It is with a heavy heart that I write this....the Glarner Stube is not what is was years ago. I have a hard time calling their fare traditional Swiss. We began with a fondue starter that was very thin and flavorless...lacking spice (the traditional allspice for sure) and Kirsch, and enough true, good, real Swiss cheeses...definitely no Vacherin, and not much, if any Gruyere!?. We then ordered our entrees.....the dinner salads were good and the wedge was ok at best. Both salads are topped with delicious looking croutons, that turned out to be extremely rancid. The wedge salad was very light in blue cheese crumbles, and there were no blue cheese lumps in the dressing. The bread and "butter" arrived 1/2 way through the salads. I'm a Wisconsin dairy gal, so Before spreading the suspect-looking whipped "butter" on my bread, I tasted it....yuk, oil (thus the reason the croutons tasted like rancid oil)! When I inquired wether it was real butter, I was informed it was soybean oil butter substitute! Really! Never happen In Switzerland!! Geschnetzel entree arrived In a flavorless brown gravy, and the kalbewurst entree was swimming in a flavorless onion sauce! There wasn't a hint of wine in either sauce...what the heck?! We chose red cabbage and Rosti for our sides. Red cabbage was mushy and extremely vinegary with absolutely no spice....where were the cloves?!? The Rosti was pretty good...Nicely brown and crisp on the outside with a mild Swiss cheese inside, but by now I knew that the beautiful brown crispness was from soybean oil. To end our bland, gloppy, "Swiss" dinner we were offered dessert, which we were afraid to order....but, perhaps one should give them a try, as desserts are not made in house! For $136, I would expect more quality ingredients!!!!! To end on a positive note, the New Glarus Brewing beer was great, as always, and any drive to New Glarus is always beautiful! The Glarner Stube has great ambiance with lots of fun, traditional decor, but be warned, their is nothing traditional about the food...have a beer here and head elsewhere for dinner! I was in NG a few years ago and stayed at the Landhaus....I will try their restaurant the next time I'm in town?! So sad! read more
