Gilded Unicorn is a unique restaurant. First, the menu is classic comfort food with a twist and sense of humor. The tater tot casserole, for example, has brisket and jalapeños in a brown gravy - it was excellent. The pea salad is another example: many of us grew up eating peas but this salad is a fresh take on a classic. The bananas Foster dessert was great. Second, the place itself is located nearly two stories below street level in the original boiler room of the historic Montvale hotel. Rock walls and a very high ceiling makes the room seem cozy and airy at the same time. Finally, great service and a friendly staff made our meal a great experience. Interesting decor. Had to wait to be seated even though there were at least four tables available. Interesting menu but doesn't live up to the hype. We had the deviled eggs and Mushroom stroganoff. The egg filling was so soft you could not pick them up and had to use a fork. They were supposed to be smoked yokes with maple chili and applewood bacon. The bacon was there and the only flavor was smoke. The Stroganoff was pasta completely stuck together like glue with a flour sauce with no flavor. There were four slices of mushrooms on the bottom of dish. The pasta had to be cut with a fork because if you picked up one you picked up them all. Until they find a cook, don't go! read more

Not worth the hype. I was disappointed by my pizza and the "fancy garlic knots". maybe part of the charm is that this restaurant is underground and has stone walls? Could be an interesting place to make your date think they are entering a catacombs but I wouldn't go out of your way for this restaurant when spokane already has more pizza per capita than anywhere else in the country. Dropped by here last night on the recommendation of one of the front desk staff at the hotel I'm staying at down the street who's restaurant was closed for the evening. So glad I did. Last night I had the Bison Meatloaf. It was delicious. So much so, this evening I decided to return. Tonight I had a Dark Side of Manhattan (whiskey, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth, and orange bitters) the Pan Roasted Pork Chop for my entree, and Banana Fosters Bread Pudding for dessert. It was called chefs choice! The waitress said that it's a 3 course meal, that the chef decides what it will be. He can get as creative as he wants and they don't tell you what it's going to be, but its always delicious! You have to have atleast 3 people or more to do it and its $40 per person. It was a busy Saturday night, but it took 15 minutes to have a waiter come to our table. We got our food pretty quickly, but the drinks arrived halfway through our meal. The food itself was meh. The Caesar salad was just Ok and my mushroom stroganoff was pretty bland and tasteless. Only one menu item could be considered vegetarian. It would be nice to have a few more vegetarian options. We started with the Bocce Rolls they were good but needed seasoning in the roll it's self and in the dipping sauces. My wife enjoyed the mac & cheese as did I. As for my tater tot casserole the tots were nice and crunchy, however the brisket was very under seasoned. I feel like we stepped into a Harry Potter's Hogsmead, in a good way! The large stairs going down into the basement is like a quaint little get away from the noisy hustle and bustle of the street. So this place is in the basement of a hotel, where there are very high ceilings of exposed brick, adorned with all sorts of outlandish paintings. It really did feel like we were in a movie. It has very intimate seating areas with low lighting, and other little alcoves where one can hide away for a quiet dinner together. I ordered the blackened trout and my husband got the pork chops. Though I enjoyed my dish, I feel it was a little spicey and a bit dry. The sides were not my absolute favorite. My husbands Pork chop was quite tasty and juicy. They have some very interesting and yummy cocktails. I really just appreciated the atmosphere and how it felt like a whole other world and not your every day restaurant. One look at the decor and the unique menu was enough to get me in the door. Even though I was alone, I got the best seat in the house with a view of the entire establishment. I started off with the Tuxedo No2 which I highly recommended for fans of strong herbal cocktails like a Sazerac etc. I sampled the Deviled Eggs, Pea salad which I took to go for a snack later. Oh, my! Decided to make reservations this week because it has been so difficult to walk in to restaurants these days with so many people wanting to eat out and help our local places. Wanted to try something new and stumbled upon this little jewel. It's in the basement but has a fun, eclectic, medieval vibe to it. First, ordered drinks. My hubby chose from a limited beer list but he's not overly picky. I chose from their cocktail list. I chose wisely! The Pimm's Cup was delicious. An absolute must if you like ginger, citrus, and a hint of cucumber. Seriously fantastic! Must. Learn. To. Make. 2nd, food. I'm surprised at those saying food wasn't memorable. I had the duck and waffle. The savory waffle was perfect - nice and toasty and the crispy duck fell off the bone. It's accompanied by a tasty type hash made of potatoes, crispy asparagus, and other veggies. The syrup wasn't overly sweet. So yummy! Hubby had the tater tot casserole. The man loves his tots and while he loved my mom's cream of mushroom tater tot and hamburger concoction, this version with brisket, cheese, and gronions received 2 thumbs up. And last, dessert. The peanut butter pie. Not too sweet. Just right. It's a substantial dessert - rich and dense - that we couldn't finish. I sat at the bar and had a "Tiki Drink Dejour"... delicious. I didn't catch her name, but the bartender was great, and really knew her stuff. For takeout I requested a green salad and their Cast Iron Flat Iron... not sure what I expected for a "green salad", but it it had green apple, grapes, sweet potato, lettuce, and celery and was stupendous! as was the main course as well. Let's start at arrival. Stood at hostess stand for easily 5 minutes ( I bet it was closer to 10) with the staff walking by over and over again. Not a single comment or welcome. Then finally after stopping (actually to note, not welcoming us in any manner), with a half empty restaurant and being on-time for our reservation, we were seated at a horrid table with a handrail from the adjacent steps hitting me in the shoulder. I asked to be moved, which was odd since there were many alternative tables. Menu was nice and had a decent set of interesting sounding dishes. We each ordered the starter-main-desert package. Timing was interesting as a different server tried to deliver our main before our starter showed up. Our primary server stopped them to take it back and put it under a heat lamp for a couple minutes until serving our starter, and then delivered the main. All of this was reason so far for a 1 star. However, we haven't discussed the food yet. Getting to the food did not do anything to change the experience. I ordered the Wild Mushroom Stroganoff. I have never had to use the term 'dry' to describe stroganoff, but here is a first. It was dry enough to choke a moose, with an excessive salt burden. Oh...and the Wild Mushroom part amounted to 5 small chunks, about 1/4 inch in size, of burnt up mushrooms (I actually didn't know them as mushrooms until I looked at the menu to figure what it was) sprinkled on top of the noodles that rested themselves on a flavorless white creme sauce. Seriously, a can of mushroom soup poured on the bottom, with noodles laid on top would have been more flavorful. It is Christmas season and being in the giving spirit, I gift the Gilded Unicorn 2 stars over what truly was a poorly earned 1 star. read more

Having never been here before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by the cozy stone basement vibe going on. I also loved the vintage plates they used!
