tiles that I ordered on the recommendation of the tile supplier!
When pressed further on this color subject near project completion, he suggested I recontact the tile supplier again to see if they'd send out someone with matching tiles to fix the job but said "I doubt very much they will do that".
By then I had also discovered that the wall tiles were not evenly placed on the walls and somehow I was to believe that the problem was that my original walls were uneven. I also realized that the new border tiles obstructed the original light switch plate and he suggesting I cut the original down with a new hacksaw blade thus leaving the fix up to me.
Finally, the last day 'clean up' resulted in my garden being littered with grout-soaked water and minute particles of dried grout and tiles hidden under vines and on a small patch of grass bordering a tree. Sloppy and ugly.
However, he was very prompt in supplying the final bill and offered to 'pick up the check' in the morning BEFORE I had discovered the garden situation.
Depressed and angry, I again recontacted the tile people who sent someone out to see Joel's work. The tile specialists were very surprised and indicated that they would have brought the color issue to my attention immediately, giving me the chance to either continue or select new tiles. They also explained there are ways to easily avoid the uneven/wavy wall surface and that, in their opinion, the matter had been mishandled.
My dream shower has become a nightmare so I'm writing this review hoping to save someone from heartache in the future.
Bottom line; Don't get me wrong, I like Joel Gleeson as a person. However, I suggest you think twice before using Gleeson Construction for your project. IF you do business with Joel, get everything in writing before the project begins, get agreement signed and then watch like a hawk to ensure you receive what you paid for. Good luck. read more
