This is a terrible business. My wife has purchased parts and service here several times. She dropped her bicycle off for a tuneup and was told that it was ready a few days before Christmas. We went a couple days after Christmas to pick it up. Since we live over 30 miles away, she checked the website to make sure they were open. We arrived there to find the store closed, with a hand written sign taped to one door saying that they were closed from Christmas until January 2. Needless to say I was pretty upset. I immediately called the store on the phone; no mention about them being closed for more than a week on their outgoing message. I also checked their Facebook page; no post mentioning that they would be closed for more than a week. She picked up her bike after the new year, another 62 mile round trip. When she mentioned what happened, she got a shrug of the shoulders. No apology, explanation or offer to compensate. She even found that one of the services that she paid for was done improperly and had to wait while they fixed it. This business is run in a slipshod, uncaring manner. To close your store for over a week and let people know by taping a sheet of paper to a door is extremely irresponsible. I am never going to patronize this store and am going to urge anyone who will listen to do the same. read more

Gear Up Cyclery is the truth! I had a great experience there today... even with all the work/repairs they had on the books they still accommodated my needs. Their customer service was amazing. From my initial call down to the service I have nothing but good things to say. Mark serviced my road bike. He put air in the tires, did a quick check on it AND put on my new tape for my handlebars!!! When I came back to pick up my baby (my bike) I screamed with happiness!!! My bike looked like it had a makeover. GAH! Mark did all this just in time for my group ride this Sunday. If you want expertise and great customer service I suggest making the trip to Plainfield! Support this small business; you won't be disappointed. Thank you to the staff for making my experiences there good ones. My Wife and I started cycling as a way to get back into outdoor exercise last year. We bought 2 cheap bicycles on Marketplace to get started and decided this year we were going to get new, much better bicycles. We live in Plainfield and want to shop local, so we visited Gear Up Cyclery. We were not disappointed! Gear Up Cyclery is a Trek dealer that offers full service maintenance and has a great showroom of high-quality bicycles. The gentlemen who took care of us made sure we physically fit the bikes we were interested in and even customized a few details for us. They allowed us to "test-ride" the bikes we wanted and made adjustments based on our feedback from the ride. We left the store with our new Trek Marlin 8's and went on our 1st ride on the trails! Thank you so much to Daniel (and everyone else in the Gear Up gang) for the awesome experience. My husband and I went in on Sat not expecting to walk out with anything (we are new at this bicycling stuff and went in mostly to learn more) but we really loved the personalized service we received from Daniel and Tom, as well as the pair of bikes pictured that they luckily had in our size the day we came in. (Fate, anyone?) Not only were they knowledgeable about the products (and bicycling hobby), but they were super friendly and seemed genuinely interested in us as people, rather than just customers. I think we spent a good ten or fifteen chatting about life, and I definitely got good vibes. In the end, we walked out of there feeling like we had made some new friends and we have some super cool hybrid bikes to start us on our cycling journey. Thanks again, Daniel and company. Bought an entry-level Specialized bike from them a few years ago. My wife and English bulldog rode along with me to their store. They stayed outside while I looked at bikes. As I was talking with an employee, I mentioned my family was outside and probably going for a short walk while I browsed. They insisted that they come inside and cool off. They showered my dog with all kinds of attention, which probably sealed the deal on buying a bike there. Further proof of their outstanding service, a few weeks ago I called about a broken foot pedal on my bike (totally my fault, scraped it on the ground during a sharp turn). Called up the shop and they quoted me $10 to replace. I showed up that day and they replaced it. When I asked how much it was, they refused to charge me. We've moved downtown since the original purchase but will always come back to Gear Up. It's worth the drive. read more

I was looking for a part for my son's bike and not only did they look extensively through their spare parts, but they found it and discussed with me the benefits of that part over the original. They spent almost 45 minutes setting the bike up for me and didn't try to hard sell me on anything. I called in today to ask what it would cost to have them assembly a simple Huffy children's bike I bought at Target. It was a easy task that would have taken no more than five or ten minutes. I could have done it myself, but I don't have the basic tools it requires. They quoted me $60!! The guy on the phone was rude, and laughed when he told me, "Sorry, that's what it costs." I was looking forward to supporting a supposedly friendly local business, but they proved to be less than. They have definitely lost any future business from me. read more
