We drank water and placed appetizer and entree order together. 20 min later food arrived, no one noticed our waters needed refill when they delivered the food so we specifically requested while we had her attention. The place either has seriously crazy acoustics or we stumbled upon a loud talkers community meeting. We didn't even try to talk to each other. I went with my bf and brother and they both can EAT. We got a two person combo which comes with 4 veggie options and two meat. We added the lamb and I got a manhattan ( in a small disposable cup which was a lil disappointing from a vibes perspective). The food was more than enough for three and left extremely satisfied. Went last night with a friend because I LOVE Ethiopian food and haven't had any in months. I called ahead to make sure they were open. When we got there, they were serving dine-in customers in about a 350 square foot enclosed annex (a few doors up the block from their actual restaurant). There were at least 20 people in there. We looked in the window like... ! There was a couple that walked past us, then doubled back when they realized they recognized some of the people at a table that was seating a party of eight. The couple went in and chatted for a while and didn't seem like they were planning on leaving. It took a server about 10 minutes to come out and acknowledge me. I asked where we could sit and she pulled two menus out and told us we could sit right next to the party of eight, who were less than six feet away from us. I told her that we'd be eating elsewhere until they got their COVID protocol together. This has been our go-to Ethiopian spot though we only get out here about once a year. Even though we have Ethiopian options in the City, we use this has an excuse to see our Brooklyn friends. Stopped in after the Brooklyn museum. There was business but no wait. I was going to order the vegetarian combination, but the staff explained that if you order two combos, instead of 4, you can pick 8 items so I got the Ghenet combination instead with 2 meats and 4 vegetable dishes. We got the bone in chicken leg, spicy beef stew, mushrooms, collard greens, butternut squash, cabbage. Our favorite were the chicken and cabbage. Next time I would definitely order two chicken instead. My family said the sauce was reminiscent of mole. The spicy beef and butternut squash were well cooked but definitely a bit spicy. I wasn't a fan of the spices used for the mushroom. Collard greens were the easiest item to pick up. The injera was bouncy and plentiful and not as sour as some recent Ethiopian places we ordered from. They give you a wipe for your hands after. Back then, I was astounded that people were eating food with their hands, and that culture shock probably explains why I never checked out another Ethiopian restaurant again, even in New York City where there are a few spots. One of them is Ghenet in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn. My wife Jun and I were meeting with her best friend in graduate school who is from Africa for a Sunday dinner, and the friend asked whether we would be up for Ethiopian cuisine. Jun had never tried the country's food before and kept asking me how my experience was like; I shared the novelty of eating food with hands but couldn't exactly describe what the taste was like. Anyways, we agreed to the proposition and met the friend at Ghenet. I certainly can attest that my experience here was more memorable in terms of the quality of food and Jun was pleasantly surprised how good the food she was having. Ethiopian cooking is founded on the use of different spices that can bring flavor combinations to meats and vegetables, accompanied by the country's flag bread called injera. The typical format is that you order a bunch of food that goes on top of a large bed of injera which you can tear off and dip the food with your hand. The menu at Ghenet initially overwhelmed us but our friend made some recommendations to make our lives easier. Surprisingly, the restaurant has vegetarian- and vegan-friendly options too, and you can order four different vegetable options for a price of $20 for one-person portion. Jun was genuinely excited after dipping a piece of injera on the lentils (misir wett) and spicy bean (shiro wett), both flavored with berbere sauce that is made of red chili powder seasoned with herbs and spices. The other vegetables of cabbage, potatoes and carrots (atkilt wett) and sautéed mushrooms (engoudaye tibs), which displayed milder spices, were also very good. The real star in our food, however, was the tender lamb morsels (yebeg tibs) marinated in wine. We do not actively seek lamb meat because of how it could smell funky, but the one at Ghenet, marinated in wine, didn't display such quality and was quite rich and flavorful, and the meat displayed great texture. The portion of the entire food offerings was on the generous side, but Jun and I had no problem finishing them off, and Jun looked a happy baby that just discovered a new toy. I'm not sure if our friend had to make a reservation at Ghenet; in any event, the unassuming yet charming dining space was nearly full during our meal so I would recommend booking in advance if possible, especially for a larger party. There is full bar at Ghenet, where you can try to the traditional Ethiopian honey wine that doesn't strike you as too strong at first but overall may get you pretty buzzed after a few more sips. I'm very glad to have the opportunity to reconnect on my experience with Ethiopian food and Ghenet certainly makes a good case that the country's cuisine deserves more recognition in the diverse dining scene of New York City. All Injera are not created equal. This is my second foray into Ethiopian cuisine this week and third in all. Of my limited encounters, the injera here wasn't my fave. It was heavier, somewhat drier, and not as acidic as the ones I've had before. The vegetarian sampler allows you to choose 4 vegetarian toppings for a steep price of 18.95. I chose the mushroom, pickled beet and potato, cabbage, and split peas. The split pea and beet were my faves. The mushroom is spicy, but they do warn you. I never thought I'd say this (given my first experience in Chicago), but I think Ethiopian food is moving up on the list of my favorite cuisines. My suggestion is to go with friends, especially if it's your first time. And split one of the combination plates. The prices seem a bit high but it's a deal and it's worth it. Plus you get to share and try new things!  The one constant in injera.... it's a traditional spungy, sour bread that is used to scoop up all the wonderful meats and veggies of your dish. It's definitely a unique flavor that is a bit more sour than one would expect and i love it.  Now on to the food...   Kitfo Tiklil.... light and crispy exterior with tender and juicy meat that has a touch of creamy cottage cheese. The meat is slightly tart yet creamy, sort of like liverwurst. The flavors are mild, not overpowering and very pleasant. I enjoyed it. Sambusa .... light, flaky pastry dough stuffed with ground chicken. It was mild in flavor and slightly bland. The sauce added a nice touch of flavor. Sega tibs.... tender, juicy beef strips with onions, peppers and various spices. It came with a creamy chick pea puree that had a hint of sweetness, all on top of injera. Decadent! Ghenet was a nice reminder of the appeal of Ethiopian cuisine I first discovered while studying abroad in London. The space is dark and exotic, with African touches throughout. We came here for a birthday celebration and I shared the Ghenet combo platter with another friend. I love when veggies are done right, reveling in a great blend of Ethiopian spices and an undercurrent of heat in every bite. Everything was heavily sauced, but the lentils and split peas curries held up very well. I hate to write such reviews, because I really want such places to be good, to get better and stay around. But this restaurant is one of those that try to capitalize on some ethnic heritage without caring much about it, looks like. If you think you are a hipster, or want to be among hipsters, or want to feel extra liberal, inclusive, diverse etc, that's your place. But let's get real about food: First thing first, the cooking oil they use is incredibly low quality. If you usually know what you eat, you will not want to eat that stuff. This place is not cheap. The dishes are $20+, way too expensive for the quality and taste they serve. We ordered: (i) the spicy traditional bread appetizer, nothing special really, rubbed with spices and topped with dollops of bland cheese. (ii) four veggie samples: spicy lentil, butternut squash, split peas, and beans. only lentils deserve a mention. butternut squash was overwhelmed with the tomato sauce, split pea and beans were both very bland. (iii) beef stew, that was also worth a mention, not because it was spectacular, but it easily stood out among the rest. After all anybody with a crock pot can cook a decent stew. the wine?! they charge $37 per bottle for ~$8 bottles on the street, which means they are probably paying no more than $5 a bottle but charging $37, quite unfair for such $hitty wine. In summary, I would call this place a money making machine disrespectful of Ethiopian food and heritage. The place began to fill rapidly with only one waitress serving a full house of patrons. This affects the quality of customer service. Ghenet Management needs to be much more considerate than this. Luckily there is a back area. You really have to capture the attention of the people who work here as they are working as hosts and servers. They have a nice selection of Ethiopian wine that you can try which I would recommend. They will let you taste them before you decide if you ask nicely. We ordered the Sambusa as an appetizer. They reminded me of empanadas but with less pastry. The food had so much flavor and most of the spice came with the sauce. It made me excited for dinner. We decided to go all out and get the Ghenet combination for four. The combination comes with one traditional meat dish served with two vegetarian dishes. So with the four, we got four chicken and beef dishes and eight vegetarian dishes. Everything is served on a bed of Injera, a flat bread made of Teff, a fine grain unique to Ethiopia. You also get bread on the side. This is your earring utensil, along with your hands. I loved every dish. The lentils were amazing. The mushrooms and the cabbage were the table favorite. The waitress let us try Ethiopian cabernet and we liked it but sadly they were out of a whole bottle. We settled for the Shiraz instead. The food is just not that good to me anymore. The gluten free injera was really dry and flavorless, the last time I went.

I am not sure what happened to Ghenet -- but no Meat Combo choices are available anymore, and the single serving meat offerings are small and overpriced, and I'm not sure why strips of chicken fajitas with green and red peppers (not an Ethiopian dish) are pretending to be Doro Tibs and are on the menu. This is simply not the way Ethiopian food should be prepared. It seems like there has been a change in ownership. Yeworkwoha Ephrem seems to have moved to New Jersey and I am not sure who is at the helm in Brooklyn. Maybe a Mexican cook who thinks fajitas are OK as Ethiopian food. And that is sad. read more

Came here on a Thursday for early dinner with friends. The place was EMPTY. Great we thought! They wouldn't sit us until "everyone in our party was here", again, EMPTY..... It took a long time for them to come take our order, because they were busy on their iPads/phones at the bar. When they did take our order, there were 2 waitresses that circulated around, they forgot one of the appetizers and the other one they brought out, was the wrong one. Again...EMPTY. This review is for three delivery experiences. The first experience, about 8 months ago, was excellent; food arrived hot, delicious and on time. I ordered directly from the restaurant via the website and had no issues. My partner said the fish was the best he'd ever had, and the vegetarian combo was really great - vibrant flavors all around. The second experience was mixed. As before I ordered directly from the restaurant website. The delivery was really late - about 45 minutes after the delivery time range. Half the meal was hot and delicious, and the other half arrived cold and awful. After reheating the cold stuff, the taste was ... just OK. The third experience was awful. The website wouldn't take my order (using the same browser as before); when I called the restaurant to order by phone, they redirected me to Uber Eats, who naturally couldn't honor my "neighborhood discount." The food arrived only slightly late, but one appetizer was substituted with ... we're still not sure what that was, and the injera (bread) was missing. Missing! We tried collard greens, peas and carrots, cabbage and potatoes, mushrooms in a berbere sauce, chicken with caramelized onions, and the beef stew.
