Ignored by 4 waiters rushing by as we stood at the unattended hostess stand. Beautiful setting. Jazz music. We were eventually seated behind a large support column even though there were many many tables open with view of stage. My omelet was okay. Nothing incredible. The roast potatoes were crispy and very very smoky. Reminded me too much of meat. Even though I declined, the waiter brought me some unseasoned ones toward end of our meal. That was sweet. He was very gracious. My husband had pork belly and grits which he stated was okay. He got upsold some sourdough bread which he said was crunchy . HOLY WOW - AMAZING! I called Geraldine's at 3:00 pm to see if they could handle a party of 18 that same night - at prime dinner time of 7:00pm. They said they could but only if we agreed to family style dining. I was a little uneasy but since our options were limited I agreed. I am so glad I did !! There are limited "great views" of the band due to the layout of the building, so communicate with the host if you want something specific. Ceviche Tacos with Cobia, fried chicken skin, Toreado and avocado. Very cheffy and very good. Heirloom Tomato Salad with Hausbar nopales, strawberry and goddess dressing. Fresh and tasty. JBG Roasted Beets with deviled egg, pickled mustard seed and rye crumble. Love Beets. Grilled Summer Squash with pecan sorrel gremolata, lime ricotta and hoja santa (whatever that is). Veggies taken up a notch. Smoked Carrots with mole, sumac and puffed amaranth. Wow! Best carrots we've had! Pig Face Candy Bar with cheese crackers, chow chow and Dijon. Amazing! I could have eaten one by myself! For those who know that I'm a carnivore, you might be saying, "What's with all of the vegetables?" Stopped in for brunch on Sunday. Despite the full dining room it wasn't difficult to secure a reservation a couple days in advance. Service was attentive and our friendly waitress was happy to make recommendations. Our meals both came out great. My friend had the steak and eggs which she said were amazing (particularly the sweet potato fritter and cream spinach) and the steak was cooked perfectly to her liking. I was on a healthy kick and got the Quinoa breakfast salad. I had a workout that morning and was concerned I'd still be hungry but it was pretty filling. My husband and I are in town for a quick get-away. We happened to select this restaurant because I could do a reservation via Open Table. We were surprised that it's part of a hotel but that didn't take away from the food or service. I started with the cocktail - One night in Bangkok. It had lemongrass infused vodka and was very refreshing. The food is small plate style so for 2 of us we ordered 3 plates and we were fine. We started with the endive salad which was light and flavorful. We then had the broccolini and that was delicious - with Asian influenced flavors, cashew butter, and crispy shallots on top. We then enjoyed the pork chop. It was served with purple cabbage purée - which made the pork chop seem even more flavorful. Just as we were finishing our meal the live band started. It was a trio who played funk/blues. They were fabulous. Since we were enjoying the music we decided to stay for dessert. We had the Apple Bottom. I'm not a big fan of hotel restaurants. But we received some comps for this restaurant so we figured to try it for brunch. As soon as I walked in, I felt something was off with the service, and I was right. We were seated 5 minutes after we walked in, which is fine without reservation. We were seated in Amber's area who came with water after another 5 minutes. Not asking if we wanted anything else to drink. After another 5 minutes, she went to the table behind us with 4 people to get their order. Then she came over to ours and took our order, she continued to go to another table with 8 people and took their order. You can imagine that this took a long time before she was even able to go to the POS system to type everything in. I think it might have been 20 min before I got the beer that I ordered. She came up with the excuses that something was wrong with the draft system. Which probably was the case because the beer tasted awful. But instead of bringing this to my attention immediately and offer me a bottle, she brought me a bad beer anyway. Then she went on, to recommended me a bottle of beer. When she brought it over, it tasted very lemony. I thought it was supposed to be like that but when I mentioned it to her, she admitted the bartender squeezed a lime on top to make the foam go away (WHAAAAAT!!!). First of all, like a good bartender, you should know that the collar is needed on a beer for taste. Second of all, WHY WOULD YOU SQUEEZE A LIME ON TOP OF A BEER? When the food finally arrived after 45 minutes, I was very disappointed that my food wasn't that warm. This just added to my dissatisfaction. I would like to give one extra star, because management picked up on the problems and offered us a dessert and the beer was taken off our check but all by all, I think they have to take a good look at their personnel and either train them better or find better people for the standard of the restaurant in one of the highest end hotels in Austin. read more

This is a lovely place for a nice night out - in our case, Thanksgiving, which also was my birthday this year. They had some traditional specials for Thanksgiving but we ordered off the main menu. Biscuits are as good as everyone says. The Brussels sprouts are the best ones I've had anywhere and I've had a lot of good ones Our server, Tai, was fantastic, and she recommended the Cacio E Pepe, which we might not have been drawn to otherwise and that sauce was delish. Short ribs were also tasty. And to finish, the sticky toffee pudding with ginger ice cream: wow! Tai also brought out a pot de creme with a candle for my birthday, which was a nice bonus (though we were so full we brought most of it back with us to the hotel to enjoy tomorrow). Geraldine's was a great brunch place, but you are definitely mostly paying for the location. They had a rooftop with a pool and a view. The mimosa carafes were pretty expensive for just a few mimosas and their big drinks were also VERY expensive, but if you're in a big group it may be worth it. However, their food was GREAT. I love hash browns and breakfast potatoes and they had one of the best seasoned breakfast potatoes I've ever had, if not the best. Everything had such great flavor even down to the eggs. My rating hovers between a 2 and a 3, but I rounded up because our server Alif was personable and knowledgeable about the menu. Oh, and it wins points for its name - Geraldine was a guinea hen who used to wander the neighborhood. The restaurant is capacious, but has several distinct areas to keep it cozy. It also has enough personality that it doesn't feel like your standard issue hotel dining room. A word of warning: The seating in the lounge space beyond the bar is frightfully uncomfortable. I saw multiple parties moving from chair grouping to chair grouping, trying to find something workable. We lasted all of fifteen minutes on stools that hurt my tuchus. The dinner menu has all of the typical trappings of Austin fine dining: smoked veggies, pickled spices, pig face, and the like. All of the items were compelling on paper, but lacked finesse and oomph in reality. Scallops with peaches? Sign me up. However, the peaches were flavorless slivers paired with three slightly undercooked scallops. Barbecued short rib? Yes, please. Turns out that the rib was tender, but bland like it had sat in my crock pot too long. We sampled several other dishes that were neither offensive, nor memorable. The best of the bunch was the grilled summer squash with some zingy lime ricotta and nutty gremolata. I wouldn't go out of my way to return to Geraldine's for the food. Good grief, we are SO late with this review. We went here for the first time with another couple last Friday night. Rainey is definitely NOT our scene, but this restaurant seemed somewhat contained/normal in terms of the crowd and it's a pretty nice space. Drinks are good--one of us stuck with their G&T and the other got the mezcal old-fashioned. We pretty much ordered almost everything on their menu because our friend has a hearty appetite. Here's a quick breakdown: --Tomato Salad: boring, unseasoned, did not taste an ounce of ginger. Go to Central Market, buy some quality heirlooms, sprinkle them with sea salt, and skip this $15 (LOL!) "dish" --Roasted Beets: Delicious and a unique approach. Could have used more labhneh! --Tuna Crudo: WHY the watermelon??? WWWWHHHHHYYYYYY???????!! --Smoked Carrots: Carrots were undercooked; mole was incredible --Fingerling Potatoes: Sleeper hit! We loved these --Grilled Broccolini & Brussels Sprouts: All of us enjoyed both of these dishes. Nothing remarkable, but solid vegges. --Halibut: Good! --Smoked Short Rib: this was good, but the meat itself was a bit bland. Once we put those orders in with someone else at long last, both the drinks and sweets took a really long time to come out. During that period, a freaking band went on stage and it was SO GODDAM LOUD that we couldn't even talk so we had to move to an outside table. We had ordered all the desserts and when they came out, the chocolate ice cream with the chocolate tart was a melted puddle. When one of us pointed that out to the server, he goes "Oh, well, we don't use any stabilizers in our ice cream, so that's why." WRONG ANSWER, BUDDY!!!!!! We, too, make ice cream at home--without "stabilizers" and it does not melt the second it leaves the freezer. It was obvious that it had just been sitting on the line for too long. So instead of apologizing, getting another scoop, basically ANYTHING, he settled on pedantic cooking mumbo jumbo as the best course of customer service. BTW the tart itself was hard as a freakin' rock and difficult to eat. The pots de creme was wonderful; the peaches course could have been happily skipped in hindsight. All in all, the bill was sky high, which wasn't surprising since we all drank and ate a ton. But that whole unexpected band and dessert course situation left a bad taste in our mouths. This review only pertains to the bar experience, as I have yet to have had an opportunity to try the actual restaurant. The bar at Geraldine's on the 4th floor of the Hotel Van Zandt is easily one of the nicest in town and by far the swankiest in the Rainey Street area. Drinks are priced accordingly with draft/can beers costing $6 and cocktails costing $12. The bar itself is split between inside and outside along the hotel's pool deck, which has a great view of Town Lake. Service is top notch and there are plenty of comfy chairs in which to rest. There is also a great stage where live music plays almost every night (I was quite impressed by whoever was playing on the Tuesday night I was there). read more

Everything other than the 44 farms NY 8oz. was amazing ! Sadly two people including my self ordered the steak and found ourselves eating more of the short ribs and ceviche tacos being passed around! The main reason for not liking the steak was it being severely under seasoned and extremely chewy even when it was cooked medium rare it was like eating skirt steak from a cheap meat market in my opinion! Plus the"béarnaise" paired on the side was just regular hollandaise no tarragon flavor present at all! Complete 360 with the rest of the food though, all extremely savory and not to heavy. I will say the ceviche tacos, fondue and short rib, where my favorite all where ridiculously good and well executed. This place has live music 7 days a week starting 7:30 -8:00pm on regular week days and 10:00pm on weekends. The staff was very helpful extremely friendly and welcomed us to stay and enjoy the music after we ate . Last but not least this is the one fancy restaurant that won't mean mug your family the minute you walk in holding a baby! In fact they have all the accommodations including a gourmet kids menu. Brunch Review: We had made the mistake of trying to get Banger's Sunday Brunch at 11AM and were confronted with a 45-minute wait just to get on the list - uh, no thanks. The Rainey street options are surprisingly limited for brunch, so we called around and settled on Geraldine's. Settled isn't the right word, though, because this place is anything but second place. Geraldine's is located on the 4th floor of the Hotel Van Zandt and only accessed through a relatively hidden elevator. It accompanies the hotel pool, which creates a stellar ambience with incredible views. The space is overall amazing, one of the most beautiful restaurants in Austin. For brunch, I had the Bloody Mary and the Potato Hash with Pulled Pork. Both were really great. I love a salty Mary and this one was also dense and full. It was perfection. The Potato hash was also good. It comes with two poached eggs, four crispy, potato chunks and a small portion of pulled pork. It was super flavorful - a delectable dish that I would try again. My only gripe is that it wasn't a large portion of food. I'm a light eater, so I didn't have complaints, but it wasn't filling enough for a couple of other people who ordered the same thing. The last thing I want to mention is that after brunch, just as the band was winding down, I went to the bathroom and it was really gross. Three out of the four stalls that I tried hadn't been flushed in a while and were full of, you know, gross stuff. My advice would be to check on the bathrooms more often during a busy time! I enjoyed my time here. We sat at the bar and all of the bartenders were very friendly and attentive. It's a pretty swanky place and was just what I needed after being in a couple dives on Rainey street. We ordered the smoked carrots, on recommendation from the bartender, and they were good. It was definitely a dish that I never had, and would order again. The cocktail menu is expansive and there has to be something for everyone. It was hard for me to pick a drink because I wanted one of each. The prices are higher, but, this is also the hotel bar/restaurant for the Van Zandt, which is a Kimpton hotel. So...looked for a nice brunch to take my wife to. Geraldine's had OK reviews, thought we'd try it. The restaurant is located within the Hotel Van Zandt near Rainey. Valet took the car, we sit down and after a decent wait, the waitress takes our order. Here's the order; 1 coke, 1 glass of wine, a hamburger and french toast. Literally two entrees and two drinks. Total after tip? $61.00 We go to leave and I ask the hostess to validate the parking of which she says, "Sorry we don't validate on Sundays." So wait, the other 6 days, sure, but not Sundays. Got it. I go downstairs to the valet stand, and was charged $20 for my car to be parked 5 minutes past one hour. So after tipping the valets, I spent $91.00 on a hamburger and french toast. DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER COMING HERE FOR A MEAL. Plenty of places in town offer better food and a better price. This brunch ended up being a joke. I won't be coming back. read more

** We made our reservation a month in advance for our trip to Austin** I wanted to truly love this place but after my dining experience I don't quite understand the hype. To put it simply, it's an overly priced tapa style restaurant with subpar food, mediocre service, right next to a hotel. We came in not understanding the tapa style menu and each ordered a what we believed to be, an entree each. I chose the wagyu. (which by the way, was spelled WAYGU on the menu - immediately had me questioning the quality of the restaurant when I noticed this spelling error.) My friend tried the snapper ceviche. Let me tell you, the reaction we received from our annoyed server was beyond ridiculous when we ordered our wines and entrees. His facial expression and attitude changed from friendly, to what-the-fuck-thats-all??? He proceeded to then say, "sorry let me explain the menu to you..." After asking if we wanted to try any other options we reluctantly chose hamachi tacos. Another waiter brought out our wines and as he put down a Chardonnay, I gave him a questioning look because I was sure I ordered the Pinot Gris. My friend even gave me a questioning look as he and I both know I don't like Chardonnay. Confused, I took a sip to confirm I heard correctly. Our server never came by to check on us so on the table sat a glass of wine that was barely touched. Our hamachi tacos were the first to arrive to our table. An overly seasoned, bitter squirt of what tasted like lime-y hamachi that had been sitting out in a very warm kitchen took me by surprise. Mind you, the presentation was beautiful. Moving on, upon receiving my wagyu I wasn't surprised when they placed a small 3 oz piece of meat decorated with a sliced potato, oyster mushrooms and purple yam spread. Wagyu is typically expensive and melt-in-your-mouth worthy. Just not this wagyu. At first, I thought the char of the meat was the reasoning for it's dry, tough texture. I was shocked when even the inside cut of the meat was dry and tough. I have to question if they were trying to create a dry aged steak or if they decided to serve us an old piece of meat. Fantastic food, ok bar service The bad: Bartender was inattentive and only paid attention to her coworkers. It took an impressive amount of time to get our drink and appetizer orders in. The ceviche did end up being a bit of a disappointment. The seafood pieces were cut way too small for us to enjoy the texture. The good: everything else. Wow!! Gnocchi was crispy on the outside and pillow soft on the inside. Crispy pork was perfectly glazed with a slight sweet crisp on the outside. Shrimp hush puppies had the perfect soft and crispy balance. Short rib eggrolls were perfect with a balance of fresh veggies, creamy dipping sauce, and sweet egg roll filling (though it did arrive a touch too hot). The plates priced $30 on up were larger portions. - Grilled Carrots: beautifully presented and delicious! - Salted Beats: tasty! - Snapper Ceviche: loved the harissa sauce with the snapper - Cultured Butter w/popover, cracker, country bread & pickles: an excellent starter with a good sized portion of breads, if a skimpy portion of pickled things. - Smoked Yellowtail Tacos: tasty and interesting flavors with taro and candied garlic. - Goat Cheese Cake: So good! And by questions I mean, "what kinds of tea do you have?" "Tea?" Listing a few names he replied, "Ohhhh. Tea." Just bad. The meal took an HOUR to arrive. It was eggs, nothing fancy. Service was so bad, the manager was comping meals left and right. The food...while tasty, proved that not everything is Bigger in Texas. The waiter suggested that I order the Benedict if I was really hungry as the Quesadilla was smaller. ???? The Benedict came with two eggs on what appeared to be half of a piece of bread. A few greens and a sixteenth of a cup of pork and voila! A meal fit for someone who wanted half of an appetizer. The high note? The jazz band in the back was lovely! read more

The space is designed well (despite the copycat tile work which minus the color is identical to that of Bullfight's - see side by side photo comparison). There is a nice open feel. They have a stage for bands to play, different sections for dining, an inside bar along with the outside pool bar that has a pretty good view of downtown, and a "writer's area" which is more lounge like. Service was attentive, the chestnut honey ganache dessert we ordered was well balanced in flavor, texture and was nicely plated. My friend's dirty martini was good and our server made sure it was extra dirty per my friend's request. Well this is where I landed for Thanksgiving as plan B and was not disappointed. Tucked into Rainey Street, inside the posh brand spanking new Hotel Van Zandt on the fourth floor is Geraldine. Believe me, not your typical hotel restaurant. This place is top shelf chic in all the right ways. Awesome views any direction you look. Whether overlooking the downtown skyline, the rooftop pool, the elegant dining room or the fully glass enclosed kitchen. The menu is not huge but everything was so originally prepared and spot on. Quite incredible for only being open a week or two. I won't go on and on about the food. Look at my photos and you will understand. I can say though that the beef short rib was unequivocally the best I have ever had. The wine list was plentiful with nice selections in all price ranges. In fact I found all prices in the restaurant to be quite reasonable. Service was informative, attentive, helpful and just enough. The place is very comfortable in all ways. Kimpton is known for connecting incredible dining concepts to their lauded hotels, and Geraldine's (which is connected to the pool deck of the new Hotel Van Zandt) is no exception. The service is excellent. To be at the absolute top of their game, they'd be smart to improve their cocktail menu, their beer list, and also to rotate their menu on a regular basis (which they may plan to do). Starting with the space. It's ethereal. Beautiful uses of wood and unique lighting combined with a very well-thought-out use of space would make this a space worthy of comment even without a remarkable menu. The views of downtown Austin are beautiful from one side of the restaurant, so try to sit on that side if you can. They also have comfy large low-set booths for larger groups, which allows for a more casual experience if you have more than a few people. You'll want to take pics of your food for Instagram. Or to send to your mom. Ideally, both. The menu is small, but well designed with something for everyone (everyone excludes vegetarians - sorry y'all, not too much for you). Taking hints from Odd Duck and Salty Sow, Geraldine's is taking the best of Texas and classing it up a bit. The plates are beautiful (see Instagram comment), but what's on them is equally as compelling. Smoked Yellowtail Tacos are a sensory journey in the mouth. The Crispy Pork Ribs are a new take on a southern favorite. and the Strip Loin is perfect not just because of the meat itself, but because of their genius take on a potato side (making a cheese fondue in which you dip ridic amazing "tator tots). Try it. This is a great space to celebrate a special occasion with a small group, a second or third date, or a romantic dinner with your lovah. Not ideal for a business meal in which you need to conduct business because it's pretty loud. Make reservations. Dress up a little (you'll feel out of place if you don't).
