    Mix Grill Special
    Jing Shyang Y.

Authentic Turkish Mangal (which means barbecue and explains why there are so many!) The food is cooked on a massive charcoal grill at the from of the main restaurant. If you're sat in this area, beware. You will end up smelling of charcoal by the end of your meal. Larger groups are say in a secondary part of the restaurant. Thankfully far enough away from the grill smoke. The place is super busy and full. There seem to always be people queuing for the tables, so booking is advised for dinner. Prices are quite expensive for Dalston, so there must be something special right? Well, not really. Here is why. The turkish bread served that is complimentary, is served simply plain. No dip or sauces. None that are included anyway. Plus the mains will set you back £10-20. Not cheap for charcoal grill. Best Mangal I, in West Kensington is cheaper than this, even for the mixed grill. Disappointing. Secondly, the meat itself. The meat itself is quite small and stingy. No doubt, you won't leave hungry, given all the bread and free salad, butt the meat is unconvincing in both quality. When you arrive for instance, there are really juicy looking lamb medallions in the display. However with the mixed grill special costing £17.50, you are given a single bony piece of lamb cutlet. However not to be a negative nancy, the meat there did taste great. Nicely charred. The highlights are that the place does BYOB, so you can get cheap drink from the newsagents nearby before arriving. However, remember that this place is popular, so as soon as you finish your dishes, you're kicked out because they need the table for another group. In all honesty, try Best Mangal in West Kensington. Much better bread and meats along with some delicious looking desserts. Plus better value for money.

Great Turkish food and as much service and you can get on a Wednesday afternoon. The Mixed Kebab plate was golden.... Quail, Chicken, Beef, tomatoes and chillis.... the Eggplant appertiser is amazing... You sit down and are given a plate of fresh bread to dip into all your food. Huge amount of food for two and a reasonable bill golden

This place is an institution in the area and I do love it. But this review is for their new pop up Mangal 1.1 in bedroom bar in Shoreditch. Launching new at Bedroom Bar is Dalston Turkish institution Mangal 1.1 so had try a little bite of Charcoal grilled goodness dying their soft launch last week. Lamb shish & Lamb Chops w/ a side of cacik sauce and breads they were both good but I can't help feel the prices of over £10 for each are bit overthetop. Esp as a frequent regular to a lot of Turkish eateries in green lanes and east London. For same price I could normally get a platter feeding you for 3 days! So due to pricing not quality I would say it's good but go to original or one of many on green lanes to get your Turkish fix.

Great place if you are looking for a no frills just food (or meat) experience. We ordered a mixed grill and lamb ribs which where very nice and came with salad. The service was okay, we had to remind the waiter that we needed drinks and when we asked what wine was available we where told Turkish red or white. We opted for the red which wasn't very good. The food was nice and the restuarant was full, we managed to get the last table. I would return again.

    The grill!

We were on our way to another restaurant up the street and we all decided we could no longer be bothered with walking, that's when Sömine appeared in the distance. We decided to gamble and eat here instead. This is when laziness actually is beneficial. The staff here is so friendly and funny. You were served with the complementary items and given recommendations based on our eating preferences. My fellow veg heads we can eat here! They have several items on the menu that cater to vegetarian boundaries (vegan I'm not so sure). I forget the name of what I ordered but it was almost like a meatless and pastaless lasagna. It was de-lish-us! The place is a bit small with the tables fairly close to each other, so be careful when moving around. Luckily for us, there was one other party there so we had room to stretch our limbs. I would definitely recommend this place

And given that I was practically a novice to this area, I whipped out my phone to consult the opinion of my fellow Yelpers as to where they suggest a starving bloke should find consolidation for his stomach. Sömine popped near the top of the list with overwhelmingly good reviews - amongst others, one by Lizzie G, whose reviews are generally superb! I walked along Kingsland Road, with its mixture of ethnic supermarkets, trashy clothing stores and fried-chicken shops. But the further North you go (towards Stoke Newington), the more the area seems to become "cool", as you can find hip restaurants and coffee shops for the yuppies and hipsters that slowly, but surely seem to "gentrify" this area. Sömine is as low-key as it gets - in fact, it resembles a cheap cafeteria of my long-gone university days. But let's turn to the food for a minute: they mostly offer stews, which are on display already from the outside. The guy behind the counter explained to me the various flavours/ingredients and in the end decided on a vegetarian stew and a stew with minced lamb and aubergine. He ladled them both on a soup-plate and on the side he served me some pickled vegetables and rice. (I specifically asked for the rice to be served on a separate plate.) What I liked best about my dining-experience here was watching the kitchen ladies making Turkish raviolis right there in the restaurant (see photo). For some reason, this act of making food right here and there, made me believe that all their food is made with a similar passion...

He was eating some kind of soup and immediately knew that I wanted that too! I asked him what it was and he said that this was the kind of soup that his Mum made for him on cold days like this...well perfect! The soup, which was a rice-yoghurt soup with oregano and chili sauce, arrived shortly after and it was really what I needed at that time. I was served warm bread and a typical side salad along with it. (Update: a Turkish Yelper saw my photo of the soup and sent me the following compliment: my favourite soup.. name is "yayla corbasi ;) Once I'd finished my soup, the nice waiter approached me again and inquired if I wanted anything else to eat. I asked him to recommend something to me and he said that being from Adana originally, he'd recommend Adana Köfte. The raw köfte went onto the grill and after they were done the arrived on my table...along with a few more side salads: onions in a reddish sauce as well as an onion-salad. All was very delicious. True to Turkish hospitality, I finally received a Turkish tea, which rounded up my meal quite nicely. So, if you're willing to entrust yourself to the staff when it comes to food recommendations, you're in good hands here!

I was enjoying a late night (drunken, let's be honest) meal with three, come four fantastic friends, devouring a £12 bottle of white wine, (someone get this girl a straw!) and shoving hummus and lamb shish kebabs in my face at dangerous speeds. 3D glasses were involved, as were some incriminating photos with some overly powdered Turkish delight. I think quotes like "That's what she said" and "your mom" may have slipped in among my infamous Scottish and Irish accents. (They're truly amazing, you should hear me say "Carrrrehmel" juxtaposed with "They're magically delicious!" This also launched a few references to Toucan Sam, which were equally enjoyed by the Irish, Scottish and American group. Nearing the end of our hummus, haloumi, cack and kebab, Evelyn received the ominous text "Michael Jackson Died..." to which, logically, we decided to confirm by asking the waitstaff who had been trying to usher us out for the past 20 minutes. The only things confirmed at the meal were that #1.Anatolia Ocakbasi was indeed magically delicious and cheap, and that #2. If MJ did die, we blame the boogie. (I wasn't able to catch his name but he was wearing a black NY Yankees hat) He was very friendly, checked up on our table throughout the evening, and even escorted us out upon our departure. To be honest, I'm visiting from Las Vegas and service in the UK (and all over EU) is so different compared to home. However, the staff here definitely reminded me that you can get the same great service in the UK. The actual set up of the restaurant is great. It's fairly large, and extremely clean. The restroom was spacious, and even had a diaper changing table in there (this is definitely hard to find in the UK). Also; the restaurant itself is disable friendly, the entrance door is on a ramp, and there's plenty of space to go around the place with a wheelchair. Ok so the decor wasn't trendy - it was essentially faux-wood tables crammed into a large rectangular hall - but that wasn't what we needed. We ordered starters to share (free additional bread with the tzatziki much appreciated) and then various versions of their shish. Unfortunately I hadn't considered all the extra delights that come with a main course - a mountain of delicious salad, salsa, bread and more - and was essentially stuffed before I reached the actual food. Ordinarily in these circumstances I'd advise ordering less, but the friendly staff were happy to give us our left over wraps packaged up. Along with the food I also took away the knowledge that tzatziki is pronounced with a G. So in summary, visit Urfa Ocakbasi, order more than you need, feast for days on delicious Turkish food!
