Probably the worst dining experience we ever had. The only thing that saved us was our server who apologize for the incident. There was this old Asian guy who was arguing with everybody, talking really loud and making a scene. He seems like he doesn't care whatsoever because he just kept going and I feel bad for the other server that he was yelling at. Best thing about this Chinese restaurant in Geneva is the name of course. Gen Hoe also has some pretty good food and not just the typical Americanized Chinese menu. It may be one of the oldest such restaurants and certainly looks like it has been around for a long time. Has cocktails so it's got some classiness to it. The prices are pretty okay but higher than the strip mall cheaply made places. A long time favorite for those wanting that classic Cantonese. It's not authentic obviously but it certainly beats Panda Express garbage. The outside looks worn out and the inside isn't any better to be honest. Has plenty of room inside for big parties and groups. It's got a happy hour where it's about $7 for martinis. Even so, we came mainly for the food. It's about $13 for an entree, but thankfully it's big portions. She got the Kung Pao Tofu. A typical looking version of it. I got the classic Szechwan Tofu. Full of flavor. This has green, red, and yellow peppers in a homemade chili sauce. A crap ton more to get. They also have dim sum. A lot of reasons to come back. They may actually have too many things on the menu, which could explain why people complain about service. For sure we have to come back and try more things because there's a lot. We've driven by this restaurant several times on the way to Geneva downtown so stopped here this past Friday. It was definitely not all it was cracked up to be. Drink-wise - we got the Mai Tai and the Gen Ho special. Good fruity drinks that definitely had a kick. For starters - we got the shrimp rolls - which I thought were fine - providing you added the spicy mustard sauce. My hubby was not a fan of them at all. For entrees - we got the Ma La Double Delight (beef and scallops) and Great Khan Mongolian Beef. Both dishes said on the menu they were spicy - and even put it in capital letters. Uhm - not at all. We kept adding the mustard sauce or anything to add spice to it. I truly hate places that say "we're spicy - watch out!" but then no spiciness at all. Ignoring that part - my husband did not like the scallops/beef dish and I wasn't thrilled by mine. It was okay - but nothing we would ever go back to. read more

We visited a second time in the last month. The chicken kow was a bit salty, the servicer was ok, not attentive at all, charged incorrectly for tea, which should be included. The server brought us a bill with just the total written on it, I had to ask for a detail bill, and on top they added 20% which is not the correct practice for two people, instead it's a choice that we as consumers should make on the appropriate percentage and depending upon the service. read more

Horrible experience this evening when I ordered a large carry-out Gon Bow Gai Ding chicken for my wife and I asked it to be MILD. My wife doesn't like spicy food and when she found it to be spicy, I called the restaurant and the owner advised me that it was my fault. She said it comes spicy, hot, or mild which is still spicy unless I ordered it "NO SPICE". She then offered to remake the dish but she would be charging me. I replied, "I've been going there for decades (which she knew) but you'll never see me again". So instead of training her staff when they take the order and the customer states, "mild", to ask if they want some spice or no spice, she blames the customer and charges for their error. read more

The gravy was made with that same horrible smelling and tasting oil and the Egg Foo young patties had this oil inside the patties. Could not eat this crap. Don't bother with this restaurant on a holiday. We placed an order on Christmas Eve. We were told the order would take 2 hours . We arrived past the 2 hours and they told it would still be another 40 minutes. They ran our credit card and then one hour later they told us it would be yet another 40 minutes. Placed a take out order 7/20. Ordered Mongolian beef, Empress Beef and mooshoo pork and egg rolls. We ordered late picked up about eight. The only thing good was the egg rolls. The Mongolian beef was nothing like They served before - only mediocre at best. The mooshoo pork was large hunks of pork and it definitely was not empress beef that they provided. Gen Hoe Restaurant in Geneva, Illinois offers some of the best prepared Chinese food in the area. The wait staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The prices are wonderful! Mrs. Lee, the owner, is very welcoming. The egg rolls are delightfully crispy on the outside with a shrimp, pork and veggie filling! The won tons dumplings, shrimp toast and shrimp rolls are excellent choices. Their Special Fried Rice is filled with shrimp, pork, vegetables and is a delight! We decided to try this restaurant for lunch today. The egg rolls were pretty good, but the main dishes we ordered were just ok. We both felt like the chicken taste and consistency were similar to the vegetables in the dish. The chicken was easily cut with my fork, so I'm assuming this may be an msg issue. Our waiter and the staff were all very courteous, but I feel they could do a little better with the food quality. Very nice restaurant plenty of parking and handicap accessible. Cloth tablecloths and cloth napkins make the atmosphere a little more upscale. The food is cooked made to order which means it is served hot and fresh. The servers are very attentive and you get exactly what you ordered. We had the youngest of the gentlemen serving and he could not have done a better job. They have a back room that can handle large parties. While we were there they had a baby shower with 50 people back there, however we wouldn't have known it based on how timely our food came out. read more

Gen Hoe is a Geneva Institution know for good service and high quality food. I normally prefer Thai food to Chinese cuisine but I always stop here for the Vegetable Egg Rolls. The Egg Rolls here are amazing.They are about 2 dollars a piece . Someone was picking up an order of 72 Egg Rolls when my husband ran in to get our three!I cannot deny it I could eat these Egg Rolls every day for dinner. My family loves coming here but I don't come here too often. This is Americanized Cantonese cuisine. This is not authentic. As an Asian American, we were the only Asians in the restaurant and this was on a very busy Friday evening. We ordered egg rolls, steamed tofu stuffed with shrimp, and a bird's nest with beef. Egg rolls were big, fresh, and tasty. The steamed tofu stuffed with shrimp is more like tofu with shrimp on top. Tofu was easy to cut, nice sauce, and shrimp was flavorful. This pairs well with white rice. The bird's nest with beef was a let down. The nest was too hard to cut, I had to use a knife to help break it apart. If you get this in Chinatown Chinatown, the nest is very easy to break with a spoon. Beef was cooked a little too long, not as tender as I would like. Portions were plentiful. Parking was easy to pull in. As Americanized Chinese food goes, this is mediocre for downtown Geneva. Your best options are to go to Aurora/Naperville for better quality Chinese cuisine. read more

Let me start with say the glassware on the table wasn't clean and I had to search surrounding tables for a clean glass. I ordered an appetizer that had pot stickers, egg rolls, crab ragoons and steak on a skewer. I found that the egg rolls were very greasy and the pot stickers didn't have a lot of filling. There's a group of us from work who go out to lunch several times a year, and the retirees continue to join after they're done working. Today one of our group suggested Gen-Hoe after going there with his family. There were eight of us and everyone was pleased. We used to go to restaurants in Chinatown years ago, and it's been hit or miss in the suburbs, but everyone was happy with our food today. It's very hard to find fried scallops in the Midwest, and it's getting harder and harder to find spare ribs in Chinese restaurants, but Gen-Hoe hit a home run on both accounts. Second sit-down visit and we again started off with their delicious egg rolls (prefer their standard to their chicken filled). The pot stickers did not do it for me this time, didn't care for the pork and the two dipping sauces were a red vinegar and chili sauce, I prefer more of a ginger sauce. I think I'm just out on pot stickers in general. My wife ordered the veggie lo mein but the noodles were not what she expected, and perhaps that's because they gave her war mein instead, as indicated on the receipt. I ordered the sesame chicken which had good flavor, but as is typical, was over breaded. It also showed a picture of the sesame chicken plated with broccoli on their menu, however, it was not served with broccoli, just some green peppers & onions (both of which I detest). Their menu is pretty extensive though so I'll go back again to try another dish or two to pair with the egg rolls. Prices are very reasonable for the portions and the interior has a nice vibe to it. read more
