The highlight of our stay was the Adult Half-Day Cabana at Champions Pool. The adults-only area was peaceful and relaxing, and the dedicated shaded space was perfect for my pregnant wife. We enjoyed excellent poolside food and mocktails, along with complimentary snacks, fruit, cool towels, and attentive service throughout the afternoon. Our upgraded top-floor room featured a beautiful balcony overlooking the lawn, a fireplace, and a spacious spa-like bathroom. We also appreciated the thoughtful welcome amenity of Martinelli's Sparkling Cider, fruit, and a welcome note for our babymoon. Dinner at Harrimans was the one aspect of our stay that didn't quite match the exceptionally high standard of the rest of the resort. However, our server Oscar was outstanding. The service was excellent, though we felt some of the dishes didn't fully align with the price point. Interestingly, our favorite dining experiences were poolside and through in-room dining. Breakfast the next morning was exceptional, from the quality of the food to the thoughtful setup overlooking our balcony view. What impressed us most was how seamless the entire experience felt. Between the room upgrade, early room access, late checkout, thoughtful service, and attention to detail, the staff made us feel genuinely cared for throughout our stay. Luxury hotels can provide beautiful rooms, but memorable hospitality comes from people. Salamander delivered that consistently. The snacks were top notch, the coffee was actually good, and the soda pop machine was a nice touch. Did I mention Andes Candies? There were a few events on the Terrace and it held the group nicely, They had some awesome food with carved meats, upscale food, and they wrapped the beer bottle in a cocktail napkin... that's high class!!! It's not really walkable to anything nearby, but there are plenty of close places to drive and grab stuff for the room (I recommend Sheetz) and additional restaurants in the area. I just had to write a review about an amazing young woman named Saxton, who made such an impression on us. It was her very first week working at the inn. I could tell she was going through some struggles in her personal life, but despite whatever challenges she was facing, she gave everything she had to making sure her guests had a wonderful experience. Her kindness, determination, and genuine desire to do her very best were impossible not to notice. I remember thinking there was something really special about her and that she needed to be recognized for being an extraordinary woman. I had no idea that taking a few minutes to recognize someone for the wonderful job they were doing could have such an impact on their life. When we returned this week, something happened that brought me to tears. During dinner, I saw Saxton again, and she was doing what she does best! There was a wobbly table, and she was determined to fix it. She literally had to get down on the floor and sit there to accomplish that goal, and she did just that! She wasn't going to walk away until the table was steady. That's the kind of person she is. You can tell she takes pride in what she does, even the smallest details. I saw her look up with a big smile, as if she recognized me. As we were leaving, Jessica, the lovely young woman who checked us into the inn, told me that Saxton had recognized me and wondered if I was the lady who had written the review. I said yes and asked if I could see her to say hello. When I saw Saxton, she gave me the biggest hug and told me that my review had literally changed her life! Apparently, it brought her hard work and dedication into the spotlight, and management took notice. She was finally being recognized for the effort and heart she had been putting into her work from the very beginning. But what makes me even prouder is that Saxton didn't stop there. She took that recognition and continued to build on it. Her determination, dedication, and ability to connect with people have only grown stronger. She kept showing up, giving her best, and proving herself through her actions. Now, just seven months later, she's being considered for restaurant manager! Yes, the same woman that sat on the floor to accomplish her goal of fixing that table. I may have helped bring attention to her hard work, but Saxton is the one who earned every bit of the recognition and opportunity that followed. What touched me just as much was seeing the light in her eyes that I hadn't seen seven months ago. I cannot begin to tell you how much that meant to me. It brought me to tears. I was so proud of her! She deserves every bit of that recognition. And now I also have to tell you about Jessica, another extraordinary woman in her own way. From the moment she checked us in, she was so warm and welcoming. She even went out of her way to personally escort us to our cottage, even though her shift was over and she was leaving. That was when we discovered that we share a love for birds. The next morning, when we returned to the restaurant, we saw that Jessica had left us her personal Birds of Virginia book to borrow, along with a map she had taken the time to mark with the places where she had seen some of her favorite birds. She was genuinely excited to share something she loves with us, and I thought that was just the sweetest thing. She didn't have to do any of that. She simply wanted to share her excitement and help us experience something special. I was so touched by her thoughtfulness. Lastly, let's talk about the food! Once again, it was absolutely extraordinary! Every meal has been wonderful, and the entire experience has made our anniversary getaway everything we could have hoped for and more. What makes this inn so special isn't just the beautiful surroundings, the cozy accommodations, or the incredible food. It's the people. Saxton and Jessica are two remarkable young women who genuinely care about what they do and the people they encounter. You simply cannot teach that kind of kindness and dedication. It comes from the heart. I sincerely hope management recognizes and appreciates what they have in these two women. And Saxton, I want you to know how incredibly proud I am of you. They recommended a wonderful local restaurant, The Blue Ridge Grill, to us for dinner, and it did not disappoint. The B&B is connected to the Chamberlain's house; however, it has its own private entrance. The main area of the B&B is an open space with a living room, dining area, and kitchen. The kitchen has a small refrigerator stocked with assorted drinks and there are also several snacks, all of which are included in the price of the B&B. The bedroom has a king-size bed and plenty of space for your belongings. You order your breakfast the night before, and either Michael or Shari bring it to you so that you can enjoy it in the comfort of your own space. Don't worry about going away hungry. You have plenty of options to choose from and everything was delicious. My wife and I have stayed in many B&Bs over the years, mostly overseas, and the Country Comfort ranks among the best. We hope to return again!

More than one visitor, this one included, has concluded that spending time at Welbourne is like visiting Grandma's house, for there's no better quick description of it. But the fact of the matter is, there is so much more. Welbourne is a living, breathing timepiece of current, past, and aged history that has been ticking through the ages of American life, since before America became a "united" States. Within its walls lie relics of Piedmont, Virginia, and U.S. history that you're not only allowed to touch, but are encouraged to take into your hands and feel, play with, and enjoy, just as if they were items in Grandma's house. From the second you cross the front porch and walk over the front door transom, history descends on you in waves like the folds of an old, warm blanket. If you ensconce yourself in the wonderful library to the right of the large foyer, you can relax in a rocker next to a nightstand on which sits a narrow treatise from 1765 entitled Considerations on the Propriety of Imposing Taxes in the British Colonies for the Purpose of Raising Revenue, by Act of Parliament; which you can take into your own hands and read under the steady painted gaze of Richard A. Dulaney in all his Confederate Colonel glory; while hundreds of volumes of history in floor to ceiling bookshelves beckon you to investigate the Civil War, as well as any number of fiction works old and "new" (circa early 20thcentury or earlier). Those sounds underfoot as you step from room to room aren't creaks, they're the songs of the past asking you to join in the chorus of centuries of life here. The faces in those paintings and pictures wait patiently for you to settle into your comfy chair to listen to their myriad stories of eras past, buttressed by the thousands of books in the untold number of bookcases all over the house. The well-worn rugs atop those well-worn original floorboards muffle the cries & laughter of times past as the ever-present tick-tock of the 1840 Howard & Davis banjo clock on the stairwell wall keeps perfect time to the music of those lives like a metronome of history. Beneath your feet well-worn Persian rugs laying atop original black board floors sing songs of centuries of life that have danced were you now so comfortably sit. A seat where the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe came to pen some of their works while their legendary publisher Maxwell Perkins enjoyed his close friendship with Elizabeth Lemmon, lady of the house. In fact, all over the 3 floors of this manse sit numerous bookcases filled with thousands of books large & small on every topic imaginable, all watched over by photos, paintings, and drawings of family members past; each unique room & bedroom holds a special piece of that past, presented in the now familiar term of faded elegance and comfort befitting Grandma's house. Noah Webster and all his intellectual heft leaves me wanting in the superlatives necessary to describe, much less explain, Welbourne and its impact on you. Because it's more than just Grandma's house. It's a thousand Grandma's houses, of thousands of Virginians, of thousands of Americans; storied lives were lived and breathed within its walls and out in its countryside; their ghosts speak to you out of the expansive silence; every photo and painting and picture a reflection of someone you should know; the life of someone who very well may have supped with George Washington at Mt. Vernon, ridden with John Mosby and his Rangers, or perhaps accompanied J.E.B. Stuart across the Potomac River at Seneca on his way to a collision with Union forces at Gettysburg. Welbourne is one of those few extant places that stands in silent testimony of a disappearing Virginia hunt countryside with so many stories to tell they would have kept Ken Burns & Shelby Foote quite busy. So how can I describe this place in such a way as to get you to come? I can't. If you're looking for opulence and gentrified regalia accompanied by $500 glasses of aged, vintage Virginia wine, you've come to the wrong place; turn around and go back to Middleburg and drive north 5 minutes to the Salamander Resort and all its antiseptic perfection. But if you want to touch living, breathing history as lived by 7 generations of the same family, the descendants of which welcome you like old friends with a heart-felt make yourself at home warmth as if they were your cousins; if squeaking floors and cracks in walls aren't noise and eyesores but instead the house's attempt to open itself up to you to sit, reflect, and bask in respite from the modern in the lap of true old-world family comfort & charm, come here.
