The "Df" in the name of this restaurant vexed me every time I saw it. Was it a sound? A typo? Then I visited Gil Tacos and thought I should actually look into it. It turns out Df is supposed to be D.F., capital D and capital F, as in Distrito Federal, the former name of Mexico City. So "Estilo D.F." means Mexico City-style. I've been trying to get Yelp to change the "Df" to "D.F." in the restaurant name, to no avail. So I had to write this little preface to appease the editor in me, and so that other people, who might also be wondering what Df means, knows what it means and how it's supposed to be spelled. Tacos! Gil Tacos specializes in tacos. They have a lot of tacos on their menu. This is the place to get those hardcore Mexican tacos, like lengua, tripe and cabeza. I am a softcore Mexican, so I opted for carnitas, al pastor and choriqueso. I got them Mexico City-style, which is with some diced onion and cilantro. The choriqueso was my favorite, and had a nice blob of cheese in it. The two pork tacos were a wee bit grisly and dry. Twice, I had to go up to the counter where the salsa was and douse my tacos in green chile salsa. The dry meat doesn't bother me as much as the gristle. I don't like fishing around in my mouth to pick out cartiledge. Salsa and chiles and things are at the front where you pick up your food. It's a communal thing. When you get your food, you can add salsa. That reminds me: You order at the counter, and they call your number. There's no table service. We also got a carne asada burrito, which I was told was excellent. Maybe I'll get a burrito the next time I visit, or a torta. But I had to get the tacos, because the word "tacos" is in this restaurant's name! How could I not? They have horchata and jamaica, and soft drinks in bottles and cans (like Mexican Coke). Service was quick and helpful. Menu was full of classic, no frills options for reasonable prices. The restaurant itself was clean and quiet, with ample seating. There is a small countertop area with assorted pickled veggies and salsas you can add to enhance your meal. We were also glad to be able to purchase Jarritos, specifically the tamarind flavor, as it's our favorite yet hard to find in restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our choices! read more

Gil's is a little hidden off 96th Street, you really have to be looking for it. We had lunch there the other day. The staff is super welcoming, engaging, friendly and attentive. We ordered and paid at the counter. Food comes out fairly quickly. The dining room is slightly dated but really clean and comfortable. There is an area for private parties. We took a booth. The menu offers a typical range of Mexican fare - tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tortas, etc. We were in the mood for a couple tacos. I had a shrimp and a chicken taco. The shrimp taco was delicious, fresh with plump grilled shrimp. The chicken taco was a really dry. Fortunately they offered sauces that helped with the dryness. I wouldn't get chicken again but the shrimp was great. My husband had a steak taco, which he devoured and said was delicious. He also had a chicken taco, which was dry. The restrooms are large and clean. There was a changing table in the women's room. The parking lot is adequate although there were potholes on the access road. read more

I should not have waited so long to try Gil Tacos. I had a birria burrito and some chips and guacamole. The burrito was full of savory beef and melted cheese, and some other stuff that didn't matter. The dipping consommé only took the deliciousness up a few notches. One of the best things I've eaten in the past year, easily. The chips and guacamole were a little bland but I squeezed some lime into the guacamole and that helped. Gil taco is behind the gas station, where you turn to go to Woodland bowl, but turn right to get to the restaurant and left to go bowling. Tucked inside a former Bob Evans, the northside of town finally gets a great, authentic taco place. These are the same folks that run Gil Tacos on Lynhurtst. Tacos are individually ordered and made-to-order. Tortas have a good amount of toppings on them. Very casual environment, ample parking but you have to pull into the side road near the BP to get to the restaurant. Follow the signs. Birria tacos are only served on weekends and are very flavorful. So glad, that we saw the big sign on our way to car dealership and decided to do a lunch take out! Well there have been multiple takeouts since then! Order by phone or even in the restaurant isnt much of a wait. The restaurant is clean and spacious - typical mexican restaurant type but food is more on the authentic side. So far tried their chorizo, campechanos, birria, al pastor, carnitas, choriqueso tacos amongst the entire family. Always great but their salsas are truly awesome! We always save the salsas for later use cos they are so good and spicy. Fair warning though that the salsas are not for mild spicy kind of people. Tried tamales as well and they are okay, guacamole was a bit of a disappointment though. Taco is where its at and we plan to stick with tacos at a frequent pace. read more

The Chips and Dips were pretty solid overall, but I was not impressed with the tacos. Usually I try the Asada Tacos and any specialty tacos (Gil Taco) when going to a new place because it's a good base level of comparison. The meat in both of my tacos was very dry. I usually enjoy adding sauces to my tacos, so that did help, but if you were to eat these plain, you'd be very disappointed. The service was acceptable. You order at the counter and the food comes out pretty quickly. It is also pretty difficult to find the entrance due to the way 96th St and Keystone are set up. Overall, I would give them another try if I was in the area, but it's not worth a detour. read more
