I wanted to stay near the hotel for something to eat today, and that turned out to be a big mistake. Having been awake since 3am UK time, I fancied grabbing some italian food and then heading back, but it didn't work out as simple as that and Gaudi is to blame.
Based on english reviews, english part of the website I decided to come here, but I did speak to 3 members of staff who spoke very little english and couldn't understand me.
A flaw in Yelp's search bar also let this place down, I searched for gluten free pizza in Rome and towards the top, this came up hence that is what I expected, but now I am thinking it only came up because the word "Pizza" was used, as the staff didn't have a clue about coeliac disease.
As regular readers of my reviews will know, I have coeliac disease and I require a strict gluten free diet and if somewhere can't provide information, then they will be trouble as it is breaking EU law that came into effect in December 2014.
This restaurant seems to be popular as people were waiting outside before they opened, which they told me was 7:30. which is another inaccuracy with Yelp.
When I finally got there, I asked 2 members of staff, most basically cleaning and making sure the store looks presentable ready for opening, watering the plants etc, they still didn't understand about gluten free, even with tourists trying to say it to them, and this is breaking EU law.
I always give 1 star to places that do this but in my opinion it could just have been them speaking very poor english and not selecting the right staff to ask, I asked the only staff, these staff could definitely have been better in assisting me, they could of even got a senior member of staff. At the end of the day, I never even walked into the restaurant and they did let me down, by being unable to translate basic things and understanding correct italian terms.
I don't want to make excuses for them, they just didn't understand about gluten free, even in italian or get staff who could and that's breaking the law, so I feel I can't give any more than one star, I would happily revisit the restaurant however (paying in full of course) if the manager got in touch with me telling me about their gluten free options as it does look very nice, however until they can provide dietary information, it can't be any more than a one star rating, as I said it is breaking EU law. read more
