Food Lion and more aren't far away, a bring your own frisbee if you want to skip the store markup.

I never imagined I would be writing a negative review like this. We reserved two campsites for Columbus Day weekend. On our second night, severe storm conditions moved into the area. Because we had children with us and live nearby in Virginia, we decided it would be safer to take the kids home for the night and return the following day, Monday, to collect our camping gear. Before leaving, I spoke directly with a campground staff member. He checked and told me there were no reservations for our two sites after ours. He advised that an extended checkout would cost a $26 fee. I specifically told him to charge my card and asked him to make sure the morning staff knew about the arrangement. He said to call back tomorrow as there was nothing he could do the fay before checkout. Based on that conversation, I left believing our equipment would remain safely on the sites until we returned. I tried to reach someone in the office and somehow I kept getting sent on a loop while calling. At 12:30 pm I managed to speak with someone and I was told that all our stuff was packed up and in a truck. When I came back to pick up the stuff, I was stunned. Our two large tents, brand-new canopy, and gazebo had all been taken down and thrown into the back of a truck, almost maliciously. Everything was tangled together. The tents had holes, pieces were broken, and the equipment appeared to have been handled extremely roughly. All four shelters are now unusable. What makes this so upsetting is that I had specifically asked for permission to leave the equipment there. If the staff member had told me no, I would have found another solution that night. But he told me yes, advised the extension arrangement, and assured me the morning staff would be informed. I relied on that assurance. After more than 25 years of coming to Pohick Bay, seeing our camping equipment treated this way was heartbreaking. I was not looking for any special treatment. I simply expected to return and find our belongings in the condition in which we left them. What disappointed me even more was that, after what happened, no one offered to replace or meaningfully address the shelters that were damaged. I have many good memories of Pohick Bay, which makes writing this review even more difficult. But after this experience, I cannot recommend camping here. I still find it hard to believe that after decades of visiting this park, this is how our family's trip ended.

We enter through a back door, and there was a note for us, welcoming us, letting us know where our room was, and directed us to call in the AM and let them know what time we would like breakfast. This is not a fancy B&B. It was very clean, kept with the original time period. The owner, Tucker, was friendly, informative, and excellent conversationalist. The breakfast was delicious, we stayed two nights, the second morning, Tucker made us a baked French toast that was amazing, and even gave me the recipe. The donkey, Milo, on the property was very friendly. Tucker gave me some fruit to feed him. The entire experience was so different from what I am used to in Massachusetts. I hope to have reason to go back someday.

It reads: The Neabsco Mills Ironworks complex, under the ownership of three generations of the Tayloe family, of Richmond County, operated between 1737 and 1828. Located near this site, it was one of the longest continuously operating ironworks in present-day Northern Virginia. The 5,000-acre iron plantation, which was worked by resident free laborers, indentured servants, and slaves, was a multifaceted operation. The workers produced not only pig and bar iron for sale at home and export to Great Britain, but also engaged in shipbuilding, milling, leatherworking, shoemaking, and farming. The complex was an important supplier of iron for weaponry during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. (Probably used during the Civil War, too.)

The camp is tucked back off from the main post and all sorts of wildlife is meandering around. There is tons of turkeys, owls, foxes, skunks, whistle pigs, osprey, hawks, and of course the notorious raccoon. Throwing our trash away at the dumpster area had turned into quite the affair during the evenings. When you approach the dumpster you can hear them scurrying around inside the dumpster just wreaking havoc on the trash bags to get to their delicious content. You got to quickly throw your trash in because they come flying out once you pop the dumpster lid open and scuttle across the top of the fence. They frequent the dumpster so much they have a beaten path leading from the woods to the dumpster. Our two dogs really looked forward to the evening trash/dumpster walk and would work themselves into a frenzy knowing they are about to see and smell a raccoon. Others folks may not find this amusing but I sure did get a kick out of it. The park itself is well maintained and quiet. There is not a lot of amenities right in the park but a short walk there is a playground area and a small dog park. At the main office you can rent all sorts of equipment to include kayaks and canoes. There is a fishing pier right in the park and another one just a short walk away.

People wash their dog hair covered items in the washing machines and the campground never cleans them. Laundry is EXPENSIVE for that wet dog smell all your cloths will have. The raccoons get trash everywhere and the office will send out passive-aggressive fliers about it. There is no shade and you'll cook inside your camper during the summer no matter how many A/Cs you have. The positives are you are on Fort Belvoir. It's a pretty location. The showers are nice (the men's smell like urine because men have bad aim). Not much to recommend. Go to Pohick Park. It's cheaper and more helpful from the front office.

John Mosby officially formed his first company of the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry in the Rector's parlor on June 10, 1863, and Confederate cavalry commander J.E.B. Stuart called the home his headquarters during the Gettysburg Campaign. The house also served as a hospital for wounded Union cavalrymen in the winter of 1864.
