We did the panning for gold add-on with the mining tunnels tour. Man was it fun. Super informative and just a great time thanks to Jimbo our tour guide for the whole thing. The Georgetown Rail between Devils Gate and Silver Plume was a wonderful adventure. If you want to enjoy it more, get your ticket online for the first train, get there early before 10 am for better parking and choice of seating (first come first serve). Also don't forget to get a Lebanon mine tour ticket with gold panning. It was a blast. Joey was our mine guide. He was doing this as a summer job to stay in shape for snowboarding. The dude was very nice and a walking encyclopedia! He knew so many fascinating details about the mine history. We would definitely go back after today! SOOOO COOL!!!! This was so much fun and super memorable! The train ride itself was amazing - the views are out of this world with all the trees and mountains and unlike anything I've ever done. It felt like I was at Disneyland but the real-life version. Also did the gold mining and that was really neat! Definitely bring a jacket cuz it gets really cold inside the mine. The tour guides were friendly. At the end of the gold mine tour, you do some actual gold panning. What they do is dump a little bottle of gold in the sandy water for each person to ensure that everyone gets gold and then teach you how to pan it. Then they put the gold in a little souvenir bottle for you to take home. Guaranteed gold for everyone! I would say that the train ride was totally worth it but if you're already all the way out there you might as well go full force and add the gold mining too! read more

We went on this tour as a family of 5 on the Parlor car. We had to get 2 tables. One table with 4 chairs (I think it was $163) and a table with 2 chairs ( $79). Each table had a little basket with kettle chips, crackers, wrapped cheese, 2 individually wrapped chocolate chip cookies, and a couple other little snacks. You get a complimentary can of soda or water bottle. The train literally only goes about 4 or 5 miles per/hr all the way to the museum in SIlver Plume (about 1 hr). When we got up to the end of the railroad, the museum was closed, so we couldn't get off the train. I wish they would have given us a heads up for those who shouldn't have drinks since there's no bathroom breaks for 2 hrs So mow its time to head back down the mountain! The train just reversed so the people on the right side as you enter the train, didn't get to see the other side which had all the scenery...so dont call it a loop if it's not making a loop ‍ Lastly, I would recommend there be more historical information/narration. For a family with small children, it might be a great tour but my 15 yr old was a little bored. For the price, the overall experience isnt quite worth it. read more

This is a great train ride. Takes just about an hour for the ride and gives you a fun perspective of train travel. Get tickets ahead. Several people as we were waiting to pick up our tickets were told to come to a later ride or come the next day. Social distancing in practice. Crew is plentiful and helpful and they take a group photo and then for $20 gets you a "framed" pic and two key chains. We bought ‍. Anyway, well worth it. After years of doing coach class, we splurged on the parlor car for the Santa train. Our waitress, Annie, was a miserable person who made the experience absolutely horrible. The photographer asked if we could all gather around one table for the picture and my 80 year old parents just sat at the closest empty table after the photo. When my young son asked the waitress if he could please have some water, Annie refused him because she claimed my 80 year old parents had moved for the picture. It was very confusing and so incredibly inappropriate. I will be telling everyone I know to stay away from this experience. There are plenty of other trains over the holidays, don''t ruin your holiday spirit with nasty women like Annie. read more

The Georgetown Loop is a fun experience if you're in the area! I've gone both in Spring and Fall and it's been lovely both times. The views are beautiful so definitely bring your camera. You do have the option of getting off halfway through, keep in mind when people get off and come back on some will switch seats so if you like your seat a lot, I would stay on the train. I did go on Mother's Day for one of my trips and it was sold out so if you're planning on going on a holiday, buy your tickets in advance online! The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a fun activity to do. My family enjoyed the train ride and beautiful scenery. IT IS NOT A LOOP. You go from Devi'l Gate to Silver Plume Gate and then back to Devil's Gate. That was okay, I thought the train ride was long enough (about an hour). Plan to arrive EARLY if you want to pick where you would like to sit. Especially if you are in a group, that way you can sit together. It is OPEN SEATING. When you stop at Silver Plume Gate the conductor will let you out for about 15 minutes to use the restroom and look around that station. If you want to keep your seats I would suggest someone in your group stay back to keep an eye on them. Otherwise DO NOT GET UPSET AND OR ANGRY THAT YOU LOST YOUR SEAT. It is OPEN SEATING, THERE IS NO ASSIGNED SEATING. It is very windy and cold. Bundle up. Bring a blanket. I wish I had brought hot chocolate to drink on the train. read more

Beautiful views, great ride, lovely depots... not what I expected. They recommend arriving 15 min early, which we did. Do not arrive 15 min early...you will be at the end of the line and will have to search for a seat on the train. You should probably arrive at least a half hour early. I expected to leave from one station go to the next get off, shop and look around and take photos and then get back on the train to go back. That is not what happens. It took more than 10 or so minutes to board because they take a family photo which try to sell to you later for $20. So you're waiting extra long so everyone can get their photos taken. Once seated we waited at least another 10 minutes before leaving the station for Silver Plume. It was a beautiful and clear day, the scenery was gorgeous! We arrived to the Silver Plume station in about 45 minutes. At arrival they announced that we could exit the train for a quick 10 minutes. Yeah.. 10 minutes! Like we probably couldn't get off the actual train in 10 min because we were the last to board because we only got there 15 minutes early. So we just stayed onboard. Total bummer because the station looked really nice. Going back to Devils Gate is the same scenery as before because the train doesn't make an actual loop. They call it a loop because the design is that it loops around it's track and it's way up in elevation. However on the way back an employee talks and gives the history of the train and the area, which I always find interesting so I did like that. At the Devil's gate station they do have indoor restrooms, a small gift shop, a mine sluice for the kids and not much else. I can't comment on the Silver Plume station. Tips: Arrive extra early, start at the Silver Plum station maybe? It looks nicer. Use the restroom prior to boarding, take your camera, take a bottle of water and snacks. read more

This was an awesome experience. Worth the drive from Denver.(45 min or so. The sight seeing along the way made for a great short drive. Saw this online and decided to book for the early afternoon slot however ran into some earlier traffic and a late brunch we had to push our time back and they were very accommodating. The train ride was very comfortable and there was not a bad seat anywhere. The weather was a wee bit chilly but it was still worth it. The conductors were there every step of the way and made sure to answer any and all questions. Just to see the Locomotive train itself and hearing the whistle felt like a kid again. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, railroad lines played a role getting tourists to experience the Rocky Mountains in this area. The Georgetown Loop Railroad renewed that tradition in 1975 with new tracks, bridges, buildings, and services. These days, the railroad is a family-friendly sightseeing excursion in open-air railroad cars over 2 miles between Devil's Gate and Silver Plume. It took us less than an hour to drive from Denver to get to the free parking lot at Georgetown. You can buy tickets and board at either station. Coach tickets are $27.50 for adults (over 16) and $20.50 for kids. Upscale parlor tickets are $11 extra for adults and $9 more for children, so, none of the tickets are cheap for a family. We got coach seats for 6 adults and 2 kids on the next available train. The wait was about 30 minutes so we hung out taking pics and relaxing by the creek. On-board, the conductor was entertaining while describing history and nature as we made our way across the iconic Devil's Gate High Bridge built in 1982 and past a replica of a mining camp on our way to the Silver Plume station. There, we were able to disembark to explore a small museum and relax a bit before heading back along the same route to the original station. The Georgetown Loop Railroad turned out to be an a-ok, but expensive tourist outing suitable for all ages. The train ride isn't really a loop, but more of a there-and-back trip. I don't know if I need to loop back and spend the money or time to go there and back again. read more

I've done this loop twice now- once in the winter for the Santa ride in a parlor car & in the spring in the coach section. Both are unique experiences. It's definitely something to do that gets you into the mountains yet is close enough to town that it doesn't seem like a trek. For first timers or tourist, know that Georgetown is a small mountain community so if you have some time to kill, walk around Main Street. You can also buy your tickets there. We waited close to 30-45 minutes to board but I could tell some out of towners were looking for other things to do. It's a great ride for the young at heart read more

The train ride itself was fine -- about what we expected from the description. Our grandkids are five & seven and they loved it. The really disappointing part was the total lack of COVID precautions on the train. The website says masks are required but almost no one in our car was wearing one. They had signs posted outside and in the tent while waiting to board, but no signs anywhere inside. There was no one working on our car either so not even a token effort to enforce the law (which is for everyone's safety you idiots!!). Going to report this to the state tomorrow. The rail experience is rather cheesy, but creates a fun ambiance and is perfect for kids. Riding the train and hearing its history was interesting and the scenery was spectacular! In addition to the train, we took the extended Lebanon mine tour with Rachel. She was incredibly knowledgeable and worked well with her audience--playing to our questions with additional facts and stories. I am so glad she was our guide; she really helped us understand what it would have been like to work in the Lebanon mine. I give the experience four instead of five stars because we had to sit at one of the stations for over 20 minutes while new riders embarked and I had difficulty understanding the train guide because the audio system was poor. That's right a native Coloradan and had never done this touristy thing! Let me tell you, it did not disappoint, lots of historic information on the ride and even a silver mine tour, it was so much fun and I am glad that I finally did it, the scenery was amazing too. If you are visiting Colorado or if you live in Colorado and have never ridden the Georgetown Loop, make it a point to do so, it will not disappoint. Randomly found this on the internet and decided I wanted to check it out on our short mountain getaway. We had a 10am reservation in the parlor car. We arrived around 9:20 and checked in. The parlor car was fantastic and had complimentary snacks which included fruit, hummus, carrots and crackers - water or soda and hot coffee or alcoholic beverages for purchase. The train ride was about an hour long and had fantastic views and was really fun and interesting! I'm super glad I decided to do this. Do yourself a favor and get the Lebanon tour addition. The train ride was great, however the mine tour with the guide turned out to be the main part of the event for us, the part that was the most interesting, personable, and memorable. The guides are knowledgeable, passionate and make it so much fun. Don't forget to wear warm clothes - it's chilly. We were there in the middle of May, yet it was snowing at some point in the mountains. Even a pair of gloves won't be a bad idea. 5 Stars for a great experience for children. My little ones loved the ride, they loved the experience, they loved the "chooooooo choooooo". We just went during the pumpkin fest (a Halloween themed event) and it was crawling with kids. I will say it was cold, not bitter, but cold so we all bundled up and headed to Silver Plume for our afternoon ride. We choose to ride in coach instead of parlor, the cost is $10 more for parlor and we did not regret it one bit. The coach car was enclosed (thankfully!), I think because it was part of the pumpkin fest ride. It moves slow, very slow with many photos ops for both passengers and those driving by on the highway. The photos they take before boarding should be nixed. It takes forever to board due to these photos and as I know it's a money maker, photos should be optional and available at a booth elsewhere. Overall, I great experience. Highly recommended for any child. read more

Short but pretty ride. But we went for the pumpkin festival event today, and logistically they failed. It says to get there 20 minutes early to pick up your tickets. We got there 30 minutes early and they told us the lot was full and to wait for people to come out. More than 20 minutes later we finally get a spot, then had to frantically rush to get to the train. Stressful start but okay. The train was full, everyone had to squeeze together for a spot, we literally came early so we could find a spot comfortably for the group, conductor mentioned for some people to find a safe way to stand. We get to silver plume and they tell us we have 9 minutes to all get off the train, hit the gift shop, collect our pumpkins, take advantage of the photo ops, go into the haunted house, get the candy bags, and get the kids faces' painted. I saw a total of 6 littles crying or nearly crying with their parents having to talk them down over there being no way they could get their faces painted and get back in time. Overall it was a bad experience that I would not recommend to anyone. Driving around is better. Or make the drive down to the Durango train. It was a super stressful day, and when workers asked how it was going I said told them there wasn't enough time and none of it made logistic sense and I was stress. No one seemed to care or not even mention that they do have things to figure out. Super disappointing, would not recommend. read more

What fun! Perfect for families! My father in law treated us to tickets for my son's fourth birthday. We purchased them online about three days prior to going. We selected the 10a time slot and arrived around 9:15a. After waiting in line to pick up our tickets, we visited the gift shop and then got line. That's probably the hardest part for the kids. Things ran a little late as there was some technical difficulty that wasn't fully explained. We chose to sit in an open air car as I'd read that it really does allow you to enjoy the view more - which makes sense. So, no it's not actually a loop. You go out and then you come back. But it was quite nice. As you enter the line, they take a picture and then cone around with the prints during the ride. read more

Santa's Express Train captured my eyes as a Christmas journey to the North Pole to explore Colorado's "Royal Gorge". I call this "Railroad Loop Train" A chill/relaxed and breathtaking get-away trip which you can enjoy best as a Lunch / Dinner DATE! Or as a Holiday Excursion with your full family. It takes an hour to pass through all the gorgeous mountains with its adorable lakes and beautiful nature included. At the beginning of the journey you can make pictures with great backgrounds as a souvenir for you to take home. During the trip in the actual "Train" you can officially meet SANTA! :) take lots of pictures through the DOME windows, eat lunch/dinner by your choice and even go outside to enjoy the spectacular nature views! A real Get-A-Way Gem! I give it only 4 stars though because we had to wait in line for quiet a while to get the pictures at the entrance ( the lady had to ex-change the media cords what took some longer standing time for everyone ). In my opinion: Santa could have told a "Fairy-Tale" or sang a "song " to all of us for more entertainment. It would have also been great to have had at least 1 more Waiter to serve food/drinks in order to follow up much more timely with all its wishes from the individual guests. And one more thing that irritated me: At the end of the train ride, I took 1 drink with me in my hands because the glass was still half full when we had to leave. All good, everyone said "goodbye" to each other and conversed in friendly ways, until a lady right before the start of the parking structure came towards me and took my glass/drink away. ( she belonged to the train crew I guess and had to check on each and every individual guest if they all are leaving properly. ) This drink belonged to the fully paid Lunch/ Package we purchased. We were slightly disappointed in the train ride itself. It was a short 15 min ride up one direction then a 10 min stop and 15 mins back down. We expected more of an actual loop I guess. Because of covid everyone was required to wear mask and seating was assigned. Staff was friendly. It was a bit difficult to hear the announcements, could have been because of where we were seated. Four of us went on the train ride and mine tour yesterday. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't perfect...it was raining and there weren't enough inside (or sheltered) seats available in coach since there were so many people on our ascent trip. When we arrived at the first stop - Silver Plume, the weather cleared a little bit temporarily. We chose to sit in the coach section since we were doing one of the mine tours as well. You can't do the "parlor car" AND one of the mine tours. The views are beautiful and the ride is nice. They do give some information over the speaker about the significance of the area's history/views. If you choose to do the mine tour along with the train ride, the stop to disembark is on the way back to the initial station (Devil's Gate station). There aren't restrooms on the train. The mine tour is very interesting; we took the shorter one (not extended). If you are claustrophobic or sensitive to dark, cold, damp areas, pass on the mine tour. I really liked it...but the few kids that were in our group looked less than thrilled. The drive from Denver to Georgetown is about an hour; be aware that holiday weekends will be busier. Plan for traffic. If you want first dibs on seats, get there early to be at the front of the line. We were at the very end and sat outside in the rain. read more

Absolutely wonderful experience. The staff is very friendly and greets guests with a mask covered smile (COVID State Mandate enforces). The engineer was not shy with the bell or whistle, which makes me giddy every time! There is a voice over tour guide along the ride with useful historical and technical details. This is a steam powered train with open air passenger cars. The round trip from Georgetown to Silver Plume and back lasts about 45 minutes. It can be loud near the engine and beware that the back of the train becomes the front on the return trip. Definitely an enjoyable experience. read more
