We had trouble finding someone who could come tile our shower and bathroom floor - everyone I talked to was booked for months in advance - and then I found Gilbert Tile on Yelp and Paul had an opening starting that week! When they went to tile the shower, we discovered that our contractor had installed the walls incorrectly: they weren't even close to plumb, they were installed over the lip of the shower pan so they bowed out (the studs should've been notched to allow for it), and they were installed flush against the pan, which would compromise the water seal. Paul and Jesus did amazing work to flatten and plumb the walls so the tile would look perfect in the end. The floor required a 1 5/8" mud coat as well, as we were having hardwood floors put in right after the tile, and they had a double subfloor, and Paul matched the height exactly. We are very impressed! That all said, some of the floor tiles that were installed are chipped or slightly crooked. I wish they'd taken the time to pop the chipped tiles out of the sheets before laying them. read more

If you are flexible and available, Paul Gilbert is an excellent option for tile installation. Let me illustrate by my experience. I contacted him on the basis of good Yelp reviews. I have a modest kitchen (96 square feet) and a half-bath (18 square feet) that needed new flooring. I had purchased the tile (from Art Tile after looking at Import Tile and the Tile Shop; skipped Home Depot on purpose). I had tile laid in the kitchen and bath 4 years prior ($1,700 labor only). Therefore, adjusted for inflation, I had a price in mind. Paul gave me an estimate higher than what I estimated. I told him so, and he made a generous adjustment that we agreed upon. He thought he might start on Monday or Tuesday, but nothing firm. He actually started on Thursday, after letting me know. Paul did not have a dolly along to move the stove, but I did have one so we used that. Paul worked diligently and vigorously that whole day removing the old tile. One of his helpers, Jesus, worked the next day, also diligently. Jesus spoke very little English, so making requests was difficult. I bought tile that had a fairly wide variation of design, and I wanted two or three not be to put in a prominent place. But this and other problems got solved more easily when Paul showed up. Nonetheless, Jesus did very careful measuring and somewhat miraculously got whole tiles placed at the two kitchen entrances. Impressive! Paul told me that he had ordered a bag of medium grey gout that could be used on my job and for one other customer. He had previously asked me what color I wanted, and I told him dark grey. However, I said OK to what he had ordered. I'm sure he would have used dark grey if I insisted. Paul is friendly (and very focused on his work as a small business person with two employees), so I wanted to make it easy as possible for him. On the last day, I wanted a heavy entrance door adjusted to accommodate a door sweep at the bottom. We had talked about this before, but both he and I wanted to get the job completed fast. He balked, saying that door adjustment was not part of his task. (This is true for most tile installers, from what I know.) As it happened, Paul was re-installing the toilet when Jesus showed up. Paul needed to go the hardware store to get longer bolts. Jesus generously started to help me, including doing some special cutting which saved me a lot of work. By the time Paul got back, we had the door done, and were putting back the refrigerator and stove. Tile installation is hard work. Tile is heavy; measurements must be precise. Paul and his helpers are pleasant and hard-working. In the end, I got a good job at a fair price. If I have more tile work to be done, I will definitely check with Paul. read more
