On short notice we decided to take the train to WIP to do some back country skiing with friends…read more We booked a same day round trip that gave us time to ski and eat and make the train back. Train left denver in time and inched its way thru downtown heading northwest. Amazing views best viewed from the observation car. We had general admission seats so it was good we got there 30 minutes early. Seats were sort of willy-nilly as there were travelers already onboard originating in Chicago. Even then, the observation car was full. Later in the trip we found two empty seats there to watch the scenery. Plenty of luggage space. Observation car is first come first served but no bags allowed in this car. Same for the two-level dining car. Get on, store your bags, quickly check the observation car then depending on what's available get a seat in GA. The trip is two hours and the views are very interesting, even in the city, as you get to see the surroundings in a new and different way. There are restrooms in each car. The trip through the Moffat tunnel is 10 minutes which is where the real time savings is at. A couple of times the ticket master comes thru but otherwise, there are no employees wandering about. The only downside was our return train was delayed as an avalanche had swamped a freight train and blocked the tracks. We got a ride home with friends while others had to just wait it out. Easily a 7+ hour delay. It's sort of Mother Nature in control and Amtrak kept us updated. They also refunded the segment of the trip we didn't use.

There are plenty of places to eat and have a drink in and around Union Station (breakfast spot, coffee spot, at least 2 bars I'm aware of, etc). It really is a nice place to both begin and end trips. It is hard to explain but I'm sure you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it. It is also a nice place to get some work done. There are plenty of places to sit and plug in. Keep in mind that the bathrooms downstairs are open to the public so you may see some interesting things and individuals there.

I love Cooper Lounge upstairs where you can get a classy espresso martini and have an elevated experience and watch the activity below. There is so much going on in all of the various wings of this place! A hotel, other restaurants, at Christmas there is a holiday popup in the basement, a ticketing station, etc! I've really only been to the main area and love the new beautiful installment of Pigtrain Coffee. I love the fancy pistachio pastry dessert at Baumé and the Christmas tree decor this past year was AMAZE. I feel like it represents a standard that people will experience throughout Denver in their travels like if they just arrived there via Union Station or are relatively new. It's a vibe of quality that permeates throughout.

Beautiful wood accents with old style wooden bench seats in the waiting area. The station is handicap accessible with a elevator. But I did not see handicap or wheelchair passengers. I had no issues when the conductor scanned my QR code from the Amtrak app. The conductor gave me a seat tag in coach. I entered car 610, found my seat and waited. The train left on time. One of the advantages of coach is you do not have stay in your designated seat. You can walk around visiting the observation car, the Cafe on the lower level of the same car or when the dining car is open for breakfast or lunch you can show up to be seated. Dinner is more likely to be a private table and requires reservations. They accept cash, card or tap-to-pay in both the Cafe and the dining car. Passengers who book roomettes or private bedrooms get all meals included in the dining car. The Cafe is open more often with snacks, light meals, soft drinks and alcohol. Because they are going thru the mountains with tight curves and at least 38 tunnels speed is reduced. There was a straight section between Kremmling and Granby when the train was probably going 60mph. The trip had 2 stops before Denver. Granby for ticketed passengers only and Fraser-Winter Park where anyone can get off the train for fresh air or a smoke break. Winter Park resort offers a shuttle bus to the ski area.

It's been on my bucket list to ride the Amtrak train and I recently had the opportunity to do so. The station in Glenwood Springs is just what you'd hope to see-wooden benches, overhead fans, musty air inside. This one even has some old-timey decorations that take you back in time. When your train arrives, the conductor will come inside and invite you to board. It's a fairly casual process-nothing as stressful as commercial flying. Some things to note about Amtrak in general: * The trains are often late-download the app to monitor it's status-that is usually pretty accurate * The roomettes are tiny, but private. If you want to sleep in peace without anyone around you, it's a worthy expense. * While they say that ID is required, I was never asked to show any. * There is no wifi on the train. Spotty cell service, depending on where you travel. Bring a book. All aboard!

When the photographer came around, she asked my parents to move to a larger table so we could all squeeze in the picture. After the photo, my parents stayed at the new seats. When my son asked for water, we were all told that we were denied service for the remainder of the ride (another 45 minutes) because my parents had not returned to their seats after the photo, even though they'd never been asked to do so and two children had moved into their old seats when they got up. My 10 year old then had to watch all the other kids having hot chocolate and cookies while he wasn't "allowed" to have anything. The waitress also had the security guard sit with my elderly parents for the remainder of the ride so they didn't get out of line. So humiliating and unwarranted. It was honestly the most bizarre experience we've ever encountered. Santa seemed like he'd been drinking - saying weird things to the kids and to my husband. Very inappropriate. I spoke with Mark, the Commissioner in charge of the Georgetown Loop, and he immediately refunded our money. I do hope they change their staffing to better reflect the beauty and tradition of the experience.

Park at the Jeffco line because it's free and a safe place to leave your ride and not have a hassle fighting for a space downtown. There are two ticket machines; one takes cash and card and the other is card only. So many reasons to ride the light rail! Avoid busy traffic, avoid parking hassles and fees, see some cool sights, have a few drinks downtown without worrying about a DD, and support public transportation!! People watching is never disappointing either. Usually takes us about 40-45 minutes to get to Union Station. My only complaint about all of these stations is they need more ticket machines. This one isn't as much of a problem as Union Station or Pepsi Center where we have waited 45 minutes after an event to get our tickets. But we have missed a train a time or two here because we are waiting in line. Yay for public transportation!!
