I was here when the first opened. I made it a point to go to all the gens. Even in different states! They are in a very busy location across the Costco. This gen is like every other gen. Cheap prices for lunch and A LOT of options. Its still 21$ for lunch and 31$ for dinner. There are so many appetizer options and you can even do add ons for special meats that will be an additional charOK. The meat isn't the greatest like the chubby group, but with this price, and since I only ever eat beef belly, is fantastic to me! Its nice and big inside woth good ventilation. All the gens nearly have identical set ups. I didn't like the service here as they are really slow and got my order wrong a lot. Also, sometimes what I asked for didnt come. I've been to plenty of Korean BBQ spots, and unfortunately Gen has really gone downhill. First off, it was HOT inside. No AC, and there aren't vents above the grills, so all the heat and smoke just sits around you and blows in your face while you're trying to eat. Korean BBQ is obviously going to be warm with a grill at the table, but this was just uncomfortable. The service didn't help. It wasn't even busy, yet it was taking 10-15 minutes just to get basic things like a drink or napkins. Our waitress also kept forgetting things we asked for, so we had to keep asking again. What's also disappointing is how much they seem to be pushing all the extra stuff now: take-home sauces, snacks, etc. It feels like they're more focused on selling you something else than just providing a solid Korean BBQ experience. I can overlook slow service when the food is worth it, but the quality here wasn't good enough to make up for everything else. Between the heat, smoke in your face, poor service, and subpar food, the whole experience was disappointing. Gen used to feel like a place you went for Korean BBQ. I am dusting off my Yelp pen and paper to warn people from coming here or any other Gen restaurant location until corporate and management figure it out. Preface: I do not blame the line staff (servers, bussers, kitchen workers, etc) because they don't know what they don't know, and we can't expect staff to do a good job when there appear to be no quality guidelines or expectations in place from those actually in charge. Bussers were bussing and servers were surviving. Chapter 1 - Food: Everything came out messily and with zero care and taste. Meat was presented dangling off the plate, with strips of pure fat included with the beef belly and galbi as thin as a piece of paper. Banchan/side dishes were given with sauce spilled onto the sides, overly sweet and with a slight funk that can't be explained as fermentation. I could not taste potatoes in the potato salad and the green tea salt was wet. The soybean soup tasted like water with some soy sauce - even the zucchini in the soup was not cooked through. Chapter 2 - Service: I truly believe our server tried, but you can only do so much when your section for the night is half the restaurant. Drinks were not refilled, meats came out before side dishes and drinks, and grills were left to burn in between changes. All the while, managers were seen chatting it up in the corner of the restaurant, bar staff waited around an empty bar, and another employee spent all their time walking around trying to upsell jello pouches to customers. Chapter 3 - Ambience: Ventilation who?! Gen doesn't know her. You could see the clouds of smoke stagnant around the restaurant. The checkbooks were sticky and the plates dirty. Parting Words: If only a fraction of these things happened tonight, you could chalk it up to a bad night. I've worked in restaurants in high school and college, and I know what it feels like to work during an off shift and have customers assume that this is what it's always like. However, I firmly believe this is not the case here. This is a systemic issue that is likely the result of corporate neglect and mismanagement and a management staff that is not trained and/or held to expectations. The service was lacking from the start. We had to wait for water, and our food actually arrived before we received our waters. There were also two separate menus, with one being an upgraded option that I wasn't interested in. My understanding was that if one person chose the upgraded menu, the entire table had to do it, so our whole table decided to stick with the regular menu. The biggest issue came when I ordered shrimp. I told our server that I wanted an order of shrimp (five shrimp). She then asked if I wanted the Cajun-seasoned shrimp. I don't work there, so I had no reason to know that this was a different option with an additional charge. I said yes, assuming she was simply asking how I wanted the shrimp prepared. I was then charged extra for those five shrimp. Ten dollars. The server should have clearly explained the difference and the additional cost. Something as simple as, "Would you like the Cajun shrimp? That is an additional charge, or would you like the shrimp from the regular menu?" would have avoided the entire issue. If a customer is ordering from the regular menu and you offer them another version of the item, you need to clearly disclose that it costs extra. I shouldn't have to know the restaurant's menu structure or pricing system to understand that a simple "yes" to a question about seasoning is going to add money to my bill. Plus I thought you told us we couldn´t order off the upgraded meu. Overall, the confusing menu setup, lack of communication, and slow service made the experience disappointing. read more

I've been here a couple of times, but after my most recent visit I'm not sure if I'd return again. On the plus side, it's a pretty good value for KBBQ, and the meat quality is decent for the price. That said, service during my last visit was very slow and the restaurant didn't feel very clean. The floor under our table was noticeably slippery from oil, and the ventilation system didn't seem strong enough, so a lot of smoke lingered in the air while we were cooking. Food-wise, everything was okay overall. The banchan were good, and I liked that they offered rice paper. However, the rice paper took quite a while to come out. My favorite item is the hotteoks -- I always end up ordering at least four for myself because they're that good. Overall, it's an affordable KBBQ option, but the service, ventilation, and cleanliness could definitely be improved. read more

Excellent service from Sebass!! He works hard and is on point. There was a shift lead or manager who also changed out of his business attire to serve & buss which was cool to see. These two gentlemen worked well together to give everyone great service. We did the standard dinner and boy oh boy there are lots of options to choose from! Went around 11:30, there was no wait so that was nice & plenty of parking options. You are assigned a server but you'll also have a different person bringing out your drinks and a different person bringing out the food all to ensure that you get your items in a timely matter. We did upgrade to the premium dinner options which allowed us access to a few signature things( it was definitely worth it) the Wagyu melted in our mouths. They did add a few more options to their sides menu as well. We got our hands on some Bulgolgi fries and whatever sauce they used was the perfect blend of salty, sweet with a little spice, that was pleasant, but could have used a little more cheese. We gave them 3 tries and really wanted to hook them up with 4-5 stars but this place is extremely slow and so stingy when they come to the servings. The quality of the meat is great but the service is just garbage. I only came here because it was near the house and wanted to save the time driving to Wang Cho or U-Grill. I guess after giving them 3 tries it's worth spending the extra 20 minutes to eat at a Korean BBQ spot where the service is amazing. For an example I asked to bring all the meats upfront already but they can only do 2-3 servings at a time when it's a party of 5. And the serving is so SMALL. Its only enough for 2 people. We used to really love this place, but today was pretty baaaaad! We had the worst service we've ever experienced here. Everything was extremely slow, and we had to follow up on our orders multiple times. The stove was cooking super slow, and the rice was very mushy and wet. We were already cooking our meat, but our sides and sauces still hadn't arrived. We had to ask multiple servers before finally getting them. Honestly, everything just seemed to go wrong today, even with the manager present. The place wasn't even packed, and there were plenty of staff around, so I really don't understand why the service was so slow. Unfortunately, this won't be our go-to place anymore. First of all, this is not our first time dining at Gen--we've been to several locations before and usually have a great experience. Unfortunately, this particular location in McKinley, Corona was very disappointing. The service was horrible. Our server was rude, not friendly at all, and didn't even smile. If you're in the service industry, basic respect and courtesy go a long way, especially when dealing with customers. Sadly, that was completely missing. We also spoke to the manager regarding the brisket, which was tough and rubbery, but she didn't seem to care at all. No concern, no effort to resolve the issue. To make things worse, our server went on break and told us someone would cover--but no one ever came to check on us or take our orders. We were left trying to get anyone's attention, and even when I was clearly waving for help, the staff ignored us. Orders took forever--at least 10-15 minutes each time--even though the restaurant wasn't busy. My husband asked for a Diet Coke refill and it never came until we had to ask again. We love Gen Korean BBQ, but this location was a huge letdown. Poor service, lack of attention, and no accountability. I've been to plenty of their locations but it actually my first time at the Corona location which is the closest to where I live. I went with my lady and a close friend of mine. We arrived around 1PM for their lunch all you can eat special. The place was really dead and we weren't acknowledged for 5 minutes or so. We only knew they were open because there was one couple eating. Positives: Food was good and that might be the only thing Negatives: * Small portions that we ate quick after cooking. STINGY . * We were given the check and told "No Rush". They proceeded to rush us by asking if the check was ready every couple of minutes. I've never had to wait almost 3 hours. We put ourselves on the waitlist. They said about two hours, which is fine, but then we waited outside for almost felt like an additional hour. There was four more people tell us, but yet people were still coming in and getting sad while we were still forth on the waitlist we had to keep checking in with the hostess trying to figure out why we haven't moved in 30 to 40 minutes. So finally, we went back in there and said this is crazy. This is not OK and they finally sat us. Never had this issue. The Rancho location is definitely better in terms of the wait. Not very well ventilated, or cheap out on their AC. It felt hot and muggy. I wish they would crank up the AC, especially when it's triple digits weather. This is difficult, the servers hands are tied to serving every dish. Im currently sitting here with my meat cooked and finished but the sides havent arrived. Other kbbq spots have a salad bar where you can get your own so you can enjoy the food. But dinner hour is ridiculous. The grill is burning the table is full of dishes and the server cant get to us. Once you get your sides they're tiny. Youll finish them before the meat is cooked or you cant enjoy them together. I have to ask for salt and oil and everything is just lagging. I do not recommend Gen for anyone who has a passion of KBBQ and has to wait for their desires to be filled. Eating here is like watching football. Took my daughter out for New Year's Eve dinner and she wanted Korean bbq. Gen was one of the few close by that was still open so we made the drive. There was no wait and we were quickly seated, took about 5-10 minutes before our server came to take our order. The meat order came out quickly. But there's something to note, usually when you order, your banchan (side dishes) comes out before your meat. It didn't come until we asked for it and were on our second order of meat. The rice bowl and dipping sauce didn't come out either. Truly was a let down and made the dining experience less enjoyable. There's a ton of Korean bbq out there ready to take your hard earned money. Honestly, this was probably one of my worst experiences at GEN, and I hate saying that because I actually go to GEN pretty often and have always enjoyed telling people how cool and fun the experience is. We arrived around 6:30 PM with a party of 4, two of whom were visiting GEN for the first time. When we arrived, there was no host, so we waited a couple of minutes before getting checked in. We were told the wait would be about 15-20 minutes, which was totally fine. At 6:38 PM, we received the text that our table was ready, and we were seated around 6:50ish. Three of us ordered drinks: an Arnold Palmer, Shirley Temple, and a Brown Sugar Milk Tea with boba. Around 7:10, the Arnold Palmer and Shirley Temple came out, but we were told they were still working on the milk tea. At that point, we ordered our first round of food: brisket, asada, pork belly, Hawaiian steak, KFC chicken, pot stickers, four sides of rice, and sauces. The rice came out quickly. The brisket and KFC came around 7:22. I asked about the milk tea again and was told they were still working on it. Around 7:30, the asada and Hawaiian steak arrived. I asked about the pot stickers and was told they would check on them. About five minutes later, the pork belly came out. I asked AGAIN about the milk tea and was told it takes time because they make it fresh. Okay, I understand that things can take time, especially when a restaurant is busy. But at this point, we were approaching an hour. Around 7:45, we ordered another KFC and still had not received the pot stickers or milk tea. The second order of KFC eventually came out, and the server brought refills for the Arnold Palmer and Shirley Temple....but still NO milk tea and NO pot stickers. So we asked again. The server told us he would personally bring the pot stickers out himself. Honestly, at that point, I didn't care WHO brought them out. I was wondering why something we ordered almost an hour ago still hadn't arrived , and WHERE was the milk tea?! Then he comes back... without the milk tea or pot stickers. Instead, he brings us a plate of KFC and tells us there was an extra plate made in the kitchen and that we could have it. Okay, thank you, but could we PLEASE get the food and drink we actually ordered almost an hour ago?! By around 8:10, we were completely done eating. The grill had been turned off, and we were just waiting to ask for our check. Guess what finally comes out? The pot stickers. And a couple of minutes later... the milk tea. At that point, what were we supposed to do with them? I completely understand that GEN gets super busy and that things can take time, but an hour for two items is just ridiculous. Delays happen, but there should still be some communication and consideration for the customer. He could have at least offered us water while we waited, or even comped the tea since it took so long to come out. By the time we finally received it, we were already done eating and had to take it to go. It's just disappointing because a little communication or a simple gesture could have made a huge difference. read more

I've been to Gens all over Southern California but this is my first time here in Corona. It seemed to be more spacious and less "smoky" than others I've been to. We made it on a Thursday around 2pm so we saved some money by getting the lunch menu. Ordered the dumplings, and tried the little sweet pancakes for the first time. TLDR: It's an established franchise that has rested on its laurels. If you want a KBBQ spot, this is an option. However, I won't actively choose to come here. Food: I think what makes this restaurant disappointing is that the food is just okay. I've been to many Korean BBQ spots in my life, and a place like Gen should never be middle of the pack. Heck, the place charges like they're up there. The brisket was dry, and the beef belly was 75-80% fat after the first batch. The sirloin is a meal saver, but you can only eat it so much before you start wondering if it's the only good beef option. Pork belly was fine, and the shrimp was okay. Service: I'm not a fan of the rule of "4 orders at a time," and only the staff can take orders. We were a group of 4, and it took the busy staff in a full house at least 15 minutes to get back to us for more orders. We would go through 10 minutes sitting on our hands, wondering if the 90-minute timer would be observed or not. Thankfully, they didn't, so we actually got to eat food for 4 people. I don't blame the staff, and I don't blame the manager. I blame the system. Ambiance: It's whatever you'd expect in a korean bbq spot. So this was my first time at a Korean Barbecue and I loved it! Our party of seven came out and occupied two grills. Aside from the pork marinated in red wine (absolutely phenomenally delicious btw), I thought that the meat was a little bland. We had three dipping options but I don't feel like they fully brought out the flavor. My boyfriend tried to grill them a little differently each time, but our favorites were the previously mentioned pork! The service was exceptional. Your typical ayce kbbq... one of the few you can find in this area. Unfortunately, you will smell of smoke afterwards. Pricing isnt that bad as well. And it's pretty normal for what it is. I've tried Gen in multiple places including Arizona, socal, and even in Asia. It's basically a franchise. Food wise, dinner has a lot more options but is pricier. Lunch wise, it's not too bad. The service can be a hit or miss. There are some wait staff that would really make your experience wonderful while others are just there ..... So once you enter, they have long tables and booths.... You go up to the reception and basically line up. Once you're able to be accommodated, you get to pick your meats and sides and some appetizers. Not bad .... you use a qr code to see the menu as well.... If you're in the area it can tickle your itch but of course OC / IRVINE/ Buena Park is a better location for better kbbq restos read more

The location is very clean inside . I liked the mix of short and tall tables as well as large and small booths . Service was friendly and items came in a timely manner. We chose the AYCE premium . I appreciated the crisp side salad along with the sides and extra plates. The choices were good, even a nice selection of appetizers that are included . The bulgogi was my favorite - it has great flavor and was tender . The steak however was almost inedible . It was extremely tough ... the corn cheese was also lacking ... I was given a very small amount of cheese that doesn't melt well for dipping . The Soju capri drink was fun to look at but very sweet so it wasn't for me but the beer was cold !
