We went to Gem for a holiday meal. It's a small and quirky place with fabulous service and good food. We chose from a set menu that gave us unlimited wine/beer/soft drinks as well as a bunch of different dips and snacks. As others have posted, the bread is fabulous. The hummus and other dips were wonderful. And my favourite of the snacks served was the squid, which was perfectly cooked. We took full advantage of the wine & beer deal, and I have to say that they never stopped bringing us what we asked for within our time limit. Service was spot on as was the food. It's a must try on Upper Street.

New FAV spot to eat on Upper St and go to for Turkish food. Food is excellent in terms of quality, taste, portion, and price. And to top it off, staff was so friendly and nice; great service. Adding on to the other reviews re: lady that makes and brings you bread at the beginning of your meal- SO delicious. It's the Silqok (spinach/onion/herb stuffed bread, £2.50). It's not oily at all. Very soft and hits the spot as the perfect appetizer before your meal. Plus she hand makes it, can't beat that. Ordered the Trebiano white wine bottle(£13.95). Just as the description describes it- Very light and crisp tasting. Opted out of the 6 meze dip option. Saw the other tables ordering this and the dip portions were tiny. So instead, chose 4 dips separately and the portion sizes were much better. Humus, Tabule, Kisir- Excellent. Personally wasn't a fan of the Bakla as it was 90%yogurt. Beans were sprinkled on top. Was expecting more of a bean base as opposed to yogurt. But it was tasty, nothing wrong with it. The meats were all great. I usually don't eat lamb because of the strong gamey taste...but I had a bite of the lamb and it was very subtle, moist, and tasty. I would order lamb here! The chicken from the Tavuk Shish was moist and nice chunks. Also, ordered the "oven specialty"- Tavuk Guvec (Diced chicken breast stew w/veggies). It was so good! Great place with great service. Will frequent this place.

This Kurdish restaurant on Upper Street is just a short walk from Highbury & Islington station and, in my opinion, the best the area has to offer. There is a choice of incredibly cheap set lunch and dinner menus or the opportunity to order whatever you desire from the main menu. Beware though: order the hot and cold mezze menu, and you will a) see very little of your table for the sheer number of dishes and b) definitely not want a main course (especially if you plan to savour the delights of the complimentary baklava). But Gem isn't just about quantity; the food is so fresh, varied and tasty that you want to come back again and again!

    Delicious bread!

But let me tell you...this is SO much more than just another kebab shop! I wish I could tell you what we ordered, but I can't. Mine was a stewed lamb atop hot bits of pita and slathered in their house sauce (like sour cream.) Oh good lawd IT WAS SO GOOD! Also equally delish was the hummus and pita. Service was super, food was amazing. Do yourself a favor and visit! I wish we were locals so we could eat our way through the entire menu. P.S. They do Uber Eats/new delivery if that's more convenient for you!

OMG! So much food…read more Between the 2 of us, we ordered 1 main course (iskander kebab) and 3 starters (sausages, imam bayildi - stuffed aubergine and falafel). The food was all super tasty, but we had so much leftover! Both of us had skipped lunch and were having early dinner, but we barely put a dent on the amount of food that arrived. As soon as we ordered, we were brought Turkish style bread lovingly buttered and 4 different dips (hummus, minty yoghurt, cheese and a tomato one). This itself would have been a sufficient meal for us both. The falafel came settled on a bowl of hummus. The side salad with the main arrived in a plate of its own. Service was very fast and the lady serving us was lovely as were the line of chefs we passed by on our way in and out. When you peep through he window, it looks like a tiny kebab place, but they have really comfortable seating at the back. Some of the other places we wanted to eat at in Camden on a Friday night were completely full, so we entered this place on a whim, but left completely dated and satisfied.

No reservations. This is the best "Best Mangal" in London. It might have been a lucky night. That…read morewe were extremely famished. But no matter. I will hear no word against it. It's the best! We decided upon this place after a pool tournament at the nearby hurricane rooms. Having both been knocked out in the first round, it was quite a fortunate circumstance as we wouldn't have discovered this place otherwise! Upon entering the place was well lit and clean. It wasn't in the least bit smoky unlike some Mangal's that absolutely leave you smelling of charcoal. There were only two other tables taken so I thought it might have been a wrong move... Our orders taken, straight away we're brought the complimentary turkish bread and dips that all mangals normally serve. Quite often this bread is cold and chewy, or given with a nasty dip that smells a bit off. Not here. The bread was warm and super yummy, and a good portion of it too! I absolutely stuffed myself on this because the dips, of which I don't know the names, were so good! Remembering that we still had out mains to come, I stopped. But at this point I was around 50% full! Our mains come out and boy are the portions gigantic. Lots of meat, extremely fresh looking and tasting salad and your choice of fries or rice. With a thin pitta as the base. There was oil in the doner chicken, but not as much as you normally find. It was very tasty. The chilli sauce, wasn't that hot, but the flavours were full and a welcome addition to the slightly charred moist chicken. As we were about to ask for the bill, (note: Earlier to this I had heavily complimented the staff on how good the food was) they were exceptionally gracious in offering us some complimentary turkish tea and delights. That was a nice touch and perfect end to a perfect meal. I honestly felt like a guest in somebody's home, as all the staff from the cooks to the waiting staff were super nice and friendly. This is apparently a chain (same owners), with another in Shoreditch which I've visited. But it's nothing close in either food quality or staffing at this branch. So it's fair to say they only share the name (along with many dozens across London) Give this place a visit if you're around King's Cross Station and looking for a quick bite. For just over a tenner, you're sure to leave stuffed and more importantly happy. Now isn't that what life is about.

Also they have a set menu for office workers during the week..
