The park is something to behold at golden hour. Somehow it becomes impossible to capture a bad photo as every frame turns into an extraordinary and captivating vignette. Give Renfrew a visit. The park can be rented out for a number of things such as family get together a or even weddings! The park offers a picnic area with tables, grills, and bathrooms. If you are having a large group you can rent out the pavilion. There are plenty of walking trails and it is one of the few parks in the area you can bring your dog, but you need to register them with the park. There is a stream that kids are always playing in and is perfect to cool down on a hot summer day. Anyone who grew up in Waynesboro knows Renfrew Park and can provide you directions on how to get there.

The walk to the waterfall is moderate and enjoyable, not too long but enough to make you feel like you earned the view at the end. The sound of the water and the peaceful atmosphere make it a great escape from daily routines. The park is clean and well maintained and there are plenty of picnic areas where you can relax after your hike. I also liked that the parking was easy to find and there were signs guiding the way clearly. It can get a little crowded during weekends so coming earlier in the day is definitely a better idea. Overall it's a calm and scenic spot for hiking relaxing or just breathing some fresh air. It's not the biggest waterfall you'll see but the overall vibe of the park makes it worth visiting at least once if you're around the area.

A bit of a mixed bag for me at Cunningham Falls…read more.. I was excited to find a listing of parks that supposedly had wheelchair accessible trails. I've never been to Cunningham Falls before and the idea of seeing a waterfall seemed lovely. However, the accessible boardwalk has strips on pretty much everything board which made me feel like I was riding a very angry horse. Each bump shot pain up my spine. I'm writing this a day later and I still hurt, and I think I'm a pretty tough chick... and the view of the falls was mostly blocked and not worth the actual pain. The Falls is more like a small stream of water that splashes down some rocks. It's a soothing noise but I was expecting something more grandiose... I suppose I could blame climate change. Most of the old stream beds are dry. We also checked out the "south beach" which I enjoyed. There's plenty of pavement, and packed gravel. I couldn't get close to the water, but that's okay because it was a sunny day and I prefer to stick to the shade. I was impressed by the fact that every picnic table has a grill nearby. If I lived closer I'd like to think I'd come to the south beach often, hide in the trees near the river, grill something delicious... but I was a several hours long trip from Dundalk, so it's unlikely that I'll return. It was a nice day-trip though. I don't regret going.

Numerous kid-friendly facilities, both outdoor but also an indoor nature center were available. There were plenty of live nonhuman animals and some chatty humans inside the nature center, which is now open on weekends. The sights on the outdoor trails were numerous, and tables to eat at were plentiful. All the facilities were clean and new. As a play date for kiddos (not mine), it was very impressive.

This is a unique 609-acre nature preserve, donated to the Mt. Hope community by a private owner in…read more1994. The preserve aims to protect the wetlands in the Swamp Creek watershed. The park offers 10 miles of hiking trails. I walked the Nature Trail and the adjoining Quarry Trail, and found them very peaceful. The trails were shady, with burbling creeks and lush ferns aplenty. I saw several turtles in the pond. I also saw a plant that I believe was ginseng (see photos). I encountered only one other person on my walk. According to the Strawberry Hill Web site, all of the main trails were once used for logging a tree farm that occupied part of the property. In the 1850s, the pond on the property provided water for a saw mill located on the Swamp Creek/Middle Creek juncture. Strawberry Hill offers many public programs, including summer camps, naturalist classes, nature walks, and geocaching events. In February and March, you can learn how to make maple syrup in the maple sugaring classes. They also host events such as the Twisted Turkey Trail Tussle race (10 K, 10 mile, and 1 mile).

We parked at the visitors center and went inside to use the facilities prior to our hike. It's a cute visitors center with historical information about the area, the wildlife, and trees. They also sell trinkets, magnets, bug spray, etc. The rangers are always cordial and will answer any questions you may have. They have a charging station!!!! This was clutch as I drove my EV this time. It's free and had me charged and ready to go by the end of my hike. We hiked up to Wolf Rock, Chimney Rock, and back. The trails are rated (if you have the All Trails app and/or based on the map). I'd say this hike was moderate. It's mostly shaded which is nice. There weren't too many insects, but you should apply insect repellent nontheless. They have several other trails. This one was a bit over 3 miles, but the full loop connects all the trails. I would like to make it to Cunningham Falls. This is a great option for me as I live in Maryland. The trails are clean, litter free so take your trash with you. Come check it out!

Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center -- A Quiet Gateway to the Mountains…read more Tucked into the scenic hills of Frederick County near Thurmont, the Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center is a great starting point for exploring one of Maryland's more serene outdoor escapes. It's part of Catoctin Mountain Park, a federally managed park offering about 25 miles of hiking trails, plus camping and trout fishing. Worth noting: it's separate from nearby Cunningham Falls State Park, so plan accordingly if you're trying to hit both. We stopped by on a brisk, sunny weekday and were rewarded with light crowds and a peaceful atmosphere. There was some noticeable truck traffic passing through the area--turns out much needed road improvements are underway--but it didn't take away from the overall experience. The visitor center itself is on the smaller side but well maintained and thoughtfully curated. Informational displays, posters, and plaques highlight the region's history--from its Native inhabitants to the communities that later shaped life in these mountains. It's a nice touch that adds depth before you hit the trails. Inside, you can find maps, books, and a modest gift shop selection. The park rangers were approachable and knowledgeable, offering helpful updates on trail conditions and access points. Bonus points for clean restrooms and a convenient place to refill your water bottle before heading out. For the youngsters in your group. Don't forget to join the Junior Ranger program and get your booklet stamped! Fun way to get kids excited to visit and appreciate the many beautiful National Parks in our country throughout their lifetime! Whether you're gearing up for a hike or just passing through, this is a solid place to get oriented, learn a bit of history, and soak in the surrounding natural beauty.

Here at Harpers Ferry Historical Park in West Virginia, this Maryland Heights Trail may be one of…read morethe best hikes in the park. Due to construction in late September 2025, to access the trailhead, I had to take an extended 20-minute shuttle ride from the Visitor Center to an alternative location to begin the hike. Walking the paved path for 1/4 of a mile, there'll be a sign mentioning to access the trail...you must cross the street and go around a barrier on the initial climb. Maryland Heights Trail is 4.6 miles roundtrip gaining 1200 feet in elevation, but the pathway is clearly defined and suitable for most hikers. There'll be a halfway junction where to continue on...you must veer to the right as the Maryland Heights Trail changes its name to The Overlook Cliff Trail for 1.4 more miles. Next, follow the "4/10th's of a mile sign" to the right again, for the remaining push to the lookout. From here the trail descends downhill with some pesky rocks to maneuver around before noticing a total clearing of the forest and the wide open observation viewpoint. Arriving at Maryland Heights Overlook, it's a 300-foot vertical cliff showcasing Harpers Ferry's Historic Town at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. I was fortunate enough to even catch a CSX train crossing the original Baltimore and Ohio railroad tracks. Overall, Harpers Ferry is nestled within a vintage West Virginia backdrop consumed among colorfully green forests and mountains. Btw, if you're interested, you can walk the cobblestone streets of the Lower Town District. It's a throwback in time to the 1800's. Exploring around offers documented narratives helping to preserve our nation's history with more opportunities to appreciate nature at the banks of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. In the end, hiking this Maryland Heights Trail at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park makes for a worthwhile visit.

Many a summers ago, we would spend the day enjoying the trail- learning about the various…read morehistorical aspects via all the signage (my favorites are the President Lincoln fun facts), trekking the steep rewarding paths, and finishing with a picnic at the overlook- Finally returning years later, much has changed- while the uphill trail still maintained it's level of intensity, a few unexpected challenges were also added..... 1. parking- the two lots next to the trailhead had been closed -leaving the options of a visitor center parking lot a little way form the trail near the center of town-requiring a shuttle service (all at cost 20$ per day) or about a mile down the road in a pull off for free- we opted for the free parking- this added a mile walk on the not so easy train tracks & heavy traffic road- definitely not the safest option- 2. Lack of updated trail signage- we found ourselves doing a few unnecessary loops as the signage we remember navigating to full loop -overlook loop- etc were missing or too run down to read We do love the challenge of this trail- we enjoy the gorgeous expansive overlooks along the way; but with the unexpected challenges we ended up just hiking to the overlook and back down for sake of time instead of committing to the entire trail, as usual (also just note despite its challenging nature- this is a very heavily walked trail- very crowded on weekends)

It is a 205-foot-long (62 m), Town lattice truss bridge, constructed in 1849. It uses no arches or exterior supports and was considered strong enough to support a bridge up to 200 feet in length. It was less costly to build than traditional arch supported bridges. It crosses Conococheague Creek. In 1973 the bridge was rehabilitated after being carried downstream by flood waters during Hurricane Agnes. Steel bracing was added at a later date to stabilize the bridge. In spite of being altered over the years due to destruction and restoration it remains a good example of this type of covered bridge design and contains approximately two-thirds of its original timbers. The bridge is only open to pedestrian traffic and is located at the end of a curvy road down to the creek. There is a small area for parking nearby.
