I give this a 5 due to the fact that the monument was amazingly beautiful and large. Also because the A.T. runs through this state park. Personal note--people in cars need to slow the heck down here!!!!!!!! This park is divided by a Y road at the top of the mountain. You are blind when you pop this hill and the road is Very narrow and curvy. You have to cross the road at this park and for the A.T. Plus..we walked from the treehouse down the road to get here....Slow down people.

Love this little MD state park nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. Gathland state park was once the home of a civil war journalist who built some really cool and interesting structures all over his land. The park today is well known as a main access point and parking area for day or overnight hikes on the Appalachian Trail. Overall this is a really cool place to check out when exploring this part of Maryland.

Well I enjoyed this place. I went there in the summer several times and it was not crowded. You can walk around and look at stuff!

The camp host was very active throughout the day and gave great local recommendations. Negatives - you can't really see the river due to the grass and trees. It also says you can fish, which you can as long as you can make it down an incredibly steep embankment but there was not really a place to stand comfortably to fish and at least at site 5 there are quite a bit of rocks in the way. There was also a ton of little moths and gnats. Even with a fire the bugs made it unbearable to enjoy our time. Setting up and packing up was horrible. We understand bugs exist in nature but they were flying in our hair, mouth, nose, nothing worked to get rid of them. Also, the camp sites are just yards from a somewhat busy road. A few times people drove by and purposefully rev'd their engines. We could also hear a train in the distance going in the middle of the night. Maybe a different time of year would make all the difference regarding the annoying bugs but may is not it.

I had a lot of questions when I made the reservation for Stoney Brook Cabin (the wheel chair…read moreaccessible one) but I pulled the trigger and I'm so glad we did. First I'll talk about the park itself then I'll talk about the cabin, because I figure some people probably have the same questions we did. This seems like an ideal place for spring or fall camping. Probably summer too but it didn't seem like there were any swimming options at the park. They had a ton of activity options for kids but we couldn't try any because it was thanksgiving and the staff was off. Still, it looks like a super fun place for kids. Like I said before, I had a lot of questions about the cabin. It mentions that it had a grill but said nothing about a fire circle. It does, indeed have a fire circle but this cabin (I suspect due to its ADA status) was EXTRA TALL. You really couldn't cook on it or even roast marshmallows easily. On the other hand it would be pretty great for families with small kids. While the ring still got hot your kid absolutely CANNOT fall into the fire. We were there when it was cold and the heaters worked a little TOO well. It didn't seem like there was a comfy medium. They were either on and you were roasting or off and you were freezing. Still, for a winter camp it was nice to have the option. The bathroom was extra big which was also quite nice. Remember to bring EVERYTHING, including hand soap and hand towels for the bathroom. Though it kind of feels like a hotel or Airbnb you will need all the essentials. While the website states that there is Wi-Fi and a tv for watching stuff, the Wi-Fi was not available while we were there. Also, the fold out couch was kind of falling apart. If you're going with kids they probably won't mind but if it's an all adult camp group the folks stuck on the fold out will likely not be thrilled.

We tent camped here a random weekend over the summer with kids ages 4 and 11…read more Good Plenty of space at camp sites Quiet Lots of shade Limited group activities for kids Activity center with a few games Staff went above and beyond showing a movie in the activity center when it rained Not so good Gravel pads- Even with a tarp down it tore our tent. Not to mention standing on sharp, larger rocks. No thanks! Pay attention to distance to the bathroom. We lucked out and I grabbed the site right across from one. Other sites were a LOOOOOOOOONG distance away. When we visited there was a group of cub scouts that rented a few sites. They clearly should have rented more as they had everything packed to the gills- cars along the narrow road, smaller kids wandering around the road unescorted, several tents per site. It made it super dangerous to drive anywhere because KIDS. WERE. EVERYWHERE! Amazing none of them were hit with the lack of attention mixed with how dark it gets. The campground needs to enforce a rule of X campers per site. I'm all in favor of people getting out to camp, especially kiddos, except when it hinders everyone else. They have a few timed group activities. This was great for my kids, but didn't last long enough and often started late. We arrived Friday around 4 PM. The jumping pad was open from 4 30 to 5 30. We start to unpack and I decide to take my kids to the jumping pad so they don't lose out on precious playtime. We arrive and it's still closed. Around 4 50 someone pulls up in a truck, unlocks it, and drives away. By this point there's a pretty big group of kids ready to play. I think "maybe they'll give the kids extra time at the end". Nope! 5 30 on the nose and the same person pulls up and shuts things down despite all the kids still playing. Along the same lines, they opened the pads up for a couple hours Saturday morning. A group of pre-teens and teenagers dominate the jumping pad to the point where all the littler kids can't use it. Maybe they need to have timed jumps limited to certain ages so everyone can get a turn to enjoy? To avoid injury I took my 4 year old over to the pedal cart track until you realize how hard they are to pedal. It was so bad I ended up pushing our cart up a hill because we were completely stuck. It looks and sounds like fun until you realize the carts aren't in pretty shoddy condition. For the relatively low price we paid, I think 40/night, the site was definitely worth it. If they could figure out a way to expand hours for the activities, it would greatly improve the experience for families with kids. I prefer to keep my kids off their technology while camping, so mingling with other kids through activities and games help to pass the time. The activity center was helpful in that regard, but having to trade your license for balls or whatever was a bit annoying when you were done and someone else wanted to play. Luckily everyone was cool and understood, but transferring equipment was a bit of an ordeal.

I feel the price is a bit high as the amenities offered are the same as the regular cabins ($80-$85 per night). The firefly did just recently add a window AC unit and one electric plug prior to our stay. There are no lights so a lantern is still needed. We didn't use the charcoal grill as it was rusted, we opted for cooking on the fire instead. They do not allow outside firewood and they charge $7 a bag for wood and $5 for kindling. Unfortunately their firewood was very thinly chopped, maybe 1-2 inch slivers so the firewood didn't last long. The shower and bathrooms were clean and close to the campsite which we enjoyed. The area felt very safe. Though there appeared to be a ring camera with lights just above the open showers which I found a bit odd, I assume it was pointing to the other side of the building. Easily accessible dumpster and water for cooking/washing dishes. Parking is very hard to come by so if you bring more than one vehicle this may be a problem. The cabin was well kept, clean and comfy mattresses. Lights didn't work on the upper balcony but we enjoyed the lower deck. The only thing I found off putting were over kill on signage around the campsite. Quiet hours with a $250 fine for noises past 11pm or before 7am, signs regarding usage of amenities .... It appeared they didn't really want you using too many resources. Overall, we really enjoyed the cabin, the addition of the AC was great, facility was well kept, but I felt it was over priced.

We're headed back home to NH today, and we are so sad to be leaving the Gettysburg KOA! This fourth…read moreof July week was probably the best camping experience we've ever had. Definitely our best KOA stay! Our family of four, plus our Boston Terrier, stayed in a two room camping cabin. It was great because my husband and I had our own room and space, and our boys (10 and almost 12) had their own too. It was SWELTERING hot this week, but thankfully our cabin had an AC in the back room and ceiling fans in both rooms, which kept us nice and cool. It also had a decent sized mini fridge, which allowed us to eat at the cabin a majority of meals and cut down on food cost. It's an absolutely beautiful location outside of downtown Gettysburg. Our cabin was secluded and situated at the end of a path, so even though we had neighbors, no one was walking by/through our site at all (which can be really frustrating when you're crammed like sardines at other campgrounds). At night we'd sit by our campfire and watch the fireflies. I've never seen so many in my life; The trees around our site looked like they were twinkling with lights every night. I brought our dog for a walk early one morning and even saw a deer in one of the empty camper sites. It couldn't have been more than 20 feet from me, eating from one of the bushes. Just an overall gorgeous and serene place. Our boys also had a fantastic time. There was so much for them to do! They did a magic workshop and saw a magic show, did movie and popcorn nights at the pavilion, listened to Civil War ghost stories, swam, played mini golf/shuffleboard, mined for gems, rode the funky bikes, jumped on the jump pad, played on the playground, played jumbo chess/jenga/connect 4, made some great friends, and the list goes on... Because it is a fairly small and quiet campground, we felt safe letting them walk to and from these activities. It allowed us to give them more independence and trust, which we all enjoyed. We've been at campgrounds where there were adults up partying, being loud/drunk, blasting music into the wee hours of morning. To our relief, this KOA had none of that! It was very family friendly. But above all else, the entire staff was so warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived. We were always greeted with a smile and friendliness. This is a perfect example of what a KOA should be!! Our family was very sad to be packing up and leaving today, but I have no doubt that we will be back in the near future. Thank you all for making our week in Gettysburg so wonderful! :)
