Visited 08/01/2019 We came here for a repass, so this may not be the most accurate review I've made. All I know is the food was decent and not off the menu as you might have guessed. They started with ziti alla vodka, which I thought was pretty good. Other's at the table weren't that crazy about it, but they're not writing a review either. The entree options were chicken francais, veal saltimbocca or salmon, which I believe was poached. I went with the veal saltimbocca, which was good, but the veal itself was kind of meager and covered up with way too much mozz. I know some of you may be thinking, "there's no such thing as 'too much' mozz", but I'm trying to watch what I eat and I just didn't feel like eating that much cheese. The wife had the salmon as did a few others at the table. (I didn't know everyone there, so again, I can't 'speak' for them" They offered a variety of small desserts (cheesecakes, tiramisu and a few others) which were all pretty tasty. Decent place... Don't get fooled by the decor or exterior of this restaurant, this past weekend I had the pleasure t check out this spot and did not know what to expect as you walk in you're greeted by friendly staff and once you walk in you realize this is not what you expected. There is plenty of parking so not to worry, you can find parking in their lot or on the street, they accept cash or credit and they have a Mens and women's bathroom between the two big rooms, they do take reservations and also have a big party room for celebrations. Owner needs to change the rules of a fixed menu from 4-6 pm Mon thru Thurs on their website. It is a completely different menu then they claim... false advertising! You can't choose the apps stated on their own website under fixed menu or some of their entrees aren't available too! The owner who answered my call was rude and didn't seem to care what I was saying... he started to say I don't charge you for the containers and packaging to go.... seriously who says that? When i mentioned you need to change your website then.. he said it cost money. What? Again... this is false advertising! Then he decided to simply hang up on me... Wow... I really love their food but to treat people like that on the phone was so uncalled for and simply unprofessional. He has serious anger issues and I get it... we are all in a pandemic and they are losing money... but don't treat people that has always supported them through this entire pandemic like sh*t! How rude! So unnecessary! Very disappointed! Goes to show you.... you're nice supporting them since the beginning of pandemic and this is how I was treated. Even after telling him my mom had heart surgery last week and wasn't able to go. And that we had just ordered yesterday with the website menu. Celebrated a fortieth birthday party in the party room. The service was outstanding and the food was terrific, and lots of it. We had calamari, vodka pasta, eggplant Rollatini, salad and clams casino. That was just appetizers. Then we had veal Saltimbocca, (or chicken parmigiana) served with delicious veggies and potatoes, and the Italian deserts were great. To me The Resturant inside is more like your mothers dining room , it has a great home feel : Shhh: it's a BYOB The staff are great And always attentive , Also believe the manager is always on the floor to make sure everyone are well taken care of. The Resturant is like a true Italian / Latin dining room so don't expect it to be all whispers - You will feel at home : Calamari was perfectly seasoned and Not over fired , the oil used was clean and new Lasagna: only complain , wish it had a little bit more meat. The tomato sauce was fresh and didn't taste sweet or store can bought Pollo alla Chris : its a must !! It's like chicken parmesan , however with spinach and vodka sauce ; very good - nice portion size Chicken was moist and tender , the fresh cheese was extremely good - The penne pasta it comes with was perfectly al dente made : You will never be rushed out , the staff here are great and always deserves more than a 22% tip . My family reserved a private room for a party of 35-40 people. This was our first time hosting a family event here and had no idea what to expect... BUT the service was incredible! There were two servers for the entire party. Normally, you'd expect the service to be sloppy with bigger parties but not here. They were quick, attentive and very efficient. I dont think anyone had to ask for anything more then once. The food was equally impressive. Assorted antipasto served family style followed by a four course meal. - Antipasto included Fried Calamari, Eggplant Rollatini, Mussels Marinara, Caprece, Clams Oreganata, and Brushetta a Modo Mio. Being a seafood lover, the seafood dishes were my favorite! The seafood was fresh and very well flavored. - The Mixed Green Salad with tomatoes was average. The mayonnaise dressing was a bit overpowering. - The Penne Vodka was a classic done right. - For the entree, your choice of Chicken Francese, Veal Rollatini or Salmone Al Vino Bianco. The Salmon dish was light, had a nice hint of garlic and lemon but needed salt. - Dessert included shared plates of Tiramisu, Almond Cake, Cheesecake, Chocolate Cake and Lemon Meringue Pie. The Tiramisu was one of the best I've ever had and the Almond Cake was a family favorite. A great option if you're looking to host for a larger party. Delicious!! Gelones is consistently great. We went last night and ate inside. Tables were far apart and everyone wore masks. We all felt safe. We split eggplant rollatini, muscles, baked clams, penne a la vodka, and Cesar salad. All delicious. I ordered chicken a la Chris. I had some, but since we indulged in the appetizers, I took most of it home. I finished my meal with the toasted almond cake. Light and not too sweet. Really yummy. Portions were a good size. The wait staff was great as always. The owner Chris was friendly and really working hard. My friends and I come from Long Island and go with our Jersey friends. The breaking was great, and so was the juice, but the texture of the clams were very tough to chew. I ordered an order of the mussels. The muscle meet was very tiny the best thing I could say about them was that they all had their meat intact in the shell Instead of having a generous and liquidy heaping of marinara sauce there was lumpy breadcrumbs packed into the shells and some places with big chunks of tomato with oil and garlic I ordered marinara on the size to top it with they were a bit disappointing but I dealt with it Garlic bread was over cooked and very hard. But flavored just, ok. At that point I was tired of ordering things I asked for a to go chicken cutlet Parmesan sandwich for my little baby brother Server came back 10 minutes later and said that the chef "would not make it because this is a restaurant" As opposed to being a deli? I was a bit offended when I asked for them to just make a chicken cutlet Parmigiana dinner to go Like I was sitting there with two heads Took a while for us to get the check we passed on coffee and desserts. Have had nothing but fantastic experiences at Gelone. Great restaurant, great food (especially the specials), and even greater staff. You are getting so much more than you are paying for at Gelone. It's so inexpensive and it's great quality and service. The servers must pool their tips together because the entire restaurant staff waits on your table whether it's seating you, taking your order, filling your water glass, opening your wine, or clearing your table. Very attentive! It's BYOB and they don't hesitate to open the bottle for you. Someone is always at your service and they are very pleasant there. Make sure to hear the specials because they always have great ones. I usually get the Chicken Marsala; it comes with roasted potatoes and veggies which are seasoned very well and cooked perfectly (not too raw, but not overcooked). I came here for a graduation party and had a great time. We started with family style appetizers and had a broad spectrum of delightful dishes to choose from. Everything was pretty good. Not amazing, but certainly tasty. Appetizers included eggplant rolitini, stuffed clams, mushrooms stuffed with cheese in marinara sauce, shrimp, mozzarella logs with capers, and fried calamari. The dinner entrees were the stars of the show. The veal rolitini I ordered was excellent. The sides were simple sauteed vegetables and potato that complimented the veal well. The tiramisu dessert was terrific and I was happy to end my meal with it. On a side note, parking is available on the street, not on a lot. The side streets have plenty of parking though. read more

Love this place! This is my family's go-to Italian restaurant when they're up here visiting. I've tried a variety of dishes here and have yet to be disappointed. Their menu offers a nice selection to choose from, but if that's not enough for you, they always have a wealth of specials daily.. and when I say wealth, I mean I start feeling sorry for the waiter who has to have it all memorized, only for me to ask him to repeat the first 2 because I forgot them already. Most recently I had the chicken special (pictured below), and it was fantastic. Had some leftovers to take home too, which is always a plus. For the quality and portion size, their pricing is very competitive. Atmosphere is casual, yet sophisticated. Typically an older crowd when I go, but I think that's mainly because my parents like to go at 5pm. I've also been there for a girl's night and had a great time. BYOB. Excellent service. It's small and inviting and it's always jam-packed with peeps which is a good sign. And can it really be a good 4 years since I've been back? I guess so. Went again recently for a party and they nailed it. Perfectly cooked pasta, perfectly cooked chicken, perfectly cooked... (okay, you get the idea) Extremely friendly staff, clean bathrooms (you end up going a lot when you have twin toddlers), and it's BYOB. We are generally NOT fans of northern NJ Italian restaurants, but this is a real gem! Chose it as a birthday dinner for our son, who lives in the area, and brought along my MIL, whose 90th birthday was 6 days later. First of all, we had no reservation on a Friday evening, and had no problem getting a table just before 6 pm. They do have an earlybird special which is over at 6, so had we ordered asap we might've gotten that, but we were in no special hurry and wanted to peruse and have full menu options. They did start to get full a bit after we came in; I guess the earlybird crowd left & the regular diners came in! BYOB is a huge moneysaver; we brought a bottle of cabernet and they were quick to give us glasses and pour for us. So first of all, 5 stars for the service! We were given water, offered sparkling or tap. When we mentioned that we were celebrating 2 birthdays, they were congratulatory as they seated us. When it took us plenty of time to decide what we wanted, we were not rushed, but they were attentive when we were ready. And, water and wine were filled quickly throughout the meal, empty dishes from our appetizers were cleared quickly to make space at the table, etc. Food: Tricolor salad that we meant for 2 of us to share was ample enough that everyone had some of it, and the 2 of us who were originally going to share it had more than one serving each. The fried calamari - and I NEVER order anything fried, but our son wanted it - was amazingly light, crisp, and not a bit greasy. Our son, who has restaurant experience, thought that was because we were there early enough that it was fresh oil. Whatever, I have never enjoyed that dish as much. We ordered a third appetizer, broccoli rabe with cannellini beans, and it was excellent! The broccoli rabe was tenderly sautéed, again not a bit greasy and not swimming in oil, just right. I would say that we really could've made do with only 2 appetizers, though you may be sure we didn't waste a bite! My MIL had veal parm, something I haven't eaten in decades, and she liked it; you have no idea how hard it is to please her, food-wise, so that was a victory. I had the pasta with seafood (really a zuppa de pesce, though that's not what they called it) and it was perfect - no rubbery seafood, plenty of seafood, and you can sub in whole wheat pasta for $2. extra, which I did, and it was really good. I brought half of it home! The men had shrimp with veggies & potatoes, excellent, and chicken francese, also excellent. The waitstaff kept asking if we wanted dessert, and waited to bring the check, and came back again to ask about dessert, but we didn't want anything more...I have a feeling that they might've brought out a candle if we had asked for anything, because as we left they again wished my son & MIL a happy birthday. But that's just a guess. All I know is that this was one really excellent dining experience, quite unexpectedly, and I do recommend this place! read more

Based on two recommendations, we decided to try Gelone on a Saturday night. We managed to get in as they weren't taking reservations. It has a simple dining room that is pleasant enough and doesn't feel crowded. We started with: Eggplant rollantine-Melenzane Ripiene-they serve 4 of them- unbelievably light with a creamy filling. Portion is more than generous for the price. Polenta with mushrooms- excellent- too many mushrooms but very good overall. Gnocchi bolognese- light and the sauce was traditional- great dish. Fish-special of the night, can't recall the specifics but I do know it was fresh and tasty. Dessert- we shared a ricotta cheesecake- not the best but good. The service that night was off. We had a waitress that was new, understandable. However, we did have another waiter asking us what we wanted for dessert as we were waiting for our entree to arrive. Then we had another one offer us a check, again when our entree had not arrived -and a bus boy bring us bread and olive oil all over again. We had a few good laughs about the service. I came here for a large group party where we had the restaurant to ourselves. Food: I got to taste their Penne Vodka, their Chicken Francesca, and multiple desserts. Everything was very yummy. Their desserts were very delicious....from the cheesecakes to the tiramisu to the cream pies. Yummy! The one thing I did not like was their Ceasar salad...it tasted way too fishy for me. I know there is anchovies in the dressing but usually I don't taste it but this time, everything was very fishy...I could not east the salad. Atmosphere & Service: Atmosphere was nice...lots of cute little sayings on the wall like "live, laugh, love" so it was very cute. The decor was dark, like dark brown wood and settings. The whole place was not very bright. Service was OK. I am not sure if this was the party not starting on time or the wait staff was slow to do things but we got our food very very late. People were starving and we were waiting for a long time. Again, this might not have been them but I don't know. Parking can be a little tricky-You have to turn into the Kessler parking lot and then make a right to go into the back to park for the restaurant. read more

It is bring your own and they have a great menu plus daily specials that are very appealing. My friend and I shared the stuffed mushroom appetizer it was delicious and a generous portion. Yesterday I went to a Christening Party here. This review is for the party, not the restaurant, as I have not dined in the restaurant for a regular dinner. I thought the food, and the service at the party was wonderful. The penne vodka, and caesar salad were both good. I ordered the Veal Gelone, and it was also wonderful. The hosts of the party supplied a Christening cake for the occasion, but we were still served a sample of many other cakes to try. I thought the service and the room were both wonderful for a small party. (The room only holds 40 people.) I can't wait to have the opportunity to dine in their regular restaurant. I've been here a few times, and I have to say, I've never had a bad experience or bad food. Went here last Friday, ordered their stuffed mushroom app (it was on the specials menu). It was amazing! The mushrooms were stuffed with ricotta cheese & spinach and were in a pink vodka sauce. I then split a seafood dish with my boyfriend. He requested they add more scallops instead of shrimp and they were really cool with it. I think they updated the restaurant since we had been here last. The restaurant is really inviting and comfy. We were there for a bridal shower and the manager/owner or whoever he is is unprofessional and charges cash for a guest who leaned on a wall shelf that fell and broke off the wall. Zero stars. Stay away. The owner does not belong in the restaurant business, nor does he deserve your money. Read the other one star reviews and trust their warnings. We called ahead to confirm that it was a BYOB restaurant. We arrived and were told that the kitchen was closed. I asked what time the kitchen closed and was told 8:30. The guy never looked at the time. Made a show of opening a door down the hall (kitchen?) and announcing again that "the kitchen is closed", took a phone call, "checked" the kitchen again and ushered us out the door. My dining companion was in great distress and in need of food. No concern at all on his part. As we left, I asked who was in charge of the restaurant. This smirking little man in ill-fitting clothes informed me that he was in charge; he was the owner. It's horrible to write a bad review during a pandemic when we have tried to always support local businesses but we feel compelled to do so. We have been going to Gelone several years now, I've noticed on several occasions that the manager is not very pleasant. Very short and abrupt but I've always put this aside bc the food is good and the servers are excellent. This weekend we took friends out for dinner for their birthday. Meal was great but servers kept on coming up quickly clearing dishes and it felt like pressure. I asked them to please give us some space. He said sure no problem, and just as we were finishing our coffee, the manager asked us to please leave bc he had a line outside. Mind you this place was not observing the 30% maxim, they were at full capacity. The sign says 2 hour limit, I get it, that's plenty of time to gobble your food and run for a party of 4. But to come up to our table 1 1/2 hour into our dinner and ask us to leave is utmost disrespect, unprofessional and down right rude. We've tried to support our local businesses, but Gelone will never get my business when we have to many nice Italian restaurants in the area to tolerate disrespect especially when we're paying for dinner, it wasn't free read more

Good food. Been going there for years. Never had an issue paying the bill with multiple transactions. Tonight, I had a really hard time explaining the separation of cash and credit card payments to someone who (I guess) didn't understand English to well and he insisted his ways were correct no matter what I said. He ended up confusing me and then used that against me sarcastically asking me if I was a "teacher". In the end, he did exactly was I told him to do in the beginning and took credit for it. Upset at his remark, I told him it would have helped if he knew better English and then he actually called me a racist! He was extremely rude to me, and then put me down to my dinner guests.
