The king room in the external building had a very high bed. I found it to be comfortable and the pillows were good too. It has a small bathroom with a small sink and a table with two chair chairs. The water pressure was great. The best part: it is so close to the main street of town so you can have your parking for free and easily stroll to the main parts of Durango where there are restaurants and stores and a great coffee shop. Also, it's a historical hotel that was built in 1898 and so it has a really incredible charm to it. The seating for breakfast and the lobby area are really beautiful. The thing to know: it is right next to the train station in Durango. So if you want to take the amazing train ride (and you should!) you can just walk right next to it and you have your free parking with the hotel room, which is awesome. BUT this also means that you hear the train constantly. It is very loud multiple times a day, early in the morning and in the evening. So just keep this in mind when you book this hotel. The breakfast: the breakfast the day we were there had eggs (watery scrambled) and sausage links and a waffle maker and toast and oatmeal and cereal and yogurt. All of it was the typical continental American breakfast. I really enjoyed the sausage links and the toast. The oatmeal was meh. The coffee was not good at all, but I did drink it haha. If you have time, go to the Durango coffee Company instead. They also have an assortment of teas and hot water. I would give the breakfast a 2-3/5. It seems like they could easily upgrade this breakfast and make it something really worth going to for the price of the hotel. read more

This is an amazing hotel and it really feels like stepping back in time. The service was great, and the location is perfect since it is right next to the train station. Just be prepared if you plan to take a nap or if you have a baby that needs one, because the train is loud and runs almost nonstop from about 7 in the morning until 8 in the evening. The beds were comfortable, and the breakfast was okay. I was expecting a bit more, but the options were limited to eggs, sausage links, oatmeal, and some toast. Love this place and the old Victorian style interior. There are usually cookies to welcome guests in the lobby. The rooms are immaculate and smell fresh and clean when you enter. The stock of toiletries provided are good quality if you forget your hygiene products. I did not have a problem with the room temperature as stated in older guest reviews. We were in an interior king room that was almost chilly in June. Yes, the elevator is small....its an old hotel. The luggage cart and one slim person fit snugly and that's about it. The breakfast has a good selection of hot dishes, to-go items and coffee. During our stay the options were biscuits and gravy, sausage links, eggs (similar to egg beaters), small pastries, oatmeal and toppings and fresh waffles. Our floor also had its own coffee cart if you don't want to go to the main floor. The location is convenient to downtown shops and restaurants. I recommend stopping in the bookstore or take the Durango Silverton train for the day. read more

We highly recommend the General Palmer Hotel in Durango, Colorado! We have stayed at the General Palmer Hotel on many occasions and our most recent trip was fantastic! We planned to trailer our motorcycle for this trip and prior to making reservations, we contacted management to ensure we would be able to park our truck, trailer, and motorcycle in the hotel's parking lot. We were ensured that we would be able to do so. Upon arrival, when checking in, we met with Oksana and Amy at the front desk. While speaking with Oksana and mentioning the parking situation, Amy immediately went outside to help with the parking of our vehicles. She didn't hesitate for a moment to ensure we would be able to park the vehicles with no problem. Soon after, Oksana was outside helping us bring our luggage into our room. The hotel, as always, was clean - from our room to the lobby to the stairwell! It is an old hotel, built in the late 1800s, so if you enjoy history, you will enjoy staying here! We enjoyed the simple FREE breakfast - juice, coffee, Danish, egg/sausage casserole, etc. If you are looking for a more hearty breakfast, we recommend the Durango Diner. But the light FREE breakfast offered near the lobby was fine for us and we enjoyed talking to other guests over coffee. We took the Durango-Silverton Train Ride, so this is the perfect place to stay! If you do not enjoy an occasional train horn, then you may want to look elsewhere - but we enjoy hearing the train! We had the pleasure of staying in the Presidential Suite and the additional living area was perfect for us as we needed to work a bit while on vacation for 8 days. It was clean, comfortable, and roomy! (Note there is another building with additional rooms and there is no elevator in that building. So, if you need an elevator, be sure to ask about staying in the main building.) The hotel is located right in the heart of downtown Durango, making it so easy and convenient to walk to restaurants, shops, art galleries and more! We cannot say enough about the hotel's 2nd floor and 3rd floor patio - the decks overlook the train station, the town of Durango, and you don't want to miss having a beverage while watching the sunset! read more

Upstairs and had a little seating area on the shared balcony. Staff was very accommodating, I wasn't happy with the first room because it wasn't what I had expected. The lady at the desk was happy to switch us to a room that better fit what I thought we had reserved. Breakfast was included with our room. On our trip to Durango I wanted to stay in this hotel for a couple of reasons. 1. I stayed here many, many years ago 2. It's right next to the train station 3. It's on main street, and is right in the middle of historic downtown There are two sayings that come to mind. "Nothing stays the same but change" and "You can never go back again" True the town has grown since I've been here, and it looks completely different, even the General Palmer Hotel looks different compared to the pictures I have of years past. Upon entering it is very dark, very victorian, and very charming.u Let me start out with the positive. The staff was awesome. Very kind, and stealthy. We were given three options for maid service. 1. Full Service 2. As needed or 3. No service. We chose #2 As needed. After checking in we headed to the TINY elevator that can fit maybe 3 people if they are on the skinny side, and definitely not with luggage. After the first attempt we just took the stars, it was faster, and less nerve wracking. When we checked into our original room there was old food, and garbage stuffed into the drawer of the night stand. Obviously this room wasn't cleaned properly, or sanitized for covid. When we told the evening receptionist he quickly apologized, and gave us another room, looking out onto main street, which we inspected right away. Upon entry we could see the room was dirty. The bed was made up, and things in their place, but the carpet was soooo dirty, and the armchair was worn, and you could see dirt on it as well. Coffee pot was dusty. I didn't feel safe to make any coffee in it. Thankfully there was a McDonald's right next door. Blinds/lamps/dresser were dusty. After getting a closer look it just needs new everything. The bathroom had been remodeled, I'd say within the last few years. We were nervous if the sheets had been changed from the last occupants so we inspected them as well. We pulled the mattress back to see if there were any bed bugs. We didn't see any, and it looked like the mattress was fairly new. Lots of pillows on the king size bed. No typical bedspread. We had to use a blanket out of our car because there was only a sheet and light blanket. Our room was on the second floor looking out towards main street. You can hear the train every once in awhile. That didn't bother me as I love to hear the train, and it does stop around 10pm. There wasn't any street noise because the town closes up at 6pm. If you visit any other time when Covid isn't around, I'm sure you would be able to hear the street noise, as the windows were not insulated. On the way down to get some dinner we encountered a couple going down the stairs, this is the one an only time we ever saw any other person at the hotel besides the receptionist. We asked at the desk some recommendations to eat at and headed out the front door. Mind you this town is on lock down, all businesses close at 6pm. Restaurants, and bars can stay open until 8pm but NO inside seating. Take out only. In the morning I was on my way to McDonald's to get some coffee when the receptionist told me that they had coffee available. Great, that will save me from having to get in the car and drive over to McDonald's because they only serve through the drive thru, no inside eating. I had a very nice conversation with the night receptionist for awhile, and then I decided I would sit in one of the drawing rooms, and finish drinking my coffee. I decided to sit on one of the sofa's Whomp! I fell right into the cushion. There wasn't much padding, and what there was, was so lumpy, and uncomfortable I had to move, and move from one chair/sofa to the other. I finally just sat in one of the chairs, and drank my coffee. After sitting there for awhile, and looking around, I could see the dust on the furniture. No sanitizing here. (They do have hand sanitizer, and masks available by the doors.) There is a creepy doll sitting on one of the cabinets, the kind that you see in horror movies, unsettling for me. On check out day my daughter starting packing the car and I asked her to grab me a cup of coffee when she came back to the room. She came back empty handed and I asked her why. She said "They don't make coffee during the week." What? Why? They told her because they don't have enough people staying at the hotel to make it. The breakfast that has been offered in the past, is no long available as long as covid is around. When we got home, is when we realized, we left my grandson's charger to his Nintendo Switch in the room. As a customer service it would have been nice for the management to mail us the charge back or at the very least call us and ask us if we would like them to mail it back, at our charge. Nope, nothing, no communication and a lost charger. Durango is a charming little quaint town with lots of outdoor activities to enjoy. I definitely would come back here after covid. If I do, I would stay at a different hotel. read more

Buyer beware! Recently booked a "standard room" through the AAA website for just under $300 at the General Palmer. When we arrived we were informed that the room had NO WINDOWS. We did not want the room when we learned this, and were refused a refund because we booked through a third party. AAA was also refused a refund on our behalf. Here are some thoughts about this. 1.) I have travelled extensively and never encountered a "Standard Room" that had no windows. 2.) $290 including taxes seems very high for a room without windows. 3.) The hotel does a disservice to those booking by not describing what an interior room means. 4.). If you want to stay at a nice hotel in Durango, stay at the Strater and forget the General Palmer. read more

We stayed in the Palace Annex and our room waslarge, lovely, and period appropriate. Breakfast was very tasty. I cannot say enough good things about the front desk staff! We founds bugs in the room, we had to run the hot water in the bathtub for approximately 5 minutes to get hot water in the sink, and the breakfast was pitiful, compared to the past. General Palmer staff is really helpful & accommodating. Their little tea/coffee bar is super cute. They have chocolate chip cookies in the afternoon. Their breakfast in the hotel is meager, but they do have the option to go to the Lone Spur cafe, half a block away. Their breakfast is ok, definitely diner. We stayed in the annex and the beds were comfy. The heater can be a bit challenging to figure out at first, but it warms everything up pretty quickly. I am there now...room 256 on the other side of the parking lot. Folks smoking and drinking outside the room. Think cheap motel. I was booked for 2 nights. We are leaving as soon as we can. This is simple bate and switch. Every picture (Bookings.com) shows the main building. The only thing "old" about this place is the copper keys they want $20 for if you lose and the ocean wave music maker in the room. On checking in I was told I could cancel my 2nd night. So I did. Then I was told it was up to the manager if I would get a refund. I asked to speak to the manager, and well, not here till tomorrow. I'm gone anyway. read more

The award-winning historic hotel was built in 1898, and is full of charm, nostalgia, reminiscence, and is conveniently located right in the middle of Durango's major downtown restaurants, shops, as well as adjacent to the spectacular Durango-Silverton Railroad Station & Museum. Our room was beautifully decorated - like all the other luxury rooms - and hotel service was friendly, immediate and outstanding. Only downside was the complimentary morning breakfast: the small selection of fruits and cereal were good, but the eggs and sausages were extremely dry; next time we'll get breakfast at one of the numerous great restaurants just walking distances away. Went on a bus trip in Durango and stayed at this hotel. When I first arrived at General Palmer, had a really good impression on the entire hotel. Really cute Teddy Bear collection at the door, old fashion interior but is definitely modified and looks pretty new, the girl at the check-in desk was super sweet. But then, it was rather frustrating experience that it took us 3 times to eventually get our room. Okay we did check in early, but you could've just told us once that I need to wait till 4pm instead of saying 4 times that you will be ready in 10 mins... What irritated me more was...the house of maintenance literally kicked me out 10am in the morning during my last day of staying...OMFG what kinda service was that?! Not to mention the stain on the blanket.... Free WIFI? You do need to ask the desk about the pw. I still really like the hotel, since Durango actually ended up become one of my favorite town and I really do like the hotel overall. But not sure if I would try it again... read more

The TV in our room did not work, the coffee maker in our room did not work, and we were not given the "breakfast pastry" we were promised in lieu of breakfast (we stayed during COVID). Additionally, we were charged $250 for a smoking fee. We did NOT smoke in our room. After alerting the hotel of our concerns, we were promised a manager would contact us. Great location, authentic, and great breakfast (voucher)! This hotel is nicely decorated and even features an old timey elevator. While cute at first, it is quite tiny and can become a bit of a hassle. However, I'm glad they kept it! Our room was clean and the bathroom was remodeled. The closet was a perfect size with lovely bathrobes. The room was a bit small but that was expected for a historic hotel. We didn't hear a lot of noise the whole time; it was quiet. The main issues we had were the pillows (too soft!), the thermostat (which kept the room either too cold or too hot), and the bathroom doorknob wouldn't lock. The first morning of our stay, we had the continental breakfast, which was disappointing. HOWEVER, they gave us a hot breakfast voucher the next morning. This voucher gave us a free breakfast at a nearby restaurant. It was great! The location was perfect: downtown, near the train, close to food, nice window view, a picturesque setting. If you are coming for the train, this is a prime location. We would happily stay here again! read more

Staff are very friendly. It is a historic hotel, room very elegant, bed very comfortable. In the heart of downtown- felt very safe and walking distance to shopping. WOW!!! That is truly the only word that comes to my mind while recalling my stay at this hotel. My wife and I were getting ready to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and decided to make the drive up to Durango. When my wife and I arrived we were greeted at the front desk by an awesome gentleman who's name escapes me unfortunately, I told him my name and he smiled a big smile and said "You're going to looooove your room." My wife and I boarded the elevator that seems to be original to the building with a sliding metal grate and just large enough to fit two and their luggage, it was one of my favorite parts of the hotel, and pushed the 2 button to get to our room. The gentleman at the front desk wasn't joking, our room was magnificent. It had a huge king size bed, a jacuzzi tub, a bar and a huge leather couch. I figured there was no way this was the room that we booked for the modest price that we paid, we are broke newlyweds in college after all. I would later find out that the hotels General Manager Paula had found out that we were making the trek up there for our first anniversary and moved us into the Presidential suite. We stayed here a week and compared to the Strater hotel, I like the General Palmer better. Our heater broke so they moved us within minutes to room 305 I recommend it had two windows, we were very pleased and will be back. So it was a few days before my anniversary weekend (two years with E!) and we couldn't afford a big trip (like San Diego last year). So we decided on a staycation - an amazing dinner from Ken & Sue's that I separately reviewed, and a night's stay at a lovely hotel. It was a toss-up between the Palmer and the Strater, and I picked the Palmer because E has always said he'd love to stay there. Next time, though, I am definitely checking out the Strater. They have a hot tub. What to say about the Palmer...Well, it's gorgeous, for one. I had always admired it from the outside, but the inside is amazing too. It's like stepping back into the 1800s, with beautiful marble and antique furniture and even a stuffed peacock on top of a buffet that always holds fresh coffee! That's the lovely thing that I liked the most - there's always coffee and a little bowl of chocolates in the lobby, and a plate of cookies in the evening for a little nibble before bedtime! The girl at the desk was extremely nice and knew my name before I had even shown any ID. The Palmer gives you actual metal keys, instead of plastic cards, and then gives you two options for getting upstairs...you can hike up the stairs or take their very old elevator. It has a metal gate and nicely fits two people and an overnight bag. It's pretty awesome :) Our room was nice, with comfy off-white linens on the bed, a huge closet, and a flat-screen TV. Thy also have little mini Keurig coffee makers with K-cups for morning coffee. E was thrilled that the machine was a mini version of the one we have at home. They also have glasses for water instead of plastic cups. I'm all about the little things :) The one touch that really won me over, though, is the proliferation of teddy bears. There's a whole two couches full of them in the lobby that always provides a smile if you're walking by, but each room also comes with its own teddy. Ours was adorable, and the only thing that would have made it better was if the teddy bear came with the room. Unfortunately, the teddy bears come with a sign that says "Adopt Me! For $25 and up..." Yikes. That's a lot for a teddy bear! Overall, a very fun and enjoyable experience. I'm so glad that I decided to stay in town for the weekend and enjoy my town, one that so many other people make a destination for their vacations. What a wonderful weekend! read more

Even for the price the room was super quaint, comfy, great bed, and the rustic feel. The entire hotel near made us feel (as we rode in on our enduro bikes from a 5 day trip sans showers) like we were true modern day cowboys holdin' up in a legit western victorian style hotel. Very kind staff, great coffee bar with fresh cookies, and the breakfast wasn't half bad either. Essentially you're paying for the atmosphere, but I dare say it's worth it, especially with a great outter deck view of the old time coal driven train on it's trip up to Quray and Silverton. read more

We chose to stay downtown knowing from reviews on Yelp that the train was close. Forgot reviews to request an exterior room for a window! Cloister phobic in size and we quickly got hot. Ceiling fan did not work even though we figured out the small slide dial was on the wall light switch to the fan. Called down to the front desk for a repair and he forgot! Dang-- we sat in the room waiting for repairmen's arrival wasting precious time for touring the town! Finally left the room asked at the front desk and realized clerk was apparently stoned, bellman apparently also partook because he was just as loopy. Made it through a hot night and thank goodness the competent female agent in the morning took care of us and changed our room to an upgrade at no extra charge. Much better set up in the smaller annex building with a king bed. Had to hurtle in though because of the very high bed and during the night bathroom breaks meant moving the step stool between sides which is impossible in the dark! We were unable to take showers because the water was brown. Full of dirt. When we informed the front desk they told us it was a problem with the city water. They compensated us with a gift card for a free stay at the Palmer house within the next month but since we live more than 1000 miles away, that gift is meaningless to us. The room was nice.
