First time coming here. Food was decent. Looks like a typical Japanese restaurant here in the US. Ambiance was extremely loud. It was hard to have a conversation with the family. Service was ok. There was a wait to be seated, and a waitlist upon entrance. But tell me why the waitress/manager/employee took the people that just walked in the door first vs the people that have been waiting on the waitlist. I didn't appreciate that. And wish I would've said something sooner. Other than that, servers were nice and attentive.

Gen Kai has been a staple in the DP community for over 40 years. Generations of patrons can be found dining here on the daily basis. I love this place, and it is my favorite! I came here to celebrate my favorite gemini's bday for a lunch date. Serving meals from 11am-2:30pm one can find amazing service here. They reopen from 5pm-10:30pm for dinner. We opted to sit inside the main sitting area instead at the sushi bar so we could order items beyond sushi. Both of us wanted the korean short rib dinner plate instead of the lunch special and it was awesome! Our meal came with miso soup, salad, rice, and our main beef short rib. We decided to add a serving of crunchy rolls. 10/10. I ordered warm green tea, cold for the bday girl. For the birthday girl, they were kind enough to bring ice cream inside a fish waffle type bread with "happy birthday". The bday girl loved it. The meal was $73.00 roughly plus tip. Would definitely come here again. Hot tip: parking is located around the building. When you see the UPS store, you cant make a left. Wait until you see the light, then go around back.

Nice neighborhood sushi restaurant. They've got a sushi bar and plenty of tables as well. My table ordered the garlic edamame and spicy tuna crispy rice to share. The crispy rice was okay, not my fav. I ordered the dana point roll which was spicy tuna with seared salmon on top which I thoroughly enjoyed. They have a lot of other options on their menu aside from sushi as well.

Really great Sushi, and wonderful service at the bar. We ate so many different things. I couldn't even tell you what dishes we chose. Went with another couple who had been there many times, and pretty much ordered everything for us. Would definitely come back, now that we live in the area Presentation was also nice and the fish was definitely fresh.

Gen Kai used to be the place for sushi. We were regulars and all the chefs knew us. You could buy them drinks and it was raucous fun every week. Okay, sometimes we'd get a chef a little too sloshed, admittedly. We came back after a long time gone and now they have signs saying don't give the chefs drinks, boo. I get it but still, boo. Our chef was clearly the new guy. He didn't know half the menu items and was too stressed to be conversational. We'll come back to try again. The bill was a bit high but I ordered some fun stuff and brought four people, so okay. We will try again and see if we can get an experienced chef next time. I have missed Gen Kai.

I came back here to give them another chance and I was still underwhelmed. It's disappointing to have a good sushi close to the two best resorts in Dana Point. Positive comment, it's such a cute restaurant and I did like the cucumber salad.

We came over to this little sushi place quite by accident. We were actually headed for another place that was closed at the time that we were having lunch. To our surprise, this place was quite busy, but they had a table for us . This sushi is not fancy . I feel like the quality is good. The service is very quick. As far as sushi goes, it's a little bit bland for me . But if you just want decent pieces of fish. This is a good place for that. There is parking around back there's street parking but it's sketchy. There is no patio it's all inside .

I've been here before, a long time ago but still has great food. I got the sukiyaki and it's prob one of my fav places to order this. A lot of spots make it too salty or too sweet but this place had it made perfectly. They give you a lot of tempura in the mixed tempura dinner and unlimited rice refills haha. Check this place ouuut!

I ended up here in the middle of the day while working in the area. Never been before. I try to avoid chains when I can and pick something new each time. This place caught my eye, and I'm glad I walked in. It's a small, family-run vibe -- and I mean literally. Looked like a husband and wife running everything themselves. They were both super polite, calm, and you can tell they really care about the food and about every guest who walks in. No rush, no attitude, just warm hospitality. I went with something safe for me -- ramen and salmon sushi. And both were just... really solid. Not overcomplicated, not trying to be something fancy. Just good food made right. The broth had depth, noodles cooked right, and the sushi was fresh with balanced flavor. No complaints there at all. The place itself is small. Not a big dining room. A few tables inside, clean but definitely more of a takeout-focused spot. They don't have a restroom available inside, which kind of confirms that they expect people to grab food and go. And honestly -- I would. Not because it's bad to sit there -- it's fine. But this is the kind of meal that hits even better sitting somewhere by the ocean with the breeze. I'd definitely order takeout from here and eat outside by the water next time. I paid around $30, which is very fair for the quality, especially in California. They do ask about tip at checkout before you get your food -- that part always feels a bit weird to me, but I get it. Overall -- 5 stars for the food and the heart behind the place. I'll remember it. And I'll be back -- probably to pick up a to-go order and take it straight to the beach.

The sushi rice tastes good and I appreciate how the rolls aren't stuffed w/ rice to make up for the lack of fish. I especially like the Aloha roll, Lollipop roll, Crunch (shrimp tempura) hand roll, and the sashimi & carpaccios are all fresh. Love how you can get pickled wasabi (real wasabi) for a reasonable up-charge. All of their salad dressings are made in-house too! Great place for a quick & casual bite to eat. We happened to stop nearby and decided to look around this plaza. We were starting to get hungry and Glasspar looks like the most appealing option so we decided to check it out. HAPPY HOUR: Mon-Thurs 4:30-6pm, Fri-Sat 4-6pm. Wow what a deal. I normally don't think about happy hour deals on Saturdays but we were pleasantly surprised. It was 5:30pm already so we had to make some quick decisions. Chad was very friendly and helpful with our order. We decided to get a Dozen and a Half Oysters (HH $3/each), an Oyster Shooter (HH $5), Duck Fat French Fries (HH $7), 1/2 lb Steamed Clams (HH $13), and Seafood Poke (HH $12). The specialty cocktails were such a good deal I wanted 2 but asked my boyfriend to order one so I don't look like too much of an alcoholic. I had the White Sangria Spritzer (HH $12) and a G3 (HH $12). Everything came out in a reasonable amount of time and Chad communicated checking on things for us as we were waiting. He was really on top of it. The oysters were awesome! My only regret was not ordering more. For the dozen and a half came with 6 of each of Baracats, Stingrays, and Pacific Plumps. I thought the baracats and stringrays were mild. My favorite was definitely the pacific plumps; it was sweet and creamy with a good bite to it. The shucking was also really well. I just want to give them that credit. The oyster shooter was strong, in a good way. Tasty! The duck fat fries were nice and crispy. It came with a rich truffle aioli. The steamed clams were good, but the slice of bread they gave us with it was burnt to an inedible level. I also would have liked a spoon to sip that garlic white wine and butter liquid. Clams were fresh. The seafood poke came with crispy wonton chips. It was decent. After our original order we decided we wanted to finish off with somethings small, so we got the Clam Chowder ($14). I would have liked it a smidge thicker in texture but the taste and the quality of ingredients are on point. I get the bacon essence and a good amount of clams in the soup too. I'm really glad we added that to our order. I also really like that the check comes in books. Chad told us that we can write a note in it if we want. They look at it like a way to interact with their customers. So cute!! We are DEFINITELY coming back here!! Next time I'll order even more oysters :)

I had just come down from the club lounge and remembered that I had a complimentary voucher given at check-in, which didn't specify what it covered on it. I first asked at the lobby bar and no one was able to provide a clear answer, so I went next door to Raya and asked again before ordering. The hostess told me I could choose anything and even recommended the skirt steak. She was kind and friendly. Taylor took my order, and I reasonably assumed there had been communication between staff. So I spent some time ordering and waiting and when my food arrived since I asked for a to go order, I grabbed the bag, tipped, and left. Then Taylor ran after me at the hotel entrance asking how I planned to pay -- in front of other guests. It was an extremely uncomfortable and bizarre situation. I didn't realize what has happened I was just handed the bill and I put my room number and name down. I was then told the voucher only covered guacamole, which directly contradicted what I had been told prior to ordering. As a result, I wasted approximately 40 minutes of my time, I was simply trying to head to the beach before departing, and instead found myself dealing with a situation that should have been handled internally and discreetly. When I handed the food back and said I did not want it, the response was "ok, I'll toss it," followed by no acknowledgment, no apology, and no effort to resolve the situation. At this point, this is no longer an isolated incident. For a restaurant positioned as fine dining, the lack of internal communication, consistency, and basic guest handling is surprising -- especially when every other outlet on the property demonstrates a significantly higher standard. Raya was the only part of the experience that felt misaligned with the rest of the hotel -- and unfortunately, it's the last impression I'm leaving with.
