My friend arranged an overnight for us to visit wineries, have a tasty dinner in town and enjoy the spa.. for my bday! We stayed here. Just WOW. The building in itself is just beautiful. The high ceilings and architecture is lovely. I think one of my favorite areas was the dining area for breakfast. There are other gorgeous rooms to lounge in as well. The library is so rich with the dark wood. I loved that you can borrow/leave books! Our room had classic elegance. We had two queen beds and a balcony. If you're curious about pricing a little over $800 per night and that's in the off season. So be prepared to spend some money-- for a night or two, it's a fabulous experience. We had incredible service from the moment we walked up to the front door. The gentleman at the desk answered all our questions and told us about the car service that takes you to various place which is included in your stay, some were wineries and some were restaurants in town. We had marvelous service by Cayden while at the bar/restaurant. So gracious and so apologetic! We knew it was busy in there, but he made sure we were attended to! We spoiled ourselves with breakfast (my favorite space). The food was marvelous. We loved the pancakes and salmon platter. We split everything! Yet again, service was wonderful there too. The spa was gorgeous and incredibly relaxing for the mind body and soul! My friend took advantage of spa amenities. I think my favorite thing to do was sit on the heated stone lounge chair. The treatment room was beautiful. The massage chair could also be positioned in more of an upright position as well. Derek had some magical hands which helped ease a lot of tension I was carrying. He was also wonderful about checking in about pressure too. Some areas of my body can take more than others, he adjusted well to my needs. Extremely disappointed by my experience at Salamander Resort & Spa. During my stay (May 1-3), a large personal belongings bag disappeared from my occupied room following housekeeping service on May 2. This was not a forgotten shopping bag -- it was a large Aritzia carry bag I was actively using instead of luggage, containing hundreds of dollars worth of personal belongings. Hotel staff informed me the bag may have been "thrown away." The bag was not near a trash can, and another nearly empty bag remained untouched in the room, making the explanation extremely difficult to understand. Regardless, guest belongings should never be discarded from an occupied room. What has made the situation even worse is the lack of urgency and response from management after I sent a detailed written report with photos attached. For a luxury property at this price point, I expected significantly better handling of guest property and significantly more professionalism in responding to a serious incident like this. I strongly recommend guests keep anything important zipped inside hard luggage, because apparently even clearly-used personal bags are not safe from being removed during room servicing. read more

The deluxe room featured a cozy fireplace and a balcony with stunning views of the lush green landscape. The restorative ambience was enhanced by a bottle of sparkling prosecco, chocolate-covered strawberries, and rose petal turndown service -- perfect options if you want to add a romantic vibe to your getaway to celebrate an anniversary or other special occasion with your special someone. The spa-like bathroom, complete with a separate tub and shower, was luxurious. I enjoyed the outdoor fire pits -- a nice place to enjoy a glass of wine and conversation with friends. Dinner at Harriman's was outstanding--expertly crafted cocktails paired perfectly with the filet mignon. After dinner, I sat near the fireplace in the resort's library. If I ever return, I would love to indulge in a longer visit to enjoy the full range of experiences--golfing, spa time, equestrian activities, and winery tours. I attended the most beautiful wedding at the Salamander. Outdoor wedding, cocktail hour and fabulous indoor reception. The grounds are breathtaking and the staff is top-tier. Pictures don't do this place justice. You have to see it up close, witnessing its overwhelming beauty. Since I was attending a wedding I got to use valet parking, which was perfect since I had on heels. Entering the doors gave me goosebumps as the inside is just as gorgeous as the outside. The ceremony was small and intimate, the cocktail hour was full of love, laughter and delicious small bites. We even got to pet a pony from the stables. Given the location in Middleburg, VA the prices are over the top similar to being in Washington, DC or New York City. To start at the Bar I paid $30 for a Double JW (about 3.5 oz and $88 for a bottle of Sancere (closest to Savn Blanc). As a meal we ordered light as the Whole Main Lobster side sounded as a acceptable protein until it arrived. It was 2" x 3" size max for $42. As another accompaniment Risotto Appetizer for $40 maybe Four ounces. By time we ordered main courses I had accepted that our visit to celebrate my friends b-day was going to be a "once and not again" visit. I was blessed with having to do a job here for a few days, and the organization had provided us with rooms for the couple of days. What an amazing resort ! The staff are world class. The grounds are impeccable. There are so many things to do while you're at this resort and it doesn't matter your age they have something for everyone even the younger folks. The room is very well appointed and extremely clean. Our food was provided for us, so we did not have the opportunity to dine in the restaurant which for my understanding is one of the best in the region. The grounds are well kept and the barn where they keep the horses is absolutely spotless, they take a lot of pride in their grounds and you can see it. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary recently at the Salamander Resort as we do every year. After having a few drinks at the bar, we stopped into their adorable gift shop. Since we had a bit of a craving for sweet treats, we spurgled on a bunch of goodies they had to offer. They had an assortment of chocolates, peanut brittle and caramels that were new to us and the sales person mentioned the company (Saint Jacques Chocolat) was a local artisan shop. We shared the goodies and found the peanut brittle was so light and crunchy and nothing typical about it. The peanuts are from a locally-sourced farm, but our favorite was the chocolate assortment. Our favorite truffle was the Salamander Resort milk chocolate truffle with malt, yum!! I highly recommend this gorgeous resort and when you are there, make sure you stop into the gift shop, it is always delightful and has new goodies all the time. read more

Our queenly accommodations in the Estate King guest room are just splendid in our bathroom--large with double sinks, a separate shower with several jets, and a lovely free-standing pedestal bathtub just calling my name for a bubble bath. The food at Harriman's Grill is authentic farm-to-table Virginia Piedmont cuisine. The steaks, oh my. And I can't forget the spa, all the little extras, and attention to detail, which are perfect for renewing and relaxing. The staff was amicable and personable. We had Monika as our sever. Monika was very pleasant, accommodating and just a gem. We had sushi, a burger, fries and a Caesar. Oh, I forgot to mention and a couple of bottles of wine. I have made it a tradition to go to Salamander once a year, and it such a getaway. The spa is amazing, and it makes you feel like you are in another country. Ask for Bryan...he is AMAZING at what he does. The food is also truly outstanding. The sweet potato hummus, cauliflower, and salad are standouts. The avocado toast is also exceptional. The cleaning professionals will go above and beyond for you during your stay, and room service will be at your door in 20 minutes! It's a great place to truly unwind, and while the facilities are great, you may not want to leave your room! Yes, it's that beautiful. Actually dissapointed this time with the resort. Check in - issues from the start with how many nights we were staying. I had the email saying 2 nights, their system only showed one. Just weird vibe from the person at the desk. Room - was nice. Needs to be updated and have more plugs to work, charge, etc. Gym - Needs to be opened before 7 am - 7 am is actually late for a gym at a resort. But it was good and clean, and the equipment had been updated since the last time we were there. Property - you can NOT get coffee before 7 am - that's also late. Room service starts at 7 am as well. We ordered a pot of coffee the first morning and it's 30 dollars! What! Second day I went to get coffee that's pre made in big thermos. Just weird. On the second day, we did room service for breakfast - When you ask for toast, you get 1 piece of hard-toasted bread. The presentation is excellent. Food is not. The potatoes were greasy. Eggs were fine. It's just not good! Gold Cup - had lunch there - bar food is bar food, but everything we ordered was just ok. You expect anything at the Salamander to be incredible, but it's not. Service is very slow. Friendly staff but slow. We ordered tacos and the tortillas were so greasy, why? Ordered a Mahi sandwich, the bread was soaked in butter, why? It's just greasy stuff. Wings were good. Harriman's - Again, you expect to be amazed at the food and service here, and it was not that experience. The oysters were good. Ended up ordering steaks, the menu is weird. Trying too hard maybe? The wine list is not good. Some of the wines there are way overpriced. We understand the markup of wines at restaurants, but do it for the right bottles. Some of the wines are cheap and not good and have crazy markup. The lobster tail was chewy. As expensive as it is to stay here and eat on property, you are better off going to town and trying all the little places there. Today wife and daughter planned and booked a spa day at Salamander "five star resort". The resort suffered a power failure. Employees said nothing on arrival. Customers had coffee before asking about spa; resort charged for coffees. Resort management offered no compensation for the inconvenience. Although I am a Preferred member, none of my reward status benefits were accepted and when I asked , I was denied based on the hotel being "full". I've been here many times and this was the most disappointing experience. I've been treated much better at a Marriott. We went here for a short staycation and it was so lovely! The property is absolutely beautiful! It's about an hour from DC but it really feels like you are somewhere far and secluded. The spa was absolutely amazing! I had the best massage of my life from Allison. I stayed there for a few hours and only left because I was hungry lol. After your spa service, you can enjoy a lounge area with snacks, an outside heated pool and whirlpool, and an inside whirlpool and steam room. My only reason for four star versus five is that we had some issues with dining. First, make sure you are prepared with planning your meals. We went off site to get food Sunday night and there were very few options as a lot of restaurants in town close early. We had breakfast at Harrimans Grill, and the food was really good. But our main server was a bit attentive. We were mostly helped by the other staff. At some point we were the only table left in an empty dining room and we had to look for someone to pay our bill. We also did not have a great experience at Gold Cup Wine Bar where we ate in the evening. It took a long time for us to get food and I had to send my food back. I ordered wings and they came out cold as if they had been sitting and they just weren't good. The prices of the menu are high, so food service should absolutely be on point! The resort is decorated beautifully! My favorite place was the study. The art and furniture is stunning. We also had a nice time sitting out by the fire pit and going to the stables to visit the horses. Tip: sign up for the email club for a reduced first visit stay. Highlights: old school soak tub, the room terrace, the availability of wineries in the area, the baked goods at the resort, the art and decorations Overall, such a nice stay! We recently traveled from Arizona to celebrate my husband's birthday in Virginia. Our family discovered Salamander as a spot for lunch on our journey. The experience was phenomenal! The staff provided professional and friendly service at every turn, from the valet parking folks to gift shop worker and restaurant employees. We were served by Joshua, who was incredible! He explained the dishes on the menu, provided great recommendations and was attentive to our every need. He even brought us a piece of the Salamander signature cake as a gift to my husband!! Stayed here several years ago for my anniversary and everything was amazing. We did spa stuff and rode horses. Went back last weekend specifically for a spa day with a friend. We were not allowed to use the rest of the spa or pool since we weren't guests. (Mind you we spent almost $600 each on services) They never gave us a tour of the spa or showed us where the waiting room was. They took us to the lockers and disappeared. (I only knew where things were because I had been there before, my friend had not). They also didn't have spa shoes in our size because they said they were busy. The services were mid at best. I have worked in spas and am a licensed esthetician so I feel like I know what good service is and this wasn't it. Kind of disappointed. Won't be back. read more

Scheduled a spa day here and it was worth every penny. The scheduling over the phone was easy. The staff were resourceful and friendly. The spa is loaded with all amenities (pool access, sauna, gym access, etc.). All services reserved were couple treatments. The couple massage comes with a private suite with an in suite whirlpool tub and rainforest shower. It also includes a private outdoor patio with a whirlpool jacuzzi. The Rasul couple body treatment includes a private steam room to do self application of the body treatment. The Gold Wine Bar was a nice casual dining experience. The cocktail I ordered was extremely strong. The Chapel Hill pizza was excellent and the Korean bbq wings were crispy and fresh. Worth the drive, worth the splurge. read more

Pretty disappointed in my stay here. The room was rather dingy there was a dead plant, mystery stains on the furniture, ripped up drapes. Oh and did I mention the 1 ply toilet paper in the bathroom? I'm pretty sure the decor wasn't updated since the 70s and there are pictures of very pixelated photos around the building as if they just blew up an image that was not high res and printed it out. Not sure what about that is "luxury" It was impossible to book something at the spa since they were ignoring the phones. I went down to the spa and saw them actively ignoring the phones at the desk. For the price of rooms I expected a lot more. If you've stayed at luxury resorts before this will not meet those expectations. Had an incredible massage and enjoyed the spa pool, deck, hot tub and heated lounge chairs. Walked the grounds - so so pretty and only a 15 minute walk from the main Middleburgh strip. The restaurant was so so delicious. They accommodated us outside on a slightly chilly evening with blankets. We totally enjoyed the meal, from the charred cauliflower to the salamander honey dessert. Went to decompress for a few days with a friend we had lots of spa time and good food - we were told by the activities lady to take a walk to horse barn then we were given a tour & told to pet the gentle horses - before I could even pet them - I was standing by a horse/ he took my arm in his mouth bit me and Knocked me to the cement floor / I was hurt and in shock - Could hardly walk back to main lobby / once there the front desk told me I had to fill out a incident report /they told me they would send someone to talk to me - they sent a security person that told us he was on the job for only 4 days - he didn't write anything down and I was never asked to sign anything/ my friend that witnessed this incident asked to see camera footage from the barn to see what happened / the manager ran over to us & basically told me horses are unpredictable- see ya! He was rude & dismissive! I had to have a hip replacement surgery due to this incident & It's a shame how the manager treated me - not even a care for me as I was crying and in shock that this incident happened! I would never go to this resort again I urge all of my friends and family to stay away! It's a shame because I'm from the same area in Pennsylvania as Sheila Johnson/ it's a small town and we were all raised to care for each other and make sure if someone was hurt on our property to at least make an effort to reach out and check on them! read more

I booked a room here for Mother's Day and it was a beautiful weekend. I love how this high end resort isn't up tight or doesn't make you feel uncomfortable when you haven't checked in yet. We started the morning before check in doing spa services and were able to register for pre-check in and store our bags. The spa was fantastic, definitely a great spot with an infinity pool (was broken while we were there) and a gorgeous view. The spa check in and check out was very efficient. We were able to use all the free grounds activities before check in- my sister fished, hiked, and saw the horses before we even saw our room. Theres two restaurants on property which yes are pricy but the food was great. We walked often in the grounds, seeing the other pool, the horse stables, the lake, and the tennis courts. There is so much to do here if you plan ahead, so while Middleburg is sleepy, your time at the Salamander doesn't have to be. The room was gorgeous and spacious, with a nice balcony, a gorgeous tub, and a huge shower. We enjoyed coffee in room, the TV channels, the free water, and the comfy beds. The staff does a beautiful turn down service and carried our bags in from when we stored them to our room for check in. Look for days when rates are cheaper and come stay here!
