I found this hole in the wall place in Beatty town 10 minutes to the west entrance of Death Valley National park (30 minutes drive from the Furnace creek visitor center). I entered the restaurant & I couldn't find anyone at first but I decided to give a try. Menu has American breakfast options and they do have a separate menu for Mexican foods (Tacos, Burritos & Tortas) I ordered 4 Tacos (Asada, Al pastor, Carnitas & Chicken) to go. It took about 10-15 minutes. I took it back and pulled over my car at the west entrance of the park. I enjoyed/destroyed the tacos instantly. They also gave a mild and hot sauce. Great little spot for breakfast or lunch. We did breakfast, wife had a waffle which she said had great flavor, I had a breakfast burrito. The latter had lots of potatoes, which may or may not be to your liking but I thought it was delicious. The tortilla was nice and flaky. At first glance it looks shabby. Door is filthy. An easy clean for a first impression. Inside is cute decor with 5 four-tops. Seems clean except for the overhead vents in the ceiling. . Again. Our server (only one on and when we walked in it was just us and two other groups but got busy fast) seemed either very disinterested or just struggled with conversation but did a good job keeping up. Food was ok. Not the best. Not the worst. My first time having eggs Benedict so I can't tell if it was cooked correctly or not. Sauce was tasty but egg had zero texture and muffin wasn't crispy. Ham was very thin. Hubby had the Spanish omelet. Veggies were undercooked. Both our hashbrowns needed a bit more sear and his toast was soggy. We stayed overnight in Beatty and this restaurant was right across the street from our motel. After reading the reviews and menu ahead of time, we were excited to try it, but unfortunately the experience was disappointing. There appeared to be only one waitress handling several tables, and another table hadn't been bused, so they seemed short-staffed. We stood in the doorway for about 10 minutes with no greeting or acknowledgment. During that time the waitress walked back and forth helping other guests but never said hello or that she'd be with us shortly. She also had an earbud in, which gave the impression that what she was listening to was more important than greeting/waiting on customers. When we finally asked about the wait, we were told it would be another 10 minutes, so we decided to leave and go to Denny's instead. read more

Came here after a long hike and absolutely devoured the Cali Burrito, which was delicious. I'm a big fan of crispy fries in burritos, and this one did not disappoint. The pricing here is very good, where you can get a number of items without spending a great deal. So I ordered the burrito and a smoothie. This is a chill, local spot. WOW....this is definitely a little mom and pop restaurant. Not much else in this town, so we stopped for a late lunch. I've read the other reviews and totally disagree with the words being used: "cozy, cute" are NOT words I would use to describe this place. We ordered, ate......and then I used the restroom. My first thought was....please don't let me get food poisoning or some other horrendous ailment from the food I just ate. This place needs a good cleaning!!!!! If there wasn't a stop sign in Beatty, CA, that made you turn to keep on the freeway, most people would blow through it at 75MPH and not think twice about it. It just so happens that located on the west side of the stop sign is Gama's Cafe. I had a turkey sandwich with fruit, and my wife had the Cobb salad. All things considered, Gema's Cafe is a 4 star. I know it was a turkey sandwich and salad, but they were both really good for what they were. The bread was fresh, and the sandwich was just the right size. We saw some great reviews or displaced and decided to give it a try. It is a hole in the wall, but they have outstanding food, great service, and overall it is a place I would come back to. I had the breakfast burrito with three types of meat in it and I could not even finish it. It was so big. My wife had the wet, shredded beef burrito and she just raved about it. This review is for the taco truck in the parking lot, not sure if it's the same food (although they do have some menu items). Needed to refuel on my long drive home but didn't want to take a lot of time. I ordered asada fries and carnitas torta. The torta on its own was 5 stars. Perfect size and everything tasty. The fries were a big disappointment: minimal meat, the canned cheese sauce that gets cold in 2 seconds, and minimal sour cream. I watched the guy use the rest of the sour cream in the bottle (maybe a tablespoon) and continued to bang it trying to get more out. He failed and that was that. Also the salsa was lacking flavor and spice. Salsa is a very personal opinion but this wasn't it for me, didn't even use it and that's saying a lot. read more

We found our way here for breakfast as there are limited options in town and their menu and reviews looked like something that we could enjoy prior to starting our hiking adventure in Death Valley. I chose the Bacon and Cheese Omelet with cottage cheese and sourdough toast that was just what I needed to start my day ~ yummyy!! I want to share about this beautiful side of fruit (and please check out the picture) it was actually more like a Fruit Plate with banana, pineapple, jicama, tangelo, and melon ~ absolutely delicious!! So why 4-stars...staff had a visitor inside the SMALL dining area that they along with the cook proceded to make a few loud speaker cell phone calls during our dining experience that seemed to be of a personal nature. Mind you normally I don't mind what someone does or doesn't do on their phone - especially a business. But when there is ambient music, and they are talking so loudly that the small space has now become everyone's business it rather takes away from the diners peaceful experience. Overall food was yummy, service good, ambience ehhh...would I go back, sure...I have a feeling that this was an off day and not something that the speaker phone thingy doesn't happen often. We stopped by Gema's on our way out of death Valley national park. The food and overall experience was overall okay. I ordered the club sandwich and it came out with very VERY thick slices of ham and no Turkey whatsoever. It was edible, but not anything I would want to eat again. This tiny restaurant in Beatty is about 30 miles from the Ranch at Death Valley, where we were staying. With COVID, the food spots at Death Valley are only open for Take-out. While I don't have an issue with paying for good food, I have an issue with paying good money for mediocre food. Yes, I understand that they are located "out in the middle of nowhere" and it does cost more for transportation to get items delivered. I have not been happy with National Park Fare since Yosemite Park and Curry Company lost the contract in Yosemite. Not that their food was fantastic either but at least more reasonably priced and with better selection that I've found with Xanterra here in Death Valley, Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Parks. Delaware North and now Aramark were and are not impressive in Yosemite either. But I digress. This review is supposed to be about Gema's. We walked in and all of the tables had guests except for the one in the back corner with the dirty dishes on it. We were told to wait a couple of minutes while the server, took a couple of orders, served water and coffee and then found time to clear the table for us. We were given menus and we both asked for coffee. She ordered Cheese Enchilada's which came with Country Potatoes. I got a Spanish Omelet which also came with Country Potatoes and my choice of Wheat, White or Sourdough Toast. Both meals were delicious, filling and inexpensive. Just what you want in a breakfast place. Skip the bells and whistles and get down to the food and starting your day! I love supporting small family restaurants and I understand they make die with what they have. Especially during Covid-19 times. Let's get to the good part. The service was excellent. We took it to go and we were the only people in the restaurant. The son/server was very pleasant and courteous. The not so good: We made a big order for about 8 people and I'm not sure the cook/mother was ready for the rush so it took a bit to get everything done. Probably about 20-25 min. But there was Netflix so the time passed by fairly quickly. Food was fair as well. I don't want to sound like an ungrateful diner, but we ordered a pollo a la diabla plate and came out with white sauce that resembled and tasted somewhat like a Thai curry. A bit on the sweeter side, but the spice level was right. My wife ended up getting chicken street tacos that were a bit dry and had Black pepper on top. A big disappointment was finding out there was no salsa given with the tacos. I guess we shouldn't just assume salsa cones with the order. You'll have to make sure you ask! Just not something water used to I guess. Anyway, my wife and I were thrown for a loop with the different Mexican flavors served here. Ok the plus side, they're going to open a small taqueria truck in the back of the Cafe. Maybe we'll stop by if we come back around to Beatty again. read more

What a great pit stop for real food on a long drive. We had a twelve hour drive from Lake Tahoe to Phoenix. Nothing but junk fast food and we found this little place. They had a good selection.
