It was hard to get into ~ Not handicap friendly. Service was very slow, the guy that was sitting and taking orders seemed to be able to do only one thing at a time. It took him a while to get around to taking our order. One person was there just to get a coffee to go after waiting for over 10 minutes he was ready to leave. Cute ,cozy little place right across the street from our hotel, the first day I ordered the enchiladas, with a mango tea, they were delicious, my husband and father in law loved their food as well. We went back next morning for breakfast, the eggs Benedict are one of the best I've ever had,the potatoes were perfect, (ask for extra crispy) . We loved our dinner at Gema's Cafe so much that we returned the next morning for breakfast! I definitely loved Gema's fajitas! I chose to have mine with all three proteins: steak, shrimp, and chicken. I liked all three of them, but in order of preference I would choose shrimp, steak, and then chicken. The shrimp was off the charts tasty! I was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of shrimp. Many times when you have a mix, they give you the least amount of the most expensive ingredient. Not at Gema's. Although the serving sizes looked smaller when they arrived, we were sufficiently full when we were done. It was just the right amount. For dinner my hubby enjoyed the Chicken Diablo. There was a choice of three levels of heat. While we were there, we took a look at the options for breakfast and decided right then and there that we would return the next morning. We both chose the Egg Enchiladas that next morning. These consist of 2 scrambled eggs, bell pepper, and onion rolled into tortillas and topped with ranchero sauce and cheese. These come with a choice of fruit, cottage cheese, or home fries. We both chose home fries and then I add a side of cottage cheese, because it just sounded so good together. I was correct. The home fries were great on their own, but I loved the ranchero sauce so much that I requested a little on the side and topped my potatoes with it. Oh. My. Goodness! Yes! I also enjoyed their Strawberry Lemonade for both meals. It is a really small cafe with amazing food and great service. We will definitely return. read more

Meh. I love breakfast, but this place was just average. It has the usual breakfast selections, but nothing special. I got the strawberry waffle, and it was a little soggy and a little bland. The waffle didn't seem to be homemade, so that was a little disappointing. This place was open for dine in even amidst Covid, so that was nice. Service was solid and fast. We were in Beatty today and stopped at this little cafe today for coffee and got a whiff of the kitchen and stayed for lunch. My girlfriend had the breakfast burrito and was quite pleased. It was very tasty and no French fries stuffed inside but potatoes. I had the chicken Diablo which was tasty. It was nice to get frijoles olla over smash beans. Had high hopes going in but soon was super disappointed WORSE tasting and TINIEST espresso ever, not to mention the food servers fingers all over the rim of the espresso cup & it was literally 1 Oz of espresso. Stopped here for lunch on the way to Las Vegas and had a nice time. It's a very cozy little restaurant and wasn't very busy when we were there, but the food was good and fairly inexpensive. I had the Wet Burrito with chicken and it was great. The chicken was tender and the sauce was flavourful with just a little zing. My boyfriend had the tamales and loved them. Gema's is one of the few places to eat in Beatty. In town you choose pretty much between this and Happy Burro. Travelers might consider packing a lunch. For Beatty it must be good enough. You can pretty much serve anything here and know there's nothing anyone can do about it. It has a good location at Beatty's main intersection. It's across the street from the casino. The casino looked closed, as do many businesses around here. Needless to say there's not a lot of competition. Only one other restaurant in town. By the name it sounds like a kind of bar and Western themed place. It actually turned out to be a family owned Mexican restaurant. Actually, it's a restaurant owned by Mexicans that has food from their country along with American breakfast items. It also is very small inside, which isn't too much of a problem because there's no one else there. A crazy thing is that the menu is a carbon copy of the El Valle restaurant in Amargosa Valley, literally all the same items listed in the same places. Maybe the same family owns both restaurants. If so, they put more effort into the other. The staff there is pleasant. Here they make you seem like you're a burden. The menu doesn't have much vegetarian but there's breakfast items like bagels and omelets. It sucks there's few places to eat around here. Happy Burro is probably the best option. Hubby and I were driving through Beatty and had looked up and found Mel's Diner which we wanted to go to because of the name, we were sad to see that it was closed, so we happened to see Gema's and after checking the reviews, we decided to stop. They have a large parking lot that is important when ya drive a large truck. The place looks run down and we were not entirely sure what to think since there is a food truck parked against the back wall, but what the heck, we went in anyways. Inside is run down too with 2 booths and 4 tables. We were greeted right away and told we could sit where we want. Waiter was pleasant, gave us menus, took our orders and brought drinks pretty quick. I had a pleasant surprise on the menu, they have an egg salad sandwich! I haven't had one in so long and when I did I made it myself! I ordered the sandwich with fruit and home potatoes, hubby got the breakfast burrito with home potatoes! Both were exceptional! Sandwich was wonderful, fruit was fresh and very refreshing and potatoes were cooked to perfection. I had a case of "cabin fever" the other day, so hubby and I took a drive to Beatty, NV. It was a weekday, and I must say there is basically NOTHING to do in Beatty, other than a few restaurants. I swear the place, at least the buildings, all look straight out of a ghost town. Surprisingly, there was a Denny's, a Motel 6, and even an Eddie World. However, we didn't want to eat a chain restaurant. We saw Gema's Cafe while we were driving through town and decided to stop in for a bite. It's very homey and compact. The menu has many options, the bulk of the items are all Mexican food of one form or another. I opted for the pork tamales and my husband chose the fajitas. There is nothing fancy or pretentious about the place or the food. It was just like food you would make in your own kitchen, Tasted homemade and simple, and very reasonably priced. I like supporting small businesses whenever I can, and I enjoyed Gema's Cafe. We would go back again, if we were in the area. Wish I could give it a higher rating because it's obviously a small family-owned business, but the food was pretty bad. First of all, took forever to come out although the place was almost empty. When it did come: the refried beans were cold in the center and lukewarm on the outside (improperly microwaved if I had to guess) and the meat was unbearably salty. The coffee was terribly burnt. Poached egg was hard. The waiter is talkative and attentive but not "friendly" in the standard American service sense which is probably where the bad reviews about his attitude came from. As readers will no-doubt be aware, there are few options for breakfast in dear lil' Beatty. When I went on New Year's Day 2020, there were even fewer with Mel's Diner being closed. Having passed by Gema's numerous times on my way to Death Valley, it was time for a stop-in to fuel up for the day's adventures. David, the owner and host, was warm and welcoming. When we inquired, he spoke proud of his family-run restaurant and the surrounding town. He gave us ample insight into sights&sites to see, ghost towns and museums to explore, travel time estimates, and more. The hospitality displayed, on a holiday no less, was an exceptional and pleasant surprise in this whisper-quiet town most just cruise through. We followed his advice later in the day and enjoyed much of the area's history we might not have seen otherwise. His conversation and maps alone were a great value. But, to the food! Aside from the soda dispenser in the dining area, Gema's feels like you're at home, or rather visiting someone's home, and you're being treated to quality, low-cost home cooking. I had egg enchilada (with just enough heat for an intolerant whiteboy to to appreciate, and incredible sauce sopped up with homefries from my companion's dish) and bottomless coffee, and for dessert a killer flan. I'm not ordinarily a flan fan, so I like to get it to see just how well a place does their thing. Gema's does their thing expertly. Good flavor, better texture. A nice plate to share.
