THE BIG: Disclaimer - this is not near Annapolis! In between Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The bae and I came here on an early morning to hike to Annapolis Rocks. We heard that the views here were great...and were they! It's a relatively steep 5 mile hike up to the peak. Be warned there is a fork in the road that may trip you up near the peak. Take the left. Views were great at the top, didn't run into many people on the trail and if we did, it was nice to see them all wearing masks when we walked past each other. There were also rock climbers at the peak doing their thing. Kudos to them THE FINAL BAMBOO: Ultimately a great hike on a cool winter morning. Parking did get bad when we left (~10:30am) and the state trooper was out in his truck doling out tickets.

This 5-mile round trip from the parking lot was perfect for a morning where we had about 2 hours sans kids to get a little sweat and nature in. The trail was wide and mostly shaded in early June so we avoided the heat and need for sunscreen. Nearly 800-ft elevation gain so it wasn't too strenuous but got the heart pumping enough. Saw so many cicadas and shells and even a cute turtle on the trail. Would hike again.

This is one of the most rewarding trails I've been on! It's not too tough, has a lot of surprisingly great wildlife with tons of interesting plants, and has an amazing view. I think the trail is very well maintained and I call it a hidden gem. The parking lot is interestingly next to a big road; I think we had to swing back bc we missed it the first time. You'd have to wait for parking since it's limited. In the beginning, there are steps you have to walk up that are relatively distanced and with decent height. Be careful not to trip on that since both of us got injured going up (bleeding cut) and one going down (sprain).

The hike is a little rigorous but it's worth it when you get to the top. The view is absolutely spectacular.

A bit of a mixed bag for me at Cunningham Falls…read more.. I was excited to find a listing of parks that supposedly had wheelchair accessible trails. I've never been to Cunningham Falls before and the idea of seeing a waterfall seemed lovely. However, the accessible boardwalk has strips on pretty much everything board which made me feel like I was riding a very angry horse. Each bump shot pain up my spine. I'm writing this a day later and I still hurt, and I think I'm a pretty tough chick... and the view of the falls was mostly blocked and not worth the actual pain. The Falls is more like a small stream of water that splashes down some rocks. It's a soothing noise but I was expecting something more grandiose... I suppose I could blame climate change. Most of the old stream beds are dry. We also checked out the "south beach" which I enjoyed. There's plenty of pavement, and packed gravel. I couldn't get close to the water, but that's okay because it was a sunny day and I prefer to stick to the shade. I was impressed by the fact that every picnic table has a grill nearby. If I lived closer I'd like to think I'd come to the south beach often, hide in the trees near the river, grill something delicious... but I was a several hours long trip from Dundalk, so it's unlikely that I'll return. It was a nice day-trip though. I don't regret going.

There are life guards present as well. There are spacious bathrooms available for use a short walk up from the water and have changing rooms in addition to shower areas as well. The bathrooms were clean as well as the changing rooms, but there was a lot of standing water in areas. I'd definitely recommend walking carefully. We chose this campground expecting a family-friendly environment for Easter weekend, but…read moreunfortunately our experience was significantly impacted by repeated disturbances from a group of adults in nearby campsites. There was excessive screaming, loud music, and disruptive behavior that continued well past midnight, making it extremely difficult for families and young children to enjoy the holiday weekend. Even more concerning was the apparent lack of response to enforce quiet hours or address the ongoing noise issue. This does not reflect the family atmosphere many guests would reasonably expect during a holiday weekend. I strongly encourage management to take these complaints seriously and enforce campground rules consistently to ensure all guests can enjoy their stay. Families considering visiting during Easter weekend should be aware that this has been an ongoing issue.

No issues with the late check in. The paperwork and site location was ready for my arrival. The biggest issue for me, my site was conveniently located right next to the campground dump station. On a breezy and temperate Maryland evening, I was hoping to enjoy a fire, but the breeze filled the air with the aromas of everyone's poop (literally), so that was a hard pass for me. I was hoping to sleep in a bit, get some work done before I leave, and when I requested a late check out, it wasn't available. There are three open sites next to me that I'm looking at as I type this message, and I find it very hard to believe that someone paid a fee to reserve this specific site right next to the dump station. Or, perhaps, Monday is a high volume check in day at this location. Either way, from my view, there was zero effort to accommodate the demanding request I made to stay an additional two hours at this location. Next time I pass through this way, I'll either pass this KOA and find the next closest campground, or this experience has motivated me to try Pilot/Loves parking for 1/4 the cost of what I paid to stay here. They have dump stations there, and I'm sure they won't stick me literally right next to it.

The camp host was very active throughout the day and gave great local recommendations. Negatives - you can't really see the river due to the grass and trees. It also says you can fish, which you can as long as you can make it down an incredibly steep embankment but there was not really a place to stand comfortably to fish and at least at site 5 there are quite a bit of rocks in the way. There was also a ton of little moths and gnats. Even with a fire the bugs made it unbearable to enjoy our time. Setting up and packing up was horrible. We understand bugs exist in nature but they were flying in our hair, mouth, nose, nothing worked to get rid of them. Also, the camp sites are just yards from a somewhat busy road. A few times people drove by and purposefully rev'd their engines. We could also hear a train in the distance going in the middle of the night. Maybe a different time of year would make all the difference regarding the annoying bugs but may is not it.
