This restaurant is pretty good overall. The best part is their service, decor and just overall feel. Ultimately, I think we gotta talk food and how good the food is to warrant a visit. I ordered a pad thai, an entree and a appetizer. It was all really just okay/good. + Pad Thai - Pretty good but kinda was missing something. Maybe more green onion or peanuts on top... not very memorable other than tasting good. + Stuffed Chicken Wings -- Very crispy and I thought this was my favorite. However, the filling was kinda on the dry side. + Sweet and Sour (beef) -- Not bad but thought the sauce was not a great sweet/sour recipe. Just tasted like indistinct/muddy savory gravy rather than have that great sweet/sour brightness. So this is one of those rare reviews I did not really think the restaurant was that great but I would come back if I was in the area for a good option in a nice location. We have been enjoying Ginger Thai since they opened, and we come here as often as we can. The food is delicious, the service is friendly, and the atmosphere is very welcoming. My wife's favorite dish is the pumpkin curry; granted, it looks like they use Acorn Squash and not pumpkin, but I think that's fairly typical. Their version of this curry also includes artichokes, for a very Salinas/Castroville touch. It's delicious and you should try it. My favorite curry is the Panang. Very flavorful and just the right amount of heat. We've tried various other dishes here and we haven't been disappointed at all. Highly recommended. read more

I bought a Tom Yum and I got some type of concoction made out of what it seems coconut milk, tomato, and vietnamese glass noodles? The place has been opened for about 2 months now. I have been in there to many times to try to finish out their menu. Aside from the fish dishes (I don't eat fish) I will be finishing up their menu probably within a meal or two. This is what I think of the place: Parking: Almost non-existent. Aside from the 8 or 9 parking spaces behind the building, you'll have to park on the side streets. Seating: Reasonable, not crowded. You'll get your elbow room! Lunch Hour: Go before noon, and you should get a table. After 12 PM, hit and miss. Dinner: 5:30-7:30 is pretty crowded. Take out: No take out option provided. But if you really want to, you can always go in, seated, order what you want, drink your water, wait till the food is served, than ask for your to go boxes. Problems solved. Prices: About the same pricing range as any average Thai restaurant ranging from Monterey County to the Bay Area. Which means most dishes are +/-$1 within the $10 range. Basing on comparison with other Thai places I have visited, the prices are reasonable. Portions: Compare to other ethnic restaurants, i.e. Chinese, American, and etc, the portions are small. But with the rice added, it's just right. Please note, I am not complaining. It's their style, and I have been to Thailand to experience it first hand. It's kind of like how some people complained about Chinese food that no matter how much you eat, you are hungry again after an hour. Thai food from any where is like that for me. At least it's not French food, where you only get a few bite sizes and paid out your entire monthly paycheck for that one meal... Food: I think the food is the best Thai food within 15 miles of Salinas. Outside of that, Baan Thai in Seaside can give them a run for their money. Aside from Baan Thai, no one else in Monterey County can provide the same good taste with the cheaper price range than Ginger Thai. (There are a couple of other Thai places inside Monterey County that has good Thai food, but at a higher price range) And as the name of the restaurant implies, they used a lot of ginger in their food. I am a ginger lover. So this place fits me just fine. If you can't stand ginger, well.... The speed they serve their food is a bit slow. But each dish is cooked individually unlike many other Asian places. And I do believe they cook them from scratch. I like the attention they put into cooking my food. It's just hard for me during lunchtimes to wait so long for them. I think this place is a great addition to the food selection for the City of Salinas. I have read some of the reviews on here. I don't agree with the negative ones. I have often suspected those commentators used what they were used to judge and measure things. It's not their fault. But I do think people need to keep in mind that different ethnic foods should be treated differently. Just because one is used to having super sized portions at some other restaurants, and than you are getting a smaller portion from here, it does not mean the place is bad. (Kind of like how I made the comment about French food; you don't see many people criticizing the French food for their small portion and the expensive price, and they kept going back to spend over $100 per meal.) In short, I like the place. And yes, I am definitely going back for more. And I will also be recommending this place to my friends and family. read more

Worst experience!! Very rude staff. I went there for lunch after a long drive with my two toddlers. Both were hungry and tired. So they were cranky. My one year old was spilling some food and the staff was making faces at us and continuously staring badly at my kids. The food was very bad. Dint taste good at all. If you are AFRICAN AMERICAN please do not come here, unless you are ready to have discrimination for lunch! My colleague (African american) and I (also African american) came here for our lunch break at 12 pm. We were seated at the center table at 12:15 pm by one of the servers who handed us a menu and said nothing to us at all...... (dont worry, the story gets better...) We waited for 20 minutes, looking and waiting to be served (mind you many guest were coming in during this busy lunch period and were greeted/seated). At 12:35 pm, I went to the counter to address the server who sat us to see why we have not been acknowledged. As I arrived the counter, she immediately looked up at me and said "we're coming" (clearly at this point I am fully aware that they have intentionally ignored us) I told the server that we've been waiting for 20 minutes to be acknowledge and we would like to order to go......(oh...its getting better) From there I went back to my seat awaiting to have our to-go order taken (after 5 minutes, she comes to take our order...No hi, No water, no apologies), as we were waiting we noticed 2 different groups come in ( one person was seated right next to us) and immediately was attended to. As we continue to wait, the gentleman that was seated directly next to us and the other group of two men seated at the bar was greeted by the sever, ordered was taken and they all received their food as we sat there looking like pigeons on the street lights! We were outraged and VERY disappointed by the discrimination shown to us. when I asked to talk to the manager and BOTH servers acted as if they didn't know who the manager was and then one ended up saying it was the cook (who was too busy to come out and speak with us). When I asked the server and the staff how they would feel being treated the EXACT way we were treated, our response was "we were so busy, we missed you" REALLY?!?! Okay. You missed this 5'6 mocha skin color and my 5'0 feet caramel hazed coworker...who was sitting DIRECTLY in the middle of your restaurant??? Haven't even finished eating and I'm very pleased! Came in to kill time for a appointment and ordered a soup with no meat (can't remember name) but it was nice and spicy and you can choose the spice and it wasn't to over powering but still very good! And had a little complimentary salad with peanut sauce before the soup came.. I live across town in Salinas but I will definitely come here more for the vegetarian options with the tofu and eggplant, service was also good they checked up on me the right times, since I was alone I'm only on my phone and just like to eat alone ... This restaurant consistently hits the three criteria I have for a good restaurant; service, flavor and satisfaction. The servers are delightful; sweet and accommodating. The food is delicious. Our favorites are the pumpkin artichoke curry with tofu and the yellow curry with fish. We often start with the fresh spring roles that are like a wrapped salad. If you like it spicy then go for it but have a Thai-iced-tea to calm the mouth on fire and enjoy. The best is that once full there are often a little left over that can be had for tomorrow's lunch. This restaurant must of changed hands- cause the old owner and staff were great. Nobody in this restaurant spoke Thai or knew what Thai food was. I ordered basil fried rice. What I received was soy sauce and rice lol. Every single table in the restaurant had issues with their meals. Look at the other review from 7/15/22 from another customer. They got my wifes order wrong, my order wrong and then when I paid they left my debit card at the register- and brought my bill to the table. I had to go back the restaurant the next day to retrieve my debit card. The waiter did not know what Tom Kah gai was. Sad because we used to love this place. read more
