Appalachian Trail(AT marked in white) goes right through the park. There was a shelter. It was the cleanest and best shelter I have seen in a state park. Well maintained. I've been going to Cowan's Gap since I was a kid, going with my mom, dad and sister. I loved it…read morethen, and I still love it now. But now I go with my dad and son. We do a trip every November for a weekend. The cabins are pretty much the same as they were when I was 12 years old, but that doesn't matter. They have what you need for a nice boys weekend in the woods. In the winter, the place is pretty sparse and not many people staying at the campground, but that's what we like. Great hiking trails, walking around the lake, making campfires and doing nothing, if that's what we feel like. I do remember the summers being more crowded and that's the time when the cabins and the tent sites get filled up. They have a great beach on the lake for swimming, snack bar, canoe's and paddle boat rentals, and activities for kids as well. We are from SE Lancaster County, and it's only about 1 1/2 hour drive to get there, so it's very do-able for a weekend in the Fall. I would highly recommend it. I'd also recommend making sure you have everything you need before you get there (i.e. food, dishes, cookware, batteries etc), since there aren't really any places convenient to pick up forgotten items. But then again you are in the mountains, so that's what you get.

They are too cute. They are owls that can no longer survive in the wild on their own (one is missing a wing, another has bad eyesight) The facilities are exceptionally clean, which was a welcome surprise. We spent a few hours here and didn't run out of things to do. It's nice hat there's parking throughout. You don't have to park out front and walk a distance to your destination. They rent paddle boats as well (in-season)

The lake is pretty huge for you to go around. It was well kept when we went during the fall! Such a pretty view and place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life if needed. Can go fising here and they give life vests for when you rent a boat if you dont have your own. But no littles under 3 can ride on their boats if you rent. Cant wait to go back when it is warmer.

The park can be rented out for a number of things such as family get together a or even weddings! The park offers a picnic area with tables, grills, and bathrooms. If you are having a large group you can rent out the pavilion. There are plenty of walking trails and it is one of the few parks in the area you can bring your dog, but you need to register them with the park. There is a stream that kids are always playing in and is perfect to cool down on a hot summer day. Anyone who grew up in Waynesboro knows Renfrew Park and can provide you directions on how to get there.

Trough Creek Stare Park is a Park with a great combination of nature, history and fun! First, this place is absolutely historic. It was originally inhabited by Native Americans, but later settled by settlers. There they built a town that relied on the iron. At one point it produced 100 pounds of iron a day. In the 1940's part of Roosevelt's New Deal took place inter park. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed roads, trails and planted trees! It is even rumored that Edgar Allen Poe wrote the poem "The Raven" based upon his time at Trough Creek Park. When it comes to hiking they have a nice amount of trails here with some very rocky and difficult. Along the hikes you can see the Balanced Rock, a boulder perched on a peak. Other natural attractions include the Copperas Rocks and wildlife including bald eagles, snakes and bears. Altogether, this is a beautiful park!

On the other side of Potomac River is WV It's a free park to enjoy for viewing scenery! There is plenty of parking. Free to enjoy! People were there hiking, biking, fishing...I guess you can swim there is no signage saying you can't. Only a sign saying no alcohol It's a beautiful area with Great open river views! Don't feed the ducks; there's a fine for doing so. Parking is free along the road on West 2nd St. Recommended--the usuals frequent the park: moms with strollers, pet owners, and even fishermen.

Obviously visitors and park officials are doing their part to keep the place ship-shape. Brought my dog for a run; he met two other large-breed pups to romp with inside the multi-acre fenced space for large dogs. Small dogs have the adjacent fenced area. Hard to believe the dog park is free. It's downhill from the playground and pavilions, away from kids and picnickers. Beautiful views from the top of the hill where you enter the park and where the pavilions are. Playground looks awesome. We had a nice hike to the dog park area through mowed fields. I noticed paved walkways directly to the pavilions from the parking area. Perhaps an additional path could be put in, with dogpaw-shaped stepping stones or whatever, to guide dog owners to the top of the hill where the trail leads down to the dog runs. Because yes-- it is tricky if you don't know where to go. I appreciate the other Yelpers who gave clear directions on where to go with my dog, thanks! He had a great time here and we'll be back!

A bit of a mixed bag for me at Cunningham Falls…read more.. I was excited to find a listing of parks that supposedly had wheelchair accessible trails. I've never been to Cunningham Falls before and the idea of seeing a waterfall seemed lovely. However, the accessible boardwalk has strips on pretty much everything board which made me feel like I was riding a very angry horse. Each bump shot pain up my spine. I'm writing this a day later and I still hurt, and I think I'm a pretty tough chick... and the view of the falls was mostly blocked and not worth the actual pain. The Falls is more like a small stream of water that splashes down some rocks. It's a soothing noise but I was expecting something more grandiose... I suppose I could blame climate change. Most of the old stream beds are dry. We also checked out the "south beach" which I enjoyed. There's plenty of pavement, and packed gravel. I couldn't get close to the water, but that's okay because it was a sunny day and I prefer to stick to the shade. I was impressed by the fact that every picnic table has a grill nearby. If I lived closer I'd like to think I'd come to the south beach often, hide in the trees near the river, grill something delicious... but I was a several hours long trip from Dundalk, so it's unlikely that I'll return. It was a nice day-trip though. I don't regret going.
